Today I had a breakthrough. I have been tracking my dietary habits for a couple weeks. I was wondering when I had sugar cravings and today I just figured it out.
When I find myself struggling to make a healthy dinner, like I am too tired or in a hurry, I find I start snacking on sweet stuff. So, my solution will be to cook several healthy meals at once and hopefully not find myself hurrying to find a healthy meal.
Let's see if this solves my sweet tooth issues.

I did pretty good last week. My fiance asked to make cupcakes twice and I only had two. That's a MAJOR accomplishment! I also had only one piece of cake at my bachelorette party Saturday.

In addition to that, I didn't add sugar to anything this week. I was tempted a few times, but I asked myself WHY was I adding it and I never had a good reason, so I put the sugar back.

Eating sweets slowly is much easier than scarfing them down without tasting them. I'm VERY
proud of myself.

Today is day 4 for me and the sugar cravings are diminishing quickly. A week ago I couldn't imagine a day without sugary, sweet food or thinking that fruit could satisfy those cravings but today I'm a believer! And a happy one at that. Blood sugars have dropped from high teens to single digits and my rapid acting insulin from 50 to 30 units (per meal). I thought my blood sugars were hopelessly increasing and my insulin too. I hope my Dr will be as impressed as I am.

Thank you Kaylees!! I like the idea of learning how to make Starbucks - I LOVE Starbucks and where I live in MT it is not readily available. Today I didn't eat quite right but I didn't blow it I went for a walk instead.

So far so good! I'm definately taking steps in the right direction. I started trying to develop healthier habits just a week ago, so I'm not as far along as some here are. I'm taking it day by day and trying to manage to eat healthy even in circumstances that make it more difficult. We had a cookout at my inlaw's last weekend, but I stuck with the baked chips and one burger (added lettuce and tomato to it since there wasn't an alternative to the burger). I felt pressured into taking some homeade ice cream. I would have been fine waiting and having some frozen yogurt with fruit, but there was pressure from other angles and I didn't want to hurt anyones feelings, so I took a tiny scoop and ate it slowly so no one would be able to tell how little I took. We had another cookout with friends last night but I was able to have a salad and a few baked chips, whole wheat bun, low fat mayo, low fat cheese, etc. because I had more control over what foods were served. I've not completely cut out soda or my beloved starbucks coffee, but I'm having them use non-fat milk, and leave off the whip cream, and drinking more water so I don't drink as many soda's in a day. It's all a process for me, moving step by step towards a healthier me. I'm proud of my accomplishments so far, but I know this is a lifelong process to become a health conscious. I'm up for the task and I am really working hard at sticking with it. So far I've made it 7 days, exercising everyday, which may be a record for me. I'm just hoping my sparkpeople membership will help keep me motivated to stick with it this time.

I've always been a health freak and kept my weight in check. I've never had a sweet tooth before, but at the start of the year I broke up with my partner of two years and my life basically fell apart. That's when my healthy lifestyle flew very quickly out the window, I lost a lot of weight, wasn't eating, and that's when the sugar cravings began. It's been around 5 months now since I crashed, and within the past month or two I've gained 13kg due to my bad diet and new found sweet tooth! For the past month I've been trying to find the motivation, inspiration and will power to get back into my old healthy habits but it's only been the past week that I have stuck to it and I'm feeling the most motivated then I ever have. I'm handling my suger cravings fairly well, the first few days were rough and I may have given myself a treat (last Friday, Saturday, Sunday), but these past few days I've over come most cravings even though they are still pretty intense. I've found some great substitutes and I just remember to stop and think before I put junk in my mouth, "Do I really need this?"..."NO!"

I feel awesome. I have more energy now. My joints don't hurt as bad. Diet soda tastes terrible, regular soda tastes too sweet. I'm to the point if I eat too much sugar, I feel physically ill. So happy I joined this challenge.

