Cathy--I have started taking 1 as suggested by my NUT. My energy level was better yesterday. Hoping it continues to increase.

I am currently on day 4 of my pre-op diet and my biggest complaint is the lack of energy at the end of the day. I get home from work and all I want to do is lay in bed and read or play games on my iPad.

Doing good. I have my 3 meals per day of protein.by the time I get the protein in I don't have time for any veggies and so for my snacks I have some veggies as well as still using my low sodium V8 juice with my protein powder-unflavored-Unjury.

Moving right along.

Have you tried the Unjury brand. I mix honey Greek yogurt, water and vanilla or strawberry. Although I would love regular food, this brand is good. From what I have read, the protein shakes will be part of my diet for a while -- maybe always. 60 - 100 g of protein is a lot in our society.

Great support

Well, I am so glad I didn't buy a bunch of one type of Protein shake. It is hard for me to stand those things-I have to thin them out and I cannot drink anything with chocolate as it just goes through me immedately. I will be so glad when I can actually eat the protein-instead of drinking. Jan 3rd will be my first post-op visit and time that they up my diet from full liquid. yay!
I can pretty much mug for fat free refried beans right now.

I am sipping water and Powerade Zero (has electrolytes). Plus, I have SF popsicles.

I am assured it will get better. Onward I trudge.

Thank you for sharing all this information about the shakes. I still have 3 months to go to meet my insurance requirements and 13 pounds to meet my required 20. I went to walmart to look for some protein shakes. I found Body Fortress and Muscle milk, which by reading some comments it sounds pretty good. Please keep sharing your ideas! I'm sure I'm not the only one stalking this board!

I just ran across a site to check out-Nashua Nutrition. I think I will be ordering some variety packs and samples from them.

Has anyone been on their site or done business with them before?

My husband and I saw that in Walmart and will be picking up a couple of them to try out.

We are getting some ideas, etc going before my surgery next year.
I seem to be starting to be somewhat lactose intolerant beforehand. Tried soy milk-I actually like the stuff. So, I am using that right now. The trouble with that is that it is so expensive-whereas Nonfat milk is cheaper. Trying to save some here and there. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Wal-Mart also carries Myoplex lite and Muscle Milk Lite which are both good for your pre and post op protein needs. I love the strawberry flavor of the Muscle Milk. It tastes like ice cream!

It's been a busy and fast week. This is such good information on the pre op diet. Thanks so much. I have one more week before I start the diet. My goal this week is to get some exercise!! Good luck to everyone here. Thanks so much for the very helpful posts on where to find what we need.

I live in the "boonies" I guess - I checked all the grocery stores near me for low sodium, including Walmart. Things tend to be regional I think sometimes. Yes I bought some things but like I was told - taste changes after surgery, so don't over buy any one thing.
That is nice of your husband to support you. Mine says he does, but he still eats stuff not good for him. I just leave the kitchen when that happens.
I committed to surgery when I was at 377 lbx, lost 56 before surgery, and now it is 11 mos. since I started and I am down to 255. I need to exercise but just can't get the mind set.
GL~!

Walmart carries the low-sodium broth, etc..

My husband and I both use the low sodium right now and also it will be after my surgery next year when I get it done.
We both have to use that and low or no sugar items as well. I am diabetic, my husband just does it as I cannot have it.

Didn't you get the things you needed before the surgery so, you wouldn't have to worry about getting them afterwards for a little bit anyway?

I used boullion for broth but realized I was getting too much salt/sodium and couldn't find low sodium. I bought the Nectar no-g=flavor thinking I would add to things, but tried once and gagged - so its in a bag with 4 other jugs of practically new powders. GL
SF popsicles got me through...lol

I am on my pre-op liquid diet as well. I am really partial to the Nectar brand shakes. They come in tons of flavors. I really like the Fuzzy Naval best. It makes a great shake when mixed with some water and ice. 1 scoop with 8oz water is 100 kcal, 23g protien, 0 carbs, 0 sugars. I have lost about 10 lb in a week, and although I am a bit hungry I'm not famished. Are you allowed any broth or strained cream soups? My doctor allows these but I have to count them in my protien & carb count. Broth is great because it is essentially nothing. I like to dilute the cream soup that I have straind with some vegatable broth to lighten it & stretch it a bit so a little tiny bit seems more satisfying.

Love, Light, & Happiness to all... Kelley

hi, I am into day 9 of pre op 3 week shake/one meal a day. not too bad, I have had some slips along the way, but mostly finding the shakes to help with hunger. I am using Unjury shakes, the choc. and chicken flavor are very good. I am lactose intolerant but having no gas problems with these. keep going, surgery is right around the corner:)

Hi, I am a little over a month out since my surgery. I am still doing shakes in the morning, I find it is the best way to get my protien in for the day. I started adding instant decaf coffee to my shakes. I will sometimes add cinnamon or pumpkin spice to the vanilla flavor. So adding some non-sugary spices may help with the shakes. I use Pure Protein powder. As far as the gas, has not been a big problem for me. I find walking really helps relieve any gas pretty quick.

I assume you are pre-surgery prep? Mine was up to 4 protein shakes, SF jello or popsicles,
beef or chicken broth/bouillion, vitamins.
I used a Walgreens brand Whey and skim milk, 1 t. flavoring, ice and immersion blender. But after surgery I needed to change brands of Whey, skip blender and use 1/2 water, although I find the protein clumps a bit when just stirred or shaken, so that was a turn-off.
And then I had to go to "clear" protein drink - Isopure = many flavors but green apple best for me - but pricey and only found at GNC.
PS -I had 3 weeks of pre-op diet!
As for gas = a lot of patients on my surgeon's Facebook page complained of gas right after surgery - but I had none BUT now 6 months later - I am so gassy and stinky - its embrassing! So we are all different.
I know it is expensive but I would switch brands of Whey = what you have may taste better later - after surgery. GL!

I am on my 6th day of the protein shakes and was wondering if anyone has any other tips. My Physician allows 4 meals during this two weeks and I have had 1 at day 4. I have found that if I cut the sweetness of the shakes with plain koolaid powder or cocoa, they are much more palatable. One of my biggest problems is the gas after drinking the shake and I know it is from blending it. Does anyone have any other suggestions.

I will not give up because this is so worth anything I have to go through to get there. I have been overweight my whole life and it took until I was 47 and 321 pounds before I would give myself permission to do this. I had the thought it was the "easy" way out and I could lose weight if I wanted to because I have before, 100 at a time. As my Dr. says though, I have dieted my way right up to 321 pounds. I am very glad to have this forum of support and hope that it is very active.

Btw, my Physician uses Bariatric Advantage shakes.
