@ Joy, thank you emoticon

I may not be there yet but I'm closer than I was yesterday.

I got tired of starting over and working back to where I was, so I have stopped giving up!

3 gold medals is still 3 gold medals, way to go!!!
I have been kicked in the face, as well as slapped, punched, knee'd and elbowed...it's never fun!
I'm impressed that you competed above your division, that's great too. When you compete or demonstrate or whatever, hearing a 'whoa' from the audience is always fabulous! I'm thrilled it went so well emoticon

Wow! Ann, sorry about your health issues! We have a guy who comes to black belt class and uses a wheelchair - he's a 5th degree. You should see what that guy has learned to do to defend himself in that thing - whew! Keep on adapting!

Congrats on the tournament! Those trophies will look great on display! Since you were the only one in your class to even show up, you DO deserve to get some recognition!!

I took 3 classes today - spar, advanced class, and master weapons. I think I'm actually getting the hang of the sword forms! Now, the bokken stuff, I'm just not going to discuss... Spar class - won a match, lost a match. Had fun both times! Advanced class - I requested to work on curriculum review...so much to remember! Yikes!

Glad everyone had a good week!

Expect problems and eat them for breakfast.

Tournament Report!

The short version is: I did awesome! I got gold in all three things I competed in!

The longer version is that I got gold in my form, but there was only one other competitor, so... maybe not that impressive. But I know I did the form well, so I'm pleased nonetheless.

I did my back kick through two boards, and I did it on the first try, like it was nothing. And I swear I heard someone say, "Whoa!" when I did it. LOL

Sparring... well, I got gold but I lost my match. Which probably doesn't make sense, but I guess they gave me gold because technically I was in a forfeit division - there was no one actually in my division for me to compete against so I won by default. I was competing up a division, so if I'd won, I would have gotten gold and my opponent would have gotten silver (which happened with one of the other people from my dojang - she's a high green belt and she beat a black belt!) but since she beat me, we both got gold. Or something. I'm not sure I understand it.

Really, I think I got the medal out of pity, because I got kicked in the face. Luckily not in the nose, because that would probably have been very bloody and might have ended with a trip to the hospital to make sure it wasn't broken. But for the record? Being kicked in the face isn't fun.

The axe kick-back kick combination would be the middle ground, since doing multiple breaks (even if each is through a single board) is more complicated than doing a single break through a single board.

What's a bit frustrating about it is that I really didn't get a chance to try doing the two boards last night, because we only had one person who could hold, and usually for power breaks you have two people holding, and I don't trust this guy to hold properly to begin with. So I was basically defeated before I started last night. If I'd had two people to hold and more confidence in the holders, I might have done it, and then I wouldn't even be asking myself this.

At this point I figure I'm going to just have to make the decision tomorrow morning when I get there and see how I feel. It's just nerve-wracking, going in and not knowing what I'm going to do.

ETERNALEPONINE, is there a middle ground? Do you have a kick or combination of kicks that are moderately difficult and a challenge but you feel more confident?
From the view point of having a back ground in martial arts and watching the tournaments as an EMT, it's obvious when the confidence isn't there. The skills may be more difficult but even if it's not perfect, when the competitor goes in knowing they can do it, they usually do.

We have our annual tournament on Saturday, and I'm nervous. I know my form is solid, and as long as I keep my balance on my last move, I should be all right. (Front kick into a sort of hop and landing in cross stance is NOT as easy as it looks... and it doesn't look easy. *g*)

I found out that for sparring the only person they have for me to go up against is a high brown belt, which is three belts above me, so I'm expecting to get my butt kicked, although my instructor says he thinks it will be a good match.

It's breaking that I'm really worried about, though. I don't know what I'm going to do. I had planned to a back kick through two boards, but I'm not sure I'm consistent enough with it to do it. I've only done it once on the first try. The alternative, that I practiced today, was doing an axe kick followed by a back kick. It's not a power break, but it still shows off my skills, and it's definitely easier for me to be sure that I'll pull it off.

So the question is, which is better? To try something harder and fail, or to do something easier and nail it? *sigh*

Class was a lot of fun last night. Our kids class had 8 show, half of which are my coworkers' kids and Sensei took them into the front part of the dojo for their hour class while the senior students (brown belts) worked with the other adults in the back area. Mostly it went really well, each of the senior students was given an assignment for warm ups, standing basics, moving basics, etc and the other brown III must have thought Sensei wanted him to do twice the work, since he ran through moving basics (my assignment) and self defence (his assignment). The self defense that our Brown I chose to work were advanced, 2 of the students need the green to brown III core but the other 8 struggled to keep up. After a bit of that I spoke to R and she agreed to move to throws, we worked a couple that are lower in complexity until the kids class ended.

Once Sensei bowed out the kids and said good bye to the parents he kicked up the intensity for us, we broke into groups for level appropriate throws. When class end came around it seemed like we'd worked 5 minutes, not 30+ and the 30 minutes advanced training after 'regular' class flew by just as fast. I was so tired but amped from a great time so it was tough falling asleep last night.

I may have mentioned it earlier, I have Crohn's disease and it's lead to arthritis in my feet and ankles. A podiatrist gave me some braces to wear in class to ease the stress on my feet and last night was the first time I tried them out. I had almost no pain at all, and previously was being woken up at night from the pain, so I'm guessing they are what I needed. They are going to take some getting used to, since I can't bend and flex my ankles nearly as much balance is tricky.

