I love Hawai'i ! I went there for my honeymoon. Beautiful. Seattle is lovely, too. I have always wanted to visit. I am just glad the tornadoes have died down for a bit. I think we had 4 or 5 touch down in the area last week. I lost several branches of my huge pecan tree...but at least it didn't land on the house or cars! LOL!

Eh....bathing suits. That time is coming up again isn't it. That is motivation. Thanks for reminding me.emoticon

Well, it's definitely chillier here in Seattle area (mid 50's). We returned from Hawaii today and I miss it already. Well, I fell off the wagon some on vacation but am getting back on. Being in shorts and a bathing suit motivated me for when our weather gets warmer. :-)

Chillier again here today (40s), but at least the sun is out, blue skies, puffy clouds...nice! We're going to run up into the 60's later this week...maybe even 70's...woo hoo! Am I ready for THAT! :-)

inspirational piece for all...

Only One Pound

Hello, do you know me?
If you don't, you should.
I'm a pound of fat,
And I'm the HAPPIEST
pound of fat that you would ever want to meet.
Want to know why?
It's because no one ever wants to lose me;
I'm ONLY ONE POUND, just a pound !
Everyone wants to lose three pounds,
five pounds, or fifteen pound, but never only one.
So I just stick around and happily keep you fat.
Then I add to myself, ever so slyly,
so that you never seem to notice it.
That is, until I've grown to ten, twenty, thirty or
even more pounds in weight.
Yes, it's fun being ONLY ONE POUND OF FAT
left to do as I please.
So when you weigh in, keep right on saying,
"Oh, I only lost one pound."
(As if that were such a terrible thing.)
For you see, if you do this,
you'll encourage others to keep me around
because they'll think I'm not worth losing.
And I love being around you-
your arms, your legs
your chin, your hips and
every part of you.
Happy Days !!!
After all, I'm
ONLY ONE POUND OF FAT !!!

A man kills a deer and takes it home to cook for
dinner.

Both he and his wife decide that they won't tell
the kids what kind of meat it is, but will give them a clue and let them guess.

The kids were eager to know what the meat was on
their plates, so they begged their dad for the clue.

Well, he said, 'It's what mommy calls me sometimes'.

The little girl screams to her brother
'Don't eat it, it's an ***hole!!!!!!!'

A little laughter needed...

For those of you that like Cherrios in the morning...

Two little boys are out playing one day when the older one calls the younger one over...

"Billy, you know I turned 7 years old yesterday and I'm old enough to start cursing"

"You are? What are you going to say Tommy?"

Tommy thinks for a minute and finally says, "I'm going to say HELL and I'm going to start tomorrow morning". With that they go back to playing. After a little while Billy comes running back to Tommy.

"Tommy, I'm almost 5, am I old enough to start cursing?"

Tommy thinks for a few minutes and then says, "Sure. What are you going to say?"

Billy scratches his head, shifts his weight, wiggles around as he thinks very hard about what he is going to say. Finally Billy says, "I'm going to say DAMN and I'm going to start tomorrow too."

The next morning, Mom asks the boys what they want for breakfast. Tommy sits back in his chair, crosses his arms and says, "I'm pretty hungry this morning. What the HELL, I'll start with a bowl of Cherrios."

With that, Mom jerks him out of his chair, slaps him upside the head and sends him to the bathroom to wash his mouth out with soap. She then turns to Billy, inquiring what he wants for breakfast.

Billy replies, "I don't know, but I don't want any DAMN Cherrios !!!"

Wow. These are all great suggestions. I actually found out that a local chain of gyms offers a mentoring program. It doesn't pay much per hour but they give you a small commission. Plus, I can get my feet wet and get some practice before going on my own.
There is another company that sends you to people's homes to work out with them. They are stay at home moms who want female trainers only in their home.
Both of these sound good. You guys gave me a lot to think about. THANKS FOR THE GREAT FEEDBACK!emoticon

Rissatrain... doubt if the gym will allow you to come in and work with client if you are not employed by gym or are member but most gyms allow members to have guests for 1-2 sessions but the easiest way is to call the local gyms and find out their policies concerning the topic. See if they allow free lance trainers to come in, what is the number of times a client can have a guest, is there a professional discount for membership for personal trainers, do they employ trainers and what is their salary or do you work on commission only. This is an area where you are going to have to do a lot of leg work to get your client base established and once established, on going as some will drop off periodically.

Got that new cell phone yet? I'm off to teach DBT today - I used to so dread this class! It was a MAJOR source of stress eating! Now? I love it! Amazing what shifting to positive thoughts can do!

Cami's suggestion reminded me of another strategy:

Write a column for one of your local newspapers, a smaller one which is looking for a fitness column. Or even an extended letter to the editor or "guest viewpoint"...tips on getting ready for working out this spring, etc.

See if your local hospital and/or adult education evening program would be interested in a class you might offer to run.

Wow. Thanks to you both. Do you know if gyms will allow you to come in with your client even if you don't have a membership...or if you are not employed by the gym. If I work for myself, I am just concerned that I won't be allowed to workout with my clients at their gym. I have thought about in home workouts with just balls and bands. Thanks for the input. It really helped me to get the old gears going.