I have kept a diary and found that I crave sweet stuff only in the afternoon and evening....mainly evening and that's when things get out of control. I have found the diary to be a wake up call and it has actually started to help in the first week as I am more conscious of what I'm putting in my mouth as I have to record it. I have given in to cravings this week but far less than I thought I would. I'm loving this challenge so far, I think it's really going to help! emoticon

I am doing so well now I cannot believe it. It must have been my time. I am such a junk food junkie with a pension for all kinds of sweet goodies, desserts and candy. I would usually get so cranky during a sugar crash that my family would avoid me (well, they wanted to). I think that is why my husband became such a sugar pusher! lol. Now, for some unknown reason, I can leave it alone completely! It is this challenge. It so encourages me not to cheat (because I would have to write it down), that I have finally achieved success! And early in the challenge, too! I can see myself going to the end easily... as long as I know I can someday slowly bring some sweets back into my diet. I have proven to myself that I have it in me. What a wonderful feeling! Another thing that has helped has been the 17 Day Diet. Not because it is a great diet, but because it keeps you full on veggies and protein and cuts the carbs so that your blood sugar levels are always steady. I am not touting this diet for everyone, or anyone... but I am sure it is why I am having such an easy time on this challenge. Before it, I was cheating daily! (That was before the Sweet Tooth Challenge I was just cheating on my dieting efforts). Anyway, I am walking on clouds with energy without those sweets, and I love the new control I have. You can offer me sweets, you can leave them out in front of me, I can buy them for my spouse, and it doesn't bother me! Also, I no longer get angry or grumpy either. You gotta feel this way ... it is so empowering for a sweets junkie.

We improve ourselves by victories over ourself. There must be contests, and you must win. Edward Gibbon - English historian of Rome (1737 – 1794)

I am so glad I found this challenge. I so need help! My fault is home, we always have candy at home. My husband is a representative for a candy company and he so thoughtfully brings me and the kids goodies all the time. I started the challenge two days ago and I have only lost my focus twice. I think that's good.

Sometimes systems help me, but sometimes I just get lost in a complicated system that I'm not motivated to use. So far, this one is helping me:

I keep a bright pink marker near my calendar (the one on my wall, right in front of me, where I can see it all day). If I have sweets, I write a big pink S on the day. If I can remember what I ate, I write that next to it. If I can't remember what it was or where I was when I ate it... that's a problem. For the month of April I already have six S-Days, one of which I can't recall.

There are three things I don't count:
maple syrup, honey, and my tiny squares of dark chocolate. Those three things alone I've managed to control, and I can eat in moderate amounts without feeling the addiction. It's things like a cookie as I walk by this bakery, or taking someone's Easter candy when they offer to share with me that I need to reign in.

Looking at all those S-es is like a gentle slap on the wrist, and I have a very clear, visual goal in front of me: to not let the rest of the calendar fill with pink S-es!

Neglect is not a reward. Junk is not a treat.

This sugar stuff has been so much harder for me to quit than alcohol ever was! I went 62 days without any sugar or artificial sweetener, fell off the wagon, and have been bouncing around like a pogo stick ever since. I can't be anywhere near the stuff! I seem to be doing fine then BAM!!! So...I'm going to take a deep breath and start anew. Fall down, get back up.

I am "still on the wagon" so to speak. I think sugar is an addiction for me so I'm treating it as such for now. It's only been a few days but I feel good about it. Every evening without eating sugar at home I see as a victory (The daytime isn't bad b/c I'm at work or running around picking up kids--don't think about it. ) I've cut back on TV time which is a trigger for me to munch away on whatever I find and I've been exercising daily in the late afternoon. That has helped keep me on track. We are all going to do this! Thanks to all for posting--it helps to know I'm not alone with the cravings!

Hi all! Today is my first time in this group- I SO need it-went to the grocery store today and ice cream was buy 2 get 2 free-couldn't help myself!!!! Uggh as a result I ate almost a whole pint by myself at lunch by 3pm I was filled with regret-the only good thing was I got motivated to start over and signed up for this group! I am also going to the gym tonight to kick-box it off. That is one way to jump-start the motivation!!! Tomorrow I am researching all the hidden sugar in my house and coming up with a weekly game plan for meals. I can do this-last time I gave up sugar I lost 40 pounds-problem is in 5 years I am back to my old habits. Time to start over!!!

