Here in Michigan, humidity is a given with us living on Lake Huron. So far, I have had a good winter with it.

In FL. Can get dry, so use cool humidifier several week 3-4 x a yr at night. Helps a lot to stop wheezing. Inhaler I use only every couple of weeks, when air quality dusty, smokey. Use before heavy aerobics anticipated.

I get a little winded until I breath in a cool air humidifier steam while working out. I try not to use the inhaler too much: It has bad-for-the-person steroids in it.

This bitter cold weather makes it hard to breathe when outdoors or shoveling snow. I have a built-in humidifier on my furnace, as well as a 98% efficient filter, but I had to turn the humidity DOWN this week!

I hope it's a strong inhaler. I live in California and the degrees got down to 26 (record numbers for cold), and it was enough cause bad asthma, but I couldn't imagine how bad being in 6 degree weather must be. I started wearing a mask to cover my mouth and nose, and a cool vaporizing humidifier. I"m better now. The asthma cold is almost all the way gone.

I am not sure how cold it is where you live, but it is 6 degrees here. My asthma kicked in this morning. I picked up an inhaler at the pharmacy this morning, How timely.

Well, I'm new here by the way. My Asthma has been going on too long this time. I have fits and hit the inhaler. I've used a humidifier. I have Benadryl, but the coughing and weezing continues. For two years, I was really enjoying my dance cardio workouts and bike rides. Now, I can't even dance for more than five minutes before I start to have a coughing fit. What is really troubling me, is this is the longest such an asthma cold has lasted. I wonder if the weezing will ever go away. I use to have exercise induced asthma, but I now - obviously - have full blown Asthma. I have the cough fits and can't breath in between coughs until I hit my inhaler, plus use the steam pot. I have been using a steam pot to loosen my congestion. It works great, but the air outside: Something is apparently wrong in the atmosphere, since three of my friends have the same asthmatic cold. Now, it's been reallly, really cold. California has been having record breaking cold nights, and it is even going to snow this Tuesday in Chico, CA. It rarely snows in Chico. This cold is wreaking havoc on so many people and lives. If I go outside I can feel it: It's this dry, really cold air, and I beging to cough and weeze as if I'm standing in a smokey room. I hate this. I tried a cardio for 30 minutes yesterday and my weezing fits became just out of control. It's now been a week that I've been handling my breathing problem that goes with all of this. Inhaler is useless most of the time. Inhaler needs to be stronger. Doctor? Yes, soon. I'm making an appointment. What is the WORST: I can't do my favorite flashy dancing now.

Good morning. My asthma I think is getting worse. I can get out of breath while talking or reaching down to tie my shoes. I do use my inhalers; adavair twice a day one puff and then I am supposed to use my ventolin when I need it. some days I could be using it all day long! But only supposed to use every 4 hours. My cardiologist has referred me back to the respiratory specialist so I will wait and see what comes from that. Meanwhile my voice gets husky a lot. I do try and rinse well after taking the puffers. Off to acquafit this morning. I don't seem to have too much trouble in the pool.

Morning well I walk my two youngest to school and I took my time so I wouldn't get out of breath. It felt so good to be able to walk them again. We starting to get cold too as this morning it was only 30 our high suppose to be in the 50's. My daughters eye is starting to look better she misses school. We have another daughter home with a nasty cold and sore throat. I say it from this weather you know. Not too much going on other wise. Today I have a couple meetings with the kids teachers to see how they doing in school. Just trying to stay on track and eat right and to stay warm and well. Cause with all this cold temperatures I sure cant come down sick. I still use my inhalers here in there. Hope all is well with everyone else...

Hi everyone. I'm new here, and I take breathing treatments twice a day. I'm on Breo inhaler, Pro-Air inhaler and one Montelukast pill a day. When I get bronchitis, I'm on a 6 day pack of prednisone. I'm also a type 2 diabetic and prednisone raises my sugar.

Strangely enough, I play the sax every week in church and practice 2 hours Sat. mornings and very, very rarely does my asthma interfere with my playing. This is truly a gift from God.

