Your race report is AWESOME, Renee. I love that you had time to high-five Elvis and still PR-d by plenty! :)

What is your next goal now. Sub 3:30? I'm fascinated by people's time goals. I'd love to be someone who could actually set them and meet them one day.

For now, my goals are "to be walking like a normal person with 48 hours" (check), and "to have fun" (DOUBLE CHECK).

LOL

Checking in post race. How did everyone fare? I LOVE CHICAGO! I posted a race report on my blog at spark. I couldn't believe how well organized this race was. I think that they would be hard to beat in that category. I was able to PR which made me happy and had a blast on the great route.

II'd love to meet for a beer after the race. It's going to be a long slog for me bc of injuries. I'm thinking I'll be hobbling in for my free beer at the finish line at 1:30..... and then straight to the massage tents. :)

My bib # is 38762. :)

Cheers, gang!

The expo was great today. Heading in again tomorrow to do a little shopping.... :)

Hey maureen

sorry it's taken me a long time. Yeah I'm actually studying Nutrition. right now I'm just working on my pre-reqs but hopefully I'll be out of doing them quickly. I'm still deciding if I want to go for my masters or Ph.D but I figure I have at least 2 or 3 semesters before I have to figure that out so! yeah.

Hi, Guys!

Maureen, your post just reminded me to ice my achilles right now. UGH. IT hurt more Sunday and Monday than it has in over a month, I'm sure due to my 22 miles on Th, 10 on Sat, and 9 with speed on Sunday. Hoping that it goes away through the taper. I'm getting nervous! Starting to fret over clothes, plans for the weekend, where to eat, etc. This is just my normal self though. LOL!

Today was 5 easy miles in the beautiful cooler weather (started at 58degrees) then I went and taught Bodypump.

Tomorrow is either my long run 15 miles, or speedwork. Which ever I don't do, I will do on Saturday, but if I save my long run for Sat, I will only do 13 then.

Hi everyone! So excited to begin tapering. My AT is feeling fine (just a little sore after the long runs). I'm really starting to get excited for the big day! The weather in Chi has been great, so hopefully that lasts another 3 weeks.

Hope you all enjoy your lighter weeks!

WOOHOO TAPER TIME!

I ran the Equinox Marathon on Saturday for my last training run, but last week's mileage was low due to heavy polar bear activity. I hurt my IT band during the marathon, so I need to really take it easy and find some good XT activities that won't aggravate it, but that will keep my fitness up for the next few weeks.

Kristen, how is your AT? Mine did fine on the long run, so I'm not too worried about that, but I am continuing ice and heat with several parts of my body these days - haha!

I'm starting to watch Chicago weather and think about what I'm going to wear....

TAPER TIME!

Finished the week off with 53 miles, highest mileage for a week to date.

Got in a 22 miler with the last 7.5 at marathon pace this past Thursday. Yesterday did an easy run/recovery of 10 miles and today hit the local HS track and did Yasso 800s x 9 for a total of 8 miles.

I can't believe it is almost here!

Hi, Gang,

Quick fly by- finished the week with 38 miles- step back week for me because of my 50 the week before and the hopeful 50 this week.

Was in a 10k this weekend and ended up placing first overall female and 7th overall male and female. Ironically, my time was not even close to what I was going for- was aiming for at least a 7:30 avg pace as part of my speed training, but ended up with a 7:43 pace with a giant fade from beginning to end. Finished the last two miles at goal marathon pace which was all I could manage at that point. Not good. Oh well, was really fun to win a race- first time for that!

We've got cool weather here in the ATL this morning- too bad this is my non-run day! On the docket for today are my two classes to teach- Pump and Jam (cardio dance). Son is supposed to run 3 miles tonight, but he's going to have a ton of homework tonight, so not sure we'll actually get out for it.

What's up with everyone else?

Hi everyone,

Glad you are all doing well - and I feel bad for your not ideal conditions Maureen!

I had a great 19 miles last Saturday with perfect weather. It's finally cooling down here in Chicago, so hopefully that's a good sign for race day.

This week has been 5,8,5 and 12 tomorrow morning. Still icing the achilles, but it's not getting any worse. Hope you guys have a great weekend!

Hi, Kristen, Maureen, and Adam,

What's new for everyone?

Let's see, for me since I last posted here:

Tues- taught pump, and a cardio dance class
Wed- 7 miles
Today- 16 miles- first 10 at 9:06 avg pace, last 6 at 8:06 avg pace. First 10 miles felt great, so much better than last week. Last 6 miles were definitely challenging to hold my pace through the last few miles, but I did it. My heart rate was def higher than I wanted it for the last 3 miles. Temp was much better today than last week's long run.
Tomorrow- teach cardio dance, and take a Flow class (combo of yoga, tai chi, and pilates)
Sat- 10k race, (hubby and son are doing the 5k)

Maureen, when I lived in Boston, I remember doing runs in the sleet and it was MISERABLE!!!!! I'm thinking I'll take the heat I've been training in over the nasty, wet snow runs any day! :)

Adam, what are you studying?

