Good Luck with your weight loss. I've also started eliminating some foods that I know are not good for me or my caloric intake, or my hips. I'm adding a lot more water and veggies to my diet.

My top tips for success.

1. Keeping track of my food
2. Celebrating Non-Scale Victories
3. Losing the weight really isn't about food, it's a mind set of a way to live
4. Setting small goals - 10 pound marks
5. Blogging about my journey. There is something special about writing about my experience. I am not someone who likes social media at all. I don't Facebook, twitter, vine, whatever, but I do Spark. Sharing my experience and connecting to others that way, is empowering.

By developing good habits and sticking with them keeps the weight loss going. I keep myself motivated, and you can to by developing the habit of exercising every day, no matter how much and how long. You can increase it a little each day or week until you have it fitting for you. I also use the nutrition tracker daily. That is another motivator for me. I stay within my guidelines that way. I record my exercise, and I bought the spark activity tracker. I think it is a motivator too, to have some kind of tracker t5hat lets you know daily how many steps you're taking. Record your different forms of exercise daily, such as your chores. It will lift your spirit to better health. Do it for you! emoticon emoticon

Being accountable every day for what you eat, record it in the nutrition tracker, and be sure you do some form of exercise each day. It has become a wonderful habit for me, and it motivates me to do the best I can for that day.

I lost 5 lbs in the past two weeks simply by snacking on raw vegetables when I was hungry between meals.

Also, I'm getting better at eating lots of veggies with a little bit of meat and a true serving size of some kind of starch (e.g., grain, potato, etc.) for dinner. A serving of starch is a lot smaller than most Americans are used to eating at one time! Sometimes I go without the meat.

Finally, even when the weather or allergy season is bad, I still walk inside my house, following Leslie Sansone's Part 1 and Part 2 walking videos on Youtube. You can adjust your effort as necessary, and it doesn't take a lot of room. Here are the links:

I found that do team challenges motivate me. I work to complete the challenge and focus on that. Losing some weight and inches is the reward. But if I focus on the scale it drives me nuts.

Remember the importance of activity. Even 10 minutes helps!

For me, 10 minutes is a walk around our neighborhood block. When I find myself thinking, "Oh, no time for exercise today..." The reminder on my Spark Activity Tracker page to be active for 10 minutes each day is a wonderful reminder. A walk around the block is doable for me and I always feel so much better after getting up, getting out and doing it.

I have found the Spark Activity Tracker to be a highly motivational tool. We have wonderful monthly challenges that come with the ability to earn virtual trophies and win physical prizes (Haven't won any physical prizes, but have earned many virtual trophies.)

I'm really pleased with SP & with myself. I have twelve (12) lbs. less pounds that my spine has to support - core muscles are getting stronger. Since I had back surgery in Nov. 2013 & until I went into Physcial Therapy & do my 60 min. "core exercises" every day, I didn't know what core muscles were.

I normally put on weight when away from home, staying with hospitable friends. Used to put on a kilo a week. Put on 3 kilos during a month in Germany, and took 3 months to get rid of them. Went away for 3 weeks recently and took my scales with me. Daily weigh ins showed me what the trend was. Weight gain down to 1.5 kilos! I have ordered a small, light portable scale, which should help when travelling

FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!
My first goal on joining SparkPeople on Feb. 8, 2014 was to lose 6 lbs. by my birthday --
today is my 73rd birthday - April 10 & as of Wed. April 9 -- I weighed 181.7 -- lost 11.6 lbs. -- that's 10 weeks with an avg. of 1.4 lb. a week.

This is a lifestyle not a diet -- I'm pressing on to my next goal & then the next goal in small increments. Want to celebrate my 54th wedding anniversary in Nov. with a healthy 50 lbs. weight loss.

Thank you God!
Thank you to my DH & Family!
Thank you SparkPeople for the encouragement, message boards, website content and the two Spark books that I am in the process of reading from cover to cover.

Good luck sparkvenice our niece just did the Mesa AZ tough mudder that she trained for for a year. Boy was she in good shape. At the age of 50 her all girl team did the over 10 mile course with 25 horrible obstacles in 2 hours and 40 minutes. She loved it and wanted to do it again as soon as she finished.

