Today it is treating me pretty well. Left a birthday/football party last night because people were smoking and I could feel my chest tighten and coughing was beginning. It was better to do that than have an attack, especially while recovering from double pneumonia.

I am newly diagnosed with asthma after several years (30+) of breathing issues and bronchitis. I have quit smoking (2 weeks into it) and am recovering from 10 days of double pneumonia. Soooooo. . .lately it has not been treating me well. That said, I am working hard to become healthier, including exercise and nutrition, breath work, etc.

My asthma has been under control for a while. I can not complain. I get the occasionally wheezing or shortness of breath when exercising, but I slow down, control my breathing and drink lots of water.

Even though I've been fighting my asthma since I was 11 months old, it hasn't really affected me that much here lately. Only if its cold or someone's burning wood.

I have been walking and have a few uphill paths to tackle. I have to stop, take a deep breath and release, then repeat many times. I keep water with me and stop whenever I start coughing or get out of breath. But I want to lose weight so I try to do something daily.

My asthma came back about 5-6 months ago. I was asthma free for about 6 years. Then suddenly, BOOM! I had an asthma attack out of the blue. I couldn't breathe very well for a couple days and I had to wait to get my inhaler. It was terrible. :/ Then I had it every night for a while. Now it flares up once in a while at night because we have carpet that collects all the dust. We don't have a vacuum with a HEPA filter. Definitely on my wish list.

Recently, I started to exercise again. Because I got treatment for my Depression. My asthma has only flared up once during my initial cardio, but it is now doing better. It is so hard to slow down and respect my limits with the asthma. I am hoping to make my lungs stronger. I am for sure gonna talk with my doctor about how to best go about getting into running. I am tired of making excuses and tired of allowing asthma to discourage me.

RHEASPARKS - Exercising with asthma can be very frustrating and some days I just want to give up. I just know that I will feel even worse in other ways if I give up. I completely understand what you mean when you say you worry about your lungs failing you. But believe it or not, we are actually making our lungs stronger. Obviously while we are in an active attack we have to seriously back off, but I have found no matter what, I can get some form of exercise.

I am currently training for several long races in the fall and the other night I had a run of 5 miles that took me 68 minutes because I kept having to "back off". I had to use my RI 4x and it was very frustrating but I got the five complete.

I keep working around the asthma and trying to work with my doctor to get a better handle on this. I hope that is possible. Like you I have been gurgling most of the week and it does interrupt my sleep. I keep thinking "If we can only figure out what is causing all the congestion then I would be fine". I have to spit up mucous constantly and yes sometimes it is scary. You are not alone.

I've just develped Asthama, which is acting up a lot. At first, for years, I had just a small cough during exerices sometimes that I could ignore, but now I am fully Asthmatic.

I went to the doctor and she prescribed me an inhaler and nasal spray, but the even with the inhaler, the gurgling in my lungs continues, and it frightens me. I'm not use to my lungs gurgling when I try to sleep or when it's suddenly time to use the inhaler.

I'll go into a terribly stressful cough attack, then take the inhaler and this works, but then I still have the gurgling lungs.

I use a pot of steam to handle the gurgling, but it comes back. I'm okay for a few hours until I start coughing, wheezing, then becoming stressed with coughing and wheezing at the slightest thing that might stimulate me or worry me.

How much and how should I exercise with my lungs feelings like they are failing me? emoticon

I found out I had asthma when I was a child and it subsided as an adult. Then I gained 80 lbs and it came back. i went on a fast and found out I have a dairy allergy. So I stopped consuming it. I moved back down to the MS gulf coast where I am originally from. I would go on walks and be fine but about 5 days I decided I would start jogging. Nothing crazy just 1 mile run walk intervals. I ran for 2 minutes and I have been coughing and hacking ever since. Working out in this humidity is terrible for my asthma. I haven't had an inhaler since I was 10. So lately it hard to breath. I guess I will have to let my body recover. Then just stick to jogging all over the house. I don't have a treadmill so I have to run in place or all over the house. I almost for got I had asthma. Surprise. i guess i still have it.

That's a good tip, but in this heat, I'd pass out or away. Also, I'm very self-conscious about getting into a sauna or steam room that I would die of the shock quicker than I would from an asthma attack. My upbringing was sheltered and it's inbred in me to not expose too much in public. I also terminated my 24hour gym membership that I didn't really use and decided to invest in my own in-home gym equipment that I'm currently using.

