Sue, I don't have the answer, but I have found that none of my questions have been answered. Perhaps this site is not monitored by anyone in particular? Disappointing, for sure.

I have a question regarding the amount of natural sugars versus added sugars in foods in general. I thought there was a way to determine how much of the sugar on the nutrition label was natural and which wasn't. This may be similar to the previous question, but can anyone help me here?
If we want to cut out the added sugars and how to cut that out of our diets, then we need to know how to figure that out.

Thanks,
Sue

This may have been addressed but I haven't seen it.
Is there any difference between "natural sugar" and "refined sugar"? The reason I ask, is that my DH has some dried fruit which shows 21 grams of sugar with a 1/4 C serving. I told him that is extrememly high and he says not so as it is natural sugar.....I need an answer....
Thanks.

Guess I can ask this here, I'm still new traveling around Spark and I'm not sure where to put all my blogs about my cravings and over eatings? Can someone please give me direction? Thanks!

Just joined the challenge. I am a true sugar addict, need that Coke in the morning to get going, and donuts or sweet roll for breakfast. Then some sort of candy during the day at work. However, I am really good about nothing at night. Do not understand why. Maybe I am sugared out by that time. Really look forward to this challenge. I was sick last week and did not have a Coke for 4 days, lost 11 pounds, that should tell me something.

We do not sync with other nutrition trackers since we have our own. You can find calories burned for different exercises in some articles but also if you look them up in the fitness tracker. My question is this, can I use another nutrition app and have that info synch with SP?
I really like using the Loseit app for counting calories and tracking my food but I also like the SP
Nutrition Tracker, so is there any way that I can use both

Another question I have is, is there a place where you can find calories burned for different exercises. I haven't always been able to find this and have gotten a little frustrated looking for that info on the web?
Ali.

I have completed the first two weeks of this challenge, but have not received week 3. Can someone please help?

By the way, I started week 2 on Feb. 20th so week 3 is pretty late.

I just joined this challenge, but I am definitely a sugar addict. My latest sweet treat is tootsie roll, caramel apple lolypops. I include them in my second snack, so they are accounted for. The problem is a developing addiction to them. I just finished the last one tonight and am not going to have any in March, which believe me is a sacrifice. I am also diabetic so want to eliminate most refined sugar!
Wish me luck with a lolypop abstinent March!

Took a look at your program and it says "Challenge Progress: Week 1/4, started 1/18/2014"

You get a new weekly email each week and not based on when you click the box of completion. Part of this weeks challenge is to Record your sugar habits all week long. Hopefully you can learn more about your habits as you continue on this week and will be ready for week 2 when it comes on the 25th.

Sometimes they get caught in a filter by your provider. No worries, just go to the challenge team home page and click on the link for the week you are on and you will find everything there right next to the box you check when you complete the week.

Tanya ~ I knew the sticky posts were from the team leaders, but since you can only have 3 per forum, I wasn't sure about the rest of them. Thanks a lot. Don't want to miss something I need to look into.

If you go to the team home page and look at each forum you will see the designated threads are "sticky" and at the top of each forum for each week. Hope that helps.

Hi everyone. I started this today. So started Week 1 and am working through the steps. I did the survey which flashed up my results at the end. Is there anyway I can find those results again?

Thank you!

Can we 're-do' this challenge?
I know, that must sound bad, but my goal is do away w/ the 'obvious sweets' completly. (I have a bulging disc problem & eating less sugar helps, since sugar is an inflammation-causing food) I did great from July 20th, thru Sept 22nd -- Sept was my hubby's bday & he wanted a fancy cake. I got it for him & had 2 small pieces (over 2 days) but it did nothing for me &I was back on the wagon! Then this weekend, I didn't even log my stuff onto Sparkpeople b/c I had some carmel popcorn Friday night, Saturday we went to a wedding & I has some cookies & a piece of wedding cake. Then yesterday we went to my daughters house & I had a brownie!
I want to re-do the challenge. I know I can do it. But Can I get points & trophies, again?? I want the reminders too!

