JBACON4 - To fully start over, you must first leave the team (by scrolling down the bottom of the main team page and click the "Leave This Team" button), then rejoin the team by clicking "Join This Team" at the top after the page refreshes.

I joined this challenge two years ago and liked having the challenge. I have not been Sparking for over a year and would like to get back to it. Can I rejoin it? How do I do that?

You can start today if you would like -- it's an ongoing challenge. However, the prizes won't be started until January. emoticon

Thanks, Coach Denise. I got the video of the exercises for arthritis by Dr. Vad and I'll see which of those I can use instead of the lunges and squats.

WATERONE - There are too many variants with arthritis for me to offer any specific exercises that you can replace those with. Unfortunately, because we don't have access to your health history and/or able to do an in-person evaluation, it would be best to check with your doctor and/or a physical therapist to help you find the best exercises to replace those with. You do want to continue to strength train so that will help with the arthritis, but I can't give other specific exercises you can do.

Sorry I can't give you more information!

Hi,

I have arthritis in my knees and articles I've recently read, plus a segment on one of the SparkRadio episodes said lunges and squats should not be done if you have arthritis. What lower body strengthening exercises can I substitute for the lunges and squats when doing the videos?

Thank you.

Addendum: I got the email about Dr. Vlad's exercise DVD and have ordered it. Thank you so much.

Thanks. Funny, I posted daily on the weekly forums, but never saw those...I guess I needed to look in the "more topics" part. I was just mainly curious.

I announced the winners each week in the weekly threads. So winners for week 1 were posted in a thread under the week 1 forum, week 2 in the week 2 forum, etc. The titles of each thread would also correspond with that week and look like "Week 1 - Winners Announced." You can go to each of those threads to view the winners.

I won a dvd on the site and I'm not sure how to track it. It's cardio blast the workout is cardio blast 80s from start to finish it's about 20 mins that includes warmup and cool down. Do I track them with the workout or just the workout? Do I also just track the other workouts on the video by them selfs or the whole thing

Someone busier them me is exercising right now.

It doesn't matter how slowly you go, as long as you don't stop.

LADYG67 - You received your trophy for completing this challenge on 1/28/2012. So you must have done this challenge last year and unfortunately, you can only receive one trophy for completing the challenge (you can't receive it multiple times), although you can do the challenge more than once.

Hi, I was a winner of a $25 credit in the sparkstore and I stupidly deleted the message that had the code in it. Is it possible to get that code again?

I pledge to never see my highest weight on a scale EVER again

It's actually pretty simple. Either you do it, or you don't!

Hi Firefly - are you using the nutrition tracker? If you are and it is shared, you can post on the Diet & Nutrition message board here on Spark. That is staffed with professionals who are more capable of advising you on calories. You can find the message boards on the Community tab.

In the end, you will have to learn to listen to your body and do the best at Clean Eating and moving to build stronger muscles that you can. Good luck!

Hi again,

Yes, I added in the strength training exercises and my range went up (not too surprised about that -- great job on the videos sparkpeople!). I'm more interested in how to best create the deficit I'm looking for and to do that, I'd like to know what my maintenance calorie level is. I'm trying to get the last 5 pounds off and I'm trying to be accurate about what my calorie deficit is each week. Is the top of the range my maintenance level? Or is it a range I should aim for to lose weight?

FIREFLY_13, To see if you need to be eating more calories, go to your Start page and under Calories To Burn This Week click on "Change Goal". Under Cardio Setup, type in the number of calories you burned last week in total and save your changes. If you need to be eating more calories to accommodate the amount of exercise you are doing this will automatically change your calorie range. If your calorie range does not change, this means you are eating the correct amount of calories. Hope that helps!

Hi! Yes it does - I just wanted to be sure I was tracking my exercises correctly. Thanks! My follow-up question then is this: does the addition of daily strength training videos change my maintenance level of calories and if so, how do I figure out what my new maintenance level of calories should be?

