I'm strapped to the computer all day today but the dogs are telling me I need to break away for an hour or so with them up into the trails behind the house, so I shall after submitting this post.

I just found out I might be moving earlier than expected - first week of April - so my stress level is sky high. Of course, this is all dependent on R finding us a place to live, and so far, she hasn't.

But I've given her an ultimatum: she either finds a place to live, or she has to quit her dream job and we all move to Germany and go on unemployment.

It sort of put in perspective for her the gravity of the situation. I have nowhere to go, and she HAS to find a place for us to live, and something within her salary constraints. The last place was going to be almost $2500 a month with utilities. She's well-paid, but heck. We want to save some money and not spend $30k a year on rent and utilities. Yikes.

Anyway, I'm doing pushups and squats and crunches during computer breaks. It's a very heavy grading period for me now, so that's kinda the best I got. :)

You guys are cracking me up! Thanks for your sweet comments, though! And I still have no clue how I was able to pull off such nonsense. HAHA! Gotta say though, it's so extremely addictive, that I'm already thinking about what is next. I need to let my brain have a week off from it all though and get my priorities back in order with my regular life first! :)

Still have not done any exercise other than walking since the race. I went for a massage today that felt great and tonight I'm going for a 3 mile walk with my friend with the local running group run tonight. If it feels fine, then I will go for a SLOW 2-3 mile jog tomorrow. Last marathon in November I didn't run for a week, though I taught 3 classes before that. I feel a lot less sore this time.

What's everyone else up to?

Hahah - that's hysterical, Nancy. I'll qualify in my 60s at the rate I'm going. :)

Of course, by then I should have a hip replacement, so that will really help me, right???

Renee YOU ARE SO AWESOME!!! I am so impressed! If I keep at the same pace I'm running at, I'll qualify for Boston when I'm 75...LOL.

I am surprised at the pace you ran at that your hubby and kids could keep up trying to meet you at different spots along the course. How sweet!

Congratulations and I'm just thrilled to read your post!

YAY RENEE!

I thought of you all day and wondered how it went.

I'm so happy you had a great race, and YAY for Boston!

We're the same age, but you are SOOOOO much faster than me. :)

Glad it was such a beautiful one, too. Hooray for lovely courses!

Hi,Everyone! Greetings from Myrtle Beach! Ran the marathon this morning! :) I stayed healthy somehow around my contagious family and we had perfect running weather today! Race time was 6:30 am and the temperatures started in the high 30s, stayed in the 40's for the first 2 hours, moved to the 50's and finished low 60's- sunny skies, nice breeze, felt a headwind for only about half a mile during mile 24.

My chip time was 3:39:36! I qualified for Boston! I still can't believe it. My age group qualification time for 2013 is 3:45 (I'm 42), so that was my super secret dream goal. I would have been happy breaking 4:00 with this one, but I knew I wanted to start with my goal pace and keep assessing how I felt, fine with slowing down if need be. Honestly, i felt GREAT through the first 15 miles- somehow it felt like a training run. I felt loose, relaxed and extremely happy. The course was really beautiful and basically FLAT! There were several bands and DJ's lined up along the way and the fans were great. Nine miles of the course are along the ocean which was wonderful. My hubby and kids were able to drive around to 5 different spots along the course which was so much fun! My son ran along with me along the sidewalk shouting, "You can do this, Mom! Don't give up!". Loved it!!!

My split times based on my Garmin info (my Garmin final time was 3:39:43, and race chip time 3:39:36- I love how accurate my Garmin is!!!!)
1st 13.1- 1:50:40, 8:26 avg pace
2nd 13.1- 1:48:56, 8:18 avg pace
last 10k- 51:11, 8:15 avg pace
overall avg pace for race- 8:22

Funny thing, I felt better after this race than I did after Savannah. My quads are tight, but that is it right now! Walked for at least 2-3 miles after the race with the family for lunch and it probably helped me, but I'm really stiff right now. Took Aleve and an ice bath, too! :)

I'm going to write up a race report later with as many details as I can remember for my own log, but wanted to share my happy news with my Spark running friends ( I cut and pasted this from my other Spark team page)! :)

Ready to head into dreamland now! :)

Today's Run= no run- leaving for Myrtle Beach this afternoon! so far, still not sick, thank goodness. Current forecast for Saturday is low 55, high 61, 50% chance of rain with rain all weekend. :( Well, at least it won't be freezing cold or snowing (it was snowed out 2 years ago! They called it that morning and people were already out to go to the start line!!!). And, hey, I'll take rain over a stomach virus any day, though my stomach does feel a bit queazy this morning again- might just be excitement and jitters.