New to the challenge. I started yesterday, and I did well. But today, I am exhausted. Normally, when I feel like this, I grab a diet mountain dew, but I don't think that will count for this. I don't have any green tea, and my unsweetened tea isn't cutting it for me. I think today I will be bad, because I'm just so tired, but tomorrow, I will be better. I just need to know for the future what I can do please.

ABYSTAR, can I start this challenge over? I was not following it as I should.
I have been so excited since I started it.
I've been so good about my carb intake. I'm back to my last years feeling of motivation. I feel like exercising every day. I rarely miss a day. If I do, I try to make up that time during the week. I'm using the nutrition tracker for every thing I put in my mouth. The only time I ever have trouble since I learned how to use the tracker last year, has been when I eat something that isn't easy to figure out because of many items in that meal. I love accuracy! I must say my carb. intake has been the best ever. I have not eaten any sugar candy. I only eat sugar free.
I love this challenge very much. It is turning around my life for the better! emoticon
I will emoticon .
I have much more energy!

YES!!! I LOVE THIS CHALLENGE!!! emoticon It's the greatest challenge ever. It was the answer for me to get serious.

Spark People Team Leader, GLITTERGIRL, from Team, "I Can't Do This On My Own", helped me reach my goal in 2012. I was able to maintain my weight for several months, but now I have to get serious again as much of my hard work I let go of, putting my focus on another issue. Is there an easy way to follow this Challenge and then check off as we go along?
I have done so well with the fact that I'm recording my food again. I'm measuring things and no sugar candy.
I notice my ankles are not swelling as they had been. I am so happy. I feel motivated to care about my eating habits, and I try to exercise daily.
I feel so very good about this challenge.

I've just got to tell someone; and I know this might not be a big deal to some of y'all, but this is a huge step for me. I HAVE NOT HAD ANY CAKES, COOKIES, PIES, ICECREAM, CANDY, ETC, IN OVER 4 WEEKS!!!!! Not even any of those little 100 Calorie packets (that is really just portion control). I know there is more to cutting sugar, than the 'snacks' that I have cut, but hey, I am one of those people that 'had to have' sweets everyday/several times a day!!! This is huge for me!!! emoticon
I have never gone this long w/o sweet-yummies! I fight it every night. I know it is one-step-at-a-time as I still have been eating instant high-fiber, oatmeal & a Vitatop for breakfast (and I know it has sugar) and other foods throughout the day, but I have cut out the 'obvious sweets'. It has been tough and I don't know how much longer I can do it.
It is just that I had a rough time w/ my back, about a month ago. I have a bulging disc and I know that sugar is an inflammation causing food so I thought I'd try, a little at a time, to start cutting various 'bad' foods.
I just have to set my goal now, for cutting other foods that include high doses of sugar.

From what I know, I gt them once a week in my e-mail. I'm an admin so not sure if it is the same for going through the program. Also you can check your e-mail boxes on mail from the STC group. If it isn't checked off on the page with all the other groups you are in, you won't receive any. Greg

It doesn't matter if someone takes a few days or or months to gain hold of their sugar intake. You have all the more reason to grab hold and take care of it now JO74555. Once you are pre, the odds are you will get diabetes. But a healthy now means you will not be tied to monitoring and daily blood tests for decades to come. Exercise does help and it doesn't have to be sweating out gallons of water for hours everyday, but a few minutes here and there can help a ton. Might try a bit more tea or flavored water possibly in exchange for water intakes. Females tend to need less than the 8 cups anyways. Just depends.

glad that it's still active. of course this challenge is gonna take me longer to be successful at than the 4 weeks shown. every couple days i fall down... some days a few in a row. but i keep starting over because i really need to overcome this yo-yo un-leveling of my blood sugar.

Keeping my chin up... guarded, but up :)

I love tea too, but being from up north, always thought the "sweet tea" here in TN where I live now was TOO sweet. You might try ordering like I do, a half & half (yes they know what I mean, lol) gives you half straight tea mixed in with the sweet. Maybe start to wean yourself that way. If you are making at home, try using a little less at a time? Good luck!