Nice to meet everyone here. Have a great breathe-easy day. emoticon

Morning Sorry I been MIA last week been busy running around getting the kids ready for back to school. Had to go clothes shopping then sneakers shopping and school supplies and even up to date shots for my middle schooler. So I did a lot of walking. Then me and my hubby will be celebrating our anniversary n Aug 5th we be together 15 yrs. Boy how times fly by quickly. We have had our up and downs but some how we work through things and pulled our marriage together. I guess everyone goes though a rough patch here and there. Anyway I am trying to lose this weight and it hasn't been easy. I swear when you hit your 40's it hard and harder to lose weight. But I am trying my best to. At times I just want to give up but I don't. I eat as healthy as I can and I even cut the sugar out and still nothing. Doctors say you have to balance everything. I do that and still not seeing results. For now all I can do is keep going and one day I will reach my goal of being under 200 lbs. Hope everyone else is doing fined.

I have good and bad days. Depending on my asthma. I notice if I don't take the inhaler then it's bad. I'm going to try to use the CPAP machine tonight because I've been coughing a little. I hope you all have a good week. emoticon

Good for you Sandy. Since my golf adjourned for the summer I haven't been getting as much exercise plus I sort of sprained my ankle so I was off it a couple days. But it is feeling better now. Still taking my Adavair morning and evening. Hardly take my Ventolin unless I feel breathless but doesn't happen much. I am so pleased. Trying to do gardening, weeding and watering everyday which is a lot of exercise and have been doing some weed whacking in the morning before it gets so hot. Plus yesterday I actually vacuumed. emoticon We are getting ready to go for our summer vacation on the coast so I have been busy baking and getting ready for that plus a niece's wedding next week. So much to do. Plus I'm knitting a summer poncho (capelet) for my granddaughter. It will be so pretty.

Well mines hasn't been too bad either. Only use the inhalers as needed.

Morning I sure haven't been active here much on Spark or my teams. I been so busy with family stuff and the kids that I just don't go online much. Hubby had to reformat my laptop cause I some how got a virus. So it took him a couple of days to fix it. Thank god he was able to. As for my weight well it been up and down. So I just have to stay focus and start tracking again. We had a really big fire near our area thank god it didn't come near where we live but you could see the smoke as the whole sky was red clouds. But it did spread on a highway and burned over 20 cars n trucks. Also burn 5 homes that was in the hills. They still trying to get it contained right now it only 5%. I am so ready for the kids to go back to school which is Aug 10th. I love them but oh god they driving me crazy. Hope everyone is having a good week... Enjoy your weekend

My plan for now into Aug is to set mini goals and track what I eat and drink and to stay active.

Had a great walk yesterday with a challenging emoticon hilly section and I managed really well. Taking my Advair regularly is really making a difference. Feels so good not to be restricted with my breathing. It was a clear day so I think that made a difference also.

Sorry I been MIA just been busy with the family, Well I am doing much better and haven't use the inhalers since I finish all the meds from the hospital. I really don't know what was causing my attacks. Sure wish I knew.My weakness is night time snacking too. So I went out and brought greek yogurt and fruit for when I am hungry. So far it been helping. I have either one before going to bed and I am good. My other problem is I like to skip meals a lot. I am not for breakfast really so I normally skip it. As long as I have my coffee I am good to go. But I was told you need to eat breakfast so I went out and got some grapefruit so I now been having a half with my coffee. It a learning process you know. I need to start drinking more water but I don't.
As for the kids and hubby, they all doing good and well. The kids been enjoying the nice warm weather we been having. We been letting them get wet a lot. Hubby been enjoying grilling out doors.

I have been taking my Advair twice a day and it is really making a difference. I have much more lung capacity it seems. Mydaughter says I need to take it like it says on the inhaler. I was always trying not to use it too much but since it is longer acting I think it is making a difference. Going for a breathing test next week so will see what they say. I went to my Doctor last week and I realize he didn't even listen to my chest????????? Just read your post Sandy and shouldn't he do that>???????? Whatever!!