Hope everyone is doing well!

LOL!!! My daughter and I love Goodwill! My first job was at a consignment store! I actually stopped at GW yesterday and picked up a pair of jeans. I'm losing weight again, and shrinking out of all my clothes! I bought a smaller size karate shirt from the dojo last night, too - yay!

Class was line drills last night. Not my favorite, but the attendance was relatively huge. It was better than tripping on the little guys had we done some other kind of activity...

Sounds like everyone's week is going better than last week. Thank goodness!

Dd and I went to the gym for the first time today. It is one of the Planet Fitness franchises. Not perfect, but better than the much more expensive alternatives that are even farther away from my home. I liked it pretty well. Right now it seems like there is so much to learn, but I know that we will soon get comfortable with it and it will seem normal.

Then we went to the Goodwill to buy some cheap workout shirts. I had such fun chosing T-shirts with goofy stuff on them. I mean, who can turn down a shirt that says, "It's always a great day in Chicken, Alaska!"? When they get too terribly faded or get a hole, we can recycle them into rags and not feel a bit bad.

@ determinedgreen: LOL! I told my daughter she wasn't allowed to go to college until she made Black rank - fortunately she was very close! That was four years ago. In a couple months she is marrying a very kind, considerate, and brave young man! Sounds like you're raising your own daughter right!

Well my concert was yesterday (and went well) and I was all set to start going to adult class once a week now that I have fewer rehearsals. But I ended up going to the first of 2 condolence calls tonight instead. Ah well. There's always next week.

I was too busy to reply to the "what belt system does your school use" discussion a few weeks ago. The school I am at now doesn't have a direct correlation between the color of the belt and the kyu system. There are more than 10 belts and they aren't equally distributed. Sensei has explained why he does it this way, with multiple belts associated with 6th kyu, but it's definitely not intuitive.

White
Orange - 10th kyu
High orange - 9th kyu
Yellow - 8th kyu
High yellow - 7th kyu
Green - 6th kyu
High Green - 6th kyu
Blue - 6th kyu
High Blue - 6th kyu
Purple - 5th kyu
High Purple - 4th kyu
Brown I - 3rd kyu
Brown II - 2nd kyu
Brown III - 1st kyu
Jr. Blackbelt (if younger than 14)

We had a surprise visit from Sensei Craig on Friday. He is the guy who started our club but about 8 years ago he moved to the Okanagan, a 4h drive over the mountains. He's a 4th dan (our style has 5) so it's always great to get his take on how we're doing.

Today was fun; we started out with Horse stance tag which is a pretty energetic game. For basics we did a lot of punching drills and after the break we worked with focus pads for kicking. LOL - my partner was a 12 yr old orange belt and Sensei Brent kept telling him "don't hurt her". He was being funny, but the poor kid got seriously worried. I told him to go ahead and kick as hard as he can. Maybe in a few years I won't tell him that - looking at our 17 yr old black belt who sends focus pads flying across the dojo with his kicks emoticon

In weapons we worked on our Bo Shodan bunkai - haven't done that in a while, but once the rust was removed it went pretty well. I'm happy Josh was willing to give it a try. He is very good at karate but since he is still quite short he used to be a bit timid around the weapons. He's got a lot more confidence now and he makes a good partner.

Have a wonderful week everybody!

Hi, ladies,

Relaxing with a glass of wine and winding down from a busy day and evening at church.
Bag is packed and I'm ready for class tomorrow night. Need to tighten up my knife self-defense and I think I will be eligible to test in a couple of weeks.

From now until second degree, I test for phases. Each new phase is awarded by a stripe of yellow tape around the belt. I am hoping my new belt comes soon. They ordered the wrong size and the thing hangs below my knee caps. Needless to say, it is uncomfortable and dangerous. Wrapping the tails around the belt to shorten it up is a short-term fix, but not one I want to deal with for the next 2-3 years. *sigh*

Have a good night, all.

Chellie

Change is hard. Be persistent.

Scale wasn't as good as I had hoped this week. I got off track Saturday night when I ate too much salty and fatty munchy junk while watching the UFC fights. I was kind of surprised to see Benson Henderson worrying more about keeping his hair out of his eyes than he was about delivering punches. I've heard a lot of people say they thought Melendez won that one. I also liked seeing Diaz get a comeuppance. I don't like to see fighters that taunt others or prance around mouthing off at their opponent - have a little class, dude! Thompson may be my new favorite MMA guy. I don't train MMA, but I do learn a lot from watching it about what does and doesn't work.

Also yesterday we spent all day at the shotgun range. The parents had to learn how to score a match and my 14yo daughter shot a round of skeet and beat both her father and the team captain. Poor thing, with martial arts and shooting sports, very few young men will have the nerve to ever ask her out. emoticon .

Tomorrow we have class, then Tuesday will be the first day at the new gym. I am excited! Here's hoping for a great week for all.

Strive for peace, hope and perseverance.

We had a great class yesterday, Sensei played a lot of games to help us prepare for the kids class that starts on Wednesday. That class is for 8-15 year olds and will be once a week, Wednesdays from 7-8pm. Also starting this week, brown belts and above can stay an extra 30 minutes, for a 2 hour class with the last 30 minutes dedicated to advanced skills.

I'm pretty sore today so will be taking it easy, hope every one is having a great day!

I may not be there yet but I'm closer than I was yesterday.
