I like the thinking ahead. However, if we do the tri in Thailand so that the water portion will have really good snorkeling for me, a rickshaw should be easy to find. Just a thought.

Since I'm a true athlete, I won't need a cooler. I'll be wearing a CamelBak full of Hefeweizen.

For the triathlon, -just in case a rickshaw may be hard to find, why don't we do a carriage ride with a horse? Plus, you can bring your food and beer in a cooler.

For every marathon I have done I've alway's had at least these three goals plus a couple extra hear and there:

1. get to the start line healthy.

2. finish the race.

3. make friends.

for chicago my added goals are:

hahaha - I would never get off the boat.

If I did, it would be with a snorkel or a scuba tank, and I'd jump overboard and spend the day with the fish and coral.

See how I just made this dream tri in a tropical locale??

Nancy - as someone who has made 3 vet visits in the last 3 weeks, that is some anxiety!

Yes....anxiety before races and even a lot of my training is a HUGE issue. I shake like a dog going to the vet before a race!

Before my ironman, I was yacking in the bushes I was so nervous. Let's not even talk about the port-a-potties before the running events. :-)

Nancy, would you mind telling me more about the PT stuff? Right before the marathon last year, I decided I wanted to become a trainer, and then after the marathon, I started researching the different certifying orgs, and.... well, I got overwhelmed and I sort of fizzled out on this goal because I don't have anyone to ask questions of or talk to. I did talk with reps from a few different places (ACE, NASM, ACSM), but they just talked about how their program is the best, blah blah blah, and I wasn't able to discern why I would pick one over another. I'm sort of being stalked now by an NASM rep these days. She's really nice, but it makes me think she's on commission or something.

How did you choose? I don't want to work for a gym - so that doesn't come into play (especially since I'm moving to Barrow in May), but I do want to be certified in this (and maybe in Life Coaching as well) to do on the side. I seem to do it unofficially all the time anyway. Might as well get paid something. ;)

I'm the same way about group swimming (and running, and probably biking). I like to train alone and not be reminded that I'm so slow. What do you mean about Calming down before your swim? Are you a nervous swimmer? Do you mean calming down before swim portion of race in tri or before laps in the pool?

I just don't know why there aren't more races like that.... :-)

I worked with a coach last year for my ironman. Unfortunately I really didn't like the group swim thing and train better by myself, so I don't get into a masters program. I belong to a beautiful gym that has a couple of great pools and I go at night when nobody is there. My big thing is CALMING down before my swim.

Ironically, I am also a personal trainer, (ACSM) but I do that on the side from my day job usually in the spring - fall since I do it outside.

Nancy, that's MY kind of triathlon. Let me know if you ever organize one. I'm there.

I think I said this before, but if not, I'll pop in with it again.

I am a huge believer in the Jeff Galloway plans. Don't be turned off by the run/walk method - if you never want to walk, that's fine, but still check out his plans. They incorporate XT and tempo runs and speed work weekly. For Chicago last year, I didn't focus as much on speed b/c I really was more concerned with getting my endurance up to where it needed to be, but this year, I will work on speed, too, as I'm realizing that the faster I am, the less endurance I need.... hahhahaha .... the people who win marathons or age group only have to workout for a few hours, and the back of the packers are out there for several.......

Nancy, do you have a pool now or are you going to the gym? Is there a coach for you to work with or a Masters group that might make it more fun since you don't seem to think you're very good at....

I like that training plan because it involves not only a speed workout, but cross training is encouraged. The book is a little long in areas of the success stories....kind of like, Okay...okay..it works! But the speed workouts and the plan are definitely worth it.

I have a lot of friends that get injured when they try to run too much with some of the plans out there, but this plan gives them the rest on their knees and hips by doing spin, swimming, etc. while keeping them active in cardio.

BTW - I have started my swimming again. I SUCK at swimming. I mean, geez, I grew up with a pool and it was there because you got hot from lying in the sun, right? My idea of a great triathlon would be a ride in a boat, a rickshaw, and a walk in the park to finish for a beer and a sandwich...haha.

Oh, and Nancy, thanks for that nice compliment. I don't feel fast though! I've sure been huffing and puffing and pretty much dying through any of my tempo or interval runs lately! I hope they've not just worn me out instead of helped me improve!

Nancy, thanks also for that link.I'm super excited to check this out. That sounds just like what I need! My problem in finding a plan that works well for me is finding something that can work around my classes. All of the more aggressive running plans calls for little to no cross training and I have to whether i want to or not. Everything I've been reading on the Runner's World forums talks about "more mileage, more mileage" and it scares me to do too much of that on top of the other stuff I'm doing.