Eat food with natural high nutrients not fortified and set out to reach challenging goals to help you stay focus. For me it was training for half marathon and once that was completed. I started doing p90x3 twice to prepare for a mud run obstacle course in Oct.

Track Your Food.

I just listened to a Video Tip shared by Coach Nicole for doubling your weight loss. The tip shared was food tracking.

Since I have been on my health journey for a bit over 9 months now, I decided to review my progress and see if this has held true for me.

For the first 6 months of my journey I did not focus on food. I knew I needed to move and that had been my primary focus for the first 6 months.

On December 23, I decided that I needed to be more aware of what I was eating and began tracking my food. I have been food tracking for 3 months now.

Guess what? For the first 6 months I averaged a 4 pound weight loss each month. Since I began food tracking, I have averaged a 7.73 pound weight loss each month. That's nearly double!

I have found Spark People's Nutrition Tracker to be a very useful tool. I am now more aware of my food choices and find myself eating more consciously.

TIP 1: Exercise every day -- usually in the am -- if for some reason I don't -- I will do in the pm even if it is before bedtime. My exercises are in the form of physical therapy exercises -- 60+ minutes faithfully.

I had back surgery in Nov. had to build up my abdominal "core" -- with great instructions from my physical therapist I do the program at home now & for the first time in many, many, years my back does not shout in pain. There might be some discomfort or an ache but I gladly accept that & am so glad I opted for the surgery(also have had both total knee replacements).

TIP 2: PORTION CONTROL -- no longer have family-style meals
no longer go to buffet or All You Can Eat restaurants

Power walk in place, add a few kicks, side steps and knee lifts when you don't feel like doing anything. Doing this while watching tv or a movie still gets you exercise and the time goes by fast if you don't watch the clock.

Find ways to add more movement to your day...even if it is just a little bit.

Like FIT4HZGLORY says, it is slow and steady that wins the race.

It's the moral of the story, The Tortoise and the Hare, which is why I chose the tortoise on my ticker.

I bought SodaStream. Loving it. Making soda at home for 5 cal a pop, no artificial anything, helps to meet my water quota (I hate bland water, even with lemon). They have a million flavors.

SOMETHINGNEWJAN- That is so true. You really get tire of losing the same pounds over and over again. That is why we have to make up our minds to stop letting this thing beat us to death. We have to stop it and put our noses to the grindstone and move ahead taking small steps each day. Do it one day at a time. emoticon

FREEDEE54- Hope you are doing better today. We are here to help and encourage each other. Just hang in there. Here is a emoticon to brighten your day.

Yes there will always be good days and bad, what matters is what you do with the bad day after you have had it... do you give up or do you get right back in thee and try to make the next day a better day...its a challenge but we can do it maybe not everyday but most days..

I think to myself if i make a mistake have a bad day is that reason to keep on going on with the bad day for days and months NO!!...If we do we will end up right back where we began or even worse. I dont like starting over..Losing the same pounds month after month year after year.

Donít wish it were easier. Make yourself better:-)

Those things happen. No one is perfect. We strive for perfection each and every day. We want to do what is right, but that is okay. Today is a new day. Dust yourself off and start again.

Yesterday was just an off day. emoticon

Yesterday was hard. I did not want to work out. I wanted something hot and chewy and sweet and fattening to eat. Maybe some chocolate Mac and cheese topped with caramel and french fries. Lol. But I logged onto Spark people and looked around a bit. I read a few posts and a blog or two. That was just what I needed to get up and get moving. It was not my most productive day but thanks to Sparkpeople.com I made it through without too much damage. Bad days are inevitable. I want to handle bad days without resorting to my old bad ways but in healthier way. I know that will help me succeed. Thank you guys for being here.

Changing your mindset is very important when considering keeping weight off. When I make slip ups, I have a tendency to just not forgive myself and put myself in a discouraging state. One of my team leaders told me that it is okay to have an "off day". Just those two little words helped me to understand that this is not a hard core diet plan like I have been on in the past. It is a new way of eating that is a lifestyle. That made all of the difference in the world to my mindset. My attitude changed.

