Congratulations on your new rank BriAnne! that's great!
Chellie, I've never had music in class but I know it would kick things up several notches.
Joy, I'm sorry you keep getting punched in the bicep, ouch!
Class today was fantastic. We worked some Jo-staff and sword kata the first hour then moved into a really intensive 'warm up' everyone of us felt beat when Sensei St was finished and that's when class actually started. We went from self defense to throws, worked several different throws at multiple levels, and the last 30+ minutes we took it to the floor, my favorite emoticon
We don't have speed or power in our hand to hand but grappling is another story and it's such a great work out, but since it's (for me) playing, I don't feel like I'm working out. Woo Hoo

I may not be there yet but I'm closer than I was yesterday.

I got tired of starting over and working back to where I was, so I have stopped giving up!

CHELLIEB - I love it when the instructors put on some music! I agree - it really motivates me, too. My son had had several hip surgeries on his way to second degree black belt and had to relearn all the forms in a seated position. He's an instructor, and gets chosen to work with students who have to modify their forms and drills for different reasons. It would be really difficult for me to modify everything like that. My old brain would melt! Lol!

ETERNALEPONINE - Congratulations on your new rank!!! Board holders are such brave, tough, patient (usually) people ;)

I went to three classes today. Doggone if I didn't get punched in the bicep AGAIN in spar class - ouch!!! Master Weapons Sword class was awesome-learned a new form! One of the instructors brought in his own personal katanas to show us. My son & I have our own student-issue katanas for class, but Mr. Paul's are lovely...and very sharp!

Expect problems and eat them for breakfast.

I tested for my red belt today. I managed to survive, despite what I thought was just allergies turning into a full-blown cold overnight, and waking up to blow my nose every hour or so.

I think it went pretty well. Mostly I was excited because my main classmate was able to get a babysitter for her younger kids, and therefore was able to actually test with us, so I wasn't the only adult!

Also, last night I got to break for the first time in almost a year (since our tournament last April). I did a back kick, and forgot how much force it DOESN'T take to put your foot through a piece of wood. My instructor was like, "You nearly took my nose off!" Oops. And I scraped both sides of my ankle on the broken edges of the board. Oops again.

So I should get my new belt next class (Tuesday) and I suspect we'll spend a lot of the next month gearing up for the annual tournament. It's just against one other school, but it was fun last year, so I'm looking forward to doing it again.

I love grappling! We only get to do it in Black Belt Club class because it is intense, but I like it so much more than traditional sparring. With grappling you can employ joint locks and leverage moves and it seems to me there is more time to think once your opponent has you in some sort of hold.

I took family class and BBC this morning. We worked on linear forms which is doing form in a straight line. It can be difficult when you're used to doing turns and pivots in your form! BBC class was a blast. We got to do kick boxing and the instructor put some great music on for us. It's amazing how much having a driving beat helps us stay focused and keep the energy high.

That sounds like a GREAT class! Ground work is mostly for black belt rank in our school. At probationary rank we have to start learning ground take-downs. The last adults who advanced to black belt say they love the ground work, but it just looks so frustrating! Guess I'll find out soon enough whether I like it or not - lol!!

I'm hitting spar class tomorrow with killer driller Sensei Paul...already dying just thinking about what he has planned for warm up.

Oh no, not push ups!! LOL
We had a great class last night, very small but full of energy and fun. Sensei did a lot of atemi work last night, actually it was all kata and atemi. No throws, no ground work so the only other brown belt that showed up and I went to a different part of the mats and embellished our techniques to include throws and grappling emoticon good times! When we were working kata I was able to do my newest without help for the first time, I was thrilled since it's the longest and most complex I've gotten yet.
This Saturday will be my first in 3 weeks, I missed the last 2 because of work, so I'm already excited for it. I hope everyone is having a great day!

Thanks for the encouragement! Got to lead small groups for warm up and some curriculum drills this evening. The lower ranks in my drill group were acting a little lazy, so I had everyone take a turn counting the forms and combinations, and told them each to watch everyone else's details during their rep. That worked like a charm...that, and the Sempai's threat of dreaded push ups for us all - lol!

Yikes! Good luck with that, sounds tough.
I can really sympathize with the feet thing too, although I'm not super sensitive. I worked an outside event as a stand by EMT Saturday, it was 5 degrees and I was standing on ice all day. Even with my insulated shoes and thick socks it took hours for my feet to warm up after the event was done.

I may not be there yet but I'm closer than I was yesterday.

