I am telling you all from my own experience.......the only things that make me succeed are :

1) Remembering my WHY am I changing my lifestyle (food, exercise, mentality etc....)

2) ACCOUNTABILITY (either to myself or to have an accountability friend, group, spouse, blog, ..etc)

If you keep thinking about these two things, your life will change in so many good ways..... : )

If you walk a lot for exercise you need to increase intensity by walking differently. Such as walk up and down stairs. walk with feet wide apart and walk backwards. Carry hand weights with you. I used to have a rebounder I walked and jumped on but my mom talked me in to thinking I was too old for one I could get hurt. I am only 64. emoticon emoticon emoticon

Focus on small, attainable goals.

When I initially returned to SparkPeople in December 2013 I set a large weight loss goal. Then I read the article, "The 10% Solution." It made so much sense that I adjusted my weight loss goal. It worked!

Happy to be losing even a little bit to keep me below goal! I feel the longer I can stay

I have to keep changing things up. I reset my spark nutrition tracker goal every 10-20 pounds so that it stays relevant to my new weight.
Go to start
Track weight and click the little tab underneath it that says "edit goals"
Then go to the middle of the page under the blue print where it says "need help"
Click one of the choices
Fill in how much you want to lose or by what date you want to lose it and SAVE by scrolling down the page AFTER the box disappears to the SAVE button.

I grew up in IL. I remember the summer heat well. Heat bothers my husband too, but he also has a heart condition. What I would suggest is either opting for an earlier walk, or possibly waiting until the temps drop a bit in the evening. If that doesn't work, then consider an indoor walk. You could do laps in an indoor mall. You could go to a gym. You could do Leslie Sansone's Walk Away the Pounds from the comfort of your home for free from YouTube. You could try a Sparkpeople indoor workout on the hotter days. There are options available. I hope that helps.

ABBY-ROAD what about walking around in a shopping centre! That would be air-conditioned in the summer? Not shop just do walking for 45 mins. Some shopping centres over here in Australia have walking groups and you can do walking after hours around the shopping centre either early morning or evenings

Perhaps a treadmill for home would help you could walk slowly with that while watching tv at least you could be indoors under your fan or with the air-conditioning on if you have it.

In the hot what about aqua aerobics or water walking classes at your local swimming pool. Or even an indoor Tai Chi / Qi Gong class or doing some DVD exercises at home can be free.

Sometimes I wonder "what was I thinking?". Yesterday was hot, muggy and humid, but I went out to walk in the morning before it got too hot. I'm not a heat person, I actually would rather it was cold. Anyway, I walked about 45 minutes, drank plenty of water, but when I got home and sat down ... the sweat just poured down my face. I had no idea it was that hot out. I rinsed down my face with cool water (it was bright red) and just sat down to relax and regroup.

The rest of the day was a total loss, I felt sick to my stomach with a raging headache. Stupid me. My body isn't used to exercise in the heat, I'm going to have to rethink my walking plan. Not smart to walk in the heat when my body doesn't react well to heat and humidity.

Today is to be another miserable Chicago summer day with more storms predicted. I wanted to go and check out bicycles and try some out but that will be on hold until it is dry out. My first venture of trying to ride a bike is chronicled in my blog - can we say disaster?

4 days and muscle glycogen and associated water-loss have slowed up.
Focussing on fluid intake makes it much easier(more mind-full) to remember other good habits and tips.
It seems to be a trigger that concentrating on just 1 particular challenge can then be central to aiding a wider response in activities eg refusing a favorite food etc
Any subsequent successes are confidence-building.

The Minimalist Grocery Shop: How To Do A Little Less Shopping

Saving money on groceries can be a fastidious task that requires a lot of pre-planning, mental energy and a desire to try new things.

While we can find ways to save on groceries by buying different brands, or simply making cheaper meals; sometimes we need to go back to basics and consider ways to simply buy less groceries.

The less we buy, the less we spend, the more we save.

This is where a minimalist mindset can be of benefit to you. To live minimalist is to own less, make do with what you have and more importantly; buy less stuff (groceries in this case).

This guide will show you how to do a little less grocery shopping, become mindful of what you spend on groceries and re-evaluate how to simply get by with less when doing a grocery shop at your local supermarket.

Buy your food unprepared

If something comes pre-made, prepared, sliced, diced or cooked; it will cost you more. The more food you can purchase that is yet to be prepared, requiring you to do the work, the more money you will save. It also tends to be significantly healthier too.

For instance, years ago we used to buy blocks of Cheddar Cheese for Taco night. Everyone in the family had a chore to help prepare dinner; mine was grating the block of cheese. Now days most families simply buy a packet of shredded cheese. This convenience costs money and takes up more space.