So now, when I slip up, I tell myself that it was an "off day". It softens the blow and enables me to get back on track. Just those two little words "off day" made the difference.

I have to keep working hard. I am determined to reach my goal.

We have to emoticon no matter what the challenge. If we fall down, we have to get up, dust ourselves off, and start again, and again, and again until we get it right.

I do that as well. I end up tweaking what i eat a little depending on what SP says. Maybe add a little protien or a calcium rich food. Or if I have a extra calories splurging on some icecream.

I have been on this a few weeks and lost three pounds. I tried Weight Watchers but I found it cumbersome and expensive. It did work but I didn't want to do it again. With SP I feel totally in control and am happy with the results. I eat very healthy but have a daily treat after dinner as well. It can be diet icecream or. a bit of chocolate. I eat nuts especially pistachios but count them to get one ounce. I don't feel deprived and am actually seeing results.
I have cut down what I eat a little bit by measuring, eg 0.5 cups brown rice with curry whereas before I'd pile on the rice. I cook three or four times a week and am eating real food. Eating out is harder, those calories really pile up depending on the restuarant.
I also swim 3 or 4 times a week. I always did but I hiked up the swim time from 50 minutes to seventy. I really feel the difference...
So to sum up SP is great. I can see chugging along and doing this for months or a year, whatever it takes to get my weight down to goal.

My spouse is eating the same foods as myself. We are eating more proteins and less carbs. Low fat. 3 meals a day and 2-3 snacks. Working for us for over a month now. Lots of sugar free jello.

Hi Fit4HZGlORY and SOMETHINHNREJAN, glad you replied to my suggestions. I try to eat a greater portion of protein than carbs and the reason is that it will keep me fuller for a longer time. You see, I am a late sleeper and by the time I am having breakfast, it is usually close to lunch time, so I have eggs most of the time prepared in many different ways. My carbs usually include lots of veggies or salads. I am experimenting with zucchini, cucumbers, potatoes, tomatoes, lots of spinach and broccoli and cauliflower. I found a lot of great recipes in the Spark recipes section and also in Pinterest. I usually have around 60% of protein and 35% carbs. I don't have many snacks because I have been reading the book The Leptin Factor and it talks about how you can mess up this feisty hormone by eating out of rhythm. Since I have basically a brunch and then a late dinner, it works for me; I try to have a late dinner (6-7pm) with a serving of protein and vegetables so I won't feel hungry at night, which has been my biggest problem, night bingeing, and I have been able to control the urge to eat after dinner. Hope it works for you. If you are still working, I would imagine that you do 3 meals a day with snacks. Try to cut down on the snacks at night time, you should be able to shave 1-2 pounds a week. Good luck to you both and let me know how it goes. emoticon

I used to be like that so I would start all gun-ho and by the next month, nothing, didn't even logged in to motivate myself. I started writing on a piece of paper anything that entered my mouth and at the end of the day or the week (whichever is easier for you) I would enter all the information into the site, sometimes even my mood, weight, exercise minutes (before I got the SP tracker) and any other information I could think about. Sometimes with our busy schedules, kids, work, etc, tracking is not one of our priorities but it is an important part of this journey. Hope this tip will help you emoticon

If you want a good tip for loosing weight, get the book, The Leptin Diet. Even I was surprised by the tons of information in this little book, all researched and documented by the latest scientific studies, but before you say anything regarding scientific studies, trust me, you are not going to find anything anyone more skeptical than me. Being in the healthcare field for over 43 years, I can tell you, first hand, how backwards the FDA, ADA, AMA are in relying to the new data to the public and you know why that is, there is too much money involved from BigPharma, Big food companies, etc. This is sound, solid information and what I like about it is that it works with your body, not against it. Do you feel that sometimes there is too much food to eat in any given diet and you just don't have the appetite for it, even though they require that you eat 1,200 to 1,700 calories (depending on your height and weight)? Here, the author explains why and how to follow your body rhythms, not a set diet. The author is a certified clinical nutritionist, Byron J Richards. Trust me, you will be surprised at how wrong are we eating. Hope this will help you. emoticon

Don't let what you can't do get in the way of what you can.

