Strength training has many benefits such as increased strength of your muscles, tendons and ligaments. This will reduce your risk for injury and the increased muscle mass will raise your metabolism and make it easier to maintain a healthy body weight.

Never Clean Your Grill With This

You might want to throw away the wire brush that you use to clean your grill.
Wire bristles can loosen and cling to a grill after cleaning.
The bristles can become embedded in food and swallowed.
Two people needed emergency surgery to remove bristles lodged near the small intestine, and three patients had bristles removed from soft tissues in the neck.
Either check your grill very carefully for bristles after each cleaning—or, better yet, use an alternative cleaning method.
(Editor’s note: Try cleaning your grill with crumpled aluminum foil or buy a grill-cleaning block.)

Forcing yourself to smile may sound silly, but plenty of research shows that it can help you feel happier and short-circuit the stress response. So the next time you’re feeling down or frustrated, make yourself smile for one minute—yes, a full 60 seconds. You have nothing to lose but a bad mood. You might even try practicing right now!

The next time someone cuts you off in traffic or is too slow starting up when the light turns green, send him or her a pleasant thought. Try I wish you happiness or May you be safe and healthy. This is an aspect of “loving kindness” meditation that can help to keep you calm and generate a feeling of compassion. Once you try this for a little while, you’ll have a whole new, softer outlook on your fellow travelers and a happier commute, and you’ll be a more relaxed driver!

It’s official—omega-3s help you live longer.

Recent finding: People over age 65 with the highest blood levels of omega-3 fatty acids were 27% less likely to die from any cause during the study period, 40% less likely to die from coronary heart disease and 45% less likely to die from arrhythmia than people with the lowest levels of omega-3s.

Overall, those with the highest omega-3 levels lived an average of 2.2 years (803 days!) longer than those with the lowest levels.

Source: Study of 2,692 people, average age 74, by researchers at Harvard School of Public Health, Boston, published in Annals of Internal Medicine.

If you’re one of the millions of people who has problems sleeping, this tip will energize you—tomorrow! Tonight, about 30 to 60 minutes before you go to bed, have a glass (eight ounces or so) of tart cherry juice (available at health-food stores). Researchers found that those who drank tart cherry juice slept better and longer. Cherries are also packed with disease-fighting antioxidants, so there’s another great reason to pour yourself a glass!

To stop clutter before it starts, make yourself donate one or two items every time you buy something. So if every new shirt means that you have to donate a shirt or two, you’ll think very carefully about what you want to keep and what you want to acquire. This means less clutter will accumulate, so you’ll have less trouble keeping tidy as time goes by.

Optimism Is Your Choice

Choosing to be optimistic is one of the best things you can do for your overall health. Studies have shown again and again that optimistic people have less stress, better mental health and better physical health. So the next time you find yourself seeing the dark cloud instead of the silver lining, do something about it. It’s that simple! If you find yourself frowning, force a smile...if you’re complaining, turn it into praise...if you’re feeling jealous of someone, think for a few minutes about all the great things in your own life. It’s what we practice every day that makes us who we are. Choose to be happy!

When was the last time you exercised your feet? Just like the rest of your body, your feet need a little attention! And once you start exercising them, they’ll feel so great that you’ll wonder why you never thought of it before. Plus, stronger feet mean better balance and less risk for injury. So let’s start treating our feet!

First, get a sock or a golf ball and put in on the floor in front of you. Then pick it up with your toes, hold it for 10 seconds and drop it. Repeat with the other foot. Do three to five repetitions with each foot. Next, lift your foot a few inches off the ground and write the alphabet in the air using your big toe and ankle...repeat with the other foot. And when you’re done with that, give yourself a little foot massage. Use your thumb to rub the center of the foot just below the ball of the foot. In addition to feeling great, this is an acupressure point that has an energizing effect. Rub each foot like this for 30 seconds, and you’ll be amazed at how good your feet feel!

No more woes for your toes:

Don’t be afraid of cleaning up! Even if you’re not a naturally tidy person and even if your desk is doomed to fall into clutter again, a quick cleanup can give your day and your mood a boost of energy. Set a timer for five minutes, and file away everything you can...put pens in their holders...throw away anything you don’t need...and give the surface a good wipe. When you’re done, you’ll see how a clean desk makes for a clear mind.