I'm a college professor, so I am a little bit stressed about how this fits into the semester. I'm teaching a full load, and I tried to write my syllabi so that I don't have a ton of grading the week before the marathon, but there is always grading to be done in English classes.... ahahaha

It's spitting snow/sleet/rain today, so I'm going to do my run on a TM at the gym this evening, which sucks because TMs hurt my back, but running outside in this means my feet will get soaked because it's just running in wet mushy sand, basically.

Misery awaits me either way.

Thanks for letting me vent!

Hahaha ok I just noticed that when you actually start doing real life stuff even away from running and online running forums you miss a lot of fellow runners updates. I've only posted once in the past week or so and I missed out on a whole batch of stuff. I know this is kind of weird but this is the first time in training for a marathon where I just kind of want the race to just be over so I can move on with my semester. and pay attention to my studies at least until I feel fully rejuvenated from a small break.

It sounds though like everyone's having their own drama stuff. I really like how pretty much most runners seem to be able to relate to most other runners and their issues as well. Oh and if I didn't say it before I'm Adam Everyone.

Renee, don't worry about the rough run one bit. We need the bad runs so that we can recognize the good ones!

My back is still sore, but now I'm pretty confident it is actually arthritis. When I was 23, I was in a bad car accident that really jarred my back, and the doc said from the impact I developed osteoarthritis. Well, sometimes it would bother me, but I exercises and strengthened the muscles in my core, and it's just a rare occasion - nothing like this week. However, I've never lived anywhere that is really cold and damp, and I've never run 23 miles in the cold and damp, either, so yeah, I think that's what it is.

I took the whole week off from running and I've just been doing other stuff. I'm going to go to a weight lifting class tomorrow and going on a long beach walk (pretty strenuous here with the super soft sand), and then 10 miles on Sunday. We had snow flurries today and they are expected to continue thru the weekend. It's only August! Yikes.

So glad your ankle feels better Kbarry. Keep up with the ice/heat regimen, and back off on the runs if it's talking to loudly to you. ATs can take a long to heal if you really do something major, so don't let it become major. :)

Ok, I'm in a baking frenzy. It must be the onset of winter. Yesterday I made blueberry-mango scones, and now I have cheddar-jalepeno scones in the oven (my partner's request). That's a lot of butter I'm ingesting. I'm not proud of myself, but I guess there's this part of me that says, "yeah, but you ran 23 miles on Sunday, so eat what you want for a few days!" and I'm listening to that part. As long as my skinny jeans still fit, right?

Thanks for the suggestions guys - it's been feeling better since Monday's run, so hopefully it's not turning into anything major. I'll be sure to keep icing and heating today and through the weekend.

Renee - sorry to hear your 20 miler was so tough. I totally understand how those bad runs can effect you. That's how my half marathon felt last weekend!

Maureen - hope your back is feeling better!

Have a great Labor Day weekend and hope everyone has successful runs! We've gotta keep these injuries at bay!!!

Kristen, good luck with your long run this weekend. Don't be nervous about changing your running people this weekend- I bet it will be a nice change to try something different. :) Careful with that achilles. I, too, have been suffering from an achilles issue since March from overstress. Anti-inflamatories, icing SEVERAL times a day, and stretches, stretches, stretches, but gentle. Google Achilles tendon stretches and do them until you feel it, but you don't want to overstretch it. Just take care of it now so it doesn't turn into something ugly like mine.

I did my 20 yesterday. It was HORRIBLE. I've not had a bad run like that since training for two marathons ago. I think I went into it already thinking it was going to be bad. I run by myself and that is a long time to be running, but like I said, I've done it this way many times. I felt horrible by mile 10. Got blisters on the top of my feet because my PT friend suggested I try to lace my shoes differently to keep my toes from jamming into the front (a problem I have only when I'm racing). Changed those laces at mile 12, but the damage was already done. Both knees were hurting and my AT was screaming the last 7 miles. Maureen, my lower back was hurting the last 6 miles and I was thinking of you- at that moment I rememered getting lower back ache with my long miles, but it doesn't feel like my tail bone is bruised. It feels fine today. I averaged a 9:29 mile. I was going for a faster slow pace and had wanted to get in 5-6 miles at goal marathon pace. forget that!

Try alternating ice with heat - 15 mins ice, 15 mins heat, 15 minutes ice again.

I've started doing that with my back last evening when my partner reminded me, and it seems to be working. Let me know if it works for you.

I'm focused on my back now bc while my AT is still sore, my back is in agony!

Hey Maureen - I've been icing it each night. It's weird and only hurts for the first 3 miles or so, then the pain subsides...anything else you suggest?

I can imagine that the change in terrain has something to do with the back pain. I tend to have more painful spots when I run off the pavement.

Hope it feels better as the week moves along!

Hi Kristen, my AT is bugging me, too. Are you icing yours?

What really is a problem is my lower back. It hurt so much yesterday that I stayed in bed all day and worked from there.