Off to a bad start. I joined this challenge a couple of days ago and ate Cold Stone ice cream last night. However, I woke up this morning motivated and determined to cut out sugar. I started working on this weeks actions. Also, when I get the cravings for sweets, I think I will log into here for support rather than grabbing sweets. So far so good today. I haven't had any sweets. Although I just finished my lunch and I always crave sugar after a meal. So at the moment I am fighting off the urge. I think if I can just stay out of the kitchen for the next 15-30 mins, the craving will pass.

EDIT-----------------------------------
Just wanted to come back and say its about a half hour later. I kept busy and fought the urge to go get something sweet and it actually worked! I don't really have the craving anymore!

NORTHWOODSMOM8--All I can say is WOW! 26 days without sugar! And terrific weight loss! I am just starting so I hope my ticker looks likes yours as the months progress! I know you must be frustrated with those last pounds but take it from me--you are doing great! I want to follow in your footsteps! Keep going--it will happen! Thanks for the recipe!

I am only on day 3 but considering how much candy is in my house right now and at work, I'm feeling pretty good about not giving in. I'm using teas and replacing sugary foods with fruit or vegetable goodies whenever I start going nuts wanting to eat that sugar...any advice for a newbie on how you've kept it up??

Today is day 26 for no sugar and I feel really good, although I wish I could take off these 5 pesky pounds! One friend took off 5#'s in 5 days of no sugar! I don't think I've lost 1#.

My ABSOLUTE favorite 'no refined sugar' treat is these homemade hot fudge brownie larabars. MMMMMM! Dates, walnuts, cocoa and vanilla. Here is the link:

Yesterday, someone brought in Fannie May candies, about 3 boxes, and put them in the work room, I refrained from eating any all day, until around 3 o'clock, I walked past the box and decided to just look inside to see what they look liked, I opened up the box and...wait for it...wait for it...THE BOX WAS EMPTY!!!! Thank goodness!!! emoticon

Today, not so good, had a strong craving for something sweet. gave in, ate a pack of Hotess Gems donuts!
I'll just have to do better tomorrow!

I guess I'll have to restart my ticker....

Today I did a LOT better than yesterday! The only "sweet" things I ate today were strawberries and a yogurt. :)

Week 1, Day 2 of the challenge..Just started but being on the challenge and just having to think about it has helped a LOT! Yesterday, I walked by the candy jar at work, thought about it, and then just walked on by and had a piece of fruit at my desk. Today was at home surrounded by the kids' easter candy and other sweet goodies from the weekend. Got really hungry right before lunch and almost reached for those darn jelly beans...but I thought of the challenge, drank a big glass of water while fixing myself a healthy lunch. Sugar avoided! All in all- So far, so good. Night-time is definitely my weakest point of the day. I'm also trying to cut back on TV watching to help reduce mindless eating--of which I am very guilty.

I just joined, especially after what I ate today. I had two snickerdoodle cookies and a piece of cake at work. :( Ugh, sweets have ALWAYS been my downfall, so this is why I have joined. I seriously need help with this.

Not doing too bad. Still craving the sweets, but did eat an apple and strawberries to try and satisfy the urges. Taking it one meal at a time and one day at a time.

Well today is the first day of the challenge for me in the first week and while I had a couple small sips of pepsi and one piece of chocolate, I was determined not to go overboard and I didn't. I have had nothing but water today over and above the couple of sips of pepsi and I've been eating much better today ~ I have a LONG ways to go, however I am very proud of myself and for me its all about baby steps :)

week 1-day 2: Chocolate cravings kicked in this afternoon but I managed to subdue them. I think if I make it pass the first week, I'll be okay. Man! did I want a chocolate chip cookie but I didn't indulge. Thought of my questions: Will this help my long term goals or is it short-term gratification. I'm not going for the short-term, not anymore!

Utterly hopeless! It is so hard to check into a computer! I have no trouble with exercising and discipline, but food is my demon! Grrr If I had a personal chef, or all my meals/snacks were lined up for me, all prepared and I all I had to do was eat then be on my way, with no thought at all put into planning, or shopping, or cost...then Bam! I would be sorted. Just can't do this computer thing, i end up deleting most out of my inbox without even reading, sorry...probably why I still struggle with being over weight! Don't want to be skinny...just don't want to be fat either an carrying around excess anymore.

