I hope your test goes well Chellie! Happy for you that you got your clearance to test. emoticon

We do a lot of throws and (upper ranks) weapons, it can be intense and it's fun!

I may not be there yet but I'm closer than I was yesterday.

I got tired of starting over and working back to where I was, so I have stopped giving up!

Hi, ladies. What a week!

Finally had my hand x-rayed. Film was inconclusive for a break, but definitely showed a lot of swelling. Orders were to rest the hand for two weeks and then start PT if pain persisted. Um, I can bag on knuckle push ups for a while, but absolute resting of the hand isn't going to happen. I have a belt test (1st phase) tomorrow. Have to break with a palm strike.

Also had a curious little growth on my leg looked at. I've ignored it for several months because my priority was the first degree belt. Turned out to be some sort of rogue mole-y thing. Doc took it out right there in the office, gave my 7 stitches and told me no TKD for two weeks. I asked to negotiate that because of the belt test. He asked if there would be contact sparring. I told him no and he cleared me to test. Whew!

We're doing a lot with knife self-defense and throws now, too. It's a whole lot more fast and furious than any sd prior to this. It's very challenging to me, but also fun when I get the right training partner.

Eponine: I feel you on the class-as-antidepressant. I got off my meds shortly after starting TKD because of the incredible lift I get from focusing and working that hard. I also got a light therapy lamp that I use every morning from late September through mid-May. Hope you can get back to normal class soon and keep those blues away!

Happy Friday!

Chellie

This week I've had to learn about accepting limitations. A few weeks ago, my right elbow got twisted, and it's still achy because I haven't really given it a break. My left knee started acting up late last week, and there's a knot in my back that won't go away and affects my left hip sometimes. None of them are actively painful (well, the elbow can be if I'm not careful) but they've all finally added up to a point where I have to admit that continuing to train like I normally do would be foolish, and risk injuring myself seriously enough that I would be sidelined for weeks instead of a few days to give myself a chance to rest.

The thing is that taekwondo is how I medicate myself for depression and anxiety. Taking time off from class is like missing a dose of medication. But I have to take care of myself physically as well as mentally. It's just hard to find the balance.

At least my instructor gets me. At the end of class, he came over to me as I was going through my form (cooling-down speed) and said, "Here. We'll finish it today, so that you won't feel like you're missing anything and can rest in peace." And taught me the last couple of moves of the form.

And the thing is? It DOES make me feel better. Now I know taking an extra day or two off won't put me behind, and so I will be able to take the time off more mentally at peace.

Now I just hope that not going back until Tuesday is long enough to allow my body to work some of its issues out.

Thanks for checking in Hanne!
Ari, I'm sorry your class keeps getting canceled, hopefully your Sensei feels better by now or here very soon.
Our class went great today, kids class on one side, adults on the other. Our largest ever classes had more than 20 adults and we almost beat that, would have if we counted the kids, very busy night but so much fun! It's incredible how well Sensei Sc ran the adults, including 6 white belts that had never trained before, while Sensei R ran the kids class. We did wrist technique right into throw, to pin. The upper ranks worked the same things but more complex. Our wrist techniques involved uke resisting, the throws had to be an actual throw, not make uke fall from pain. When we pinned, had to do so in 3 moves or less and we got to decide what we did instead of sticking to core skills. After the kids left we did kata and then ground work, ne waza and for our advanced class, knife skills.
I feel so tired and so accomplished emoticon

One of the kids in the class is my niece, she's the one in the picture I shared.

I may not be there yet but I'm closer than I was yesterday.

I got tired of starting over and working back to where I was, so I have stopped giving up!

The advantage of being in a small one-teacher Dojo is that you get lots of personal attention from the head Sensei. The disadvantage of being part of a small one-Sensei dojo is that if he can't be there, then class gets cancelled. So we've struck out twice this week.

I went on Monday to find that Sensei had a personal conflict and the adult class was cancelled, but I'd missed the email telling so.

Showed up on Tuesday for kids class to find a sign on the door saying that Sensei had gotten hurt, check facebook to see if there would be class Wednesday and Thursday. Hopefully by Thursday he'll be feeling better.

Ari

I'm taking a break for a few weeks, travelling in Germany. Did some sit-ups and push-ups this am - oy veh! At least I'm walking a lot; hope that will keep me in reasonable shape. The place I am staying at has a "pool" - more like a goldfish bowl so no dice there. Oh well, back for more punishment on the 28th...

Hope everybody is having a good week!

Class last night was great, big class with lots of white and yellow belts and Sensei touched on knives which was unusual since we don't begin weapons until green to brown III. It worked out, we all had a great time. From basic knives we went to throws and tore 2 of them apart, conveniently they are the 2 that I need the most work on to promote emoticon .
Tomorrow night is kids class followed by advanced class, which has been going great. I covered a tournament this weekend and saw one 4 year old and two 5 year olds perform pinan 2 synchronized, cutest thing ever and if kids that young can learn kata, I'm sure that our 8 and 9 year olds can.
This Saturday I don't work at all but the next week, the weekend we test, I am working emoticon as well as every weekend in June. I staggered the events I agreed to cover so I will only miss 2 Saturdays in class but it really is my favorite class of the week, it's hard not to feel down when I miss it.
Hope everyone is doing well!

I may not be there yet but I'm closer than I was yesterday.

How did everyone's weekend go?
I had a good class yesterday, spent today covering a Karate tournament, not a bad time at all.
Have a great week ladies!