So sorry to hear this, and I know the feeling. Fortunately, your Dad came to your rescue with your asthma inhaler. The scary thing is sometimes these inhalers are ineffective, but good thing yours worked when you needed it. If you have a nebulizer, use it and you will feel much better. It's like getting a new lease on life after recovering from an attack so severe. Take care.

If you have a gym membership that has a sauna or steam room, I highly recommend you sit in one for as long as you can stand. I use them at 24hour fitness for atleast 10 minutes. It's the only time I can actually breathe. Or sitting in the bathroom letting the shower run on very hot water. The steam should help open your lungs up. It works for me.

Not so good either. I had an asthma attack while swimming in the pool with my family, my inhaler was in the house. The attack was so bad my mom said turned blue. Everything just closed up, I couldn't breath at all. Luckily my dad got my inhaler, but after attacks like that it takes me days to recover...I'll get a series of smaller attacks just doing simple tasks, and my breathing will be constantly tight. It's hard to be motivated and go out and do things when this happens.

Not good. Been using using my nebulizer morning and night, and rescue inhaler during the day, too frequently. Just bought the Total Gym XLS and slowly learning the exercises, but it's very challenging. Taking the rescue inhaler prior to any exercise attempt is helping me progress a little though.

The last few days I asthma has been acting up. I wake up in the night (if I can go to sleep at all) with bad coughing spells and cannot breathe. I have been taking a lot of showers. I need new tubes for my breathing machine. As soon as I get them I will be doing breathing treatments. I also have been drinking a lot of water which seems to help.

I have just had my first really bad attack this past week and i am still worn out...Is this normal? I am in Prednisone, Dulera and Albuterol. This weather is not helping either. How long does it take to feel normal again? Any tips and/or suggestions are most welcome!

Some natural therapies may help to manage symptoms of asthma. For instance, a negative response to emotional stress can cause an asthma attack. Some natural relaxation remedies like deep abdominal breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, guided imagery, and biofeedback can help relieve stress.

Other findings suggest that diet plays a role in alleviating asthma symptoms. For example, itís thought that omega-3 fatty acids found naturally in high-fat fish such as salmon, mackerel, or cod enable the body to make more products that tend to decrease inflammation. Whether or not this may be of benefit to those with asthma is still unproven.

I got the flu last monday. almost had to stay in hospital. Asthma specialist put me on antibiotics, allergy meds, and liquid prednizone in an iv- right there in the office. Thank god! But I feel all yucky from the high doses of Prednizone. besides the achy yuckies from the flu. :( any thoughts on how to reduce the sideeffects or atleast body aches from the prednizone? Im also taking symbicort, qvar, xolair, singulair, xepenex, albetrol and two other inhailed steroids... allegra, vitamin d, and vitamin c. I am WILLING to take suggestions I feel so sick. but atleast my airways are open.

My asthma is a mess, wheezing during this Fall season has me pondering on whether or not to get a flu shot! Working out at the gym would be easier if I spent more time exercising than having to catch my breath before, during, & after each machine. emoticon

I so completely sympathize with anyone who is having difficulty! I have had my asthma in check for 5-6 years, and this summer has been the pitts! I just cannot get back to healthy!

I starting having problems around July 2, and I thought it was allergies, and so worked with my physicians on adjusting medications. I completed 2 prednisone burst and had such a hard time with the tapers. I went to al allergy specialist, who felt that after the 10 plus years of allergy shots when I was young, have probbably helped with the allergies. I didn't show any significant reactions. So I had a CT of my sinuses and they seem to be the problem...so I am being seen by an ENT soon.

So for my asthma right now, I am taking Singular, Dulera, Flonase, Flovent (to bump up the inhaled steriods in an attempt to avoid another prednisone burst), Ipratropium, albuteral, and budesonide nebulizers, and omeprazole.

Tired and frustrated with being tired and wheezing, etc.

I was able to hike today for the first time in about a year. I couldn' hike to do my asthma. Hiking can be a pretty difficult workout and every time I stated up a hill, I would have an attack and felt like I was going to pass out. Yes, I know part of it was I am out of shape, but some of it was becaus of my asthma I am so happy I got through the hike. This means I have finally found the meds to control my attacks and can start doing something I love.

