I've been pulling up my jeans more often and they feel different on me.
Been averaging over 10 cups of water a day
I can get lower to the floor when doing modified pushups
I feel mentally stronger about the whole process.

I had a skirt that I bought at my heaviest... it was way too tight and one of those "I'll fit into this eventually" outfits.

This morning I put it on, and it fell right down my hips. I was completely shocked in the best way possible! emoticon

One way that I'm measuring progress is by certain levels/types of sustained exercise. For instance, I was unable to do planks - at all. Now, I'm able hold a plank for 3 sets of 10 seconds each!

I think the best measure (or result) of watching my foods and exercising is no more aches and pains. Once the exercise kicked in on a regular basis the backaches subsided. I had the backaches sporadically from my 20's on and now, at 59, they are all but gone. My elbow doesn't click anymore. THIS is my lifestyle!

Hi, this is my first post for this group. I wanted to tell you, I admire you and I want to be "you" when I get to that point and my clothes are getting big for me. I am the most weight than when I gave birth to two sons together. I am very short, below 5ft. and I always weighed for me a good size 8 and for some that would be heavy for my size. I go by the clothes and not the scale. I never weigh myself. Now that I have Type 2 Diabetes from the weight gain, genes and the worst being sedentary all day in the house. I do not leave my place for many health reason's and panic anxiety. This made me gain over 50lbs. I am seeing all the right doctor's and they all agree to get out and start walking l0min. and build it up. My family has been begging me to get out and although I have not met a walking buddy, maybe once I am out, I will see someone. I have to return to the world. Good Luck, Jan

I have a really cute leather jacket that made me feel great when I could squeeze into it. A few months ago the sleeves fit my arms like sausage skins. I could not move in it. I try in on about every two weeks. Now I smile when I put it on. I know I will be able to just slip in on next fall. I will be a really HOT Grandma! I will be 55 years old this year. I will qualify for the senior discount at McDonald's. I want them to have to "card" me. They will when I wear that jacket.

I can tell when my stamina increases. I love when an exercise that used to leave me feeling winded feels like second nature to me. It is a sign that I am getting stronger and changes are happening. Also, how my clothes fit are important. Going down a size is an awesome motivator, even better than the scale!

For me, my body measurements are my most important feed back when the scale doesn't move. As long as my body is getting smaller I know I'm going in the right direction. Old adage……muscle weighs more that fat, but burns more calories. It will all pay off eventually.

I try to only weigh-in once a week. Therefore, I measure success through my fitness and my body. Currently, I'm on a running program. When I add millage I feel so successful!

Also, I keep buying smaller clothes, which always makes me feel good.

When my journey began I could not climb a flight of stairs without getting winded. I can do so now. My walking paces have improved. I am losing inches. I have dropped 2 pant sizes. I have tackled two climbs in the past two weeks that I initially thought might always be beyond my capability...and I completed the climbs without stopping!

I now know that I am capable of more than I realized. Challenging myself with increased elevation gains and/or distances while hiking has been a real motivator for me. I am more sure footed. I am stronger. I feel more confident. I feel lighter on my feet. I have more energy. I am breathing easier and more deeply. I can feel stress melt away when I walk now. Initially, I found my walks very tiring. I remember thinking, "I thought exercise was supposed to increase my energy, not decrease it." As a former runner familiar with the "runner's high," I have found that high attainable through walking and hiking as well.

When I started I could not do one flight of stairs without breathing really heavily. Even with my feet problems that make stairs really hard I can now do that flight without having any breathing problems. That is a really good sign I am getting healthier!

I admire all those able to use their mind set as a way to measure their progress. I have not been able to make it to that point yet. I used to focus on the scale number but eventually would fall off the wagon. Now I have a scale that measures weight (and body fat % muscle% water% etc) I have done a lot of research and understand it isn't the most accurate way to know my true fat% (although it does seem accurate with the photos I have seen of people of similar body fat percentages. The nice thing is that I can look at all the numbers (and compare them) so if my weight stays the same I can look at the muscle or the fat number and see if that is changing. I made a rule to only measure once a month so, as I get to step on the scale once a week it is like a little cheat for me to see if I'm going in the right direction or not. Do I need to step up my weight(or back off on my cardio) lay off the carbs, step up the protein etc etc. I try and keep track of how I feel but the changes are so gradual that I almost forget what it was like just a few days ago let alone a few weeks ago. There are some really great ideas on this board though so thank you all for sharing. Just thought I would add mine to the list ^-^

Dozer, I noticed you linked a site about calculating body fat and I looked at it. You mentioned being close to 29% body fat and maybe you already know what all these % look like since you are already so fit but I found the images of body fat really useful and it seems really accurate for the women (I'm not a man nor do I know any super fit guys that keep track of body fat to be able to verify if the men's photos are accurate or not). The link I was about to attach was from builtlean.com (I don't usually agree with their stuff as I have no interest in becoming a body builder) but now I'm having second thoughts because as a biologist I can't determine if cropped photos of abdominal cavities wearing two piece swimsuits is considered PG or not and being my first day I don't want to be banned. :( a google search for body fat percentage images would probably bring it up but...yeah... I don't consider it bad but I spent an entire semester in a cadaver lab learning human anatomy so I'm not sure anymore what the average person considers PG and not PG anymore. Either way, best of luck to all of you on your continued journeys!

I truly hate the scale. Some times it is my friend but mostly it is my worst tormentor. I try to use my body as my gauge. I am so much less bloated because I am eating well. My clothes fit so much looser now even though I have only lost a few pounds.

Hard to get use to, the weighing of oneself, then the rising of the numbers on the scale but the lowering of numbers around the tape measure... I need to adjust and I am not sure how I will do that without worrying... emoticon emoticon emoticon

Inches Inches Inches lost are more important to me than pounds... :) well POUNDS ARE STILL IMPORTANT NOT AS MUCH AS INCHES THOSE SHOW THE REAL PROGRESS AND THAT IS A HEALTHIER WAY TO MAINTAIN YOUR WEIGHT!!

I have so much more energy. It keeps me going. I feel healthier, my skin looks better, my clothes fit better, and I eat better. It also helps to take progress photos.

I measure my progress by how my clothes fit and by how far I can push myself with exercise.

e-your-ideal-body-fat-percentage

I don't really feal overweight and I am active my goal is to lose 10-15lbs going from 155 to 145 or 140 and tone up. But after looking at this site, I could stand to lose even more than that. I could lose 20lbs and still have a body fat percentage of 25%. Ideal for women my age is 21-33%. I am not overweight being at 29% as I am now. But it kind of disturbed me that so much of my body is probably composed of fat. I know I should take things one step at a time, but now I am reevaluating my goal weight :/.

YES! By seeing all the 90 gallon bags I am donating! 25 so far! By the time I am finished I will not have ANY fat clothes, except my 1 pair of 'fat jeans' to compare! It is SO freeing to let go of these things!!!!!

The increase in my energy level. I could barely walk up the three flights of stairs to my room without gasping for air. Now I'm running up all three flights without losing my breath.

go hard or go home!

I use a Tanita machine which tracks not only weight but body fat, muscle mass, bone mass, percentage of water, physique rating, metabolic age and visceral fat. It gives me a well rounded picture of my progress. I also take my measurements. emoticon
