That's a good picture of you! Since we do a lot of grappling at my school, I don't have any problems with any of the positions, even full mount. I got to cover a Tae Kwon Do tournament today, there were some incredible athletes competing and it was a lot of fun.
I am really looking forward to class Monday, missing 2 in a row and I feel really 'off'. emoticon

Hope everyone is having a great weekend!

I may not be there yet but I'm closer than I was yesterday.

I got tired of starting over and working back to where I was, so I have stopped giving up!

Photos from the tea ceremony are slowly making their way onto Facebook. My profile photo is a pretty good one of me. I'm pouring tea for Master. I'm not a big tea drinker, but this was a good brew.

Double-header classes this morning. We got to do grappling, which I love, but we started out in a full mount position, which I don't love. Fortunately, I got to work with a girl with whom I am comfortable and have a big trust factor so we were able to get past the relative embarrassment of sitting on each other and holding each other down quickly and get on to learning both the holds and the escapes.

No class for me tonight. It will be a heavy sparring night and I just don't have the energy. Plus I don't want to risk injury one day before my tea ceremony.

The good news is that I'm within a pound and a half of my goal. I wanted to be there by Friday, but I'm okay working another week to accomplish it.

Saturday will be family class and black belt club, so I'll be working and sweating a-plenty!

Tae Kwon Do is an amazing form, one I wanted to train in for years. I love the school I'm in so if I did join a Tae Kwon Do school, it would be in addition to my Jujutsu classes.

I may not be there yet but I'm closer than I was yesterday.

I got tired of starting over and working back to where I was, so I have stopped giving up!

GoForIt50 - Don't forget Korean! ;-) (Tae Kwon Do is the traditional Korean martial which literally means the art of fist and foot fighting... does that sound like I had to memorize it? Because I did. LOL)

Ann - I'll be getting my black belt in a year or so, and a new uniform with it, so I'm trying to get by on the two I have. But I was noticing again today how very Not White my main uniform is. It'll be a mercy when I retire it. *g*

Chellie - My friend's school has a similar Black Belt Club. I don't know that they restrict other students on the number of classes they can attend, but there are special Black Belt Club only classes, which I'm pretty sure includes weapons class. Their special uniform is a royal blue top and white pants with blue stripes down the side. It was really funny when my friend was a blue belt, because it was the EXACT same shade of blue, so her belt just blended in to her uniform.

No fun Chellie! I've had that only a few times but if it was a 'darned if you do, darned if you don't' situation.
Have fun with the water park! We have one here in Alaska and it's not good, more than half their customers get treated for skin troubles and I've seen several with fungal pneumonia (yuck!). Since they are the only one in the state, they get away with a lot, the ones I've seen when I've been 'in the states' to see family have all been great.

I may not be there yet but I'm closer than I was yesterday.

Uniform talk. Cool!

We wear white until and unless we are invited to join Black Belt Club. BBC is for those students, kids and adults alike, who have demonstrated a seriousness about their martial art and who will very likely achieve black belt someday. We are bound by a longer term contract, but the monthly fees are considerably lower and there are breaks in testing fees and special events. BBC members also get to attend as many classes per week as they wish. Non-BBC members are limited to two classes per week.

BBC members have the option of wearing a black uniform. I find it very stiff and uncomfortable material. I reserve it for belt ceremonies. We also have a white uniform with a black collar that is reserved for black belts. I received mine as a junior black belt, but didn't wear it until black. I just have such immense respect for the belt and what went into achieving it.

Classes resume today for us, but we've decided to take the girls on a mini vacation to Key Lime Cove, an indoor water park in the Chicago, IL area. We are in Milwaukee, WI, so it'll only be about an hour away. Great getaway without breaking the bank.

Looking forward to swimming and playing in a warm environment.

Chellie

Oh, Easter went well. But my mom made too many potatoes and too few green beans. I had ham and about 5 beans. I actually woke up in the middle of the night so hungry that I couldn't get back to sleep. Awful.