When you get that afternoon energy dip, try Flying Like An Eagle. It’s an ancient Chinese Qigong exercise that enhances the flow of qi, or energy. Stand with feet shoulder-with apart, knees slightly bent, arms at your side. Breathe in and stand on your toes. Raise your arms up and out until your hands are ear-height. Then breathe out and slowly lower your heels as you bring your arms down. Do in one fluid motion 10 times. Your energy will soar!

Feeling blue? Have a cup of coffee. Several studies show that drinking as little as two cups of coffee a day lowers your risk for depression. But be sure to keep away from the sugar. Sweetened beverages have been shown to increase depression risk.

People often are eager to get to their favorite restaurant or activity right away when they're on vacation, but that actually can work against maximizing your enjoyment. Memories of a great first day will have faded by the end of the trip but not before making everything else that follows seem a little less special. Research by Dan Ariely, PhD, author of Predictably Irrational, suggests that how you feel on the last day of your trip colors your impression of the overall experience. So don't hang around your hotel on the last day. Make that day a fun, fulfilling one.

To improve the quality of your sleep, integrative physician Frank Lipman, MD, recommends a simple yoga pose. Do this pose right before going to bed or if you wake in the night. Lie on your back, arms at your sides, palms up. Close your eyes, relax and lie still, breathing slowly and deeply for five minutes. "This soothes the nervous system and eases mental and physical fatigue," explains Dr. Lipman, author of Revive: Stop Feeling Spent And Start Living Again. "You'll sleep soundly…and wake up rejuvenated."

When you’re stuck and can’t seem to solve a problem, you may need to get your creative problem-solving juices flowing. One way is to randomly select a word from the dictionary. Then make as many connections as you can between the word and the problem at hand. This can energize your thinking and spark a solution.

Now that spring is here, why not look to your own backyard for delicious additions to your meals? Dandelion greens make a great salad. Tama Matsuoka Wong, author of Foraged Flavor, says one of her favorite dishes is dandelion greens in a vinaigrette with poached eggs and chopped bacon. Pick the greens when they’re young, before the plant starts flowering. Wild garlic grass is another terrific addition to salads. It grows in your lawn and smells like garlic when you break it in half. It’s a tasty substitute for chives in any recipe. Happy foraging!

When we think of spring-cleaning, most of us think about tidying our homes. But chances are your car could use a little freshening up, too. Take a moment to clear out the clutter, then head for the car wash—or get out the soap and bucket, and do it yourself. Driving in a sparkling car will give you a lift (pun intended) and may even save you money. Anthony Manganiello, author of The Debt-Free Millionaire, says that when his car is squeaky-clean, it seems like a new car and helps him resist the urge to splurge on a new vehicle.

Feeling a little blue? Try eating a handful of nuts. Evidence suggests that the omega-3s in nuts may ease depression and boost memory by improving neurotransmitter function. Nuts also provide folate—and low levels of this B-vitamin are linked to depression and poor cognition. All nuts are good for you, but peanuts (technically a legume) are particularly high in folate and walnuts are rich in the omega-3 alpha-linolenic acid. Substitute nuts for some of the meat in a stir-fry dish…sprinkle sliced or chopped nuts over vegetables, rice, soup or cereal…add ground nuts to a smoothie or yogurt…or spread nut butter on celery sticks or apple slices.

When a favorite song comes on the radio, we all turn up the volume and maybe even sing along—and instantly feel better than we did moments before. It turns out that there’ s a lot of science behind this phenomenon. In one study, when volunteers listened to joyful music, their blood vessels dilated by 26%, on average, improving the flow of blood, oxygen and nutrients. In another study, increased levels of germ-fighting immunoglobulins were found in the saliva of participants after they sang and played instruments. Music also has been found to ease pain…relieve nausea…improve memory…and reduce blood pressure. No single style of music is more therapeutic than another. Select what you enjoy most!

An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but it can also get pretty boring. Next time you’re in the grocery store, why not look for a carambola, also called star fruit? Some varieties (such as the Arkin carambola) have a very sweet pineapple-orangey flavor…others (such as Golden Star) are more tart. All varieties are rich in vitamin C, which helps support a healthy immune system. The fruit also contains vitamin A, which promotes eye health, and potassium for cardiac function. Buy it green, and let it ripen at room temperature until the ridges darken. Slice carambola crosswise (no need to peel it first) to make pretty star shapes that are perfect for fruit salad, Asian stir-fry or just on their own.

