Personally, I am one of those who only enjoy the smell of coffee. However, I do understand your frustration when looking forward to something, and it doesn't quite meet your taste expectations.
There are several ways you might experiment according to your taste. It is my opinion that dark chocolate is an acquired taste. If this is the primary flavor concern there are a few things you might experiment with. For example, try for example, a smaller portion of chocolate you are accustomed.(such as a semi sweet small chip in smaller portion along with a darker chocolate.)
As I haven't looked at this for the above stated reason, I hope you can find someone who has tried the actual recipe. My intention was merely to stimulate your thinking of some things which might replace your problem areas.
I hope you find your answers. I will be interested in learning what you found to work.