Ashley, I'll let you know about anything I find. I'm one of those crazy, obsessive researchers, much to my husband's dismay. :) Too much time spent on researching and not doing! LOL! SOmething that is fun though and FREE is going to runnersworld.com, searching for Smart Coach, and plugging in your info for it to spit out a free, computer-generated training program based on how many weeks you have to train, your last race time, etc. This is what I did for my current training plan- however, like I said, I will be looking elsewhere this time. Many experienced runners bash this plan on the runner's world forums, but regardless i think it is a good to have it as a cross reference. It gave me speed work outs this time, unlike last time and I know that they have already helped me greatly.

I love the goals!!! THANKS for that link Nancy!!!!! I am definitely focusing on getting faster this time around and will check it out. I had a whim earlier today that this afternoon is going to be a speed workout for me. Just taking it one day at a time and making the beginning of training for this as enjoyable as possible (e.g. just doing what i feel like on each given day for exercising) to me that leaves the element of adventure and free will. getting into a steady routine will help me commit later to a regimented training program.

I'll be curious to see which training program you go with Renee. Sounds like you have some good insight into some different ones and your research done. I have only used Hal Higdon's in the past - I'm going to start reading up and "shopping" around to see if there's anything different out there for me this time around, too.

Hi!
I'm with Dash - my goal is to stick to the plan. I get so busy with work and business trips it gets hard to fit in runs. (If I don't, I'm disappointed with my finish time and then I beat myself up!)

My other goal is to remain under 4:55 for the finish and be lively enough to go out that night and have some fun in Chicago!!

I've used a couple different training plans including Hal Higdon's (which I love and still use) but I also read a book called Run Less, Run Faster that incorporates some pretty easy speed workouts on a track or treadmill and it took 35 minutes off one of my marathons. I attached the link. It's super easy to put one of these speed workouts in once a week for your short run.

Maybe I can be as fast as Ebunny!! :-) The link is below- www2.furman.edu/sites/first/Pages/rl

Good goals, Guys!

My goals for this....hmmmmmmmmmm, well I'm sure that after my marathon in Myrtle Beach, I'll be able to have more concrete goals, but for now.........

1. Well, first is to just make it to that event and actually do it. I'm always afraid something will happen between now and then as far as getting injured along the way. For me, since I'm a fitness instructor, if I get injured with the running, it's the running that I will need to back off from so I can effectively teach my classes.

2. Find a different training program to grow with. Not counting Boston (since that feels like a different lifetime it was so long ago), I followed Hal Higdon's Novice 2 for my Savannah marathon and for Myrtle, I've been following with some of my own tweaks, Smart Coach's plan based on what I wanted my goals to be. I'm not really happy with this plan and I'm going to be searching for a different one. I've been reading a ton on the Runnersworld.com forums- looking into doing a modified version of Hal Higdon's Advanced 1 or 2 plans since it has more miles per week as well as speed work. I'm also looking at the Pfitz 18/55 plan, but the problem is I will be continuing all my classes so it seems harder to work around with that one.

3. PR

I'll have more concrete goals once my training for this heats up. Looking forward to having new goals though! :)

My goals for the marathon are these; in order of importance:

1) Consistency with the training program I choose. Follow through on every run. I will be tracking this on here on the Today's Run thread and tracking it on a calendar in my apartment as well so I can visualize it in the place I am every day.

2) Get a PR - I want to get under 6 hours. My current PR is 6:12:26. I know I can do this if I am dilligent about training.

3) Re-train my body to run, only this time faster. I loved the process of getting to know myself as I built up the miles back in 2010 from January to October for my first marathon. I'm going to wipe the slate clean and start over, fresh, with the same mentality of that first year to learn how to run faster. Starting with low mileage and building up, that way I will also reap the benefits of weight loss since I have excess fat that can be lost with higher cardio running. I think using the first four months to dabble with that and then building momentum that way.. the 18 week training program that will achieve goal #1 will be that much more under way.

I have a few different mini goals:

Time: PR

Vanity: I want my legs to look as AWESOME as they did last October. Running gave me mad quads that I sort of crushed out on.

Soul goal: A PR is inevitable since I ran with 1/2 a lung last time, it felt like, being so so sick, and a great time would be nice, but really - REALLY - the reason I am doing a marathon is because I want to have as much fun as I did last year, I want that feeling of participation in something big, I want to run alongside 45k people, knowing that they have spent 2012 thinking about this day just like me. I want to feel strong and secure in my body. There's something so personally satisfying knowing that even if you aren't fast, you've trained yourself to the point that you can endure 26.2 miles. It's SO satisfying.

Today, I am untrained. I don't have that. Wouldn't be able to do this today.

So that's my goal. Just to be there. Just to partake. Just to live my life. Finishing is great, finishing well is great. But really, I'm shooting for that awesome feeling of self-satisfaction, that ability to look down at my muscular legs and go, "Yep - I can do this again!"
