I just use a frying pan prior to adding my meat to the pot! I usually have 3 going at once with different meats, so simply wash the frying pan in between.
My 2 large crock-pots have timers and temperature controls as well as keep warm settings. Both are Black & Decker.

Review from Slate.com (first part wouldn't apply if you only want to brown meat in it):
Rival 6-Quart Oval Versaware Slow Cooker

This slow cooker boasts a crock insert that can be used on your stovetop, since some recipes require light sautéing or browning prior to cooking to increase flavor. But after testing two recipes that required this sort of pre-crocking sauté—penne with spicy onion sauce and Moroccan vegetables with couscous—I decided this feature is too much of a pain. It's recommended that the heat not get too high or you run the risk of cracking the pot. The pot warms up slowly, but then retains the heat too well: I wound up slightly burning my garlic and leeks. Plus, vegetables cooked in the dishes were not quite as tender as those cooked in other pots. A further detraction is this slow cooker's opaque top. If you're an impatient chef like I am, it's torturous to not lift the lid and check on your dish's progress; not to witness its progress at all is even harder. The design also needs improvement; the spidery legs made me think a large roach was crawling across the counter. And there's no timer.

Wow! I certainly didn't expect anyone to do all that research! Thanks, I really appreciate it. It appears that the All Clad does meet all my requests with a VERY hefty price tag. Now will have to consider how badly I want everything I was asking for! lol Not sure my husband would let me fork out $300 even if we could afford it! I had the West Bend that you have years ago and I was happy with it, so may just go with that again until I can find something more in my price range!
I really appreciate the input that everyone has given me!
Thanks again!!!

My tiny, ancient West Bend has the removable metal portion with the griddle base. I like the Nesco roaster, it's several things combined in one including an oven, a steamer, a crockpot, etc, but I don't know if it's programmable. I think the $190 All Clad is the high-end one I was thinking of, but don't know if they can both brown & program. You could write West Bend and ask them to make a programmable one, and use a lamp timer until then.

All of these are programmable; maybe start there with a programmable search?:

Here's another search, look at the $300 All Clad, I believe it's programmable:

I only buy the inexpensive ones from Walmart or GoodWill. And I never brown anything. Hope this helps!

Another thought: Wouldn't CorningWare's slow cooker be stove-top safe, since their corning ware casserole dishes are stove-top safe? You could call CorningWare's toll free number and ask. Here's another link that includes CorningWare, don't know if the other links above included CorningWare or not:

Man I really LOVED the West Bend Versatility one in this link; thought I'd found IT for sure. Then realized it's not programmable; duh. (But I think I'm looking at my next slow cooker, ha ha!) So I searched again for programmable slow cookers at this same site:

Yes, I have searched. I found the Westbend allows you to use it on the stovetop to brown with, but does not come with the option to set your time and temperature (other than warm, low and high). AND the Westbend is made in USA.
The Hamilton Beach Set 'n Forget® 6 Qt. Programmable Slow Cooker With Spoon/Lid has the other features I like but you cannot use it on stovetop and it is not made in USA.
Hoping for a cross between the 2 but can't seem to find it so was hoping someone else knew of one that I am not finding! lol

Christy have you searched online? You can find what you want, compare features, then either order online or find out online where the nearest location is that carries one of those.

I doubt a high-end one like you want will be at a big-box discount store. Sometimes mall anchors like Pennys, Macys will have them in stock.

I love your quote! Dave Ramsey is awesome!
I just got back from Target and Walmart. None of theirs are made in USA and none can be used on the stovetop to brown the meats before slowcooking.
Guess I am asking too much! emoticon

Thankfully when your slow cooker crapped out it didn't cause any damage to your house. That's why I'm leery of leaving one on and leaving the house. I like the idea of a cheap timer, I just use the timer on my oven.

From what I understand, the browning of he meat cannot be done with the slow cooker itself. For best taste results, sear the meat 5 minutes on each side (for roasts) in a cast iron skillet before putting it into a slow cooker. This method works the best for me.

I spent $200.00 on a 7 quart Kitchenaid slowcooker that crapped out on me after only 4 uses. The area above the control knobs literally melted from the inside. scary stuff.

I recommend checking the slow cooker ratings at

I don't know. Probably. Probably a high-end one (read: expensive).

A lamp timer at Walmart is about 5 bucks; does the same thing.

Tho a NEW, high-end programmable crockpot would be REALLY nice; oooo-la-la.

I know that you can use the west bend slow cooker on the stove to brown your food and then put it back on it's base to continue to cook. My question is this...
Is there a slow cooker than you can do this with that also has a programmable timer and temperature? Am I expecting too much from a slow cooker?
Thanks in advance for any input!