FIREFLY_13, If you click on the "Track Calories Burned" button located underneath the videos it will automatically add the video to your fitness tracker and give you an estimated number of calories burned. You will notice that it isn't very many calories and therefore it won't effect the number of calories you should be eating that much. As long as you are tracking the videos, SparkPeople will let you know if you're burning too many calories and need to up the amount that you are eating. Hope that makes sense!

Just a question about the strength training/toning videos. Should I be tracking calories burned from strength training? And if so, do those calories burned affect how much food I should be eating to power those exercises (e.g. 5 toning videos a week and a corresponding increase in calorie intake to power them)? I've never been quite clear on the role of strength training in calorie tracking and food intake adjustments. Thanks!

Thanks for your response! I think overall I just feel better that it may just be a function of the video and that I can feel ok that I am getting in some strength training :) I know that there is a lot that goes into making the site, so I understand that it might not change.

HLTHYLIVN_BAM - Sorry, but I don't have much of an answer for you on this. It may be the way the videos are able to be entered into the tracker that keeps it from listing it that way in the report. I'll pass this info along as a request to see if that can be changed in the future, but I can't guarantee that it will.

Hi,

I am a little bit confused as to why the videos do not show up as "strength training" when I run my reports. One of the things I was hoping was that by doing this challenge that I was finally incorporating strength training and cardio into my routine. I would have expected the arm routines and leg routines to show up in the strength training report. However, when I run my strength training report, the only one that has come up as strength training is the one lower body sculpt *I think* that I did twice this week (I did do the arms exercise with dumbbells - Day 3 twice as well, but that is not showing up as strength training.) So basically, it looks like over the 3.5 weeks I've been doing the challenge that only one day had any strength training.

Am I misunderstanding what it means to be strength training? (Maybe, it's the intensity or duration?) I know some of the videos aren't (like the cardio intervals) but why aren't the core, arm, and leg videos not considered strength training?

Thanks!

Thank you, COACH DENISE, for replying to my no-email-from-you inquiry. Golly gee whiz, you mean in 4 weeks AOL has denied every one your incoming emails? Doesn't seem right.

Any way, I have completed the 4-week challenge and had a great time getting back on track. I reached my goal using SP and now have a NEED to track my nutrition just about every day; YAY SP!! What a great place to be.

When you arise in the morning,

give thanks for the morning light, for your life and strength.

Give thanks for your food and the joy of living.

If you see no reason for giving thanks, the fault lies in yourself.

POFCA3 If you checked off that you completed the challenge last year and received a trophy, you won't be able to check them off this year unless you leave the team and join over.

The fitness minutes still show up in your tracker, and you are considered for the prizes as long as those minutes all meet the requirements. If I got any of that wrong, Coach Denise can correct me!

Nicky - they should be going to your regular email address. It looks like you are using AOL as your email provider and I do know that they rate limit emails coming in. So for someone like us, who sends out millions of emails each day, AOL will only allow a certain number of those to go through in a certain time frame and may either not deliver the rest or they may allow them to go through at a much later time.

Thanks, COACH DENISE! Query: are these emails coming to my SparkMail or to my personal email account? I thought they were supposed to come to SparkMail; no filters there.

KIMMADURA - Everyone is different with that, but I would recommend eating at least a small snack before exercising (maybe a small fruit). There isn't a right answer that applies to everyone, but in general it would be good to have at least a small snack before working out. Here's an Ask the Expert question that addresses that a bit more: www.sparkpeople.com/community

experts.asp?q=59
. Also, this page has some information one what to eat before you workout: www.sparkpeople.com/resource/

.

Hope that helps!

NICKY820 - Those could be getting stuck in your email provider's filters or being delivered to your spam folder. All information that's in the emails though, are listed in the weekly links in the challenge details box.

So I have been doing my Insanity video faithfully as soon as I wake up in the morning, but I don't eat breakfast until after I'm done. Is that o.k? I get cramps easy if I exercise and eat and I don't want to wait for my food to digest b/c by then I won't want to do any exercise. Will this slow my metabolism though? I hear different things and I need to lose weight like yesterday lol!