My asthama has been terrible lately and it has really affected my workouts negatively. I have been on prednsione almost continuously for the last 2 months due to environmental stimuli that aggervate my allergies which aggeravtes my asthma. I have decided to move to an apartment that doesn't have carpet and has central air instead of window units. I hope this helps my asthma so I have more energy and my workout will improve again.

Hello all - I'm new here. :)

Instead of wheezing, my asthma makes me exhausted. I took Advair yesterday morning and my workout was great (first time working out in a looong time). I didn't take Advair today and I'm exhausted after doing the exact same workout of walking for 35 minutes. I should, of course, take Advair every day, but my insurance doesn't cover it. What an expensive medication! I think I will have to pretend like I'm back in high school gym class in the pre Advair days and take a puff of Ventolin before and after I exercise.

I have had good control of my asthma lately. I do find I have problems with Cardio exercises even when I use albuterol prior to starting my workout. I am hopeful that I will be able to increase my endurance and not fatigue so easily. I guess one thing that I find frustrating is friends don't understand, and want me to join exercise classes and start training for a 5k or RAGBRI. People seem to think that not being able to breathe is just because I am out of shape.
Any suggestions for cardio exercises?

I've been having some disturbing health issues lately that I didn't think were related to my asthma...severe headaches, dizziness, fatigue, heart palpitations, low white blood cell count, recurring viruses and generally feeling unwell. I'm starting to think they may be side effects of the Symbicort I've been taking for several years. I know it's a dangerous drug and it's recommended that patients not take it for too long as the side effects seem to increase with long term use. I hate to stop taking it, since my asthma seems to be under control, but I'm afraid to continue with it. Anyone else have any issues with this or similar asthma medications?

I have been doing my preventative inhaler regularly lately and my asthma has been under control. I am very grateful for this and have made it one of my sparks goals to do my preventative at least 1 time a day every day.

For the past 2 months my Asthma has been under control or in a resting phase. I recently started working out and my asthma and allergies have flared up. Taking controllers on a regular basis where as before it was as needed. Any suggestions??

I wish you Luck, Motivation, Inspiration and Success.

My breathing is much improved lately. The only explanation I can think of is my diet. I'm mostly eating raw foods, cooking from scratch and avoiding most restaurants. I've always had problems with preservatives and food additives, so I guess this makes sense.

Felt great for the longest time, now for two days straight breathing has been uncomfortable but not difficult. Resting, taking inhalers, took claritin for allergies but no relief. Frustrating sometimes.

Today was another great day. I walked/ran 1.73 and I am curious to know how I will be on the day of my 5K. I am praying I don't need my inhaler but I think as long as I pace myself and take my time and not try to keep up with everyone else I will be ok. Right now I am walking 3min and running 2 minutes without too much trouble. Next week I kick it up a notch!

I was doing great until yesterday. I seem to have flare-ups every time it gets warm then gets cold real quick. Wednesday it was over 60, then in the mid 50s thursday, and then barely above freezing Friday and I spent friday night in the hospital because my inhalers were not helping.

I am going on being sick for 2 and a half weeks so far. The doc put me on two asthma meds yesterday to help get over this cough. Told me that when people with Asthma gets sick it will take them longer to get over it. Ahhhhhh.... I am a teacher and I do catch colds from the kids and it looks like I need to do a refresher cleanliness lesson. :) I started the school year with one cause last year I was on antibiotics 3 times. But we 3rd graders need a refresher course on keeping those hands and fingers out of the different opening of our face and wash those hands!

Started sneezing today and woke up this morning with a bad cold. Asthma not bad so far, but I haven't started draining yet. We'll see.

Hearing about the vaporizer sounds like what I found in mine and would never have found this place had it not been for my cat knocking the vaporizer off the table and knocking this piece off. I also found the mold you were talking about and threw it away. I had been using it with my little one who is nebbing daily for her asthma and makes me wonder if that is why she was getting worse. She still seems to wheeze quite a bit when she starts in with drainage but doesn't seem near as bad since no longer using the vaporizer. Hope your all doing better with breathing.