Might check in this weekend- bringing the laptop and free internet in the hotel room so I might get on at some point.

You guys have a great weekend if I don't chat with you again!

Somehow I missed these last 3 posts yesterday. Maureen, I'm thinking about your mom and the chemo. How did she feel after? Does she go in the following day for some sort of booster shot do you know? Every time my mom went in for that shot, she felt AMAZING- I remember telling her she wasn't supposed to feel BETTER after the treatments! I'm hoping that her body tolerated it well.

Thanks, Dash, DD was really happy. Now if I could just get my family well. As I type, hubby is driving DD to the local clinic to get checked out with this stupid rash she has developed. It is now EVERYWHERE. Tomorrow her class takes an all day field trip into Atlanta to the World of Coke and we are leaving as soon as she gets home from school for Myrtle Beach. I didn't want to wait until tomorrow and take her to her pediatrician because she has been looking forward to this field trip for months. Have any of you guys ever heard of a skin rash following a stomach bug? So weird. And super itchy. Then this morning i thought my son was just trying to get out of eating his oatmeal for breakfast (he had just said, "Do I have to eat oatmeal AGAIN?" So when he told me he wasn't hungry, I told him he had to eat it. Then I gave him his multi vitamin. Well, he proceeded to throw up everywhere. Again. This is two days after he had stopped throwing up, had eaten the last 4 meals fairly normally, and went back to school yesterday! I think it was that darn vitamin. I don't know but it is just lingering. I'm afraid to hear what the doctor says about my daughter though. Went to see her in her class performance of Romeo and Juliet today. Hysterical- she was Abram and Friar John, two minor characters. It was only a 25 minute modernized adaptation. We had gotten together a really good costume for the friar, whom she played second. Well she came back onstage with her Abram costume! I asked her after why she didn't change and she told me she had left the friar costume in the back of the auditorium. So much for spending over an hour working on that thing!

An hour later--- doctor thinks it is an allergy to something- possibly the spray Lysol I've been using or could be the new detergent I switched to, Tide with Febreeze which smelled AMAZING and I was psyched about! I'm hoping it was the Lysol because I washed about 8 loads of clothes with that stuff and put it all away. UGH.

Got in my last 3 miler today- felt good. Now I have to pack the kids and me tonight. THe weather forecast is calling for rain marathon day. YUCK! I'm hoping that it blows over.

Dash- I meant to add something else but sometimes SP just publishes my posts before I can edit!

Good luck on the boot camp, and good for you for signing up. You streak is really inspiring. I mean it. I'm loving hearing your excitement about everything. It's really great for me right now - reminds me that I can't get stuck in the mire right now...life goes on.

Maureen - where are you? We want to know how you're doing!

Ran 7 on the dread-mill yesterday. It felt really good, but I would rather be running outside. We got a little more snow. :-( My Greyhound isn't happy - he's bored and wants to get out running with me. I got "THE LOOK" when I got on my treadmill yesterday and didn't take him running.

Is it terrible that I am relieved when a friend of mine cancelled dinner tonight so that I can get to the gym to get a swim and strength workout out of the way? Where are my priorities???

I'm a tiny bit of a basketcase. I went to bed at 7:30 but couldn't sleep. I was texting with R at 2am b/c I still couldn't sleep. I tried meditating, I tried reading, I tried solitaire - nothing doing because I was so stressed about my mom starting chemo today.

Anyway, I drifted off only to be awoken at 2:30, 5:30 and 7:30 by sick dog with the runs who needed to go out.

I had conferences scheduled today, so when I finally tumbled out of bed at 9 am, just exhausted, first thing I did was send out a mass email to my students saying

MONDAY AND TUESDAY CONFERENCES CANCELLED DUE TO FAMILY EMERGENCY.