Buy fresh fruit and veg in exact quantities

Try to become more minimalist in assessing the quantities of fresh fruit and vegetables that you need per week. Often we simply grab a handful of this, or two to three of this. The trick to doing a little less shopping and saving money on your grocery bill is to calculate exact quantities ahead of time and not over buying. We waste far too much food as is.

An example of this is if you are making a salad, figure out the exact per person quantity. Half of a tomato each, a quarter of an avocado per plate, a full cucumber per person and so on.

We have previously spoken about ways to save money by focusing on size here.

Only buy bulk if you must

Buying in bulk traditionally has the ability to reduce your grocery costs, however when trying to be minimalist it ends up taking up more room and can lead to overbuying, thus overspending or what we like to call spaving (spending to save money).

Try to only buy bulk groceries when it suits you and makes perfect sense. Things like toilet paper and paper towels are good examples of this. Dont naturally assume that buying in bulk will save money.

Try instead to simply need less by consuming less.

Every item you buy in your grocery shop should fit into a planned meal

This means that every item you purchase should be assigned to a specific meal; whether it be breakfast, lunch or dinner. No snacks, treats or cupboard fillers.

Buy less by simply assigning every item to a known meal between now and your next grocery shop.

Use environmental bags to do your grocery shopping

Reducing your plastic reliance doesnt necessarily save you money, but it does help the environment and reduce your waste. Plastic bags are polluting the oceans and harming marine species. Opt to buy some reusable bags and always take them shopping with you.

The added bonus here is that the bags are easier to carry, less heavy and make shopping a little more organised.

Dont buy items in the grocery store checkout aisle

Items in the checkout aisle are there to make you spend money.

You dont see BBQ chickens in the checkout lane because its not something we can easily consume or see ourselves using. Instead we see things like chocolate bars (hungry?), magazines (bored?) and drinks (all this chocolate and reading is making me thirsty!).

Instead of looking at these items or contemplating them, use your time at the supermarket checkout to organise your groceries as you put them on the conveyer belt (to make it easier when you unpack at home). Perhaps even prepare how you are going to pay for the items, the loyalty cards you may need to show to earn points and whether you have any coupons ready to claim.

Use the checkout aisle as the preparation time to complete a successful grocery shop.

Opt for items with less packaging

Try to avoid products that use excessive packaging. Often you are paying extra for your groceries that not only come pre-prepared but heavily wrapped or packaged. It is also bad for the environment and another way to avoid paying for convenience.

The less packaging you acquire in your shopping trolley, the healthier and cheaper the groceries will be that you take home.

Stop buying bottled drinks

Beyond milk, how much money is wasted on bottled water, soft drinks and juices? We are buying these things to quench our thirst yet have water flowing from taps 24/7.

Avoid paying for anything other than milk. Save the money instead and remove a whole product class from your weekly grocery shop.

Do a stocktake of the cupboard before you do the groceries

To buy less, you need to know what exactly you already have. When you do a grocery shop, you should be doing so on a needs basis not a wants basis. This means only buying groceries you actually need; not simply want to try and might use at some point.

Doing a stocktake of the cupboards and pantries is the easiest way to do this. Before you leave, check what you have and assess what you need.

Clean your fridge weekly and know what you have inside

Similar to checking your cupboard, you fridge holds the answers to many money saving questions. What items do you regularly not use and have to throw out? What do you already have?

Check your fridge for these answers and often you will quickly find yourself buying less at the supermarket straight after.

Stop forgetting one ingredient

All too often people forget one magic ingredient for a recipe or dish. Try and pre-plan your shopping to always avoid this as the goal to saving money on groceries is to visit the supermarket less. The more you find yourself at the shops, the more money you are tempted to spend and consume.

Dont be loyal to brands, try new items and specials all the time

To truly be minimalist, you need to be open to buying less or more of an item depending upon its value or price. If something is on special one week, switch to that brand and give it a go.

The less loyal you are to a brand, the more money you save.

Opt to avoid a grocery shop altogether

For the truly frugal grocery shoppers; why not try and avoid a weekly grocery shop altogether? Your house will have less food and waste and your weekly savings will increase.

You could do this by trying the no new food challenge for 7 days and missing a grocery shop altogether.

Buy less, save more

Its really that simple. To save money on groceries, either employ a range of sophisticated tactics to get cheaper items or simply do as stated above; buy less.

1 thing that no-one thinks of, is that people dont allow themselves to go hungry in this day and age.
In times of deprivation(esp. with food-rationing) it is a normal part of life to go hungry.
With the super-abundance of foods these days, especially empty-calorie processed foods, it is more usual for people to over eat. This is also exacerbated by many people leading sedentary life-styles.