I don't know what I did to it - 23 miles is a lot for sure but running has never hurt my back.

Do you think this could be from running only on sand/soft gravel now?

Hope everyone is having a good week! What's on tap for you this weekend? I'm starting the holiday weekend with 19 and I'm slightly nervous. I won't have my running partner this weekend, so I'll be running with the local running club (which will be a first for me). I've also been experiencing some achilles / heel pain on the right side for the last week, so hopefully that'll subside.

Hope you're well!

Kristen

Good luck with the rain. I did my run in the rain, too, an I realized I don't have any decent rain gear for running.

I'd love any recommendations for a good running jacket to keep me dry if you have one!

Mmmmmmmmm, your soup sounds delicious, Maureen! I LOVE soup!

Yesterday I taught a one hour step class and then ran 8 miles on the treadmill with the first 7 at about a 9:05 pace and the last mile from 8-6:55. Today I taught 1 hr pump, and 1 hr cardio Jam. The rain from Hurricane Isaac has moved in and it is supposed to rain for at least the next 6 days. I've got to get in 20 miles on Thursday so I hope I can squeeze it in when it's not a monsoon!!!

Hi Renee, it's not wrong to say. It truly is a surreal and unbelievable experience, living up here!
I leave for Chicago on Sept 24 and I'm so excited!

I didn't mean to say it was my last long run, but my 2nd to last. I'll do another one of the same length at least, maybe 24 or 25 miles. We'll see how long recovery takes on this one. I want to feel good on marathon day! And the long run was outside. It was cold and blustery, but no polar bears. I posted my route on FB b/c it's sort of funny since there aren't 26 miles of roads here, so you have to do a lot of back and forth. :) Are friends on FB?

I completely agree with the choices of the 2 camps, but there has to be a 3rd option, right? I am more interested in that. I'm in camp 1 now, but last year I was in camp 2 for 365 days, I think! I want camp 3, where training takes a priority, but I am not obsessive and I make balanced choices that include my family and friends, too.

The eating thing... that was my problem in Fairbanks because of the social thing after being a hermit for so long - haaha. Now my eating is back on track, but as we all know, it takes longer to put on weight that to take it off. I'm 2 lbs up from my pre-23 mile run weight yesterday morning, but I know this is just my muscles retaining water from the big workout (when you're slow, a 23 mile run is a longer workout than when you're fast!), so I'm not flipping out or anything.

We've been eating really well, and with our big weekly CSA box, we've been doing tons of cooking. Last night after the run, we made curried carrot coconut soup. SO GOOD. I'm eating it now for lunch. I need to bake bread this week, but today is the first day of classes (online) and I'm swamped and chained to the laptop.

hi, Fraggle and Maureen!

Just caught up on your posts, Maureen. It truly i (is this wrong to say?) entertaining to read about life there. I really can't imagine. "have to make my own bread". O M G. :)

Way to go on the 23! I can't believe you were able to pull that out! Were you outside? On the treadmill? How? Why is it your last long run?

Maureen, I've got at least 6 pounds more on me right now than I did at this point in training for Myrtle Beach earlier this year. i KNOW it is slowing me down- I know this, but yet I still continue putting all the carbs in my body. I don't get it, because for someone who thinks about it as much as I do, why don't I have the self control in the moment the food goes into the mouth? Very frustrating for me.

Fraggle, I get it with life getting in the way. UGH. It's either live your life normally and let the training suffer some or get totally obsessive with the training and let your real life suffer- unfortunately I've been living out of the second camp mentality lately. I feel like I've been nothing but consumed with it all.

I finished up last week with 43 miles of running and 6 hours of gym classes. That's the most miles to date this training cycle- that includes runs of 6.2, 6.3, 16.25, 8, and 6.25. The 8 were done on the high school track with 7 x 800m, with 400m jogs in between- paces between 6:52- 6:29. All the rest of the runs were done between 9:00-9:30 avg pace.

Today I taught my 1 hour step class, rested for 45 min, then ran 8 miles on the TM. I've got to get my long run of 20 miles in this Thursday because we are supposedly going to the beach in FL for Labor Day weekend. HOWEVER, tropical storm Isaac is rearing his ugly head and it's supposed to be touching down in the next few days. Who knows what is going to happen. We are in north Georgia, and it is supposed to be raining for the next 5 days so I may be doing that long run in the rain. GREAT.

My AT is still letting me know it is not normal, but it doesn't feel to be getting any worse. I just hope it stays at bay. As long as everything goes as planned, I will be starting with the 3:35 pace group and see how I feel.

Hope you guys all get in good weeks of training! We're in the last 3 weeks before a basic taper!!!!!!!!

getting ready to go back to school has forced me down to only 30 to 40 miles a week right now but I'm hoping to get back in to the swing of things with in the next couple of weeks so yeah I'm totally feeling the whole i know i should be doing better in my training. I haven't even really gotten a real long run in at all.

I just did my last long run today (23 miles). It was slow, but it's done. My left AT really aches. I'm icing it now.

