It has something to do with the technology. It uses a multi-axis accelerometer emoticon (not that I actually understand this) which means it counts changes in speed, I think. If you notice, your upper body shifts up/down & side/side when you walk--I guess it reads that movement? I dunno, but it works on the treadmill!

My old pedometer had a spring thingy that counted the steps. It also worked on the treadmill but, I had to wear it on my waist (which didn't always work if my waistband rolled over) or on my pocket (which sometimes generated extra steps.) It also tended to fall to the floor quite often.

The FitBit technology works best when worn somewhere on the torso. I wore it on the neckline of my shirt while driving home from work to see if I picked up any extra steps from the car movement. I did, but 30 steps on a 35 mile nightmare commute is virtually nothing.

Thanks for the info Lora!
Tereasa they make all kinds now. I have one that is a TraQ ANY_WEAR pedometer. meaning you can clip it anywhere and it is suppose to tract.

My problem with all of them is I cant seem to get them to track accurately. They don't seem to track right when I walk on level ground. Only when I do trails or hiking where the ground is uneven. I have tried several and cant figure out why. The only thing I can come up with is I am not heavy footed and wear shape-ups for shoes. I have even tried placing them in several different areas to track. I just wish I could find one that is accurate.

I have the Zip--the less expensive FitBit. It doesn't track sleep or stairs like the fancy-schmancy One does. I do love it, however. I wear it on my bra (right between the cups emoticon ) and it is perfectly secure there--I don't have to worry about it falling off in the bathroom! LOL!
It tracks beautifully and is completely silent and every once in a while it makes me a random alien/robot picture. I calibrated it using the treadmill, so when I am out and about, I can get a rough estimate of distance-however, I realize my stride length varies more when I am walking casually or during work and that can throw things off.
The only thing I do not like is the sync to SP. FitBit has 4 classes of activity-sedentary, lightly active, fairly active and active. It sends over to my fitness tracker the info for both fairly active and active and that makes it look like I am burning way more calories than I feel I really am. I'd rather it sent over only the info from my "active" minutes.
Ah well, I am getting used to the warning message at the bottom of my fitness tracker screen and since SP sends over all my nutrition info to FitBit, I can check either site to see where my calorie deficit is for each day.