I'm a mom of 4 children who decided to go back to school for Phys Ed & Health teaching and in the process gained 40lbs. I want to have more energy for myself and children, live a healthy lifestyle and fit into my clothes again. I NEED support!!!

Coach, Nicole, here I've been faithfully following the Challenge, and this is my 4th week, and I've not received ONE email. I have checked off each week and have been tracking nutrition and exercise. What's up?

When you arise in the morning,

give thanks for the morning light, for your life and strength.

Give thanks for your food and the joy of living.

If you see no reason for giving thanks, the fault lies in yourself.

DETERMINED569, For Week 4 you are supposed to pick three of the videos and do them twice instead of once. For example say you pick Day3, Day 5 and Day 7 videos as your three videos to repeat. You would do these videos twice during your workout instead of the one time you have been doing them up until now. Hope that makes sense!

PAMBROWN1010, As long as you're logging 200 fitness minutes each week you qualify for the weekly prizes and you need to have logged 500 minutes for the month to be eligible for the grand prize. Glad you're loving your workouts!

NEWVINE, You would had to have left the team and rejoined to reset everything in order to be able to earn the trophy again this year. All the work that you are doing counts, it's just that you can't check off the weeks anymore

I started on January 1st working out with the intent of working out 30 minutes or more every day. I've made it to day 24 so far and will definately finish strong through day 31 and beyond. My question is, is it ok to substitute in place of the videos, Coach Nicole's 28 day boot camp DVD. I've done the 30 minute work out with weights, three times a week for three week so far and also one day of the 20 minute workout and a 12 minute, cardio/strength training workout from the DVD as well. I absolutely LOVE the 30 minute work out. I also use my Eliptical trainer, and walk 5 times a week. Do I still qualify for the award, since I did not use the 10 minute videos? Thank you and keep going Team!!!!!

Thank you for that post Sarah, I left the team because I injured myself and couldn't continue with the exercises. But, Thank God that I was still getting the posts and received Bluebonnett's question and your answer, so I rejoined the group and will be starting again in a couple of days.

FREENEWMET, If it takes you 20 minutes to walk a mile you've walked at a 20 min per mile pace where as if it takes you 30 minutes to walk a mile you are walking at a 30 minute per mile pace. The faster you walk the better since your heart rate will be up higher and you will be burning more calories. Hope that makes sense!

I think it's fine to log it that way as long as it was strenuous (it's probably a good compromise between the two speeds too). emoticon

Thanks. I did. As it was between 2 m.p.h. and 2.5 mph, but fairly strenuous, I logged it as 2.5 mph. Does this sound honest/realistic?

WIIMII9726 - I'll pass along your feedback. You can still stay on the team and click on the links to do the challenge, you just wouldn't be able to check the boxes again.

The prizes for week 2 were posted on Sunday. You can find that thread in the week 2 forum.

How do I classify walking the dog across the fields? Just under 2 1/2 m.p.h., but strenuous enough to keep me puffing, tho my heart rate is not up to 60% MHR all the time. It's more strenuous than walking in town, but does it count as hiking? Or should I put it down as 2 1/2 mph walking?

It may be a good idea to mention that if you use the same challenge again. I will remember to opt out after this one.

Thank you everyone for your help. Someone else had suggested leaving and coming back but not this far into it. With all the overtime I get and going to the Wellness Center it's tough enough getting my weeks done. Well except for this week I did all my videos today but plan on doing some bonus videos but also got on the treadmill too. Back to work tomorrow so won't get as much done. Did you have the prizes for week 2 posted yet? If you had I may have missed them. Once again ty for all your help and keep up the good work.

I did notice that I won the trophy so figured things were good but kept reading where others had checked it off.

WIIMII9726 - I just checked your account and it shows that you have already checked off the boxes there and completed the challenge. You received the trophy for completing it last January (we re-used this team for the challenge this year). So if you want to be able to check off the boxes again, you will need to remove yourself from the team and rejoin it, but that will start you back at week 1 again.