Feeling good over all, though. :)

Not great. There's no way for me to catch up on what I've missed at this point, so I just am preparing for a 6.5 hour day with lots of walking.

I went for a 7 mile run yesterday but only knocked out 5.5.

And it took forever.

I have no idea what is wrong with me. I've never been a fast runner, but I used to be able to run 7mph. Or at least 5mph. Now the 5.5 took me 80 minutes. And I was dripping sweat. And I'm sore today.

The only thing i can think of is that

1) I'm drastically slowing down with age (not very realistic)
2) The extra weight I'm carrying is slowing me down. (more realistic)

My ticker is wrong - I'm actually 10 lbs more than that right now. Maybe being 119 instead of 109 is what's slowing me down? More to carry?

It sure is discouraging. If I were to run Chicago at yesterday's pace, it would take me almost 6.5 hours to finish. And yesterday I thought I was going to die if I stayed on another 10 mins. I feel like I had a killer workout yesterday, but according to the SP tracker, I just was walking, not all out running, which I was.

Is it that it's on a treadmill? I'm faster on land, and I wonder if it has to do with my stride being longer on land, so maybe on the treadmill I'm so concerned about injuring myself that my stride gets very shortened, and I open it up more on land? I don't know, but I'm discouraged today.

I did 20 mins of leg weights after the run. Today, we need to walk 5 miles to town to get our CSA food (or pay a $14 cab ride for 2 people - so we want to walk into town and cab back), so that will be my XT in lieu of the gym since the gym doesn't open til 5pm and we need to be moving before then. If we get a ride and get back more quickly, I'll be able to hit the gym.

Tomorrow I run for 75 minutes again. If it's nice out, I'll do it outside, but I'm trying to support the gym bc I was the only person there for the 2 hrs I was there, and I'm worried that without people going, they are going to shut down again.

Anyway, it looks like it's going to snow a little tomorrow, so the gym will be a more comfortable option for me.

How are you all doing?

Sounds like a great workout day, Renee!

The gym was a bust last night. We went there at 5 with our stuff in tow, but they weren't open yet, and they said, "Maybe tomorrow." So I'll try again today. They let us go inside and look around, and there are 2 treadmills, one ellipitical, a 1/2 basketball court open, 1 bike, some free weights, and a handful of nautilus machines (all crammed into the other 1/2 court). No showers, but a toilet, sink, and 3 lockers. Also, a foozeball and pool table. Random. It's free, though.

The problem was that the weather had changed last evening, and it was too gusty to go for a run at that point. Like SERIOUSLY gusty and we're right on the beach and it was like a sandstorm. Sucks. We put our boots on and heavy jackets and sunglasses (to protect our eyes from the sand) and took the dogs on long beach walk on the beach instead (sounds fun but it's actually a workout bc the sand is so soft so it's really hard to walk on - it's only packed at the water's edge, and in the Arctic Ocean, you don't walk at the water's edge bc it's freezing cold and it's too easy to get hypothermia here if your feet get wet. On the way back, we had to move inland bc of the wind and sand. The dogs were miserable, poor things.

For dinner, we made a yummy curried summer squash soup using all the squash from this week's food delivery, and I added apple and cinnamon and cayenne and lots of curry. Delicious. I can't remember if I'll get more squash this week from my CSA or not, but it was soooo good. We had the leftovers for lunch today w/ tuna salad sandwiches on the last of the gluten-free bread I brought up. Now if we want bread, I have to bake it. :)

We'll see how today goes. If the gym is still closed at 5pm, the weather is ok, so we'll be able to do a longer beach walk, but my AT is still sore, so I'm not going to run outside even if it's closed. My medicine ball and therabands came in the mail today (I mailed it up from Fairbanks), so I'm happy to have those, but I really want to get on the bike and elliptical and get my heart pumping. There is a pool in town at the hs, but it doesn't open to the public until school starts (school in villages start at different times because of the hunting season and kids are expected to help their parents), and I have no clue when that will be, and there is no internet presence, and I don't know very many people yet, and the ones I've met have never gone to the high school pool or haven't been for years and don't know the hours, and the only way to find out is to go and ask someone in person, but we don't have a car yet and we haven't heard of one for sale (no Craigslist for up here either), and it's not like we can just "go" anywhere. R is not allowed to borrow a car from work for personal stuff, and a RT cab ride is $24, even though it's only about 10 miles RT, bc gas is so friggin expensive up here. They gym that I'm going to try again at 5 is right by where we live - a 5 min walk - so it's not a huge hassle when it's closed (aside from missing a workout).