Just two minutes of exercise makes you feel good. It raises your heart rate and increases the body’s production of neurotransmitters such as norepinephrine, dopamine and serotonin. These are the very same substances increased by antidepressants, says John J. Ratey, MD, associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. Jog in place...take the stairs...or go for a quick walk. And see your spirits rise.

Some of the greatest books ever written are now read mainly by high school students too young to appreciate them. The classics are often more enjoyable and more meaningful as we get older. And they’re typically available for eReaders for free or at very low prices. Some of the best: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain...The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton...The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald...Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austin...A Separate Peace by John Knowles...and To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Happy reading!

Are you feeling a little sluggish from the time change? Try a healthful, homemade energy drink. Add one tablespoon of blackstrap molasses to a glass of milk (regular, skim, soy or rice milk), stir well and bottoms up. The molasses provides a good dose of iron, and the milk contains protein for some extra get-up-and-go.

Spring is fast approaching (it’s a little more than two weeks away)! But we still have some chilly temperatures to deal with. Did you know, though, that our bodies burn a few more calories when it’s cold just keeping us warm? Take advantage of the chill through the first weeks of spring. Exercise outdoors as often as you can. And you can keep the temperature turned down slightly at home—not enough so that you’re uncomfortable, but enough that your body has to do a little more work to stay warm.

Don’t feel guilty if you plop down in front of a TV rerun tonight—or pick up your dog-eared copy of Pride and Prejudice, which you’ve already read 50 times. Researchers from the University of Buffalo in New York found that turning to a familiar fictional world—whether it’s a TV show or a novel—can help people feel more in control and calmer after a tough day. So get on the couch—and click on Netflix. You’re not a couch potato...you’re giving yourself a much-needed restorative boost.

How do you like this one - got it in a Daily Burst of Energy email.

"Need to talk to someone who can understand what you’re going through? Find a woman in her 50s. It turns out that women in this age group are more empathetic than men of the same age—and that middle-aged people of both sexes are more empathic than younger and older people, say researchers at University of Michigan and North Carolina State University. It isn’t clear whether it’s the age itself that brings out this trait or whether this particular generation of people born in the 1950s and 1960s who lived through the civil rights and antiwar movements were shaped by these events. In any case, it’s good to know whose sympathetic ears to turn to when you need them."

I hope I qualify!

The next time you hear a family member or a friend put himself/herself down, say something like this: “Don’t be mean to yourself.” We all can be hard on ourselves sometimes. But it’s one thing to hold yourself to a high standard and another to be downright mean. When you catch others putting themselves down unnecessarily, you can help them to stop. And, in the process, you might be more likely to stop yourself the next time you’re unnecessarily harsh with yourself.

You know that processed foods aren’t good for you. It’s not healthy to eat six-syllable ingredients that you can’t pronounce. You know this...but how often do you break your own rules and eat junk? To give you an idea of your real intake, write down the name and quantity of all the processed foods you eat for one week—and then take a good look at the list. It will help you see what you’re really eating—and knowing that can help you cut back.

Green tea is known for its cardiovascular benefits, but now researchers have found that a key chemical in green tea also can help boost memory and spatial learning. So...for an afternoon brain boost, sip a cup of green tea and sharpen your focus. Added benefit: It’s delicious.

There’s no doubt about it—the cold makes us hungry. Researchers aren’t exactly sure why this happens—it could be that we act like squirrels who instinctively store up on food for the cold days ahead…or it could be that we snack more because we are cooped up in the house and not as able to exercise outside, says researchers who were interviewed for Morning Edition on the radio station NPR. Whatever it is, a study has shown that many of us eat 200 more calories daily as soon as the thermometer starts to dip and the days grow darker. To satisfy those winter cravings, reach for protein (how does a bowl of warm chili sound?), since it tends to help us feel satisfied.

