I started out trying to cook 7 beans and barley for the first time in the crock pot, I guess I added too much veg stock to it because there was lots of liquid left over, so I added a bunch of veggies and some quinoa pasta and it turned out to be a really great soup. By tomorrow the pasta will have puffed up and then it will resemble a stew I guess. But it was good.

Good Luck,Good Health!

Why didn't you just cut the potatoes in quarters and throw them in with the roast? Just wondered.

Glad to hear that, LynetteMom! I really like it that way and it's really convenient. Today I have a pork shoulder roast with a "Kitchen Sink Spice Rub" on it--otherwise known as the "I'm running late and these are the spices I've grabbed out of the cabinet" rub. ha I can't wait to get home and see how it turns out. I wish I'd taken time to throw a few foil-wrapped potatoes for baked potatoes in the other CP to go with it. Rhonda

thank you! I think I will try it later this week: I love lasagna and have most of the ingredients on hand. It looks like I just need to use significantly more liquid for it to work in the CP. Thanks for replying to my question

Hi LynetteMom,
You can put in uncooked, broken lasagna noodles to fit the crock pot (or your favorite pasta), your favorite sauce and a can of beef broth and about 2 cups of tomato juice (I use my MIL's home-made V-8 and it's really good). Layer these like normal in your CP, and cook on low for about 4 hours. Much longer and the pasta gets mushy. Hope this extremely stream-lined recipe helps! Rhonda

It's feed a hungry teenager day.....A long drive to collect him from the football academy, so the smell of a meal almost ready to serve will be very welcome on our return. He gets beef rarely while away, so the first meal of the weekend is always beef stew! Potatoes, vegetables, a good quality beef stock, a bay leaf and a good sprinkling of Italian herb seasoning. All that's left to do is to make a few dumplings.

A home made tuna noodle casserole that I doctored up to give it a little kick. I LOVE spicy food but dh can't eat it so I have to break my recipes down after they are made and add the extra spice to mine. But when you are slow cooking, the spices sometimes get a raw taste when added at the end and not the beginning of cooking.

I have a round steak in the CP for supper tonight for my boys. Hubby and 7-yr. old son are on their own (I'm singing at a local Christian TV station) and then we have a V-day party at our church for the youth. I did the steak pretty basic--garlic powder, onion powder, pepper, soy sauce, and a splash of lemon and lime juice. I have baked beans at the ready for them already. And as my friend says, Yum-Yum, supper all done!

Eh it has more to do with she's not used to my kitchen but before some of it might have been being difficult. I think after staying with her children for so long this time round she is a bit more flexible.

Tonight is baked chicken drumsticks, boiled/mashed potatoes, and broccoli.

She is playing on your feelings of guilt. If she doesn't want to eat what you prepare, and she doesn't want to cook her own - so be it. If she misses a couple of meals she will change her tune. Don't let her pull your strings.

They are always sold in pairs. Open the package, rewrap one of them and put it in the freezer - or if your cooker is large enough, cook both of them and then freeze the second one already cooked. Either way works.

Only crockpot use this week was veggie stock and Turkey chili which I will be making Wednesday. I made Chef Meg's Chicken Satay last night and it was good but since I didn't have curry paste I should have added more heat. Tomorrow I am trying a sparkrecipe for curried shrimp in coconut milk.

That is an unusual recipe for Shepard's Pie. Though it is usually made in this Country with beef, it is called Shepard's Pie because the sheep herders made it out in the field, and it was made with lamb. I've also never seen cheese of any kind used in this dish. I may try this with some modifications - it does show promise. Thanks for the information.

Personally, I use beef broth and add a bit of worchestershire sauce. Also, I just use plain old mixed veggies where she says to use corn and peas. I like my "pie" to have carrots. :)

Do you have a beef or lamb stew recipe for the crock pot? I would think, with a little added spices, that would work well. At the end of the day, no matter what recipe you use in the slow cooker, it will have to be put into a casserole, covered with mashed potatoes and put under the broiler or in the oven before serving.

I tried a recipe I found on here last week--your favorite beef roast, a pkg. each of brown gravy mix, italian dressing mix (I used zesty) and ranch dressing mixed with enough water for a thicker gravy since the broth from the meat will add to it. (I also put my roasts in frozen because they'll be cooking at least 10 hours while I'm at work.) The roast and the gravy were soooo good!!! I couldn't believe the mixture turned out that well. I can't find the thread now, but if you're the one who posted this recipe--THANK YOU!

I have two homes, one where I work, and one where I go to relax and dream of my retirement some day. I have all the equipment in both places, and the one I use the most is my microwave. The microwave I have where I work has a built in convection oven - you wouldn't even miss the oven if you had that. You could do it all in the microwave.

Hi Long!

With the oven I miss baking fish, biscuits, pizza and rolls. But you are right--the microwave is my friend, and I even have a spare one in storage just in case.

I am not cooking CrockPot for the next two days but I am joining in here to get fresh ideas. My oven is out and I depend upon simple CP recipes, so I will be joining in on this thread. Thank you for starting it, newlife.

Today I am just eating a store bought ham wrap and tomorrow I will be eating store bought pkgs. of mashed potatoes. I used to be a creative and an inexpensive cook. Hope to get back to that.