Yes, the shopping thing is definitely difficult. To give you a better idea of what I'm looking at, between yesterday and today I've ordered the following:

1) a bamboo dish rack that I'm mailing to my parents to send up bc I ordered it last week and now Amazon has declared it "undeliverable" to Barrow for some reason, and they've refunded my order.
2) A broom. Brooms here go for $34 (cheapest price I've seen)
3) Organic valley milk (asceptic so it can be on shelf). 12 1/2 gallon cartons
4) a set of king sized sheets that will hopefully fit the 2 twin sized beds we have shoved together to make a bed
5) clif bars
6) Clif shot bloks
7) a cutting board
8) Qtips
9) a dust pan
10) clorox toilet wand
11) bath mat
12) a case of Muir Glen organic diced tomatoes
13) case of almond milk
14) Greenies for the dogs
15) canned dog food
16) a bunch of supplements from Vitacost.

It's crazy. I have a list on the dry erase board on the fridge called AMAZON, and I just write stuff down when I realize we need to put in an order. Prime member my foot - it takes a minimum of 2 weeks for anything to get to me. And then we have to arrange a ride to the PO... and the po is only open M-F from 9-10 and then again from 1-3 to pic up packages. NO JOKE.

It's crazy here. :)

Oh, and the race shirt, Maureen- the reason it is the best race shirt ever is I actually will wear it! IT is a soft, fitted t-shirt (love when they have both women's and men's fits at the races), in a dark, almost black, heather grey, with a big lime green alien head on it. I'll have to take a photo of it, the medal, and the trophy. The medal and trophy are a hoot!

Congrats on your 18 miler, Kristen and good luck this weekend at your race! That's an exciting milestone goal and I'm rooting for you!!!! Can't wait to hear the details.

Maureen, I guess the positive thing about the gym hours is it will force you into a set schedule with it. Sometimes if I only have a small window to get something done, I do much better with getting it done! LOL I really cannot imagine having to order everything I need. We really don't appreciate the ease/luxury of just running down and getting what we need at the corner store, do we?

Yesterday I taught a brutal hour step/plyo class and then did a 6.2 mile recovery run on the treadmill. I was feeling pretty beat up by the end. My feet were killing me! Today I taught 1 hour each of Pump and Body Jam . My husband and 13 year old son are going for a 2 mile run in a bit. I was supposed to go but forgot and showered. Feeling lazy so hubby is taking him, even though he already got in his 3 mile run at lunch today. HAHA- I told him I did more than he did today so he's got to go. We have to drive to a flat running route, hence the need for us to go with him.

Alright guys, Chicago is right around the corner! Keep on happy training! :)

Way to go on your 1/2, Renee! I'd love to see a pic of the tshirt. Can you post one somewhere and let me know?

I'm going to do a little work this morning, and then run for 30 minutes on the football field and see how my AT is feeling. The tribal college gym re-opens today for the fall semester, and the hours are 5pm-9pm. I know. How $hitty is that? But I plan on being there at 5 and then dinner at 8.

I'm not thrilled about eating so late, but I've got to work with what's available.

Rough morning w R as we are having to get back into the habit of co-habitating. Haha - it's not as easy as one would think as we've both been doing things our own way for the past 3 yrs. We walked the dogs on the beach for a 45 mins and then she stormed off to work bc she doesn't like a big walk in the a.m, but rather wants to do it over lunch, and I pushed hard for the morning walk, so she was pissy. It's so stupid, really. It's more about our strong wills than anything else, I think.

I made my morning smoothie and I'm doing a little ordering on Amazon before I start my work day (I need a broom, I need some push pins, I need a hammer, I want some pomegranate juice from Knudsens or Santa Cruz, I need more wheat germ, I need a different hydration system for running so I'm checking out the Nathan Trek vs Velocity vs Triangle, etc). I really hate shopping, but bc mail to this faraway place takes so long, I need to take the time to order stuff when I think of it since I can't get anything I want up here, and the stuff that is up here is so incredibly expensive.

Kristen, hope you had a good 18 this weekend!

Maureen, I totally get it with the achilles. It is such a frustration for me. It's so much worse on hills, too. It sounds like you have a plan- try it again next weekend. You did the right thing to cut the run short. Ice, ice, ice! In fact I'm going to ice mine again when I finish typing this.

I had my half marathon last night. It was called Area 13.1 Alien Invasion. Cool concept, unfortunately not cool weather. Very humid because it rained that morning and then had a very light rain while many were still on the course at the end. I didn't PR, but I did win Overall Master's Female which I was super excited about! There were 2,100 runners and I came in 7th overall female. Got a 1:42:55 and avg pace 7:51. I was hoping for a 1:41:00, but between the humidity, and the talking achilles, I'll take it. I got a $100 gift card to the local vitamin shop and a funny alien head trophy. Oh, and the best race shirt ever. :) Took today totally off and propped up my feet! Tomorrow I teach a high impact/plyo step class and will do a short recovery run on the treadmill.

Hope you guys had good weekends!

I went out for an 18 miler today and at mile 9, called it quits as my left AT was hurting badly, and walked the last mile home for a total fo 10.

I'm bummed and discouraged. So the new plan now is to try 18-19 next Sunday, then a 10 miler the following next 2 Sundays, then a 22 miler, and then a taper, with my regular timed runs during the week.