No one likes to be bored—and most of us think of boredom as a negative state of mind. But let’s not dismiss it so quickly. Researchers from the University of Central Lancashire have found that people are more creative after performing a boring task, such as reading boring numbers. Reason: It gives people a chance to daydream. So the next time you have to photocopy a bunch of pages...stuff envelopes...or clean your windowsills, relax. A creative solution or inspiration might be waiting for you immediately afterward.

Make Valentine’s Day about more than romance. Instead of just focusing on your romantic partner, reach out to friends and family members and let them know that you are thinking of them, especially those who live on their own. You’ll make them feel good—and yourself, too. And don’t forget that today also is National Donor Day, created to inspire people to show their “love” for others by donating blood, platelets or marrow or by signing up as an organ or tissue donor.

We say soothing words to others when they are upset. Why not use the same approach with ourselves when we’re feeling down, asks Kristin Neff, PhD, author of Self-Compassion: Stop Beating Yourself Up and Leave Insecurity Behind (William Morrow). Gestures of compassion—even when given to ourselves—release oxytocin, a brain chemical that promotes feelings of trust. You might speak soothing words to yourself when you are upset, just as you would to someone else. You might say, “I know that I am feeling bad right now. And I’m ready to do anything to support myself right now.”

You know that playing board games and doing crossword puzzles can exercise your brain and boost your memory. But so can several other simple and fun activities that you probably don’t even realize are “brain workouts,” says Cynthia R. Green, PhD, founder and president of Memory Arts, LLC, a memory fitness service in Montclair, New Jersey. With your hand, tap out a tune that you hear in your head (this challenges movement and auditory skills and encourages your brain to work different neural pathways) or juggle small stuffed animals (the complex movement augments the part of the brain that transmits information).

The next time you are so angry that it feels like your blood is actually boiling, take this simple step. Sit down, suggests W. Robert Nay, PhD, clinical psychologist and author of Taking Charge of Anger (Guilford). When you are in a seated or reclining position, your body feels more relaxed and safe—and that may help to interrupt the rush of anger-induced adrenaline. If you are in an argument with someone, you can suggest that you both sit down.

When you add focus to hearing, you have listening, a skill that is endangered because of all the digital information around us, writes Seth S. Horowitz, PhD, an auditory neuroscientist at Brown University in a recent New York Times article. Solution: Take a minute to really listen to what your family and friends are saying to you. “The richness of life doesn’t lie in the loudness and the beat,” writes Dr. Horowitz, “but in the timbres and variations that you can discern if you simply pay attention.”

Most people breathe rapidly and shallowly. To increase your oxygen intake during the day, take at least one big deep breath every hour. Notice how much better you feel.

If you’re prone to tension headaches, carry some peppermint essential oil with you. Just a drop of it, rubbed on your temples or forehead, can help ease the pain of a headache. Essential oils are available at health-food stores and online. Take a few whiffs of lavender oil at the same time—and you’ll also feel more relaxed.

Here’s a simple balancing exercise that you can do anywhere—stand on one leg for a few seconds, lifting the other leg off the floor by a few inches. You will be strengthening your core, the muscles of the abdomen, pelvis, lower back and hips—and in turn, building balance and stability. It’s harder than it sounds, isn’t it? So if you need to hold onto a wall for help at first, that’s fine. Maintain good posture while you hold the position—and make sure you do the exercise on each side. Just think, the next time you are standing on that checkout line or on the phone, you can be strengthening your core.

Do you know people who swear by their slow cooker or Crock-Pot? Slow cooking is an easy way to prepare a warm meal, especially on a cold night. You can make delicious stews, roasts, curries, even desserts. Using a slow cooker is a huge time-saver because, in most cases, you throw the ingredients into the pot and let them cook for about five to eight hours, depending on the recipe—while you are free to do something else. The house fills up with a rich, wonderful aroma—and dinner is ready!

Every year, one of our sister publications, Bottom Line/Personal, asks experts to think back on the year and identify something they did that went so well that they would recommend it to others. One of the experts, David L. Katz, MD, founding director of Yale University’s Prevention Research Center, said he “prioritized fun.” In the past, Dr. Katz had waited for gaps in his schedule to do things he loved. This year, he scheduled time for fun and then treated it as a commitment. It feels good to do the things we love to do—and decreases our stress levels. We can’t wait to put this one into play.