HERE'S AN IDEA:

One thought that may help you reaching your goals is to break them down into baby steps or mini goals. Like maybe as well as the bigger goals Like lose X amount of pounds / kilos by a certain time frame you may like to set yourself small daily or weekly goals as well for example:

1. Sticking to your morning and evening routine if you have one daily.
2. Sticking to the exercise you are doing for the week.
3. Tracking your food if you do that (I don't, but I know some people do)
4. De-cluttering 1 thing a day.
5. Drinking your 6,7,8 or how ever many glasses of water you wish to drink each day.
6. Saving money each day / week.
7. Not drinking Soft Drink / Soda each day.

These are just some examples I could think of, yours might be completely different or similar. What you could do is, do them up on a chart or in a word processor and print them out.

Then each day as you do them give yourself a star sticker or dot or whatever it is that will appeal to you. If you successfully achieve all your goals for the week you could give yourself a treat at the end of each week for doing so.

Not an expensive treat or a food treat but something that will make you feel proud and happy that you have reached your goals for the week.

Put it up somewhere you will see it through out the day/night. If you are seeing lots of stickers on for each time you complete a goal through out the day you'll be more inclined to keep up with it.

On days when you have not many stickers or none at all you'll feel more like you have to do better the next day or with the next mini goal.

Hope this tip help you reach your goals and or gives you an idea to help you think up new ways to keep yourself inspired to keep going on days when you feel like it's all too hard and you feel like throwing in the towel so to speak.

We can all do it! One thing to remember and the best way to look at it is: We are not on a diet anymore. I don't care whether the "diet" word is in the title of books or not. You can follow those books plans or a mixture of different books, or weight watchers or whatever their ways of eating etc. like I do.

But it's not a diet we are on it is: A lifestyle. Our Healthy Lifestyle, Your Healthy Lifestyle, My Healthy Lifestyle.

Remember we're not on a diet but living a healthy lifestyle for the long haul from now on. So make it something you know you can stick to forever and are enjoying doing.

Focus and discipline gives you the strength to keep going when you want to give up. There are a few things you can do to keep your focus. Start by creating a vision board of what you want to achieve from living a healthy lifestyle. A vision board is a collage of images that represent what you want out of life. For example, if you want to lose weight then include a picture of what your target body looks like. Another great way to focus and stay motivated is to find music that makes you want to move. Whenever you don't feel like working out just put on your favorite motivational track to give you the boost you need.


3. Change Your Routine

Routine is the biggest killer of motivation. You need to change it up to stay excited about what you are doing. If you run on the same treadmill day after day, change your routine by running outside. A great way not to have a stagnant regimen is to do something different every day. Don't eat the same things for breakfast, lunch and dinner every week. Change your meal plan up to include new and healthy foods. Start playing different sports so you are continually challenged. Change is the spice of life; embrace it!

Living a healthy lifestyle is the best choice a person can make. This choice doesn't come without its challenges though. Use these three simple tips to stay motivated, focus and change things up in your efforts towards your health goals.

I believe that this journey is one that is with us our whole life. It is about how we live our lifestyle if you like.

I don't look at it as a diet I look at it as finding something I can do or a way of eating healthy etc..for the long haul for the rest of my life. i don't look at it as a chore that has to be done once I'm at maintenance I'm suddenly free of this chore or whatever.

For me I'm not and never have been on a diet I'm making changes to live a healthy lifestyle. I take bits and pieces from different "Diets" for want of a better and have my own program and lifestyle change for the long haul that works for me.

1. I loosely follow along the guidelines of eating right for my blood type. I'm a B+ (There is a booked called EAT RIGHT 4 YOUR TYPE" by Peter D.Adamo

2. I follow along with avoiding Wheat. I'm not Celiac but according to my blood type I should avoid wheat BUT not Gluten. There is a difference. Check out the Book "WHEAT BELLY" by William Davis to read and understand the fact that there is a difference between having to be Gluten free and wheat free. It's very interesting let me tell you.

3. I follow along with the 5 rules of the Leptin Diet by Bryon Richards as I try to keep my hormones in balance as well.

4. For me and our family we avoid Preservatives and artificial stuff in food do not drink soft drinks or the diet soft drinks they are eevn worse for you.

5. I also try to avoid foods that cause inflmation as I have slight Osteo Arthritis in my hips and at 49 years old I'm not going down the road of Hip Replacements like doctors would have liked to have done 2 years ago.