I don't know what else to do. Between the move and now being in Barrow and running on sand (which is why, I'm sure, my AT is needing ice now), this just hasn't been the greatest training season for me once I left CO on May 15. Oh well.

I'll try again next year!

Gogoshire - I can't imagine the thought of polar bears....at least that won't be an obstacle in Chicago :) Good luck on your half this weekend Ebunny!

My 17 went great last weekend - I'm thankful the temps are down in the 70s. Had a sluggish 8 miler last night but I'm gearing up for 18 this weekend.

Good luck everyone - stay strong!!

Great job on the long run, Renee! I went out for 18 and stopped after 10 as my AT was bugging me. I'm gearing up for a 2 mile tempo run this evening. With the sun not setting til midnight (and then rising again shortly after), I will probably do this at 9pm or so!

Hi, KBarry and Maureen!

Glad to see you guys posting! Not just me anymore lol!

Maureen, that's just plain crazy with the polar bears. WEll, I guess it will make for alert runs, right? HAHAHAHAA Hope you are starting to settle in now in your new home.

Kbarry, good luck on your 17 this weekend! You are going to feel so accomplished at the end!!!!

This past weekend I did 18.5. Felt great until the last 2.5. Yuck. Avg pace was 9:17 I think. I ran 8 on the treamill Monday after step class. Tuesday was Pump class, then Jam, and today was pump class then a tempo run on the TM- 1 mile warm, 1 mile cool and in between 5 miles between 8-7:24 pace. It was tough. That's my last run before my half this Saturday evening. I'm taking tomorrow off entirely and then Friday I'm teaching a cardio class in the AM, but nothing else.

Can't wait to get these posts going strong again!

Hi Gang, I've been traveling all week on the Kenai Peninsula. I did a 15 miler - my longest training run so far for this marathon, and it put things in perspective for me..mainly, how this move has EFFED me up and I'm not going to be ready on Oct 7. It's just a fact.

I drove 14 hours from Homer to Fairbanks on Wednesday, and yesterday I had been running around like a crazy person getting ready for today's flight. Still lots to do. I get into Barrow tonight at 7:30 - new home that I've never seen, my partner is not there, and I know no one.

And there are polar bears.

I talked to the gun guy at the local store in Fbx yesterday about getting a gun to run with bc of polar bears, and he said, "Just make sure to save a bullet for yourself," which FREAKED me out (as in be prepared to off yourself if you are attacked bc it's a horrific death, being eaten alive).

I have an 18 mile run on Sun or Mon, and I don't have a running group yet (no internet presence), so not sure how this is going down.

Hi all - sorry I've been completely MIA from spark the whole first half of training. I hope it's going well for everyone. Sunday I completed my longest run to date - 15 miles. I've been following Hal Higdon's novice 2 (with a few weekend modifications). Excited but completely nervous for next weekend's 17!! Glad to see you're doing so well Ebunny! Today was rest day. Super tight hamstrings after the long run yesterday. I definitely need to do some good stretching right now. Tomorrow is a step class and 4-6 easy miles on treadmill.

Hi, Maureen! I have never subscribed to a team thread before like a dummy, so I just did. That would be helpful, huh? :)

Today I did my longest long run to date in this training cycle- 19 miles. I had an average pace of 9:28. Great conditions for me today- overcast, with a light drizzle of rain off and on. PErfect. First 15 miles felt good, last 4 miles were evil. :)

Going to bite the bullet and buy the plane tickets for the family today. i'd been waiting for this long run to see how the achilles felt. It spasmed once around mile 10 when I went by accident off the road on an uphill climb, and it definitely tweaked. Other than that it felt fine. Chicago is 9 weeks from tomorrow! Wow, that came really, really fast.

I am sick again today, and my schedule for tomorrow says 16 miles.

Based on how I feel now (very stuffed head, bad cough, light-headed, achey), I don't see this happening.

However, I'm really afraid about skipping another long run (I skipped the 14 miler).

I'm trying to be chill about it, doing what's best for my body and all, but I'll admit to feeling ill-prepared at this point for Oct 7.

How is everyone else doing?

Renee, thanks for telling me to come back! I need a place to hold myself accountable for this marathon. I wasn't even getting the SP messages, and last time I looked here (in beginning of month), no one had posted in a while, so I disappeared, too.

Tonight I'll send out a group missive inviting people back. Probably everyone is unsubbed.

Ok, going to leave the house now bc I just spent 20 mins writing a post on the marathon team, and I've got no more energy for being on the computer now, but I'm back, and I'll start posting here, too, so you aren't all alone!

Just me, myself, and I here. LOL!

Last Saturday's long run was 13.2 miles, and my week's total mileage was 31. This past Saturday's long run was 16 miles. Tough run. 87% humidity , but at least it was totally overcast and shaded. Avg pace was 9:38, but it felt really SLOW and SLUGGISH. Total miles last week was 36 even. This current week is a step back week which I'm feeling is a good idea. I have a half marathon on the docket for Aug 13 and still tentatively planning on Chicago, but still haven't bought my plane tickets.