With all the electronic gadgets available to us, we tend to forget the pleasures of writing by hand. One way to enhance the experience: Use a special pen or marker. What color is it? What thickness? You actually can match your mood to the pen you write with—red is bold…blue is soothing…and green is for new thoughts. A silver or gold marker automatically makes you feel festive. Take a few minutes—and choose your writing implement carefully. You will enjoy the experience that much more.

We know that the holiday season is a busy one. But what if you were to take a break from it all for a little while? One way to do it: Sit and observe the activity that’s going on around you. We got this idea from Jane Pollak, a coach and author who recently blogged about it (www.JanePollak.com). For an hour, Ms. Pollak observed gulls breaking up clamshells. She especially enjoyed “not having any responsibility for what was happening in front of me.” Needless to say, that hour gave her a renewed sense of energy. Look for an opportunity to observe an activity that has nothing to do with you—delivery men at a busy Chinese restaurant…children (not your own) at play on a playground…cargo ships being unloaded in a harbor…a family of squirrels frolicking through the trees. Just sit back…watch…and enjoy.

That aquarium you’re standing in front of is good for your health—so good for you, in fact, that it’s actually called aquarium therapy. Studies have shown that watching fish in a tank can reduce stress and anxiety. It’s also been found to help seniors with Alzheimer’s to eat better and children with learning disabilities to hone social skills. In fact, if there is an aquarium in your dentist’s or doctor’s office, it might be there for a specific reason—to help you calm down.

We’re all so busy rushing around and gobbling up our food that we hardly taste what we put in our mouths. What does it take to really taste our food? It means slowing down while you eat...and bringing your full attention to what’s happening in your mouth. Try this once—and you’ll see what we mean. As you take that first bite and start to crush the food with your teeth, you will experience the food’s real taste. Savor the moment, literally. The taste will explode in your mouth, and you can experience it as the first time you ever tasted that sweet or sour or savory flavor. Expect to be wowed and satisfied in a new way. It will be such a pleasant experience that you’ll want to chew mindfully again...and again.

Today is the fourth Thursday of November, the day in the US when we give thanks. But what will you do tomorrow…and the next day? Why not continue to give thanks—to take a moment every day to actively think about what you are grateful for. As American playwright Thornton Wilder wrote, “We can only be said to be alive in those moments when our hearts are conscious of our treasures.” Be alive today—and every day. Happy Thanksgiving!

We all know how good it feels to exercise. But now Penn State researchers have found a link between people’s daily physical activity and their satisfaction with life. They found that people who extended their normal workouts by just a few minutes were more satisfied with their lives on those days. Lesson: Your satisfaction with life has a lot to do with how much physical activity you get every day. The more you do, the happier you’ll be with yourself and your life!

If you are like many people, you are getting ready for the feast your family will have on Thursday. Make a quick inventory of your friends and neighbors. Are there any “strays” who might enjoy joining you? Inviting nonfamily members to your holiday event can make it even more fun and festive. Family members usually are on their best behavior when nonfamily members are around—and everyone will benefit from new conversation topics and perspectives.

This is an easy way to make everyday meals at home feel special and look elegant. Use cloth napkins. They come in all kinds of lively colors, patterns and textures and cost as little as $2 or less apiece. Over time, they’re far cheaper than buying paper napkins! After using cloth napkins, throw them in the laundry and fold them neatly (and you don’t even have to iron them!)

A lot of people use to-do lists to get things done. But it turns out there’s a way to get that list to work harder and to help us get more done. It’s this: Instead of vague entries (such as “pack for vacation”), outline concrete “actionable” steps (such as “find passport,” “lay out clothes,” “arrange medications”). The idea comes from Lindsay S. Nixon, who blogs as The Happy Herbivore (http://HappyHerbivore.com). She got the idea from David Allen, author of the classic Getting Things Done (Penguin) (www.DavidCo.com). When the list includes specific things to do, rather than sweeping topics, you get more done.

It’s the season of sniffles and sore throats. Some people swear by the natural remedies they use. Two favorites: Garlic tea (chop up a clove of garlic, steep it in hot water and add honey)…and the homeopathic remedy oscillococcinum, available at health-food stores and drugstores. One strict rule: For either of these remedies to be effective, it must be used as soon as you feel the first symptoms, not when you have a full-blown cold. What’s the first remedy you turn to when you feel a cold coming on?

