Does being a nurse make you eat? I never saw people eat the way the mental health staff I work with do! Stress is the culprit. I echo the gum, the water, and I find I have to PLAN AHEAD OR PLAN TO FAIL...so planning what I'm going to eat for the day ahead of time and having it available helps. I think too taking care of MYSELF is HUGE and if that's exercise or just getting away from it all to walk the dog, play with the horses or just have fun in the kayak...is good..

Your hospital food must taste much better than mine. Ours is yucky. Although I do have to say that after my first surgery (umbilical hernia with a strangulated bowel) after not being able to eat for a whole week, they served the best dang pancakes I had ever eaten in my life.
1) Water, water and MORE water! Flush away the craving!
2) Eat all you want: of the right stuff! When I sit down at the pc to catch up on my progress notes and I know I'm going to be there a while I go to the fridge where I've stockpiled my veggies and throw together a big bowl of baby spinach, baby carrots and sliced red bell peppers and I chow to my hearts content. I do the same thing at home if I get caught up surfing the 'net. Boy Scout's motto: Be Prepared! Have lots of healthy choices available.
3) Sugar free gum sometimes helps.
Oh, and I REALLY don't think nurses have a corner on the market with this problem...lol

When I'm working I always want to eat. I know it's the stress. My worst habit is eating off of patient's trays (of course the ones who have gone home or who want to eat something different!!). How do I make myself stop???