Wow, Ann, that sounds like a hard but invigorating work out! Good for you!
I really need to get to class this morning, but it is 16 degrees outside with howling winds. The do jang is going to be painfully cold this morning and that means my feet will go numb within 20 minutes. I don't have circulation problems, just feet that are hyper-sensitive to cold.

Do jang was closed yesterday as an after-tournament rest day so I know my kid classes this afternoon and evening will be overflowing. I don't love that. Kids are lined up four to five across and all the way to the back of the room. There is no space for anyone to work on form or self-defense which are typically what we do on Tuesdays. I feel like the kids don't get much out of those classes but they do have the option of going to belt-specific classes instead of the all-belt. *shrugs*

Off to get some time on the treadmill to warm myself up. Even driving the kids to school was enough to put a chill in me. Brrr.

Made it to class tonight, I haven't trained in 12 days and it felt like I'd been out longer but it was fantastic. We didn't touch on ground work really but we worked kata and I feel I'm about 85% to being able to do my newest on my own. After about 30 minutes Sensei sent the brown belts to work with the other 3 black belts on throwing and we were really pushing some tough ones. They are very subtle and so difficult for someone that's used to muscling threw things. Once class ended I was soaked, shaking with fatigue, so frustrated I could cry and thrilled with how hard I worked tonight and how far I feel I got in understanding some complex concepts.

I'm already excited for class tomorrow!

It's ok Joy, as I think you already know....it's the journey, not the destination.
It's interesting to hear of others creating their own kata, we did the same in Kenpo (American) and I thought then that it was unique to that form. In Shoshin we do not, but it's a form that changes and who know's what we'll be requiring of our ranks in 15 years or so.
Our next belt test is May, we test every 6 months, by April I'll be getting nervous about it. Most students make brown III about 3 years in and then average a rank every year to year and a half until black. I was promoted at our last test and it would be a bit miraculous if I managed to learn all the information I need for brown II in the next month and a half.

I may not be there yet but I'm closer than I was yesterday.

I like reading about all the different stuff everyone does in their schools! Very cool! I will not be eligible to test for black belt until August, now. I have to work on full review of all the school's curriculum up to black belt and put together my own kata based on th ko ryo pattern I've worked for my last two ranks. Missed the cutoff for achivements within my probationary black rank to test in April.

I knew I wouldn't be ready, but it's not a race. My kids have had their black belt for a few years. I'm just bringing up the rear!

Expect problems and eat them for breakfast.

Wow! Hanne and Chellie, you have a lot coming up this week! As for me, I'm taking it one step at a time. Stress beat me last week, has been kicking my tail for a few weeks if I'm to be honest. Today I worked kata for a bit, got a lot of housework done and took my dog for a 3 mile walk along a ski trail. We have temperatures in the high 20's today but with the sun shining it feels warmer, very nice.
I'm going to make sure I have everything I need for the next few days done so I don't miss class, I've missed enough lately.

I may not be there yet but I'm closer than I was yesterday.

You got some fun plans there! My weekend is consumed with homework - the last assignment for my last course in my MSc program. Then I'll still have to do my research project, but it's going to be good to have the course work out of the way.

MA wise, we got our two little white belts graded to yellow on Friday - woohoo! As well, two of our big group of yellow belts got orange today. And we have three new people in the weapons class. While that's good, it also means back to the basics for the rest of us - and I had been looking forward to creating a sai-bo bunkai. O well, just means I've got more time to think about it.

Hope everybody is having a nice week!

Hi, Ann!
Heavy duty TKD for me all week. We've got testing scheduled for next week Wednesday. It is very unusual test night, but Master is trying to stick with offering a testing every six weeks and Easter/spring break begins for many on Friday and many more will be out of town. I'm going to help with the pre-test class on Saturday and might be on hand for the test.
None of my family are eligible since we just tested last time, and at our belt ranks we are only eligible every 12 weeks. That said, I have to create a form (kata) and learn several new self-defenses. One involves a knife attack.

Aside from TKD, we're also doing spring cleaning and organizing and gearing up for a few big rummage sales that will take place in April. I love getting rid of stuff, especially when it means a bit of pocket cash!

How is everyone's weekend going? I'm stepping back a bit from the computer world (only Spark today) and getting basic things done with my daughter and dog. A long walk, some kata, cleaning out pantry etc.
Anything coming up this week for anyone?

I may not be there yet but I'm closer than I was yesterday.