QUESTION???
First day on this challenge.
Assessment said I have a situational problem. I feel this is pretty acutrate.
My only question is, now when I want Ice cream I have a 90 calorie WW latte bar. They are huge & really satisfy my wanting ice cream. I also use sweetener in tea & zero calorie sticks in my water, usually some tea flavor. Does this mean I am in control? Or no, cuz still having the sweet?

Things do not change; we change.

Take a different route home and pay attention to the scenery, etc and you may find that you don't think about it anymore because you are focusing on something new..or change one routine thing for a couple days..works like a charm.

HOW THIS CHALLENGE WORKS

This official challenge was created by SparkPeople's coaches as a fun way for members to get motivation, tips and support to reach a new goals. This SparkTeam works much like all other SparkTeams, except that it has a few special features and a set program you can follow. Here's how it works.

1. Join the Team. Click the "Join This Team" button at the top of the team page to become a member. If you're not already a SparkPeople.com member, you'll have to create a free account to join this challenge. This will mark the start of your four-week challenge and trigger a set of four weekly emails to begin.

2. Read your challenge email each week. It contains action steps, helpful tips and articles, and all the info you need for the challenge.

3. Complete the action steps in each email. When you're done, mark the "Action Step" checkbox at the top of the Team page to show that you completed the action steps each week.

4. Interact with others. This Team is for you to share tips, ask questions and get support while following the challenge. Support is key to reaching your goals, so the more you share, the better!

5. Earn your trophy. By completing the action steps in your emails, checking them off at the top of the Team page, and remaining on the Team for at least four weeks, you will earn a special SparkTrophy for your SparkPage!

That's it! You can also use the Team message boards to correspond with others who are following the challenge. When you're finished with the challenge, you can stay in this Team to help others or try the challenge again if you'd like!

Hope this helps. Also go to the General Team Discussion Forum above.

I am a sweet tea junkie!!! Everyone in my house is a sweet tea junkie. But I have started to go half and half. Half sweet tea and half unsweetened tea. Not quite the same but it's a start at cutting back on the sugar,

I am back, my dr asked me to cut down on sugar and carbs, so this is the place to do it, I have a sweet tooth big time, but I also have a ear infection (fungal) and he said it was possible that it makes me crave the sweets, anyway, I am cutting way back on carbs and trying to cut out the extra sugar, even way less fruit which I almost live on some days. anyway, I am back and would love some suggestions

This is a comment not a question:

I've been drinking iced herbal tea to combat sugar cravings! Just an herbal tea bag with ice cubes and very cold water! I can get nice flavours that satisfy the craving without the calories or chemicals!

Commercial iced tea is NOT low sugar!

If you don't like the road you're walking, start paving another one!

One question I have is about yogurt. So... I've eaten plenty of plain yogurt with no added sugars save for fruit (bananas, strawberries, etc). However, in order to curb situational cravings of sugar, I've been using yo-plait light yogurt to keep me from grabbing cookies for free.
The rest of my food consumption for the day involves no added sugars, only sugars from fruits and veggies (and the occasional piece of dark chocolate).
My question is, how many grams of sugar a day are allowable each day when I'm consuming between 1400-1700 cals a day?

Question about the team goal: Is the blog/journal supposed to be about my progress in the Sweet Tooth Challenge or my healthy progress in general??

Are there certain days that you must weigh in?

I just took the short assessment, results below, and there was a definite problem answering the questions because the front (a) might be correct, but not the follow on (b). I agree that I have situational struggles with sugar but not when I'm at home or at social gatherings do I have a "struggle" with sugar.

The moment is within me.

I could be at home or at social gathering and see sweets and not want them at all BUT then one day I will eat, say an animal cookie, and just can't stop. I don't think its emotional because it happens anywhere, anytime, I could be having a great time, whether tired or not, lonely or with people, and so on. SO is it the moment within me or the food itself that is my trigger? BUT how could it be the food if another day I can eat the same food and STOP, no problem?

