I'm in Tampa, FL. I apply for all sorts of work here - art, design, web, secretarial, and the usual fast-food places as last resorts.
I look into tons of freelance, but the folks who seek out freelancers don't often understand even the basics of what they're asking for, and in the rare event when they do know what they want, they don't understand the skill or value of the project. (Ex: "I want you to replicate the Mona Lisa. I want it in high-quality acrylic paints, and twice the original scale, on canvas and framed. It should be done in two days and I will pay you $50")
I also look into telecommute jobs, but no dice.
I've sworn off retail. It's cut-throat and the corporations and companies that operate retail establishments run their employees into the dirt, demanding perfection and demi-gods, but only willing to compensate minimum wage appropriate for high-school drop-outs.