This is a tricky move on my part as it could cause more headaches than it temporarily cures, but I just am not functioning enough today for conferencing, nor am I remotely prepared.

So the plan?

Today: CATCH UP. Get the required grading done to do the conferencing W-F
Tomorrow: Go to Boulder. I'm out of pet food and "me" food, too. That's a whole day, but it needs to happen.
Wednesday-Friday: Conference

I'm not sure how/when workouts are going to happen this week. The best I can hope for today is a good dog hike in the mountains, but truthfully, I don't have much time. Same tomorrow.

Wish me luck guys - I'm really trying to get back on track.

The moral of the story? Refined flour in large quantities is poison to me! Exhaustion aside, I'm feeling much better today, but not 100%, though headache is gone, thank goodness.

Woo! Reneee! Congrats to your daughter - that is AWESOME! and prob made her feel a whole lot better!!!

Sorry about the pizza Maureen!!! Hopefully it will stop causing you pain today. I had pizza over the weekend too - a white one with ricotta, grilled chicken, spinach and tomato. MMM.
I am back on the wagon today though.

Signed up for the boot camp starting next week at my gym. I'm excited. Six weeks. 18 classes. Hoping this can jumpstart me back towards my lowest weight so I can get on with getting lower still. :)

How's everyone doing on this Monday?!

I did, but the issue isn't diarrhea or nausea - nothing like that.

Just severe colonic pain. It travels from under my right breast to just right of my left hip. It's excruciating.

This is the worst reaction I've ever had to gluten. I went gluten free initially to support R who has an intolerance. It made it easier for her if we did it together and ate the same stuff. She used to have this type of reaction all the time. Not me.

But now it's been 2 full years, and I guess I've *made* myself gluten-intolerant...at least in this quantity.

I've heard people can become lactose intolerant if they go vegan for a while and then go back to standard ovo/lacto veg. That didn't happen to me, however.

The human body is fascinating, isn't it??

Anyway, going to take dogs for a 2nd walk now. First one was quite short bc I was in so much pain and they are whining for more. I hate my life.

Maureen - that is awesome your daughter did so great!! I bet she wasn't the only one beaming from ear to ear!

I was fine after my pizza, but yesterday I had a piece of fried chicken. We were at a friend's house and there weren't any other food choices and WOW did it upset my stomach. I don't eat fried food and rarely eat processed food and it sat in my stomach like a rock for hours.

Renee - I have to have popcorn with movies too. Of course, then I have my dogs and parrot staring me down to join in. Once in a while I would like to eat a bowl of it in peace..... :-)

I'm going stir crazy (and so is my dog) because it's like 5 degrees outside and a below zero wind temp and have to run on the dread-mill again. I am starting to feel like a little hamster on an exercise wheel!

That really stinks, Maureen, I'm so sorry. :( Something that was so yummy and look how it came back to bite you in the end. That just goes to show how ultra healthy you must be all the time for it to have that kind of reaction! We get take out pizza for our kids pretty much every Friday night. And every Friday night I have a couple of bites, but I'm sure I'd be totally fine if I had a couple of slices. Goes to show you i'm NOT as diligent with my food I guess!!!

Cod was great! So, so good. I'll post more details in the food journal later. Hubby and I are getting ready to watch a movie. I HAVE to have popcorn with my movies or it just doesn't seem complete. AND there is no guilt about it. :)

That's so great that your daughter took 2nd despite being sick. Congratulations! You must be super proud!

I am so so so sick from the pizza.

You have no idea. Ugh.

The dog walks were hell for me, but it's not their fault that I'm an idiot, so they got 2 good hikes today.

Going to bed soon!

HI, Ladies,

Sitting like a couch potato on the couch HAHA. Went for my last long run of 8 miles today. Only have 3 more workouts until I leave for Myrtle Beach- Mon- step class, Tu- 4 miles, Wed- 3 miles, done! Wow! Felt good today, though it was the coldest training run this cycle- cold and windy- with wind chill it supposedly felt around 23 (haha- Maureen, you are probably laughing right now due to how cold you are used to!).

OK, that pizza sounds heavenly. I think we will be making another Boboli wheat one in a few days, it was so good last time for super bowl! TOnight will be broiled cod I just need to get my butt up and get started! Hmmmmm, pizza sounds so much better than cod right now. LOL!

