Class was great as usual!
One minor miss-communication with Sensei C but I think in time I'll be able to communicate better.
I arrived early and worked jo-staff kata with Y and reviewed basic knife skills. Class itself was a little unusual, Sensei R had us do a yoga style warm up. My body does not like many of the poses but I modified them, and then we worked bon-ki. Using the moves in the kata to 'real' scenarios. My partner is a new green belt that has missed a lot of class in the last couple months so he had to quickly 'relearn' a few moves of 2 of his kata, not a big deal. He is a great uke, falls and throws well so my bon-ki looked great emoticon

I may not be there yet but I'm closer than I was yesterday.

I got tired of starting over and working back to where I was, so I have stopped giving up!

Joy, I'm glad you had a fun class and hope your shins aren't to bruised up! Karate in the park is wonderful but as ARIANERA said, watch your footing! My worst joint injury (unless you count my back injury) was from a park trip. My foot caught in a small hole and when the rest of me rotated, it stayed. Ouch!

ARIANERA,it's good to see you post emoticon I'm happy for you that you have been making it to class and congratulations on the old gi fitting so well, way to go!

DETERMINEDGREEN, I'm glad you are settling into your new gym, and I've noticed the same link between appetite and working out more. After really tracking my hunger levels against my work outs, I saw the most spiking in heavy cardio days, lesser in 'class' days and very little change, if any, on days I do light cardio and then resistance training circuit style. Play with it and see what works best for you.

I had a great class tonight, was a perfect mash up with a bit of everything. Sensei R went to kids class on one side and Sensei St worked with the adults. We had 2 brand new to class, first time ever white belts and Sensei St had the brown belts cycle with them. I worked with them first on blocks and stances while Sensei worked with the other colored belts, then I moved in with the group and another brown took over with the newbies. All in all, 2 hours later I worked basic self defense, advanced self defense, advanced throws, basic ground and grappling, advanced grappling and kata. I will feel it tomorrow! Hope the morning is great for all!

Karate outside sounds like fun!

This week in our classes, we learned how to defend ourselves from a seated position and a second method of defense if you are in bed when attacked. We also did a lot of stick work and some knife stuff (a la Filipino Combat Systems). Our instructor covered some information about rope/cord strangulation and we worked on an escape/disarm.

Then we reviewed a number of basic moves. I think our instructor wants us to look sharp in June when a visiting FCS instructor will be doing a seminar.

This is my second week at the gym. Starting to settle in a little bit. The meeting with the personal trainer is tomorrow. I have plenty of questions for him. I noticed a bit of a kink starting up in my right delt and biceps. Had dh do a bit of massage for me on it and slathered on some BioFreeze. It feels better right now. I plan to ask the trainer whether bad form or too much weight were the more likely culprits.

I am trying to control my eating, but working out seems to enhance my appetite. It is a fine line to walk - trying to eat enough protein for strength building but also trying to lose weight. So far, so good. I am down about 6.5 lb. so far, and we are only doing a very little bit of cardio to warm up and then 20 minutes on the treadmill to loosen up after the weight machines. The drive still seems long, but I am hoping I will get used to it soon.

Strive for peace, hope and perseverance.

Be an ordinary person doing extraordinary things!!!

Karate outside can be fun, but you really have to watch your footing. I'm pretty sure that my original knee injury when I was 17 (torn meniscus) came from pivoting badly when doing karate outside at a women's martial arts weekend. I didn't feel anything during that specific seminar, but came home from that weekend with a sore knee.

I actually made it to adult class for the first time in months! And chess club is finished, so my kids are back up to twice a week karate. So I'm sore after two days in a row. What's even more amazing is that I found my old heavyweight gi from 20+ years ago, and it's still wearable. Granted it has generous drawstring pants, but it's still a victory that it fits my post-childbearing body.

Sensei had a training session with a soccer player immediately before the kids class, and was running a little bit late. So, I just started class. There were only 6 students, my younger son (yellow belt), my older son (high orange), K another high orange and 3 brand new white belts. So I focused on our basic block set, but took the time to try to improve the form of the higher belts. Sensei came out at that point and took the class from there.

Wow! Karate in the park sounds like so much fun! I will suggest that activity to my Sensei! Hi Christy! Great to hear your family is training together - good luck at the tournament!

Great class tonight. I got to lead the warm up. It's probably the first time I did the whole routine in the correct order - yay!! After that, the sempais got to try our stances. They were told to check our stances and try to knock us off balance while we did our katas very slowly, one move at a time. We got through 4 forms-up to Taeguek 3 - ugh! Being the highest rank in class, and on the point, I had a black belt assigned to me, alone. She seemed to enjoy kicking my shins the whole time. She probably perceived that kicks to the shin affected not only my balance, but also my ability to focus...ow. But, it was a fun class!

Expect problems and eat them for breakfast.

I love working out outdoors! Our dojo has an annual outdoor workout and picnic at a local park, which is always a lot of fun. It's also a great workout, since it's longer than a typical class, and we get to work nearly all of our empty hand katas and several of our weapons katas (and actually get to do the sai throws in the sai katas). My husband and I have also taken a couple of trips with people from the dojo to Hawaii, and early every morning we did a workout on the beach. The sand and surf defnitely add an additional challenge to running kata and wazas!

Our semi-annual school tournament is this Saturday. We've been doing a lot of tournament preparation in class for the last couple of weeks. This will be my son's first tournament, so I'm looking forward to seeing how he does. I'll be judging most of the day, but hopefully I'll be able to get off of the board to watch my son compete.

I hope everyone has a great week!

Thanks for the congratulations, guys! I have to figure out where to put my medals - right now the ones from last year are on my bulletin board but if I put these up there as well, there won't be any room for anything else!

We don't train outdoors; my dojang is in kind of an industrial-ish area... there's no grass anywhere nearby! One of my classmates said she was practicing her form outside, and wishing her neighbors wouldn't watch her. lol

This week we'll be returning to regular curriculum now that the tournament is over, which means I'll finally start really learning all my new red belt stuff. I'm a little bit nervous, honestly, although I'm not sure why. I'm sure it'll be fine.

May! Already?!

Bring on the spring time sunshine, woo hoo!!!
On a martial note...who trains outdoors? We've done kata and self defense in the park before, it's so peaceful and energizing at the same time, loved it. Soon our dojo will be doing outings, dojo hikes, bike trips, etc and I'm really hoping that I won't be working for at least some of them.

So far, I'm covering a lot of events and there are more that need folks to sign up. Part of what hurt my employer/brother was contractors not paying us but another part was overtime. He took pity on folks that are desperately clinging to every chance of making money so they can make the ends meet (like me) and let them cover double shifts. I would rather take 6 hour day instead of 11 and lose the overtime, but still have a paycheck coming. My brother is allowing me to help with collections and he's agreed to distribute shifts so no one gets OT.

All in all, today is a day of optimism and cheer, I fully intend to carry it through my week, who else wants to rule it this week?!

Lets go team!!!

I may not be there yet but I'm closer than I was yesterday.

I got tired of starting over and working back to where I was, so I have stopped giving up!
