3. Find the good intention behind the “bad” behavior.

Instead of beating ourselves up for doing "bad" things, we need to take a step back and ask what we get out of it. Emotional eating, for example, DOES squash away emotions we don't think we can handle feeling. If we feel our only two choices are to explode in our boss' face in a furious tirade -or- to shovel handful after handful of M&Ms into our mouth, our payoff is keeping our job and pushing away the anger, even if it comes with a kickback of serious self-hatred and health issues.

(This one ties into my weight gain - based on what I was convinced was a good intention of avoiding male attention and thus avoiding the temptation to return to a lifestyle I knew wasn't healthy - physically or emotionally. The path from the good intention to the "bad" behavior was twisted and illogical, but it was there.)

Another one of the motivational images from doing the Spark WebSearch for a point:

I kind of went sideways in thinking about this quote. Rather than what we learn about someone else through how they handle adversity, what can we learn about ourselves. Who thinks ahead expecting adversity and subsequent failure? Surprisingly ... a LOT of people.

What do you expect out of Halloween? It's only five weeks away. What about Thanksgiving dinner? That's nine weeks away. What about all the stresses in those last weeks before Christmas and the New Year? This is a very very tough time for many people.

And what do we often hear? "I'm just hoping to maintain. Forget trying to lose through the holidays." We haven't even FACED the adversity yet, and our words and thoughts express that we EXPECT to struggle and fall - and success would be a surprising bonus.

Life is full of adversity. As another Sparker put #1 in a list of important things to know - "Life isn't fair. Get over it." Instead of looking forward to possible adversity and already being ready with the white flag, perhaps we need to ask ourselves:

Who am I really?
Who do I want to be?
How do I face doubts?
How do I overcome my fears?
How do I stand strong against dangers?
Do I want those to be what I'm known for?
What will my actions and choices say about me when facing adversity?
What do I want my actions and choices to say about me?
What can I do to create that future me that I'm proud to watch handle adversity?

We may STILL struggle and fall in the face of some adversity. This isn't about always succeeding. It is about anticipation of success (versus failure) in the face of challenges.

I think what I really like about this one is the reminder that sometimes actions today don't have results we see now (we don't reach a higher point), but they do still have a benefit. I see this doing weights sometimes. I may have numerous days in which I don't get any "stronger" as measured by being ready to go up to the next weight, but those days add up until eventually I am doing more.

If you had a bank that credited your account each morning with $86,400—with no balance carried from day to day—what would you do? Well, you do have such a bank... time.

Every morning it credits you with 86,400 seconds. Every night it rules off as "lost" whatever you have failed to use toward good purposes. It carries over no balances and allows no overdrafts. You can't hoard it, save it, store it, loan it, or invest it. You can only use it.

Here are six terrific truths about time:

• First: Nobody can manage time, but you can manage those things that take up your time.
• Second: Time is expensive. As a matter of fact, 80 percent of our day is spent on those things or those people that only bring us two percent of our results.