I do hope people start posting on here again!!!

Realized not just me, but we ALL fell off the face of the planet! I'm back. Last time I posted I'd just finished the GA half marathon in Atlanta- felt great. Six days later, I decided to do a local 5k, and got a new PR. Felt good. THe next day, I went out for a 13 mile long run. It all caught up with me and that was the beginning of a nasty achilles tendonitis issue. :( Stopped running for 4 weeks completely to try to let it heal. Came back into it- still there. Took another 3 weeks off late May/early June. It's still there, but better. Resumed my training, not where I wanted to be at this point for Chicago, but hey, I'm running again so I can't be too bummed about it. I did the ATL Peachtree Roadrace on July 4th and told myself I would not let my pace get under an 8:30 to protect my achilles. Well, adrenaline and my A corral start placement and all the jack rabbits starting off got the best of me. I ran it in avg pace of 7:50, at 49:12. Not bad for achilles problem, barely any running, and a 10 pound gain due to injury and our 3 week trip to Europe. :) Did 10.5 this past Saturday and it felt like a huge milestone for me. Achilles aches some but not nearly as bad as it was in the thick of the injury. I'll have to take it one week at a time.  Goal for long run this coming weekend will be around 12 miles. I ran 4.25 miles today on the treadmill after my 1 hour step class.

Anyone out there lurking? What's everyone's stories? The heat alone here in the south has really added to the sluggishness and demotivation!!! Peachtree helped me get jumpstarted again! :0

Hey, Fraggle, I'm in the Atlanta area. Temps have been in the 80s in the afternoons- CRAZY! I ran the GA half marathon this weekend in Atlanta. 9,000+ half runners and 1800+ full. Temps got in the mid 80s by midday and it was a brutal day on the course for the full runners. I'm SOOOO glad I chose not to sign up for the full! LOL! It was sunny towards the end of my race, but still in the 60s so that was great for me. I ran it in 1:41:29- a new PR for me by 15.5 minutes! I hate hills, but so glad I ran them for the 2 weeks that I did to give my legs some prep before this course. FInished 94th out of 5,113 females, and 9th out of 885 for my age group! :) Super happy with my run.

Signed up for another hilly half marathon on April 22nd. Still debating doing the Flying Pig marathon May 6th in Cincinnati. I don't want to go into a marathon not fully trained and since my Myrtle Beach Marathon Feb 18, I've just trained for this past weekend's half so longest run since Feb 18 was the 13.1 Sunday. Also, not sure if I want to drop the cash for flight, hotel, travel expenses for May 6th since I'm going on vaca with the family next week for spring break and then a Europe summer vacation late May, first half of June. Decisions to make!!

When is your 50k, Fraggle?

Where is everyone else???? :(

Hi, Everyone! Just checking in- it's been quiet on here! Fraggle, not sure when I'm going to start my actual plan for Chicago. Still trying to figure out what I'm doing for the rest of spring. I'm running in the GA half in 2 weeks, and then I think I'm doing another half on April 21st. Still trying to figure out if I'm going to go for Flying Pig in Cincinnati on May 6th, but now I'm thinking I may hold off. It's been 15 days now since my last marathon. I did a long run of 10.5 hill miles this past Thursday and could tell I definitely was not totally recovered yet. I know I want to maintain a somewhat good mileage base, but I need to do more research on the matter. If I don't do Flying Pig, I'm not sure what that base should be. Anyway, I'm thinking probably a 16 week training calendar at least, maybe more this time.

How's the packing going, Maureen? How about the challenge at your university?

Today was a full rest day- NO activity and I mean NONE. HAHA- it was a true couch day. :)

Well for chicago I'm starting just after the grandma's marathon in june. Use a mixture of different training plans. So normally i use kind of my own training plan which is a compilation of a few different schedules.

as of right now I just have the trail mix 50K grandmas's marathon and chicago. I may try and fit in a 5 or 10K in if I can.

well good luck on the moving GOGOSHIRE, hope it doesn't get to heck tick.

Hi Fraggle, I'm starting training in earnest first week of April. I'm going to use a Jeff Galloway plan again.

I'm moving up to Barrow, Alaska, very shortly, so no other races for me, unless I get down to Fairbanks to run the Equinox Marathon (well, I'd just run the half).

How about you?

I'm from Boston, too! Burlington, actually! We moved to Chi-town when I was a kid, but I spent every summer on the Cape (Craigsville Beach), and all my extended family on both sides is still there. :)

The fitness challenge sounds good- I am always looking for new ways to keep myself accountable- more the better! Good luck with it! :)

I know what you mean with not sure if it's being lazy or taking it easy because it's necessary- I felt like that all week! HAHA- I knew I needed to recover from the marathon, but I know I did NOT need to stay in my PJs all day with my feet propped up on the couch, with my laptop and with a constant, steady stream of food from my pantry to my mouth. HAHA. This Saturday was my first real run since the marathon- 7 days after and I got in 6 miles on my normal course in a 9:30 pace avg. Felt good! Sunday, yesterday, I did weights, about an hour of step and a 1 hour yoga class.

