Congratulations to S!

I may not be there yet but I'm closer than I was yesterday.

I got tired of starting over and working back to where I was, so I have stopped giving up!

Congratulations S! He did a good job at the belt test last night, despite it getting a late start because of the snow. The test was only for lower ranking students, which worked out well. 4 beginners graduated to orange belt. 2 orange belts, including S, moved up to high orange, and one yellow belt moved up to high yellow.

good practice last night - did a lot with jo - really helps improve form; guys were somewhat horrified by my lovely lingering wrist bruises but still had a good workout.

After taking a few days off last week to go to convention (and rest the pulled muscle in my thigh) it was back to training as usual this week. We did sparring every day, which means that I have some lovely new bruises. Somehow I managed to kick my partner's elbow with the exact same spot on my leg twice... and of course it's the part between the pad on my shin and the one on the top of my foot!

Other than that, it was a good week.

That's a great attitude about it, taking the time off to work other goals that will help your skills is fabulous.

CF, they say in my school that you repeat a motion 1000 times before muscle memory forms. Keep training, repeating, consistently!

Oh wow I guess I didn't realize that recovery was that long! Yikes... We are definitely no socks or shoes class so I guess after a couple of weeks I can just go and observe to make sure that I have a general idea what is going on. I know that I have a belt test coming up so I don't want to completely miss class.

I guess this will be a great time to work on my stretching and flexibility then. I hate doing it for some reason and I really, really am lacking in flexibility. I have amazingly powerful kicks but I just can't kick very high.

Steph, you should take off until those are totally healed, otherwise you could risk infection. I had the same procedure and was out 4 weeks, but we are a strictly no socks or shoes class. If you can keep your toes bandaged and protected you could go sooner, just keep a close eye on them!

Hi all,

This has been a rough week for me when it comest to eating for some reason. Classes on Monday and Tuesday were pretty a ton of fun but really hard workouts. I didn't go last night because I just needed a lazy night and I am still debating tonight. Usually Thursdays are very low attendance nights which I love because there is a lot more one on one attention.

I have to go tomorrow to get my ingrown toenails cut out and burned so I might need to take next week off :(

Class tonight was small. Only one of our instructors and half the 'regular' students made it and we were well grouped in rank, beginning in one group, yellow to another and advanced in the third. Basics to begin with, working kata then self defense into a throw into a pin, ending with ne waza-ground work. We had great energy and kept our heart rates up, so much fun!
The work outs that are truly playing are the best emoticon

I think kids need to advance more often or they get frustrated and want to give up, keeping them motivated is tough sometimes.
Class for us was fabulous last night. High energy and we got to work some pretty advanced throws. I have bumps and bruises from the enthusiasm of my training partners and I'm sure they sport the same. Hopefully Wednesday is just as great.

I may not be there yet but I'm closer than I was yesterday.

I agree that it was surprising to spend so long with contact drills if you don't do them regularly, as building up slowly is the way to go.

I had hoped/planned to go to adult karate last night, but I'd slept badly for two nights and decided that I was too tired. Then DH wasn't able to leave his Mom as early as he'd planned, so wasn't home anyway.

Tonight is kids karate, Thursday we are going to DS10's school concert rather than Karate, and then on Friday, DS10 is testing for high orange belt. The belts, at least for the kids, don't exactly line up with the kyu system (there are more than 10 steps), but it's still good to advance.

We do contact but not for long periods like that. There are forms that work on making the limbs 'hard' by practicing strikes on various surfaces over a period of time to toughen themselves up.
If you where to (once you are healed) practice your strikes for maybe 30 minutes maximum, several times a week, and move up from there, you could theoretically build up to this level.
Personally, I'd use pads. The come for hands, wrists, shins, insteps, about anything you strike with has a pad out there. The lower end will only set you back $20 or so, available at sporting goods stores or online. You can try;

Another healing question - Saturday I was invited to join some shodan types in a free practice - really good to improve my technique in ways class doesn't, but...we were doing strikes which are like sword cuts and my wrists by the time an hour and a half had gone by were shot, way too bruised to do better strikes - two days later they still hurt - any suggestions - in your martial arts do you ever wrap your wrists?

Last full week of the new year, how are working towards your goals? I plan to make every class this week and will spend tomorrow preparing healthy foods to help me say no to high calorie-low nutrient snacks that are endlessly available at work. I will also be walking Neko more and getting to the gym.

I may not be there yet but I'm closer than I was yesterday.

I got tired of starting over and working back to where I was, so I have stopped giving up!