My goal for Feb is to continue logging my food, fitness and prepping some delicious low fat snacks in advance! One of my favorites is rolling green grapes into sugar free lime jello and them freezing them! YUMMY!

I have been struggling with menopause issues for the last 3 years, especially with trying to lose weight the last several months.

I recently upped my protein and lowered my carbs. This is working. I've lost 5 lbs this month, and I feel so much better.

I was listening to a free podcast that I found on iTunes this morning, and the topic was using visualization to achieve fitness and well being. Studies show that if you visualize yourself doing something, the same muscles fire as if you were really doing it. For instance, if you want to be able to run 1 mile, or do 3 pull ups, visualize yourself doing it, really believe that you can, and give it a try.

Also, being grateful for what you can do helps you achieve your goals. For instance, I'm so grateful that I can run again after 12 years of back issues. When I run, I am thankful that I can go out and do this, and even when I don't feel like running, I enjoy it more by being grateful that I can.

When you believe you can do something, you can do it!

Kathy

My danger zone is snacking after dinner when I'm watching TV or relaxing. I try to distract myself by painting my nails or flipping through a magazine but when I am really craving a snack, I love fruit! Grapes are great and you can also get these little packs of apple slices with yogurt dip that are only 90 calories! I plan my food throughout the day to allow myself some extra calories for late night snacking.

Yeah. Shut your mouth. No, really. One serving is enough, and a small one at that. PLUS, burn off more than you put in.

Simple, huh? emoticon

I am a full believer in tracking my food. Luckily I have access to SP from work and I can keep up and know from meal to meal what I have left and it helps me to be able to plan better. I am very excited about how well I have been doing. I have not eaten more than my calorie allotment, AND I have been drinking my water everyday. This Sunday will be my 3rd weigh-in and I have kept myself from weighing at all this week. So I cannot wait to see my results. I will let yall know!!! emoticon

I am going to do this!!!!!

Since June...I have been a yo-yo up to 157 down to the 140's. Hmm what works for me is tracking and I have been using the spark people app. I was doing weight watchers. I did that for a year and maintained but never really lost.

The biggest thing is trying to incorporate exercise. That to me is the key to weight loss :)

Great advice, I have been journaling/ or tracking my food each day and it is so important. I have not added exercise consistently yet. I'm working on that. But your advice is right on. It can be simpler that we make it out to be! emoticon Bri

I have discovered spaghetti squash and I love it! I am experimenting with recipes. I have not tried the chick peas, but I may. I may add some to my spaghetti squash. I have been weighing my self each morning and it has been a full week now. I have lost a little over 8 lbs from tracking my food. Even if I eat a bad food, I track it. This helps me still try to keep in the calorie range or close to it. This also helps me realize what's in food and what the calories are for future.

Have you tried roast chick peas? I have seen several recipes for them on Pintrest and I want to try them.

I, for some unknown reason, like the crunchy aspect of snacking at times. I choose to freeze the fruits.. and if I buy them frozen I eat them frozen even more.. AND I find that crunching on raw peppers can be great to get your fiber, vitamins and crunchy urges to a minimum!! emoticon

Inches Inches Inches lost are more important to me than pounds... :) well POUNDS ARE STILL IMPORTANT NOT AS MUCH AS INCHES THOSE SHOW THE REAL PROGRESS AND THAT IS A HEALTHIER WAY TO MAINTAIN YOUR WEIGHT!!

OMG I just discovered something this morning while making my salad for my lunch today. That the cap for your salad dressing is 1 tbsp! Maybe some of you knew this trick, but I never thought to check. Hey, that is one less thing I need to wash! Everyone have a Sparky-day :)

I am new and have been yoyo dieting for the last four years. I always stay between 153 and 163. I would like to get down to 140. Motivation has always been my problem. I am hoping I can stay more motivated by tracking daily with Spark.

If something happens that might get you going in the wrong direction, sign on to SP, and do a search for whatever is bothering you and read everything you can on the subject. Lots of people have been there, so there is bound to be someone who says just that right thing to get you back on track.