Rissatrain...There are several ways to get started...1. go to a gym and ask if they are hiring personal trainers or would they let you place some business cards at their desk. 2. Stand outside the gyms and pass out your business cards to members going in the gym if the gym will allow you to do so... or in the parking lot. Also flyers can be put on cars offering a discount for the first month of services with flyer. 3. Run an add in the personal column of your local newspaper. 4. Flyers in supermarkets, Laundromats, at junior colleges and colleges. 5. Flyers passed around the neighborhoods placed on doors or under corners of doormats. Anything you can do to get the word out that you are there... you don't need to mention that you are fresh out of school... mention that appointments are available. Advertise...that's the key

Welcome aboard, RISSATRAIN!

So pleased you've joined our Team!

This isn't my field, but my first thoughts were: do you have any friends / family who might be interested in reduced rates for a newbie getting started...? Also it wouldn't hurt to re-connect with some of your medical assistant contacts...see if there might be some interest. Folks you know may be active with fitness centers or other settings where a personal trainer could be hired.

I know we have other personal trainers on our Team, so hopefully they'll offer some suggestions.

Hello. This is my first post to this team. I just received my Personal Trainer Certificate. Does any one know what the best way to get started is? I am not currently working, but I would like to starting working as a personal trainer. However, I have no experience except the workshop I took at the Cooper Institute and...well now my certificate.
I was a medical assistant several years ago. I don't know if that counts!

Well...it took me several days to remember that I had been paying an extra $5 monthly for replacement insurance...! What a doofus for not jumping on that immediately...!

So I called and they'll be mailing a replacement within a few days.

Kinda frosted me that there was a "deductible" of $50, plus $10 shipping / handling. But to pay outright for the same phone would be $150.

Of course I'll have lost all my phone numbers...but I can plug away and replace them.

Don

PS, for those "inquiring minds"...the phone is a fairly basic Samsung, silver and black.

PPS, Spring is SPRINGING around these parts and I've finally tied a few important threads together in my latest blog which I just finished today if anyone's interested.

Sitting in Vermont in the dark right now at 5:31, a beautiful sunny day yesterday. Poised between MUD, ICE, SNOW waiting for the season to change...actually saw some green grass while I was out yesterday. Lots of activity in nature - geese, ducks and summer songbirds coming back...trees are beginning to bud - far from having leaves...the maple season is winding down, and the strawberries I ordered to plant arrived...the catalog said they would arrive at "the appropriate time to plant" hmmmmm ground is frozen under a foot of ice on the garden....it's 20 degrees....I wonder where they think VERMONT is? Ah well I guess that's what cellars are for! All's well on the hill, horses, dog, and I doing fine....what color is the new phone? And I would love to smell the new mown grass!

So what color is the NEW phone Don?

Sunny skies here in central California...spent time this morning walking with my daughter (who just joined sparkpeople) and 2 of my 6 granddaughters and then spent the afternoon hacking down some of my overgrown shrubbery in the front and back yards. They were growing while I wasn't looking... must have been while I was mowing the lawn which is growing in leaps and bounds and needs to be mowed again...ugh !!! I just mowed it 2 weeks ago in the back and this week in the front... and I haven't finished hacking down the shrubbery yet. If it isn't one thing its another. Oh well, racking up those activity points.

they just don't make cell phones like they used to...yep yep yep... looks like it's time for a whole new one... one with a "help me, I've fallen in the washer and I can't get wet" alarm.

maybe an expensive day...........when you get your new cell???

Well, today I revived my cell...for a bit!

The "end" button that shuts it down wouldn't work so I put it in the sun some more.

Now it won't do anything...grrr!

Wonder what will happen when I finally get a cell phone? I have put a remote control through the washer (didn't survive) and dropped a Palm Pilot off the dock (did).

We're alternating between teaser days of 50's and wet sloppy days of 40's...by Sunday we should be close to 60...woo hoo!

I did a very stupid thing for the 2nd time in my life:

Put my cell phone through the wash cycle in my pants.

I heard the "clunk" when I tossed them into the dryer...argh!

Hoping if I allow it to dry for a few days it will start working again. It did the last time...although with quirks. Crossing fingers!

There's nothing as calming and warming to the heart than seeing our calico sprawled on her back sunning her belly by our picture window...all fours up in the air, eyes closed and grinning... :-)

Dogs make great coaches! I wore my last one out...13 years TWICE a day or else! Buddy was a real task master. My new coach is 9 months old - and guess what she's a twice a day kinda gal too! That on top of taking care of the horses - and LUCKY me....having invented a WELLNESS group for my clients at work - I get to workout on the gazelles and go swimming with them all while getting paid! LIFE is soooooooooo good! emoticon

Started walking last night with my dog... she took the lead...her prior owner used to run 8 miles a day with her and I have had her about a year now. I think she still thinks she belongs to the old owner... we just walked but I still think she could take off running at any time. Is it possible to get shin splints from walking...lol? We made the mile trip in about 15 minutes each night now and she is definitely less winded than I am, but I am getting better each night.
