I'm on Singulair, and have been for over 3 years. I guess it is doing its job, haven't noticed anything different. What works for me is Qvar. I would constantly get thrush from Advair and had pneumonia three times in a year after starting the Advair. Nasonex works wonders for me, but I also take zyrtec. I want to quit Singulair and Zyrtec, as Nasonex seems to make everything better, but I don't want to, just yet.

When I used the Advair it made me have a chronic cough so I was switched to Pulmicort and it helped. My daughter takes Asmanex and it seems to control hers as well. You have to try different ones to see which one is the best for you. Alot of people take singular but it does nothing for me.

So far, from what the doctors can tell, as insurance refuses to pay for allergy testing because everything came back negative a few years ago, I have asthma triggered by mold and possibly new carpet. The only times I have had attacks was when I moved into a brand new house and a house that was filled with mold. I can exercise, thankfully, with no problem. I wish there was a sure fire way to tell what is wrong and how bad. Hopefully mine is just allergy induced, or allergen, and nothing worse. Has anyone tried advair (any strength) and did it work for you? I tried and nothing helped, it just made me worse and feel terrible.

My daughter was diagnosed when she was 7 yrs old and only exercised induced for her. My son has sometimes to use an inhaler when he gets sick real bad to help in cough things up but does not have asthma. My new little one I will have to wait and see. She already coughs real bad when sick and you can hear here breath quite a bit so I wonder.

My father has asthma. I have asthma, one of my 1/2 brother's has asthma, my father's mother has asthma (adult onset), and my sister's children have asthma(there are 3 of them). I have 4 children... so far - none of which have asthma! I'm so grateful for that!

I agree you need to find out the answers. Asthma is not something to joke around with by no means and yes I have been hospitalized more than once for mine because of it messing with the heart. I hope you find all those answers and my daughter also has acid as well along with the asthma too so you may have both. Good luck and keep us updated on what you find out.

yes asthma is something that shouldn´t be taken on the lighter shoulder.i have nearly lost my older son to asthma on several occasions and one time i had actually thought we had lost him 3 years ok and i still have nightmares over that day.we nearly lost the baby to a sudden asthma attact two weeks ago.he ended up being on oxygen for 5 days and nights along with cortisone direct in the vein.he is now out of hospital since the beginning of last week but he is still on atrovent 10 drops and salbutimol 6 droops 3 times aday.at ten months old it is a lot for his tiny body to take and seeing in hospital with all the wires and tubes was heartbreaking and alsodpressing the thought that he is going to have all the same problems as his big brother.the best advice to give you is to find out as much as you can over your asthma, which type it is?what triggers it off?etc and if given medicine make sure you take it when you are suppose to take it even if you feel well and always have your spray with you for emergencies and have a reserver spray incase you lose one or it runs out.good luck.

My doctor has told me that losing weight could help with my asthma. The first thing my doctor asked me was if I gained a lot of weight right before I had my attack, as she thought it could have something to do with it. I had a test a few months ago, with a spirometer, but the tests came back inconclusive. I did my peak flow 5-7 times a day, when I got up, after I ate breakfast, before and after lunch, before and after dinner, and right before bed. Unfortunately, those results never changed, as they thought it could be acid reflux. I want to do the methocholene challenge, but that will have to wait until I get the money for it. Hopefully that will tell me for sure what is wrong.

No it does not have to do with your weight. I have skinny people on my mom's side of the family who have had it more severe than I have. Weight doesn't help it no but it does not get rid of it either. My mom has seen her brother lose a child due to an asthma attack so she really takes it seriously so I am fortunate for that. I wish you luck and hang in there. You will succeed but only by sticking to your guns and not giving up.

My mom is very insensitive to my asthma, as she doesn't understand it, even though my dad, who she was married to for a while, and my step-dad, both have asthma. She just tells me I got it because I am fat like both of them, even though both of my "dads" had it growing up, and they were both very fit in their younger years. I do realize that gaining weight had a huge factor in my asthma, as that was the main trigger along with mold, but what she doesn't understand is that I am not in the shape I was before and can't run 5 miles straight, and it will take me a lot longer. I am not as heavy as she sees me as, and I have no problem running, I just don't have the endurance, due to being out of shape and asthma.

I too am the only one in my family now who has it. My Grandma did but she passed away some time back but me and now my middle daughter both have it so it's hard for others to understand.

I am the only child of three that has it, so far, but I did not develop it until 4 days before I was 21. Luckily, it is under control and it is a mild case. My dad and aunt both have it, along with my paternal grandmother. Unfortunately, what set it off was a moldy house and a large weight gain. I was always active in sports, especially soccer, and never had any indications of asthma. I warn my brothers to keep active and not gain lots of weight in a short amount of time. Also, the people in my family that do have asthma have horrible allergies and have had asthma and allergies all their life. I have some allergies, like mold, but nothing major that is not easily controlled. I am the only one in my family (other than one brother), asthma or no asthma, that is not allergic to cats.

Yes I must say it does run in families. My Grandma's family had it real bad and yes even deaths have occurred my the family from it as well. In my family I and my daughter have it and I have cousins who have it as well. I have lost one cousin due to taking to much of the asthma meds which caused him to have an heart attack and die from it. It's a very scary thing to have.

yes it does run in my family and my husbands family.of my own immediate family my husband and i have asthmy and two of our son´s.the dr said before we had our first child that our first child would have a 60%chance of having asthma.30%for each parent with asthma.when our first child had asthma they warned us that any other children we had had a 80% chance of asthma.the 60% both parents +20%for a sibling child.so you are not on your own there.i am sorry to hear that it has hit your family so hard especially that with your father.on this team you will find people who can emphasise with you and will listen when you need someone to talk to or can give you advice when you might need it.welcome to the team.karen.remember you are not on your own.

I seem to be the only one with asthma, unless you count my brother who has had two anaphylaxic reactions to dry cleaners. Many family members have allergies and/or sensitivities, especially to foods and pollens/grasses, like I do, but I'm the only one with a puffer. I'm sorry to read of the tragedies over asthma in your family. Its a big reminder of how important it is for us all to keep our asthma well-managed.

I just wondered if any of you have few members in your family who have asthma, I am 1 of 4 siblings in my family we all have asthma and we all have 1 child each who has asthma, My Beloved Daddy died of an asthma attack at the age of 32 , leaving my Mummy a widow with a 4,5,7 and 8 year old child to bring up on her own, I do not remember my Daddy as I was the 4 year old. My uncle is disabled with asthma, and my cousin is brain damaged because of an asthma attack.