There is no boxes to check. I have been all over that page and can't figure out where else they can be. Is it supposed to be in the Challenge Details box? If so there are no boxes to check.

ZENRYAKU, Not all the videos for the challenge have a printable version. I believe only Day 3 & 7 have printable versions available. If you can't watch the videos I would suggest substituting another SparkPeople video that does have a printable version. Here is a link to all of the SparkPeople videos.

www.sparkpeople.com/resource/videos.

Try and substitute with another video that works the same muscle group as the challenge video and if that isn't possible just make sure that you're not working the same group of muscles two days in a row. Hope this helps!

WIIMII9726, I am not sure why you are unable to check off the boxes. Can you put a check mark in any of the boxes for the weeks you have completed or are they all not working? In any event as long as you are getting the required fitness minutes in and tracking your workouts in your fitness tracker you will be eligible for prizes.

I am on holiday and the wifi is unreliable. Are there printable demo of each of the videos? Specifically, I need these for the next three days:

I'm in Week 3, and up to Day 2 video and looked for the printable version without success.

I found Day 3 Video: Upper Body Sculpt with Chair which I wll do today instead. Are there any other printable demo of the week's videos.

Although I am up to Week 3, I cannot do the exercises from memory.

I still cannot put a check mark by the wk's that I have completed. I have tried different things and all it does is open up a new window! Any other ideas let me know. Everything has been recorded in my Fitness Tracker and of course I go to the team discussion board.

GWINEVEVE301, I see that you have a video listed today in your tracker, but other than that it looks like you haven't tracked any of the other videos. I would go back and add the videos to the days that you did them. You can do this manually by changing the date in your fitness tracker and then searching for the videos in the search bar. Hope that answers your question!

MCFITZ2, You will have to go back and add the video manually in your tracker under yesterday's date. Go to the tracker and change it to yesterday's date, then search for the video and add it to your tracker. Hope that helps!

Hi
. I have been tracking my exercise min, but yesterday was too tired to enter them. I went back and entered them on my tracker page today. I also have added the team goals in "track other goals". With it being a new week I can't figure out how to go back and add them to yesterday. Any suggestions?
Thanks Macye

Hi Nickycrane - I'm not sure what DVD you are referencing. All the videos for this challenge can be found online. On the team page click the link to complete the week three challenge and it will take you to the page describing the challenges for week. We are repeating the same videos from last week and increasing the cardio challenge by 10 minutes.

Hope that helps! Good job making it through the first two weeks. Congratulations on your fitness minutes.

I'm in Albania and don't have access to body sculpting DVD for next week. What workouts could I do instead?

SSATURN81 - You don't have to do the extra video, but you can if you would like. Week's 3 plan says to "Amp up your cardio. Can you add another 10 minutes to some of your cardio workouts this week? How about increasing the intensity with some intervals, hills or sprints? This week's challenge is to take your cardio to the next level by increasing your time, duration or even adding an extra session to your week. Because cardio blasts fat, this step will help you uncover those newly toned muscles." If swimming is more intense for you, then that is a great choice. or if you want to continue walking, you can add hills into your route or time onto your walks or even do a faster pace. It is your choice on how you want to do that.

BLUEBONNETT - There are only 4 weeks of prizes. Tomorrow I will draw the prizes for week 2, so anyone that is a member of the team, is a US citizen and has logged at least 200 fitness minutes in their fitness tracker will be eligible for the prize drawing tomorrow and for the last 2 weeks of prizes. The final prize will be drawn with the week 4 winners, but you must have logged at least 500 fitness minutes for the month of January to be eligible for that prize.

For the week 3 challenge are we still doing the extra video along with 10minutes more on cardio (or intensity)? And if i change my cardio workouts from walking and wii boxing to swimming and wii boxing would that be an increase in my cardio to satisfy the challenge?

I just joined the challenge. As for the prizes...do they recycle each week for the week you are in? Are prizes awarded every week for weeks one through four? I didn't win for week one. Does that mean I will be eligible for week two?
