I took 60 mg daily for 3 days then 60 mg every other day for 10 doses. The prescription has refills which surprised me.

I sometimes feel that prednazone wipes me out and yet my doctor said that is not a side effect.

In the past 6 months I have been put on prednisone for various reasons (asthma flair, sinus infection, and the worst was having some sort of infection from there being a sewage problem in my house...not fun!) and 1/2 the time it was a tamper down pack and the other times it was just take 2 a day for 5 days. I think a lot of it has to do with how sick you are, what other medicines you are given etc.

Everyone has different reactions and if you read the inside packet of your singuliar there is a section that explains some of the side effects you may get, and it further states that many patients who get these side effects notice them while tapering off an oral steriod.

I personally get strong muscle spasms (like my fingers, neck, and I don't know if it my stomach or something near it... will tense up and shake awful, and it's painful). I find this strange since prednisone relaxes joints, but whatever. I also get very dizzy, heartburn and have frequent headaches. In the hospital, with the IV form of prednisone I had heart palpitations, they had to keep an eye on... but I was on a very high dose. As soon as the prednisone is out of my system, I'm fine.

I keep a log of side effect and talk to my doctor about them. Together we decided that the short term discomfort (the 10 days I'm usually needing prednisone)doesn't outweigh the benefits of taking both perscriptions. The lower the dose gets the better the side effect get.

(again, this is how it effects me. Everyones different.)

These are the list of side effects from the singulair website. It's good to know what to look for, but I wouldn't get to anxious about them either.

60mg 5 days and stop to me seems high because I have always tapered. Currently I'm on 10mg for 5 days tapering to 5mg for 5 days then stop. But I'm not a doctor.

My tapering on a low dose could be because I am also on singulair, and singulair has some pretty strange side effects when your tapering off an oral steroid.

Strangely, enough my skin problems show up while on prednisone... everyone's different, I guess that's way we have to really have a doc we can trust.

If anyone having the skin problems is anything like me, then they may be experiencing uticaria or hives. I recently started developing hives when I workout or do anything that causes my body temp to increase. It starts with tiny little red dots on my arms, legs, back, chest, neck and face, they are barely noticeable but they itch and sting intensely. My doc says it just happens to some people and it is directly related to my asthma and allergies, and I'm currently on a prednisone taper for this. It could last anywhere from a few days to a few years.

i don't know exactly what your red spots are, but personally i have yet to hear about an asthma med causing any bad skin problems. i have excima and a form of dermatitis plus allergies like pet dander. the prendisone has really helped my skin and also had the pleasant side affect of helping my asthma, too. if you are having serious issues with your skin, the best thing i can tell you would be see a professional.

Okay, so now I am curious. When you say you are on prednisone for your skin what does that mean. What issues are you having. I recently started having little red spots show up on my hands and arms. Could this be related to the meds I take for asthma?

They tell me now that tapering isn't necessary for a 5-day course. If a 5-day course doesn't alleviate symptoms, and you have to take it longer, then tapering comes into play. Years ago tapering was always recommended, but I've had no adverse affect from not tapering after 5 days.

Today is the first day of the rest of your life.

+1, I'm on Pred for my skin as well. What a pain in the butt.

You shouldn't need your rescue if your daily inhaler is working. I only take mine before exercise these days - I went in to refill and the pharmacist commented on how long one of my rescue inhalers last!

My little daughter and I also run five days then stop too. Sarah has had to run it already 3 or 4 times since birth so that has made me nervous but she is always wheezing. I figure she will be the one most like me with asthma which is allergy induced.

i'm on pred, but not for my breathing. it's my skin so i can't say for sure about that. my doc is trying to go down but we have to go by my skin and not my asthma. although i haven't needed my rescue inhaler for awhile, go figure. i'm usually on 30-40 mg of pred. a day and advair twice a day. i wonder why i don't need to refill my regular inhaler??

Thanks, it gives me confidence to trust the doctor. I have not had good luck with choosing the right doc for me and it is very frustrating. I think this current one is doing a good job for me but this advice was so contrary to before I was skeptical

Standard dosing guidelines for Pred is less than 5 days = stop. Longer than 5 days is tapered.

I just finished a course of Pred, 5 days @ 50mg/day and came off no problems.

Okay, the doc's got me confused. I always thought that when you are on prednisone you had to be tapered off. Now they are telling me that I can take 60 mg for 5 days and stop no taper. Has anyone else had this experience and how did it work for you?
If you are on longer than that then you do have to taper according to her.