6. For us it is whole round approach a healthy lifestyle not a diet. What I have found is working for me and is easy for me follow my whole life without feeling deprived or like I'm on a diet.

Anyhow what works for me may not work for you. But what you have to remember is that at whatever stage you are at with your weight loss beginning or maintenance is that you are following a healthy lifestyle choice for the long haul not one or more diets.

I believe that's absolutely true! That's why I've failed in the past; I've been on "diets," instead of living a different lifestyle.

I read the other day that when approaching or reaching maintenance the journey is not over.
Perhaps that is what is meant by "lifestyle" and one's approach to it.

I'm currently re-evaluating my motivations and goals. I'm approaching the maintenance stage, so I'm thinking hard about triggers and stressors. This is also helping me stay on track to get to my goal weight. I think going back through our goals from time to time is essential to keep the weight loss going. It's also important to examine what's motivating us. Using a specific point in time (like a trip or event) is less effective for me, because after that even takes place I'm at a bit of a loss for motivation to maintain the loss.

How about you? How do you stay motivated?

Support Your Liver to Lose Weight

The liver plays a major role in metabolism and detoxification, so keeping it squeaky clean is an important key to weight management! All the nutrient-rich blood that leaves the digestive system dumps into the liver, where carbohydrates, fats and proteins are metabolized. When you eat an excess of fat and sugars, your liver becomes clogged and shuttles the overflow to all the wrong places in the body, like your arteries and the brain. In this congested state, the liver has a hard time using fat as fuel and starts to store it instead of breaking it down. Makes sense, right?

So now I can hear you practically begging please, help me unclog my liver! Well, one of the best ways to show your liver some love is to simply follow the Five Rules of The Leptin Diet.

Rules 1 & 2: Never eat after dinner and eat three small meals a day. By not snacking between meals and not eating after dinner, you are creating an environment in which the liver can start to dump clogged fat, bringing your triglyceride levels down.

Rule 3: Do not eat large meals. In eating smaller meals, the liver is not so overwhelmed with excessive fat and sugar and has a chance to rest and clean house.

Rule 4: Eat a breakfast containing protein. To help the liver get back into this fat burning mode, it requires protein. This is why starting the day with a high protein breakfast is recommended.

Rule 5: Reduce the amount of carbohydrates you eat. Finally, by not eating an excessive amount of carbohydrates your blood sugar levels remain more stable and the liver does not have the added stress of finding a place to shuttle the excess sugar.

Along with following the Five Rules of The Leptin Diet, supplementing with certain nutrients can help clear liver stagnation. Lipotropic nutrients are those which help move fat out of the liver.

Two of the top fat busting nutrients are acetyl-l-carnitine (ALC) and pantethine. ALC has the unique ability to metabolize damaged fat fragments and clear them from the liver as well as the brain. Pantethine helps to clear out a fatty liver and lower triglycerides by transporting fat to where it can be used as fuel. Many other nutrients also help protect the liver and aid in the detoxification process, including lipoic acid, silymarin, N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC), curcumin, quercetin and B vitamins, to name a few.

Food Enzymes and Hydrochloric Acid Can Relieve Gas and Bloating

Many people experience gas and bloating after eating. Gas can accumulate in the stomach or the intestines, causing pain, rumbling and indigestion. Gas is a product of incomplete digestion and an indication that food is fermenting in the gut, instead of being digested properly and assimilated into the body as nutrients. Food enzymes and a change in the digestive pH, by taking betaine hydrochloric acid, can improve digestion and relieve painful gas and bloating.

As people age, their levels of digestive enzymes decrease, so many find they need to add supplements to meals.

Also as the body ages, the amount of hydrochloric acid secreted to aid in digestion decreases. This leads to a condition known as hypochlorhydria. Hypochlorhydria begins as a gut deficiency and is one of the leading causes of gas and indigestion, and it can lead to many diseases and chronic inflammation. Without this important stomach acid, protein cannot be digested properly, and many nutrients cannot be absorbed. In addition, acid from the stomach is a signal to the pancreas to perform its function, so hypochlorhydia can lead to problems in the pancreas as well. Diseases associated with low stomach acid include asthma, lupus, anemia, psoriasis, arthritis, ulcers, and many more. Indicators of low stomach acid can be simple gas and bloating, or more complex conditions, such as food allergies, constipation, anemia, and nausea.

Food allergies may also cause gas. Many people are allergic to wheat and/or dairy. Allergy tests can confirm this, but a simpler method is to remove suspected foods from the diet. If digestion returns to normal, eliminate the allergic foods for a few months and then begin to slowly reintroduce them. Food sensitivities can be healed in this manner, by removing the irritating food for a few months.