Well, my daughter was able to make it to the meet last night! Four of her 15 girl team had come down with the same stomach bug and mine was the only one out of the sicklings to be able to compete last night. She definitely was off her game with strength and balance, getting over all lower scores than normal (vault was less powerful, bars as well, and she fell once on beam :( ). However, it all didn't matter when she rocked her floor routine and got her highest score of all times, a 9.5, and highest score of all four events for her entire team for the night! She was beaming from ear to ear. She was floor champ last night, and came in 2nd overall due to her high floor score. She was one happy girl, but felt really run down again today after the 8 hour excursion yesterday and getting to bed after 1am. Feeling fine now though. Yay :)

I really, REALLY wish I liked swimming. I just don't! It would be so good for me, too! You guys all rock.

ALright, I'm going to stand up and walk into the kitchen. NOW! :)

The pizza was from Gino's East. I brought four over to my friends' house - one for me, and one for each of them - and they all liked it but their 16 yr old who kept saying, "this is weird. This is so weird."

My friends loved it, though, and I was in heaven. SOOOO delish. I had it on Thursday night, too.

Anyway, I'm sick as all get out today - and was all last night, too, and the night before.

Turns out that if you live your life eating only whole grains and never eating anything processed or refined, that when you do, you are going to have intense abdominal cramping.

I'm in agony bc of pizza, and there are 4 more pizzas in my freezer. They might be sitting there for a while. I can't do this to myself anymore.

Morning!
Pizza must have been in the air - we had some last night. I've been great on my food choices, but broke down last night and had one extra piece. Ugh. (Okay, it was fantastic.)
Back on the horse today...

Swam yesterday and it was good. I'm slow but steady. It's really cold here, so of course the water feels like it's getting cold too. I have a spin class this morning and will run 6 later today.

Ebunny - glad to see everyone's getting better! Let us know how the competition went!

Swimming suits are cruel and unusual punishment, but Maureen you've got plenty of time. :-)

Hi, Guys!

Maureen, what kind of pizzas from chicago? Deep dish? OMG-I'd have eaten more than you did if I'd ordered 8!!!!! LOL! Have fun tonight!

OK, I'll check in with you and make sure you are staying focused with your work outs! Bathing suit countdown in 30!!!!

Daughter is feeling better today. Kept her home from school so she could sleep in and rest up. She's eating and feeling good, just don't know about how she'll feel with gymnastics! We leave in about 1.5 hours for ATL for the competition.

I taught my Jam class but had to skip my yoga class to get home to DD- I so needed the stretching, too, from all the running. Oh well. :( Guess I'll try to do some on my own this weekend.

Have a good night everyone!

Just checking in - No gym for me today yet again, but yet another whirlwind day.

I have to get off the computer and shower after posting this as I've been invited to this well-known fiber artist's studio. I want to take some pics for my art students. She's someone I know from my water aerobic classes that I don't teach anymore. Hahaha - last week we planned that I'd go back to her house with her after my class, but as I'm no longer teaching.... anyway, had to send an email saying I will just meet her at her house. I hope she doesn't ask any questions. I'm worried I might say too much and sound bitter (cuz I am a little). :)

Anyway, after that, I'll take the dogs for a hike and then I head down to the valley with 4 of the remaining 8 pizzas. I'm sharing my ridiculous pizza stash with my good friends from St. Kitts and we're going to have a pizza party and then watch Modern Family or something on their DVR. It will be a relaxing night.

Tomorrow is another NO GYM day as I will be in the valley all day shopping and hopefully meeting with my sister and BIL and niece for lunch.

I got my tix to Florida, so there is public bathing suit wearing time in 30 days (I leave March 9, so less than 30!). So I'm committed to shaping up the abdomen and arse area between now and then.

Gym on Sunday. 120 minutes of anything.

Hold me to it, ok?

I'm a master of excuses lately :)

oh no, Rene - that sounds horrible! Good for you for getting your run in.

I'm just doing hiking right now. I am having the worse TOM ever - absolutely zero energy - and I'm just not interested in running right now. I know it will pass, but that's how this week has been. But hiking with the dogs has been fun. It's been really nice weather for it, and they love it, too. :)

I don't make the polenta - I buy it in a pre-packaged tube at Whole Foods. It's organic, and I got the recipe from the company's website (quinoa.net). Really good!

