Glad to hear of your success on both fronts, GizmosMommy. I hope that your medical exam pans out well. Please make sure that they check your blood pressure, blood chemistries (thyroid, electrolytes, kidney and liver function tests, fasting blood sugar and triglycerides, total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and LDL cholesterol), blood counts, and EKG at your initial exam. Also, make sure that they get you set up for a THALLIUM/SESTAMIBI STRESS TEST regardless of the fact that you have had no further chest pains. Oftentimes medical professionals are tempted to blow this last test off in women because women typically develop their cardiac disease at a later age than men, but longstanding obesity and a sedentary (inactive) lifestyle increase a woman's chances to rival that of a man's with respect to developing early coronary (heart vessel) disease. Coronary artery disease does not reverse itself by a few months of better eating and exercise habits, so please insist on this test even though you've had no further recurrence of chest pains since improving your lifestyle. (It's also referred to as a NUCLEAR STRESS TEST, but I promise you it will not make you glow in the dark!) Keep in mind that a blood pressure of 130 or less for the top number (systolic) and 80 or less for the bottom number (diastolic) is preferable. If either or both numbers are higher than that, you should be rechecked again in a month. Your cholesterol goals will vary based on what else they may find in you (i.e. diabetes, high blood pressure, etc.) but in NO event should your total cholesterol be higher than 200, nor your HDL be lower than 40, nor your LDL be higher than 130, nor your triglycerides be higher than 150. Feel free to write this stuff down so you can go in fully prepared, and make the most of this opportunity. Good luck!!!!

Hey everyone, just wanted to give an update on my situation. Well first of all I'm down almost 20 lbs in a little over a month, and I haven't had any chest pains in weeks. I'm still scheduled to see a doctor at the end of the month to get my heart checked out. I have also picked up more hours at work so now I can get health insurance. emoticon I will keep you updated on my heart issues as I find out. Hopefully there is no damage!! Thanks for your help and support emoticon

Hey everyone, thanks so much for all your comments and advice. With the much appreciated help of Don, I was able to find a clinic through the county that I live in and I have an appt. at the end of the month. Hopefully I will qualify for the care and if not there are some other resources that I was able to find. I will keep everyone posted and let you all know what I find out. Oh and Gizmo is actually my pug, but he's just as important to me as a child emoticon emoticon

When you see the doctor and take advantage of the healthcare plans to the uninsured could you please tell us how you are doing?

Like I stated earlier and everyone else has backed me up it is very crucial that you see a doctor. A visit to Urgent Care is usually cheaper than going to a regular clinic. This is an issue that is very close to my heart because my mother is 45 year old and severely over weight. She has had many scares in the past but never a heart attack so she keeps living the unhealthy lifestyle. Please, do yourself a favor and get the tests done. Hopefully, they rule out heart attack and you can chaulk it up to a nasty scare and change your life before it is serious. But you need to rule that out first.

By the way, I am have been a nurse for 7 years before I moved into the rehab realm of treatment now I am a medical massage therapist. I work with stroke and heart attack victims all of the time, it is technically never too late to straighten out your lifestyle but you will never be exactly the same after the trauma of a heart attack.

Good Luck and remember to keep us updated! : )

GizmosMommy69,
As a practicing physician I can tell you definitively that: 1)There is NO WAY to determine whether or not you've already had a heart attack just by the presence or absence of symptoms; you need to see a doctor for appropriate testing. 2)NOT seeing a doctor after having had symptoms HIGHLY SUSPICIOUS FOR ANGINA (pain that results in oxygen deprivation of heart muscle) greatly increases your risk for having a potentially catastrophic event occur, which would otherwise be preventable if proper preventive measures are taken; 3)No matter what your income level, EVERY state has programs in place to help the uninsured and underinsured; you need only to follow through with the minimal amount of research advice already offered to you by Don and the others on this site if you truly do care about protecting/preserving/improving your health. Attempting self-diagnosis is both foolish and dangerous. Most hospital networks have free services for those who have limited finances. It is also WAY CHEAPER to diagnose and treat something early on than it is to deal with irreversible bad repercussions later. By your name, "GizmosMommy69", it sounds like there is at least 1 child in your life who is counting on you to do the right thing and get evaluated by a doctor in your community. With any luck, you may not have had a heart attack, in which case that doctor can help guide you through a medically safe and sensible approach to achieve your weight loss goals. Best of luck!

GIZMOSMOMMY69, So many things can cause this type of pain. Follow the advise given. Your health is too important to put this off. We care about our team members. I am a retired doctor, but can't give advise before running some tests and doing a physical exam.

Have a TERRIFIC day!

You don't need insurance to get medical help. There are ways. Talk to someone at your local medicade office. I am a nurse, just to let you know.

The reason I think I may have had a heart attack is be cause I have had chest pain problems. Since dieting and changing my eating I haven't had any chest pains. There was also pain in my left shoulder and arm during this period. By the way, I am 34. Thanks for your comments so far. As soon as I can get some insurance, I will be seeing a doctor about this!!

Many communities have free medical clinics, which have limited hours, long waits, but it is worth it.

What area are you in? I might be able to look this up for you?

I am not an MD, but I HAVE survived congestive heart failure at my highest weight. Haven't seen a cardiologist in decades, but am jogging right along on my treadmill up to 5 mph without any signs / symptoms or difficulties.

Perhaps there might have been some harm done from the "bad old days" but for all intents and purposes I'm moving full steam ahead!

I still take aldactone (diuretic) cardizem and theophylline and am working closely with my primary care doc on reducing perhaps eliminating these meds over time.

You didn't mention your age, but you sound like you have youth on your side, which means time is on your side.

You have children which can be another source of inspiration: changes in your health and wellness now can have a powerful impact on your children and the choices THEY make regarding THEIR health and wellness.

Stick with the Spark and step by step those pounds are TOAST!

If someone would have told me in 12/06 when I was 320, that I'd be weighing 234 today I would have called them a liar...lol! And I've been as high as 450 at my worst. You will see many, many, MANY folks like me here at SparkPeople who have DONE IT! Slowly but surely day after day...and you WILL MAKE IT!!!

Be kind to yourself, patient, persistent...pick yourself up after you stumble...redouble your efforts! Join in our celebration of ourselves!!!

Why do you believe you have had a heart attack? And I agree w/ the previous poster...SEE A DOCTOR! You need to find out definitively. Also, as the other poster said, damage to the heart muscle is permanent. Often times medication is used to improve it's function and/or prevent further damage and complications. Heart surgery is indicated for blockages that are present at the time of heart catheterization. I hope this helps.

If you believe you have had a heartattack coming to an online forum is not the place to go. YOU NEED TO SEE A DOCTOR. The only way to know the extent of damage is to run tests. Damage is permanent but weight loss will prevent further damage which is just as important. Best of luck with your weight loss endeavors but please for your health see a DR.

Hey everyone, I need some help!!! I'm very overweight and I strongly believe that I may have suffered some sort of heart attack in the last year. I do not have any way to see a doctor right now so I'm wondering if I can get some advice on here. I'm finally losing weight and getting healthy now but my question is if I have had some sort of trauma to my heart, can it be fixed or reversed as I lose the weight and get healthier. I guess my main concern is will I need some sort of surgery or medication to heal the damage I have caused or can I correct it as I lose weight. I'm really scared until I find out what I need to do, so any advise you guys could give me would be great!!! Thanks emoticon
