Wow, thanks for the lesson emoticon

I've seen artists in their 50's and 60's, so don't sell yourself short!

I may not be there yet but I'm closer than I was yesterday.

I got tired of starting over and working back to where I was, so I have stopped giving up!

We have many more ranks so testing is a bit faster, but it does depend upon the student's readiness. Having form, technique, and oral material down are often not enough to make the recommended testing list. Same as your school, we must show growth mentally and emotionally as well as physically. Master butts heads with a lot of parents over that issue, but he usually prevails when he wants to hold a student back for an additional 6-12 weeks so that they may grow in all areas and be a more well-rounded martial artist.

For little ninjas, students ages 3-6, it goes: white, yellow, orange, green, purple, blue, brown, red, black. Once they graduate from Little Ninjas, they go to regular yellow belt.

For children ages 7 and up and adult it goes: white, yellow, green stripe (a yellow belt with a piece of green electrical tape wrapped around one end), green, blue stripe, blue, red stripe, red, black stripe, cho dan bo, temporary black, first degree black. From first degree, there are 6 or 7 phases until second degree. It takes 2-3 years to make first degree, 3 years to make second, 3-4 to make third degree and so on. There are nine degrees in Tae Kwon Do. I will probably not make it beyond 5th or 6th degree simply due to my current age and the amount of years I can reasonably expect my body to keep up with the physical demands of the sport.

Change is hard. Be persistent.

Adults have the ranks of white, yellow, blue, green, brown III, brown II and brown I before black. Beneath black we test twice a year, once we get black I we can test only once a year at nationals (so we have to travel out of state). Most students get to brown III in about 3 years, advance one rank a year until black and then we are not eligible to test for (I think) 2 years, it may be longer. Our curriculum has a lot of material between levels and growing mentally and emotionally as well as physically is expected, so progression in rank may be slow but we progress in skill as fast as we are able to.
When I trained in Kenpo we advanced as fast as we could memorize the techniques and forms, and pay testing fees. I was high ranking fast but terrible as a martial artist emoticon
Shoshin Ryu works much better for me emoticon

Hi, Ann,

Bummed for you that May testing won't work out for you. How many ranks are there for you guys? Do you test more frequently at lower ranks or is it only once or twice a year for everyone? That would frustrate the beans out of me. The longest I was at any rank was temporary black. I achieved it in October of last year. Degree testing is only offered twice a year. So I tested in February but then the Tea Ceremony did not happen until this month. So I wore that stinkin' belt for about 6 months.

Glad you got to cover a tournament. I love watching them and running a ring as a judge. I have a love/hate relationship with competing, though.

Instead of making it to class today I ended up covering a Karate tournament, lots of fun! The forms are so close to ours, their weapon kata are the same, and the spirit was wonderful. Loved it!

Bad news emoticon

Due to instructor availability, our belt test was pushed back one week. Our dojo tests only twice a year and the next belt test is now on the one Saturday in May that I can not possibly make it!
No!!!
I won't be able to test again until December, even though most of us are at my rank for no less than 1 year before promoting, I was looking forward to the testing experience. I was awarded brown III in December of last year, it's extremely unlikely that I would have promoted but I feel like I'm missing out.
Sigh

Last night's class was great. We had a couple white belts, a couple yellow belts, 1 green belt and 5 brown belts so most of class was tailored to techniques and skills we (brown belts) need. The lower ranks were able to work things they need and are appropriate for their skill level too, it worked out really well.

Joy, that's wonderful to hear. Thank you emoticon

I'm looking forward to class tomorrow...should have a larger class and a couple more black belt instructors, so we can work more rank specific material.
Have a great day tomorrow ladies!

Wow! My oldest son has had 4 hip surgeries - the last one was a total hip replacement on one side. He'll need the other one done some time in the near future. He got his care at a pediatric hospital until he had to have the hip replacement done at age 20.

The medical staff that work with kids are absolutely amazing! I couldn't do it - seeing the other kids in the hospital during my son's stays was heartbreaking!

Thank you so much for what you do! You must have some real inner strength along with that soft heart!

BTW - my son is now second degree black belt instructor at our school. The new hip is wonderful! Now his kicks just hurt everyone else! -jk-

23kaiya, I understand. My husband worked for 10 years at a regional children's hospital that only got the most desperate cases. He saw many of his young friends pass on. I can certainly understand why so many health care professionals have difficulty getting close to people, due to all the loss that they experience.

My prayers for you and the family.

50 lbs in 8 months is just over a pound a week, decent goal!
I've not tried the type of schedule you are looking at, but it sounds like a strong idea. 6 weeks is a long time, if I were to try this sort of thing I may start with 2 weeks at a time, or 3.
Let us know how it works for you! This is a learning process for all of us.

Today I made it to class, and considering the day I had, that's huge. Most that know me are aware I work in a pediatrics clinic and see a lot of high needs, chronically ill babies and children. With the young, when they crash they go hard and fast. Today a sweet heart we've been seeing for the 20 months he's been on this earth crashed. I adore this baby, and he has a laundry list of medical problems, came in with fever and difficulty breathing and about 10 minutes later was not breathing on his own and even with oxygen we couldn't get his 02 up. Needless to say, I cried most of this evening, finally getting the water works to stop about 25 minutes before class. I showed up with tear streaks and am very great full that my instructors and class mates know me well enough to know that when I want to talk, I will. We had a good class, I got a hard work out, and I should be able to sleep without more tears.

I hope everyone is doing well and had a decent enough Monday, and I'm really glad this Monday is about over!

I'm suffering from that post testing malaise of not wanting to do much of anything. I kind of coasted tonight and my head wasn't really in the game. I want to get going on that periodization program, but now need to search for a gym where I can do some strength training that isn't 35 miles from my home, one way.

After talking with a few people, I have decided to do 6 wks focusing really hard on the strength, 6 on the cardio, 6 on technique, and then repeat the cycle. That should take me all the way up to the time of my next belt test. I should be able to make some decent progress in a 6 week period without reaching the point of overtraining. And, of course, these divisions aren't exclusive, since I will also be doing the other 2, just at a lesser intensity.

And comments or critique? I'd welcome your input since this is the first time I am trying this type of a training program. I also hope to lose around 50 lb during this next 8 or so months.

Strive for peace, hope and perseverance.

Hi ladies, new week, new possibilities emoticon How's everyone's weekend going so far? We're having a great day in my house, healthy breakfast casserole (with left overs for the week) going to hit the gym with my niece then over to my brothers to watch 'Brave'. I miss my class mates, and I'm already looking forward to class tomorrow night. I will miss next Saturday and then the last Saturday of the month, but hopefully I'll make every other class.
Have a great day!