Today my 9 pizzas came from Chicago...there are 8 left. :)

Crappy day today. My 10 year old came in our room at 4 am and said, "I'm going to throw up." It's been all down hill since then. Yep, 13 times, folks. She's been counting each one today. I spent the day in total paranoia, wearing a face mask and latex gloves most of the day, hoping that I don't get sick. So, in between running up and downstairs to check on her and help her out, I've been eating. DIdn't take one photo today either! I would remember of course the second I was done with my food. :( So bummed. She hasn't thrown up in the last 2:45 so I'm praying she's done with that phase. The other bummer is she has a big gymnastics meet tomorrow night. I think I'm going to have her stay home tomorrow again from school and rest (since technically she's not supposed to go back to school until 24 hours after vomiting) and if she is fine tomorrow, let her compete, though she's going to be really weak, I'm sure. UGH.

I was supposed to run 5 miles today, but waited until hubby got home so he could be with her. Got in my 5, 1st at a 9:13 warm-up, next 3 at 8:02, 7:39, 7:49 (I was supposed to go at a 7:57 pace for those three), and 5th for my cooldown, a 9:38. Glad I got my run in at least. My achilles is a little tight right now just sitting here though.

Maureen, love your food photos! I want to learn how to make polenta! I'm soooooo not a cook. I seriously need lessons. LOL!

Hey, Chica-chicas!

HOpe you guys had a good day! Ashley, hope your speed work went well.

I got to the gym later than I had wanted (because I was on the computer HERE typing about RUNNING when I should have been actually running instead! That's the worst when that happens!) ANyway, ran in, jumped on the mill and ran .65 before my class was to begin. Taught pump, then got back on the mill for 2.5 miles more. I figured since I had 5 miles on the plan for today, the 3 easy last night coupled with the 2.5 would equal it out. I feel good today. Knock on wood, but achilles is not talking right now, nor is my knee which was tweaking a little earlier this week. Yay!

Tomorrow is my day off from classes so I'll get to go outside and do my 5 miles, 3 of which are speed work at right under 8:00 pace. So funny Smart Coach has it at 7:57.

Maureen, I did get all my food photographed, but now I don't know what to do about posting them. HAHA. I've got them on my iphone so if this was facebook, I could just upload them that way. I guess I need to upload them first to my computer and then to a blog? I'm totally tech challenged. Badly. :(

Ashley, my breakfast was almost the same as yours! I had a 3 egg white omelet cooked in PAM with mushrooms, onion (also cooked in PAM) and wilted spinach in the middle. I had put the garlic out, but skipped it in the end because I was running out of time. :) I season with Mrs. Dash and Pepper and topped with some chopped avocado. YUMMY! I like the idea of baking it though!

I have stayed away from the evil Goldfish crackers today which was my enemy yesterday. I agree- I would love to start some sort of postings where we post our food to keep us accountable. Today there were a few times I went to grab something, but in my head I thought,"Ugh, I'd have to take a picture of it. LOL! So funny that it actually worked!!!! Doubt that will work for long though. HAHA. Can we maybe start a thread right here on this team page that is devoted just to our daily food log for anyone that "wants to play"?

Hi Chicas (Love the new nickname, R)!

Renee, thanks for all the info. It wasn't too much at all! I truly wanted to know, and now I do! I overslept again today, so by now you've either run or not run. What did you do? My thing with taper is that it's the hardest part of training - letting the body recover...or maybe *believing* the body needs to recover is a more apt way of looking at it.

Dash - great workout plan. You sound like you are just on fire. It's so good to hear this from you again!!

Photographing food! Love.

How about a blog for us that makes us accountable? We don't have to post every meal up there because more things to do (and spending more or our time than necessary online) is a bad idea, but accountability ALWAYS works for me. So what if we had a blog - or even used the crappy photo function on SP on the team or on our pages - to post a few meal pics a week?

With recipes?

Just a thought.

Last night I had a really fattening meal that was awesome. It's on my FB pg with the recipe. Renee, are we FB friends?

