I've found that overall creativity/productivity and sleep all suffer if I am online too much. When I start to see the PC clock moving toward double digits for the hour number, I begin to think about going out and walking. It may take me a few hours in which to do that, but I am starting the process of thinking - it's time to go, it's time to go.

Yay for seeking Balance -- even when we don't necessarily FIND it easily.

I am veering more toward the "selfish" myself, as far as the computer goes. I have a small pile of real books that I want to read ... as well as the exercise time and family time to arrange in my days. I DO love the internet too.

I don't have any great ideas for balancing computer use with the rest of our lives. I can get sucked into spending a long time online, too. I seem to go in jags, myself -- for a week or two I'll be online practically all day, and then I'll spend a week or two where I barely sign on. Just the past weekend, I read the Sunday paper, and cooked, and napped, and did some Yoga, and I didn't give a thought to my "sparkstreaks" or generally to being online at all. I have been toying with taking weekends off from computer use -- Maha, you might try setting a SMALL goal, such as, reserve one evening each week to be OFFline, or something -- to get you started into a new habit? As you succeed in that, and find that you are okay doing some of the other things you want to do, or need to do, maybe that would help you find balance. Just an idea.

The question of balance....

I have become 'selfish' with my spark time - no weekends unless I have plenty of 'me' time and very short posts. @ this point in my life, it is that or stopping and I always gain such wonderful insights, I would hate the thought of stopping.

No suggestions Maha - only good thoughts for finding what works for you...

I have a Sparkfriend who rewards herself with Sparktime after she works out and "swallows her frogs".
(“If you know you have to swallow a frog, swallow it first thing in the morning. If there are two frogs, swallow the big one first.”-Mark Twain)
I need the Sparktime to get me motivated to swallow my exercise frogs somedays, but I've tried limiting my Sparktime and other non-frogs, and then rewarded myself with those.

Ah...how to pull the plug...! :-)

If it IS a modem that you use, having it plugged into a power strip with a switch makes it pretty easy to flip the switch and would cause you to "think twice" before turning it on...making it a more conscious, mindful process.

Just a thought...

Well, yes, I can work on the PC offline, unless I need to research information for a paper or something. But DO I...that is the question!

Your class and job assignments: are they also pc-related work? If so, is there any way to FORCE your pc to be offline? Have to say I don't quite understand your online service. But, for instance to turn off the modem while you are doing your class / job assignments?

The "key" words in my post are "addictive behavior," Don. That's it. Now I've said it. I'm an addict. I spend too much time online, at the computer doing NON-essential things that I enjoy, particularly hanging out on SparkPeople, and not NEARLY enough time working on class and job assignments.

Just wish there was a way for you to get better service, 'Maha!

When connection time is limited it might be worth while to do some of your writing offline...?

Perhaps go online briefly to copy / paste blogs for reading and responding to...pop 'em all into your word processor for writing back to OFFLINE and then when you go back online to copy / paste all your replies back to everyone. Perhaps you are already doing this...?

Strategies for balance, eh? Yes, I'm for that. No room for my computer here and using my daughters now. So if I pop out of bed early enough, eat breakfast, take my grandson to school, get back and meditate before she's on,people might hear from me before, say 10 AM. Sounds lame; I know.
My time was better organized when I was working, but my heart was breaking, so, back to creating structure for myself.
Ok, that wasn't very helpful.
Questions also about general team goals? emoticon

Wish I could figure out how to balance my online time better. I LOVE hanging out on SparkPeople (since my 3D options are limited), but I'm overdoing it. HELP! How about us developing some practical, specific, simple strategies for that...or any other addictive behavior that might be plaguing one of us.

Ideas anyone?

I am so glad we are still here - I hated to think about this fabulous group disbanding. My apologies for not posting more...
I am not sure I will, but the thought of a safe place as I start my 60th revolution around the sun I'd soul satisfying.
Namaste my friends.

Here's our winter spot to hang out, share successes and not-successes, to be *real* together, to set mini-goals...just...WHATEVER!

I'm just about to do strength training and then finish a write-up for work. Enjoy the day everyone!