Alicia, that's interesting. I thought we were a bit strict but I will keep that in mind next time I feel the urge to pout about a straight up white gi. emoticon
Eternal- ick! I have tossed out a few that were really gross, so I know what you mean emoticon

We have a student (in his 50's) from Japan, he came over about 10 years ago and still has a very heavy accent. When we test it's very formal and most of what we are told to do is strictly in Japanese. He gets tested in English, only time I hear our instructors use just English, it's kind of funny.
Since we do a lot of ground work most of us wear a heavy or mid weight gi, some even have the judo gi. The thicker material does get warm faster but it's nice to have the extra when someone pulls you into a throw (less chance of a wardrobe malfunction and something tearing) or when we are rolling around in ground work.
I agree that they do resemble upholstery fabric though emoticon

I have been wearing a black, medium weight karate gi (8oz, I think) since the very first day. However, that is cheating a bit since our instructor prefers us to wear the black judo style, heavy weight gis. I think they look like thick upholstery fabric! I struggle with getting easily overheated and I am holding off until the last possible moment on getting one of these.

It amuses me to see how different each of the disciplines is. Before I started, I just assumed that everyone had the same clothing, same belt color progression, that a certain color of belt meant the same skills to every one, and that a black belt meant you knew it all. Now, I see or hear of all the patches and stripes, etc. and feel like a bit of a Plain Jane. We only have black gis, no patches, no stripes. And some of our students don't even choose to test. (Although they all seem to be sheriffs or policemen, so maybe it is an LE thing not to test.)

I am also ever so impressed by all your Japanese or Chinese words, even the title you give your instructor. We just call ours by his first name and his chosen title is our instructor, not our sensei or some other cool word. In the upper belts, we do get a few Filipino Combat Systems words, but other than that, it is just run of the mill English.

Strive for peace, hope and perseverance.

We are also only allowed to wear white until black belt, and then our dobok is white with a black collar. At my friend's school, they are allowed to wear black once they hit fourth degree (master).

I have one dobok that I wear all the time, which is not so white anymore, but has all of my patches for attendance on it... and then a second one which I don't wear nearly as much, which is still crisp and white. I save that one for testing and such. (Or if the first one gets too gross to wear again. lol)

Only black belts are allowed (in Shoshin) to wear anything but white. Since we do about 50% of our work on the ground, we make sure mats are well cleaned before hand. I have 2 more levels of brown to get through, so about 2.5 years, and I plan to get 1 black and at least 1 blue or green.
Our Sensei, being a smart @ss, got a denim colored tie-dye after he got his black belt, since his sensei said he could have any color he wanted. emoticon
Now that he's senior most instructor, he's not nearly as smart @ssed as he once was though.

23kaiya, what color of gi do you wear? We've always worn black. I can't imagine how difficult it would be for me to keep one white. Even my black one usually looks a bit smudged, with all the mud, pet hair, sweat, etc.

Alicia, I am sorry you're sick, no fun!
GOFORIT50, I do the exact same thing! My dog loves the yolks and they are great for his coat, keeps him soft and glossy.
My eating plan slid to the side the entire weekend and I 'semi' balanced it by 2 crazy intense work outs Saturday and Sunday, I have class tonight too but then no class again until next Monday. My daughter's 16th birthday is Wednesday (will miss that class) and I am working the next 3 Saturdays.
To 'reward' myself for working so hard, I will be buying a new gi emoticon

Happy Easter!

We went to church, then to a holiday meal and visit with relatives. Where I trained in not letting comments about women not being good fighters press my buttons!

Not a stellar day for my eating plan, but it is only one day and then I will get back on track. The trick will be in not letting the left-over candy find its way to my mouth. I can manage the ham in moderation. And since I only like the whites of the hard-boiled eggs, I can gobble them with great abandon - which I do. I feed the yolks to the pets, who think they have won the lottery or something!

Happy Easter ladies!

What ever your views on this holiday, I hope today is a wonderful day for you and your loved ones!

Today my daughter and I are having a laid back morning, simple brunch and then large dinner with my other daughter and her husband joining us for (lean) ham, broiled potatoes and lots of veggies.
Is anyone training today?

I may not be there yet but I'm closer than I was yesterday.