Not sure about the pool yet. My rotator cuff is so messed up, so I haven't been able to swim since before Thanksgiving. It seems like it's getting worse actually, probably from all the shoveling. Need to do some more now....

ooh so much good info on all those programs! I have done Body Pump and Body Attack before - loved both for the different benefits they each give. I'm going to see how it balances with what this boot camp is like and see if it makes sense to balance the other days with one or the other and get back into it. My gym has both those plus the Body Combat and there has been some new programs added since I renewed my membership recently from when I had had it before I left on my trip this past summer.

That is a great idea - photographing every meal today Renee. Are you going to post a blog? I'm always curious what other people eat! I made this great egg white thing this morning. SO fast and easy. I mixed about 250 calories worth of egg whites, a 1/4 cup shredded mozzarella and 6 ounces of diced green and red peppers, mushrooms, garlic, parsley and celery in a tsp of olive oil so it wouldn't stick on the pan and poured it into a baking dish, baked at 350 for 20 min while I showered and got ready. Took it to work and cut it in half - about 200 calories for the half and it was sooo flavorful and filling. Shared the other half with my coworkers!

I hear ya on that. Balance is where it's at, for sure. I think for me too, mentality wise, any time I try to restrict myself too severely, it blows up in my face. Gotta learn to live with it in a way that's healthy for me.

I'm aiming for a speed workout tonight. Going to spend 55 min on the indoor track and alternate between sprinting the long parts, jogging the corners or speeding it up for a lap around then slowing down. Just going to approach it fartlek style but I'll take my heart rate monitor and try to get my heart rate to average 80% - 85% of my max ... 156-165 bpm.

then i'll do a cool down walk on the treadmill for 20 min or so and read a magazine as a reward and to just feel like i'm keeping my legs warm while the lactic acid dissipates lol.

I'm thinking about signing up for this boot camp at my gym. It seems like a great deal to me. It's 6 weeks - Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays an hour each... so three hours a week of small group workout with a well known and successful fitness trainer at my gym. I made some small adjustments to my schedule and it will work perfectly. It costs $159 for 18 workouts... pretty sweet deal I'd say. That's like $8.83 per class. It also starts the Tuesday after I graduate my MA so I dont have to worry about missing any weekend classes. I think it will give my fitness engine a jump start.

Good morning, Chicas! (HAHA- my new nickname for the chicago marathoners! Probably old hat, but still thought it was funny)

Late yesterday evening a friend of mine posted on FB that our local running store was having a group run at 6:30, a raffle, and a rep from Brooks would be there with stuff to try out, and free beer at the end! I read this at about 5:45, still had on my workout clothes from the morning (I know, really yucky, but I'd not had time to shower after), hubby was already on his way home from work, daughter was at her 3 hour gymnastics' practice and 12.5 yr old son was working on his homework. Called hubby and told him about it, said we should go (we keep saying we need to branch out and meet new people), and somehow it all worked out and we went. There were 104 people who signed the sheet- that's the most they've ever had for a group run. This store just went in at our AWESOME town center about 4 months ago and we're all so excited because we had nothing like it in our town.

ANyway, they were doing 3 different distances- 1, 3, and 5 miles last night. I'm in taper-mode and even though I wasn't planning on running yesterday, thought it would be a good chance to run with my husband who is just really getting into the running. It was a lot of fun. We did the 3 miles at a really nice, comfy pace. My husband had already had a good, hard run on his lunch break that day, and I had had my 2 hours of classes, but it was nice and cool, a slower pace and flat for the most part, so it felt good. I just am trying to figure out if I need to adapt my running schedule this week because of it. I had 24 miles planned this week, 31 last week, and now I'm wondering if I should skip my 5 miler on the treadmill this morning before my pump class. I might just do a 1-2 mile warm-up and keep the rest of my week planned the same. This is the time period where I go all paranoid and hypochondriac before the race! HAHAHA. I can't believe we leave a week from tomorrow for Myrtle Beach EEEK!!!!