I've been having a terrible time - I never have issues in Dec. but this month has been the worst. I've been out of work since the 15th, had two rounds of Prednisone, 10 days of antibiotic, nebbing every 6 hrs, use a advair inhaler, flonase, and allegra D. Dr says I'm sounding better, but still wheezy and coughing a lot, croupy cough. Feel awful and of course with all the stimulants I'm not sleeping well so I'm exhausted. Friends are urging me to go in and see a pulmonologist. We have two dogs, and I'm allergic, however after one year with the first dog and 4 months after getting the second, this is the first bad episode I've had, so I don't know if it's related to them or not - I pray not.

I had that happen once with a humidifier. NASTY! Glad to hear it's all "cleaned up" and you're breathing better... I had a few rough weeks with the weather finally getting COLD in Las Vegas and the air is VERY dry... but my dr. upped my Advair and that has helped out very much. Now if there were just a generic available so it didn't cost so much!!! Happy Holidays everyone! emoticon

Wow, Rebel - that's pretty scary!! Thanks for sharing. I didn't think about black mold in the vaporizer. My sons had croup and asthma problems when they were little and when we went to move their beds we found black mold behind the wallpaper!! Killed it off with lysol and ripped out the wallpaper and their breathing much improved. Glad to hear you are feeling better. :-)

I thought Id share this in case it helps anyone. My xray came back clear and there was some mention of mold I might be breathing in from the doctor. I ended up finding black mold in my vaporizer! I read online and found out that humidifiers and vaporizers can get into. And I was huffing that in, so I think thats what caused it to get worse! Then I looked in the tank of my toilet and there was black mold all in there too. Now Im a pretty clean person, but this was hidden. My breathing has gotten better since I got the air purifier and cleaned the tank.

I was supposed to get that test done too- but right now just waiting for the results of the xray first. I think its allergys, something in my apartment though and a guy I work with is coughing too- so will let you guys know what they find- hopefully nothing...in the next couple days! The pulmonology doctor told me probably asthma since Im responding to the inhaler...so thats a good sign. Thanks for the welcome and support!

Welcome to the team. Have you had any other tests besides the x-ray? Pulmonary function tests? I hope the doctors give you an answer soon.

Hi, Im new here. I have for the past 3 months had trouble breathing at night and in the mornings and have been coughing all the time. Ive been to a couple of doctors, one gave me an inhaler....tomorrow I go for an x-ray to see if its anything serious. I feel like Im wasting money on doctors who dont tell me whats wrong with me- but Im assuming its asthma for now....hoping its just allergies and will go away whenever allergy season is over- even though Im not sure when that is.

You are not alone. I went to the doctor recently and he increased my Advair inhaler. I know now that I am older that I also have exercise induced asthma. My doctor told me that although exercise is good, it can also make asthma worse. He told me that if I need to use my rescue inhaler more than twice a week them my maintenance medications are not working, Yes this time of the year is worse for me. Hang in there.

I have been doing low impact exercise, walking with Leslie Sansone, doing her Cardio Slimdown and her Walk & Tone Workouts for 20 minutes, six days out of the week, & I still struggle with my asthma! I thought, doing low impact exercises for less than 30 minutes a day, would weigh less on my asthma but it has not eased up at all! I thought, trying to regulate my breathing techniques during workouts would help, but it doesn't! The tightness in my chest seemed to flare up when the seasons change from Summer to Fall, is any one going through this other than me? emoticon

Hang in there. I went to the doctor last week and he increased my Advair dosage. It has started stabilizing my asthma. Maybe you should see your doctor for help.

I do love the Neil Med. Also make my own rinse when I can't afford the packets. Have a Neti Pot and a squeeze bottle, depending on my mood. Less pain, just pressure today. Hoping to be back to exercising tomorrow. Thanks for the support!!

I was told I have chronic sinusitis a few years ago. The nurse practitioner told me to use Neil Med sinus rinse to get all if the stuff out. It really helps with the way your head feels and sometimes clears up the sinus infection, I'm feeling a lot better with the increased Advair dose. I'm so glad I haven't got a cold. I sometimes feel like a germaphob tis time of year. Thanks for the encouragement.

Congratulations on reaching your goal!! And if you do have to go on steroids know that the weight gain is temporary and not your fault. Don't let it cause you to fall off the wagon.
My asthma has been a little worse lately. Got my flu shot Monday and promptly caught a bad cold from my son, which has now turned into a raging sinus infection. When I'm in this much pain it's hard to exercise, but I don't feel like eating much either.