Take a few minutes to observe a dog or cat (whether it’s your pet or someone else’s) going about its normal routine. You’ll see stretches, sniffs and sighs…satisfying and questioning facial expressions…romping or leaping…the sound of lapping up a drink. Most of the time, dogs and cats calmly go through the routines of the day, completely in the moment and absorbed by its sights, smells and sounds. Watching them—and experiencing the world as they do for a few minutes—provides an unexpected feeling of calm.

We “fell back” this weekend. Daylight Saving Time started yesterday. Some people may have loved having the extra hour yesterday. But many others will be dismayed that the length of our daylight will continue to ebb...gradually but surely...until December 21, the shortest day of the year. The only light on the horizon (so to speak) is this—each day after December 21, we get a little bit more light each day. That’s a month and a half away. The countdown to December 22 begins.

Feeling down in the dumps? Chomp on a carrot…or a banana…or a pear. The more fruits and vegetables you eat daily, the happier you’ll be, say researchers from Warwick Medical School in England and Dartmouth College. That’s great considering all the other health benefits that we get from eating lots of these foods, such as lowering the risk for heart disease and cancer. The researchers found that people who had seven servings daily of fruit and vegetables were more satisfied with life and had greater levels of well-being. You know what you need to do.

You want to exercise, you really do. But you have trouble following through on your intention. You’re not alone. If you don’t have the exercise habit down, you can try this easy “trick,” recommended by Michael W. Otto, PhD, professor of psychology at Boston University and coauthor of Exercise for Mood and Anxiety: Proven Strategies for Overcoming Depression and Enhancing Well-Being (Oxford University). Simply try to exercise at the same time every day. Whether you do it in the morning, at lunch time or right after work, you will be establishing a pattern—and that way you don’t have to change your schedule to fit it in.

It would seem like all the little breaks that you take during the day—checking e-mail or reading something online (like this Daily Burst of Energy, for instance)—interrupt your productivity. But (good news!) they don‘t. A study published in New Technology, Work and Employment found that employees who took brief breaks were 9% more productive than those who worked straight through. Nice to know that breaks can boost productivity!

Mondays are special because they are the first day of the week. Researchers at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health have found that Mondays play a unique role—as the day of the week in which people are most likely to set new healthy behaviors, such as start a diet or an exercise program...or even make a doctor’s appointment. One of the many initiatives associated with the day is Meatless Monday, designated as the day when people improve their health by not eating meat. To get Meatless Monday recipes, go to www.MeatlessMonday.com...and to find out about other healthy Monday initiatives, go to www.MondayCampaigns.org. What new healthy habit will you start today?

What is it about seeing a dog riding in a car with its head out the window that makes some of us smile? For other people, a favorite cartoon...or a Three Stooges skit might make them smile. To help put a smile on your own face (when you need to), why not create a “favorite” place on your computer with the YouTube videos or images that light you up when you see them. That way you can see them whenever you need to boost your mood.

Here’s an easy and quick way to get rid of sore or stiff muscles, says Mark H. LaBeau, DO, at the Center for Advanced Medicine in Encinitas, California. Lie comfortably on the floor, placing a tennis ball right under the spot that aches, such as the back or neck. You also can sit on a chair and place a tennis ball under your foot to ease foot pain or soreness. Apply a little pressure for no more than 10 minutes. You won’t believe how much better it feels. Muscle discomfort that lasts for a week or more should be evaluated by a doctor.

This is one of the smartest things I've ever read about conserving energy. I have also heard that there is great power in rituals, but I never put two and two together. Makes soooooo much sense.

Are you facing a lot of big decisions? Here’s a way to save your energy and focus from Robert C. Pozen, senior lecturer at Harvard Business School. He wrote, in the Harvard Business Review Blog Network, “Making too many decisions about mundane details is a waste of a limited resource—your mental energy.” During periods of multiple decisions, cut out those that are not as important—such as what you wear or what you eat. For example, eat the same breakfast all week. He calls it “routinizing the routine.” When you pare down the number of decisions you do have to make, you have more energy for the important ones.

I know this is true. Not always easy to achieve with a husband who lives to read in bed. Don't like to wear eye patches.

Thanks for the reminder.