Maureen, haha- you're going to get more info than you asked for, here's my reply to your question about Body Jam. Scroll forward if you're not interested! :)

Les Mills Body Jam was launched in the US about 7 years ago. I started teaching it the second it came over to the states because I had originally started teaching Les Mills classes 10 years ago when i learned that a dance program was going to come out "any time". That was three years earlier- so in the meantime I went through certification in Les Mills Body Step, then RPM (spinning), then Bodypump (weights), all while still waiting for the dance program to be released HAHA. Guess it's a good thing I went through the other certifications first because I don't know if I ever would have if the dance program had come out earlier. Anyway, I didn't hear about Zumba until about a couple of years later and then a few years after that, our club took on zumba, too. The way I usually describe the difference between the two classes is Zumba is more like a latin dance party with some other styles thrown in along the way- easier moves to follow, less instruction by the instructor (members do more "follow the leader" approach) and a good program for all levels of dance and fitness. BodyJam has more of a dance school feel- more instruction, more choreography, and generally can be taken to a higher level of cardio intensity. Some of my Jammers take zumba, but not as many of the zumba gals cross to Jam.

Then we have a third dance program called Sh'bam, also put out by Les Mills just this past year- it was to parallel zumba more- easier choreography, shorter routines (each song track has its own mini routine like in zumba), and not as tricky to pick-up for the non-dancers. I launched the program at our gym along with 4 other Jam instructors last summer, but as of January, I decided to give that class up- my heart just wasn't with it as much as Jam, and my regular Jammers weren't crossing over to Sh'bam- they didn't feel it was challenging them enough. Anyway, I love any program that involves dance. Not knocking zumba in any way. I in fact thought about certifying in zumba because what's nice is you can go teach it ANYWHERE- not even just in clubs. THe Les Mills classes can only be taught in gyms that pay the licensing fees so I am limited to teaching these classes only in those clubs. Granted, we have 4 clubs all within twenty minutes that have all the Les Mills classes, and luckily my two clubs are both within a 10 min drive of my house. There, that's the long answer. HAHA. If things change in the future, I will probably get zumba certified so I can teach anywhere but for now I love my class load- it works out perfectly with my kids' schedule and my running schedule for the most part.

Cross fit just opened a facility this month, also in our town park! My high school best friend owns a facility in Florida. We lost touch after college and in the past year just reconnected through Facebook. She has been a personal trainer for about 20 years and seriously knows her $%^*. Now, I know very little about cross fit, so I can't say much, but I do know that each facility has flexibility in how they run the program. My friend has built an entire wooden, massive outdoor obstacle course outside the facility and it seems her workouts are run like a bootcamp. THis is all based on looking at her photos. I know nothing about the principles behind the program, or their mantras, but the workouts at least from the photos look kick a$$. Another high school friend of mine is a cross fit instructor in Denver, CO. WE also had lost touch after college and reconnected again a few years back through FB (love FB for this reason!). He has to have lost 100 pounds since I had last seen him and he attributes most of it to cross fit.

Groupon just ran a special about a month ago for this new cross fit here- a super amazing deal that got some of my friends/ gym members signing up to try it out. Well, my good friend went once, and said she will not be returning. I don't know if it is because they had so many people show up for that class due to the groupon- but she said there were about 30 people there and one trainer. AHHHHHHH!!!!! From what she described it was an accident waiting to happen with people performing exercises for the first time with no supervision due to the sheer number of takers that day. I do need to educate myself on the program though, so that when gym clients ask about it, I can give an educated answer.

Maureen, I'm sorry about the pool class. I know that was weighing on your mind for a while. It sounds like it was meant to happen- at least now you won't have to deal with the negativity that it was creating. Are you going to bite the bullet and buy a membership until you move? I know that it had a pricey monthly tag on it. :(

Gained 3 pounds this past week from eating everything in sight. Don't know what's been with me - and it's not the taper since nothing has really changed that much yet. What stinks is next week I'll be carbo loading for the marathon and I didn't want to go into that week with already up on the scale. So today I am vowing to photograph EVERYTHING I eat. At least I can be good for the next 5-6 days.

I wrote WAY too much, sorry. Feeling hyper right now! :)

I have a grave distrust of anyone who tries to keep me from my carbs. Too much of anything is bad, but we need carbs, we need fat, and we protein. As soon as someone says I should drastically limit my intake of one, I'm like, uh-huh.

i do like the aspect of variety in workouts though. lot of weight lifting and carb avoidance though it seems.

wow... i'd say that's pretty dogmatic. interesting stuff. i see what you're saying about it being somewhat scary. i felt strangely like i was in church reading that for some reason. "sickness, wellness and health" ?