I think I'll definitely have to try the journal thing and see if it answers some questions or clear my confusion.

With all this said, I KNOW I can do it!!
----------------------------------------

Your Results You Have Situational Struggles with Sugar

It's easy for you to keep sugar out of your house, but you have trouble practicing moderation around sugar in situations (like social gatherings) that are out of your control. When you're watching friends or co-workers chow down on easily-accessible sweet treats, it's easier for you to justify it, too.

Start taking steps now to stop your cravings and break your addiction once and for all. Remember that sugar does not magically gain the ability to control you the second you are put in a room with a buffet table or a sheet cake. The only person who can decide what goes into your mouth is you. You can do this!

Know ye that ye are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you. 1 Cor 3:16

I think that depends on what you mean by cold turkey or how you go about it. We often think of sugar or other food addictions differently then we do alcohol addiction. We expect alcoholics to stop drinking entirely, because it is a known fact that most experiments in moderation end in failure for alcoholics. Sugar is no different. Moderation would be lovely but for most of us its a pipe dream. So just like a crack addict or an alcoholic we have to avoid the stuff completely and develop a completely different lifestyle in order to accomplish this. Just like an alcoholic the keys to success are developing an awareness and understanding of what is driving the addiction, get the stuff out of our lives, including in small amounts (did you know that there is sugar in most table salt), get the non-sugar sweet stuff that triggers our taste for it out of our lives (eg diet Coke), set short and long term goals, replace bad habits with good ones (one of the hardest things for me) and find a source of support. I for one would love to have an email/text message buddy that I could run to to talk me off the edge every time I felt the urge to reach for a cookie. Habits take time to change, but addiction to sugar is like any other addiction - it takes abstinence to truly overcome.

Am I missing something? I wanted to add grams of sugar to my nutrition tracker and can only find sucrose or lactose and other "oses". What about grams of sugar? Sugar is listed in the nutrition information for each item I track.

Thanks!!

Divineprincess,
I just read your post today and thought of sharing my experience. i was able to overcome cookies, fries, pizza by asking myself repeatedly what it is that made me so happy when i ate them? at first i got no answer, then i blamed outside influences. later i realized my issues were 1. emotional (holding back and not expressing) and 2. i always thought these foods were happy food. i must admit i had a hard time getting myself to answer.

maybe there is a trigger to the craving? maybe it is what everybody likes to eat and we feel odd if we should not be eating sweets? is it time to question what we have accepted as okay?

food can be a psychologically linked habit. if its hard to break away then it probably has a mind-and-emotion element to it. it may need time and kindness to oneself, to wean the habit.

It is not only a lifestyle change - it is a new mindset! Taking control is hard, but it does work if one just stops buying the junk. I think that is the key - just walk on by...Good Luck!!! Rhoda LI, NY

Hey guys! I'm new as of hmm...five minutes ago lol I want to track my sugar intake via the nutritional tracker on here because I have a very strange schedule that changes constantly so keeping a journal would be a bit difficult for me at times. What should I add to my tracker so I can properly cover my intake? Thanks!

I'm new to this particular challenge, but my sweet tooth is going crazy and threatening to control me, and I can't have that.

It's weird. I love, love, love glazed donuts. Yet I can walk past them in the grocery store, the bakery shop, the break room and not even be tempted to nibble.

Candy bars, however, are another story. I have to have a candy bar (or two or several) every day. Right now I'm on a Baby Ruth kick. Last year I craved Clark Bars and Starburst Fruit Chews. It's crazy. It really is like an addiction!

How can I not be tempted by cakes, pies, cookies, donuts ---all of which I love--and yet cave in completely to candy?

Hi, I just joined and I need help. Is the goal here to eliminate sweets from our eating plan or reduce the use of sugar ? I have a sugar addition and I have tried "cold turkey" and it does not work long term.

Each day is a great new start for whatever you need it to be. Embrace each day.