Just checking in with everyone,

Went to the doctors and he said I am doing good he didn't hear any wheezing in my chest which was good news. So he wants me to only use the inhalers when needed. But he does want me to figure what triggers me to have an attack. He said it could be smells, cold weather, pets, smoke etc. Other then that I am doing good. So hubby took me out for bunch it was just the two of us. Which it as nice having us time you know. Hope all is well with everyone else.....

Today it is nice outside it feels good being able to get out an about. /today we surprising our daughter Tiffany at her school for a birthday party in her class. We bring cupcakes and juices.
Nothing new to report. Still doing good and I finish my meds the the Er dr gave me. So far still haven't needed the inhalers much only once during the whole day which isn't bad. Before I was using them all day long. .I am doing good with my eating too. Staying within calories range. I just wanted to check in and said hi. Hope all is well with everyone else....

Spent my Saturday outside with the kids and it was nice out. Today we suppose to be getting rain. I sure hope not cause Today is my daughter Tiffany birthday she turn 8 and we having a small family get together. I am doing much better and the meds are working. I haven't been needing the inhalers much either. the only thing I use was the Nebulizer twice this week since being home. Hubby says that good. I been drinking plenty of water and snacking on fruits and eating 3 meals ad 3 snacks everyday. I am on a 1800 calories plan. It must be working cause my clothes are fitting looser. Wishing everyone a happy Sunday.....

I take my ventolin and adavair prior to working out or going for a walk, etc. My breathing issues seem to be exercise -induced. The weather really has a big influence on my breathing. Even with the inhaler I had a rough time trying to walk on a flat hike at the coast in December. The air was just to heavy. Here at home where it is dryer it is better but then there is woodsmoke, etc. I am trying to be active daily and work up my stamina to help my breathing. Also trying to drop the extra weight which would lighten the load. emoticon Just cannot take breathing for granted anymore!! I did not discover I had asthma til I was 63 and I am learning to cope with it.

I realized the other day that I have not used my rescue inhaler in weeks! I have not needed it when I run, hike, snow shoe or ski! Woohoo! I really feel like my lungs are getting stronger as I go. I still take my maintenance inhalers and still cough up yucky stuff occasionally but this I can live with, finally! Woohoo! There is hope!
I hope that you all find your relief. Prayers for you!

It is so interesting to hear how others are dealing with their asthma. I get quite discouraged when I try to go for a walk and it is so hard to breathe and my chest feels so closed and uncomfortable. Today was good - I took my puffers earlier before I went walking and that seemed to help. It seems to depend on what the weather is outside. We are pulling out the carpet from our bedroom and will have wood floors with rugs I can shake out. 'm really worried that my asthma will get worse the older I get.

Today it is treating me pretty well. Left a birthday/football party last night because people were smoking and I could feel my chest tighten and coughing was beginning. It was better to do that than have an attack, especially while recovering from double pneumonia.

I am newly diagnosed with asthma after several years (30+) of breathing issues and bronchitis. I have quit smoking (2 weeks into it) and am recovering from 10 days of double pneumonia. Soooooo. . .lately it has not been treating me well. That said, I am working hard to become healthier, including exercise and nutrition, breath work, etc.

My asthma has been under control for a while. I can not complain. I get the occasionally wheezing or shortness of breath when exercising, but I slow down, control my breathing and drink lots of water.

Even though I've been fighting my asthma since I was 11 months old, it hasn't really affected me that much here lately. Only if its cold or someone's burning wood.

I have been walking and have a few uphill paths to tackle. I have to stop, take a deep breath and release, then repeat many times. I keep water with me and stop whenever I start coughing or get out of breath. But I want to lose weight so I try to do something daily.

My asthma came back about 5-6 months ago. I was asthma free for about 6 years. Then suddenly, BOOM! I had an asthma attack out of the blue. I couldn't breathe very well for a couple days and I had to wait to get my inhaler. It was terrible. :/ Then I had it every night for a while. Now it flares up once in a while at night because we have carpet that collects all the dust. We don't have a vacuum with a HEPA filter. Definitely on my wish list.

Recently, I started to exercise again. Because I got treatment for my Depression. My asthma has only flared up once during my initial cardio, but it is now doing better. It is so hard to slow down and respect my limits with the asthma. I am hoping to make my lungs stronger. I am for sure gonna talk with my doctor about how to best go about getting into running. I am tired of making excuses and tired of allowing asthma to discourage me.