Your job at the sledding hill sounds hysterical - trying to keep people from going over an embankment. Wow!

I recently read something about crossfit b/c I've been hearing all about it and I have a few friends who are really into it. I found some online manifesto on the *main* crossfit page, and truthfully? It freaked me out.

There are all these pillars that define fitness, and since I had like 0 of them, but I feel fit in my own way, I decided it wasn't for me. Let me find the link....

does anyone have any experience with crossfit? i'm not looking to get into it at this time, but just in curiosity. some friends do it in virginia and rhode island and it seems like its a popular thing right now. anyone know anything about it?

that sucks about the swim class schedule gogo!!! maybe members will complain since it sounds like your class was the most beneficial to people actually wanting a workout and they will realize the stupidity of their decision.

i got in a half mile run today - just to be able to stay on course and say i got something in. i did a stair stepper workout at the gym and my legs are sore from working at the sledding hill yesterday and doing a lot of squats holding people's tubes and launching them and then when the coworkers and i switched, a lot of throwing my body around trying to catch people before they slid over this embankment. lots of adults wiping me out lol. so i did the stair stepper today to sweat and then did four laps on the indoor track = .5 mile. not much but i'm taking this week getting back into a routine and just easing in to gain some momentum.

feeling good. :-)

Renee, is Body Jam at all similar to Zumba? Are they a variation on the same theme? I know that they are put out by different companies, but are the workouts comparable? Sounds like ou had some great workouts!

It was another snow shoveling day here... I was stranded again by 4 measley inches. Doesn't sound like much, but with all the other snow that we've had and the steepness of my driveway, I can't get out with either car. Boo. Lots of school work today, too, so I've shoveled half, and will shovel the rest tomorrow morning for a Wed afternoon escape.

In other news, I was removed from the pool class teaching schedule. :( I didn't want to work there anymore because of that ex-friend lady, and I tried switching days to avoid that most unpleasant woman, but the other woman (who is friends with Ms. Unpleasant) wouldn't switch days with me for the deep water aerobics class, so now those two will alternate my Wednesdays, and I have no days of teaching anymore. The boss said I could stay on as a cashier, but I was only doing the cashiering part before the teaching to make the 30 min drive each way worth while, so I said no thanks, and I quit. Sort of sad, but to be expected, and I'm only here for a couple more months anyway.

No biggie.

Ok, vent over. Thanks for listening. Return to your regularly scheduled programming.

Yesterday was my 1 hour step class and 6 miles on the treadmill. Today was teaching my 1 hour Bodypump class and then 1 hour Body Jam class ( a cardio dance class that incorporates all kinds of dance- hip hop, latin, jazz, tribal, etc- My absolute most FAVORITE class! :) )

good for you for finding an alternative instead of just canning the workout all together! that's the right spirit!

just makes me feel courageous, i don't know. because historically sports were about men and i already don't feel like a typical athlete so i just feel good for being there, even if it's maybe a little intimidating at times.

Good job getting up and out the door, Dash! Why do you think being the only female makes such a difference? It's an interesting thing to think about!

I have not done as well as you today so far... TOM came last night, and I stayed in bed for an extra hour today in the fetal position, despite fervent pleas from the dogs to get my butt moving.

I'm pretty crampy, but I'm up now, gave the dogs a great walk, I'm drinking tea, and hard at work. I did a little yoga after the dog walk, before working. My calendar says I'm scheduled for a 60 minute bike ride at the gym, but that's not going to happen. I hate going to the gym on Day 1. I hate going anywhere, and I am working from my "bed office" today. I will sub the gym XT with a nice hike for the dogs. It's cold here.... brrrr... but at least it's not snowing again yet.

got my run in this morning! Just 1.5 miles to start but momentum has to start somewhere, right?. Got up at 4:30AM to get to the indoor track to do it too, since temps are at subzero here! I feel good about it the workout - and because I was the only female on the track at that hour with five other guys!

I'm still this brilliant thread idea from the SP Marathoner team. Check in here to report your day's running activity, or if you did XT, strength training, or rested, check in, too.

Here's where we go to stay accountable.
