That's my problem too, LadyJake - portion control! It'd be ideal if I could cut it out completely, but I know myself better than to expect that, so it's best if I work on understanding what the word "treat" means. emoticon

That's a good plan, Sheryl! Maybe some carrots and sliced cucumber with the salsa, and I can even mix the salsa in with some plain greek yogurt to make it stick to the veggies better and sneak some protein in. emoticon

Durn it, now I'm getting hungry! emoticon Thanks for the suggestion. emoticon

APROUDWANNABE....
ever consider having a crudite platter of veggies with that hot queso salsa recipe.
Even if you did half tortilla/pita chips and half raw veggies...you would be ahead of the game

I have been trying to get my pre diabetes husband to learn portion control, he eats way to much.
The hot salsa may be the key to not eating as much as you used to. It is a hard habit to break.

Is it possible to subsitute the same thing for the same thing? emoticon

Sometimes I crave chips, salsa and queso reaaaaaaally bad, and I haven't had the strength to give it up yet. I'll eat a whole jar of cheese, a whole jar of salsa, and a whole bag of salty chips all in one sitting!

Hubby got a ghost pepper salsa that's REALLY hot emoticon , so what we've started getting this kind instead of our usual brand, and we just mix a couple table spoons of queso with equal parts of the ghost pepper salsa. The taste attacks the craving and the heat makes it satisfy with a fraction of what we used to eat!

I am with LADYJAKE1 ...
since I've been on low-carb (no starch/no sugar) my cravings have gone away.
My sense of sweet has been greatly reduced so that fruit tastes very sweet to me.

for ice cream...what I would do is have Greek yogurt with fresh strawberries.
If I needed more sweet...I would add more fresh strawberries...

It's all what you put your mind to.

Thanks for you all of your replies! What I'm actually looking for food-for-food substitutions.
Like, when Sandraregina said she substitutes salted carrots (eventually carrots eliminating the salt) for chips.
As an example, fill in the blank:
When I crave _____ I eat _____ instead.
ex: When I crave chocolate I eat ______ instead
or: When I crave ice cream, I eat ______ instead.
I've heard that eggs are a good substitute for ice cream--has anyone found this to be true?
I'm looking for healthy food substitutions that take care of specific junk food cravings, not just snack suggestions. And preferably ones that people have found to actually work, not just ones they've heard about
Not that I don't like the suggestions and discussions--I'm just looking for very specific help in this area.
I hope that all makes sense....?

Fiber one brownies are awesome. I keep them onhand for a treat. I love sf jello myself, and pistachios.

I eat low carb so once I got past the induction phase the cravings went away.

I eat:
string cheese
almonds, I love the coca covered ones
sugar free jello
chunky peanut butter

I am a big salt addict. I used to have one or two snack bags of chips a DAY. Ugh.

Any way, I weaned myself off of that by salting my carrot sticks, and gradually reducing the salt until I could enjoy them as-is.

Ok, so I am new to SP, and I'm beginning my new weight-loss and healthy-eating journey. I have a major sweet-tooth which is one of my biggest obstacles. So I thought I'd start this topic where people can post what they have learned to be successful healthy substitutions for junk food cravings, so we can all help each other out with our temptations!