Today was my first back to normal day and I taught my step class then did 6.2 miles on the treadmill with 4 x 1 mile intervals with .25 mile jogs in between. I was so excited that nothing hurt after! Woo-hoo! Tomorrow is a non-run day- 1 hour pump and 1 hour body jam classes.

Boston- the scoop is I will have to wait until September at registration to see if I get in for 2013. Even though I qualified, that is no guarantee to get in. The way it works is each gender/age group has a qualifying time. The first two days of registration you are allowed to register if you have a marathon time 20 minutes faster than qualifying time for your age group. The next two days are for those to register 15 minutes faster than qualifying time, then the next two days 10 minutes, next two days 5 minutes and the final wave of registering for those 5 min faster or up to exact qualifying time. If the field fills up prior to the last wave, then that is it. My marathon time is 5:23 faster than qualifying, so I will get to try and register in the second to last wave. They had to turn away thousands of applicants last year! However, 2013 qualifying standards were lowered across the board in all age/gender categories for the first time in many years in the hopes that it would help not have to turn people away that actually qualified. My age group was lowered by 5 minutes- 2012 was 3:50 and 2013 is 3:45. If I get in, I can't imagine I won't go, but it is still 14 months away! We're from Boston- well, hubby is really from Boston, I'm from Florida, but lived in Boston for 10 years before we moved to Atlanta. We still have family and friends there so it would be fun.

Sorry for my absence, Renee! Last week was a little overwhelming for me, and I was freaking out by Thursday.

Somehow, I made it through the week and had a decent weekend, and I'm feeling good this week, though admittedly a bit tired.

My university started a school-wide fitness challenge, so I joined a team with the Center for Distance Learning, and we have to post our workout minutes each week, submit our weight on Mondays, and I have to send in a pic today. Ugh. But I need to do this b/c I want to do more stuff with my school - it's hard as I'm so far away, and let's face it...it won't hurt me to be more accountable to yet more people. :)

I'm in that weird in-between place now where I'm pretty much feeling better in the hips and knees but the shoulder is still in agony, and I'm no longer sure if I'm being smart and taking it easy or if I'm being lazy. It's hard for me to tell sometimes.

How was everyone's weekends? Did you get your bills and taxes done, Renee? Did you run over the weekend? I'm guessing your muscles feel all back to normal by now.

Are you going to run Boston? You said you qualified, but you didn't say if you're going to run it or not.....

:)

Hey, where's my team been lately? Me, myself, and I.

Hello, Renee.

Hello.

How was your run today?

I still haven't run since the marathon besides my epic fail on Wednesday, but am planning on it tomorrow.

HAHA- no, not quite so much fun doing it that way.)

I did weights on Thursday and I felt like a total weakling since I've not done any in two weeks! Today was my first class back and I taught 1 hour of Bodyjam and took a 1 your Flow clas (combo Tai chi, yoga, and pilates). Felt, great. Looking forward to trying the running thing again yesterday. Quads and hams felt good in classes this morning, so I'm optimistic.

Daughter has a gymnastics' meet tonight 2 hours away, so got to get on the road with them in an hour or so. Hope you guys had a great week!!!

Well, I must say, Germany sounds pretty good. I love Germany, especially Bavaria. :) At least it would be a lot less cold, right? :)

I'm sorry you are dealing with all that stress. How's the grading going? Did you get a lot done last night? I like the idea of getting in sets of squats, abs etc between pages or papers. Probably a good way to break up the school work, too, huh?

Quads feel great today. They are still a tiny bit sore, but I'm definitely going to try a jog this morning. It's so weird not heading to my classes to teach. This is my last subbed out day and I was very tempted to call the sub and tell her I want the class back, but that is kind of a big no-no unless they are doing a huge favor to cover to begin with. I don't even personally know this instructor. :( Whah, I want my class back- and it was weights which I've not done ANY since two weeks ago today! I'm going to die when I do!

Today will be catch up on the computer. Got to pay the bills, do mom's bills (I do all her finances since she is by herself and in an assisted living facility), then I need to get together tax stuff for both her and us. Also, we are going on a 3 week trip to Italy, Greece, and Turkey end of May/beginning of June and I need to start planning stuff for it! Got a spring break cruise coming soon too, and again I've done nothing with planning due to all the extra running and marathon stuff. Certainly not complaining, I just need to start doing! :)

It's cold and dreary here today. My son almost missed the school bus, and as he's running down the street to catch it, I see that he forgot to fix his hair. It was standing up in all directions so I yell down the street, "Fix your hair, pour some water on it!" I could totally see him stressing out, trying to run to make the bus WHILE he's pouring water on his head. He's in 7th grade and in the middle of starting to feel insecure/awkward- poor thing!

Alright, team, want to hear what's up with everyone and their workouts/exercise. I need to restart with new motivation!!!!

LET'S GO TEAM!!!!!