First week was educational and eye opening, causing me to adjust my previous Nutritional Plan.
Second week starting off on different plan, today was with sweets cut in half. Egg hunt went well with added activity for the day.

This has been a great week. And to make it perfect my nephew and his family had me over and they had a very light lunch for me. They have been so supportive of me on this journey and in doing this. It has been wonderful. Hope you all had a great Easter and a wonderful week-end.

Refocused on Nutrition Tracking this week on own Log. Well aware that I need to use
Spark's Tracker. When using own log- have not been consistent. When used Spark's Tracker was much more consistent. lacking allotted vegetables this week also. So second week needs adjusted big time.

Doing well for the most part...actually better than I expected. I did indulge today and had a one scoop hot fudge sundae. But that is my big indulgence for the week. I am trying to have one treat a week, except for my coffee--have to have sugar in that.

It's only been about 20 minutes but pretty good so far. emoticon I know I'm just supposed to eat like normal and track what I'm eating, how I feel, when I eat etc. this first week, but I think the notion of tracking will help me make better choices. The true test will be Sunday at my mother in laws. She always has bowlfuls of sweets that I LOVE!!! emoticon

Yesterday morning we had a community garage sale. The kids in the garage 3 down from me had a bake sale. I wouldn't even look over most of the time as the cupcakes were screaming to me. Just before I was ready to close up, I took 3$ over, handed it to the kids and told them to pick out a cupcake for each of them on me. The look on their face was priceless; the sugar I didn't consume even more so :-)

Awful. I was supposed to be just finishing week 3 and I know I had sugar just about every day. I'm frustrated because since I joined SparkPeople a little over a month ago I haven't lost an ounce and have actually gained a few pounds. It's my fault cause I rarely stay within calorie range. I do everything else, exercise, read motivational things on the site, but I just don't apply the healthy eating. I can't see how eating 1200-1500 calories per day isn't a "diet"? It really feels like one! I just don't have my head focused on losing weight and give in so easily to eating whatever I want. I've lost weight in the past, after having kids, and I was successful because I got obsessed about it.

I got the SB book a long time ago. I think it's a good plan, but again, I never actually followed it. I seem to have this habit of intending to start eating more healthy but never actually follow through. Hopefully I'm going to get focused and stay mindful soon. I'm fighting internally with myself.

I know sparkpeople isn't the place to talk about diets but have any of you tried south beach? I'm omitting the word diet because I think SB is much more of a lifestyle change. I went on it about a week and a half ago to tame my sugar cravings and so far I'm amazed at the results. I'm not saying I'm totally cured but lets just say I'm no longer buying king sized chocolate bars at the grocery store because frankly I just don't crave them. What I like most about the book is that the author created the meal plan for his cardiology patients to get healthier and in the process, these patients dropped weight and, eventually many also dropped their medications. Anyway I just wanted to mention it because I had previously been struggling (for about a year and a half) with my sugar/binge problems.

I am just starting week two. Sadly my first week on this challenge didn’t give me a clear picture of where I stand in relationship with sugar. My problem or blessing (depending on how one looks at it) is that I experience periods of not craving sugar & my week one seems to have been the start of such a period of time. Even so I am determined to continue with the four-week process to see what I glean through it. I may need to begin with week one again after the forth week.

From past experience I do know that keeping sweets out of our home is a big help in my controlling sugar intake. If it isn’t handy I won’t go out & seek it! Bring it into our home & it seems to “call to me”!

May you continue to enjoy success in this area!

I think this first week is just a discovery week for me. What am I eating, where are the hidden sugars. Wheat bread and beer, and salsa, like way down in the ingredients list: these are the surprising areas I've been taken aback by this week.

@Crystal - I've found that yogurt (plain or vanilla) with fruit really licks the craving. you can also try greek yogurt with fruit for an even lower sugar count!

I've been jonsing on the fruit lately! I'm doing pretty good :) Been managing to stay away from the sugar for the most part. With the exception of my daily starbucks. But that's as much for medical reasons (the soy helps my seizures) as for the sugar :)