RHEASPARKS - Exercising with asthma can be very frustrating and some days I just want to give up. I just know that I will feel even worse in other ways if I give up. I completely understand what you mean when you say you worry about your lungs failing you. But believe it or not, we are actually making our lungs stronger. Obviously while we are in an active attack we have to seriously back off, but I have found no matter what, I can get some form of exercise.

I am currently training for several long races in the fall and the other night I had a run of 5 miles that took me 68 minutes because I kept having to "back off". I had to use my RI 4x and it was very frustrating but I got the five complete.

I keep working around the asthma and trying to work with my doctor to get a better handle on this. I hope that is possible. Like you I have been gurgling most of the week and it does interrupt my sleep. I keep thinking "If we can only figure out what is causing all the congestion then I would be fine". I have to spit up mucous constantly and yes sometimes it is scary. You are not alone.

I've just develped Asthama, which is acting up a lot. At first, for years, I had just a small cough during exerices sometimes that I could ignore, but now I am fully Asthmatic.

I went to the doctor and she prescribed me an inhaler and nasal spray, but the even with the inhaler, the gurgling in my lungs continues, and it frightens me. I'm not use to my lungs gurgling when I try to sleep or when it's suddenly time to use the inhaler.

I'll go into a terribly stressful cough attack, then take the inhaler and this works, but then I still have the gurgling lungs.

I use a pot of steam to handle the gurgling, but it comes back. I'm okay for a few hours until I start coughing, wheezing, then becoming stressed with coughing and wheezing at the slightest thing that might stimulate me or worry me.

How much and how should I exercise with my lungs feelings like they are failing me? emoticon

I found out I had asthma when I was a child and it subsided as an adult. Then I gained 80 lbs and it came back. i went on a fast and found out I have a dairy allergy. So I stopped consuming it. I moved back down to the MS gulf coast where I am originally from. I would go on walks and be fine but about 5 days I decided I would start jogging. Nothing crazy just 1 mile run walk intervals. I ran for 2 minutes and I have been coughing and hacking ever since. Working out in this humidity is terrible for my asthma. I haven't had an inhaler since I was 10. So lately it hard to breath. I guess I will have to let my body recover. Then just stick to jogging all over the house. I don't have a treadmill so I have to run in place or all over the house. I almost for got I had asthma. Surprise. i guess i still have it.

That's a good tip, but in this heat, I'd pass out or away. Also, I'm very self-conscious about getting into a sauna or steam room that I would die of the shock quicker than I would from an asthma attack. My upbringing was sheltered and it's inbred in me to not expose too much in public. I also terminated my 24hour gym membership that I didn't really use and decided to invest in my own in-home gym equipment that I'm currently using.

So sorry to hear this, and I know the feeling. Fortunately, your Dad came to your rescue with your asthma inhaler. The scary thing is sometimes these inhalers are ineffective, but good thing yours worked when you needed it. If you have a nebulizer, use it and you will feel much better. It's like getting a new lease on life after recovering from an attack so severe. Take care.

If you have a gym membership that has a sauna or steam room, I highly recommend you sit in one for as long as you can stand. I use them at 24hour fitness for atleast 10 minutes. It's the only time I can actually breathe. Or sitting in the bathroom letting the shower run on very hot water. The steam should help open your lungs up. It works for me.

Not so good either. I had an asthma attack while swimming in the pool with my family, my inhaler was in the house. The attack was so bad my mom said turned blue. Everything just closed up, I couldn't breath at all. Luckily my dad got my inhaler, but after attacks like that it takes me days to recover...I'll get a series of smaller attacks just doing simple tasks, and my breathing will be constantly tight. It's hard to be motivated and go out and do things when this happens.

Not good. Been using using my nebulizer morning and night, and rescue inhaler during the day, too frequently. Just bought the Total Gym XLS and slowly learning the exercises, but it's very challenging. Taking the rescue inhaler prior to any exercise attempt is helping me progress a little though.
