Hi--Just joined, but in scrolling, back, I like Saddhu's comments about sugar and separating the 'bad' sugars from ones that are healthy for us ............ I certainly would NOT want to give up my Green drinks that have a kiwi, blueberries and banana w/ all the veggies ........ those are healthy and antioxidants ........... so I am staying away from the obvious 'bad ones' ..
(NO starbucks etc. sugary drinks!) NO pastries or ice cream!

Birgit, thanks for sharing your experience. The first few days are pretty miserable, good to hear it will get better.

You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face.

Mistakes are the portals of discovery.

Don't be afraid to give your best at what seemingly are small jobs. Every time you conquer one it makes you that much stronger. If you do the little jobs well, the big ones will tend to take care of themselves.

It is never too late to be what you might have been.

Fortunately there are good alternatives for those foods that I used to love. For special occasions like birthdays we make our own cakes with nut flours (to avoid the grain) and using a sugar alcohol like Erythritol and also Stevia as sweetener. For home-made ice cream we use real heavy cream with a sweetener and a flavor of our choice, fresh fruit, nuts etc. If you google low-carb or paleo and cake or ice cream you'll get a huge number of recipes that are great. emoticon
If I'm in a social situation now where birthday cake is served I can have just one tiny piece, about a teaspoon full, but, frankly, I'd rather tell people that cake (the standard type) does not agree with me for health reasons. Most people react very positively when I explain that my blood sugar levels go dangerously high when I eat sugar and it gives me a chance to educate children without preaching to them.

That's really where I am. I appreciate your input Birgit - I need the encouragement. But maybe it is more that I choose to continue to celebrate special times with special treat foods. The trouble is that for me, it is too easy to let those foods become everyday foods. I hope I can keep a good balance and truly change the way I view food.

The more I think about it the more convinced I become that even though it sounds like a great
plan I probably can't do it. To me it would mean giving up things like birthday cake with the grandkids and the occasional ice cream cone. Maybe it's not that I can't but that I won't. I am working at limiting treats to treat-times - so far so good. I made it a personal Spark Streak for myself and that seems to help.

Teacher,
I also thought for a long time I could not do that but found it is far easier to do than to eat sugar in moderation. Only the first few weeks are hard when you may have physical cravings for sugar. After that it's only emotional temptations as long as you don't let yourself get hungry and eat enough higher protein and higher-fat foods.

Very good article! It is challenging, but to be honest, I'm not sure I could do that. I definitely need to cut back though and make conscious decisions about when to eat sugar rather than have it be an automatic part of my day.

Saddhu,
if you passed out from low blood sugar it is even more important that you avoid all sugar, including sugar in high-sugar fruit, as you may be diabetic. This is very serious, so please get tested. A Hemoglobin A1c test is one good way to find out and if necessary you can get it at Walmart for 10 dollars. A complete bloodpanel at the doctor's office would be better. Getting blood sugar levels that are that low is not normal. I am eating no sugar including almost no sugar from fruit (except about 1/3 cup of berries/day) and from dairy (only butter, cream, yogurt) and my blood sugars are never below 80.
It is eating sugar and starches that cause the extreme swings in blood sugar that include levels that are dangerously high (over 140) and dangerously low (under 70).
Please take care of yourself.

Birgit

I gave up sugar in all forms before and passed out in ballet class. Do NOT take it too literally. Sugar is in virtually all our foods: ketchup, soup, breads, salad dressing, spaghetti sauce, "adult" cereals etc., It is not just in the obvious foods. DO give up soda, sweets, added sugar, and excessively sweet cereals, etc... But anyone who truly gives up all sugar eats nothing but fresh fruits, veggies, meats and cheeses, all without any dressings or condiments. Note that fruits and dairy contain natural sugars, fructose and lactose respectively, so the definition of "sugar" becomes very important here. (I am vegetarian so a completely sugarless diet would be extremely limiting.) Always read labels. You will see that 99% of prepared foods have sugar! (Sugar = high fructose corn syrup, molasses, honey, sucrose, brown sugar, etc) Sugar should be minimized, but there is no need to go to extremes. Weight loss is mostly about calories and portion control plus exercise.

You might find that having a sugar alternative can help, too. I find using stevia and eryhritol as sweeteners (inc. chocolate made with it) are a step in the right direction, as long as I consume on very small quantities of them (or else my blood sugars will still go up).
I also find I do much better when limiting the amount of fruit and eliminating tropical fruit.

This was an interesting article. I think I'd probably feel better if I eliminated all sugar but don't think I'm ready for that yet. What I'm considering is eliminating all obvious sweets (cake, pie, cookies, donuts, etc). I didn't think I could do it but using their idea of having a treat once a month might make the difference for me. Saying "never" is hard but knowing I can have the treat once a month sounds doable.
