I just made these tonight (the first recipe I've tried in the cookbook, which I just bought last week) and I agree. Way too dry. And the flavor is much too strong. All you can taste is cocoa powder, with just a hint of coffee. Yuck!
I will definitely not be making these again.

People from church did take them, but I don't know if they ate them or tossed after the first bite.
I froze three and brought down for my Dad and sister to try - both Coffee drinkers - they didn't like them, commented they were darker than in the book and actually the third was given to her dog.
This is not a keeper!

I made these a while ago and was also disappointed. They were a bit dry, I had trouble with the frosting, and mine were MUCH darker than pictured. I had a couple, but took the rest to work. The got snapped up there in a flash. I used instant espresso powder, which is REALLY expensive here.

If you canít be a good example, then youíll just have to be a horrible warning.

I baked them last night, stopped at starbucks and picked up their stronger blend - three pack package as I AM NOT a coffee drinker, but thought they would be good to take to our Church brunch this AM - I did not do the frosting/icing - but my daughter got the idea to semi-melt a dk chocolate Hershey's kiss on half of them. We'll see how people like them. I did taste one, and could taste the coffee. It is rather dry, my daughter agreed and just said it would be good with a glass of milk. I'll post the reaction from the folks at church.

Personally, I am one of those who only enjoy the smell of coffee. However, I do understand your frustration when looking forward to something, and it doesn't quite meet your taste expectations.
There are several ways you might experiment according to your taste. It is my opinion that dark chocolate is an acquired taste. If this is the primary flavor concern there are a few things you might experiment with. For example, try for example, a smaller portion of chocolate you are accustomed.(such as a semi sweet small chip in smaller portion along with a darker chocolate.)
As I haven't looked at this for the above stated reason, I hope you can find someone who has tried the actual recipe. My intention was merely to stimulate your thinking of some things which might replace your problem areas.
I hope you find your answers. I will be interested in learning what you found to work.

I made them this weekend, and found them to be a complete waste of time. They didn't have nearly enough sweetness, and I couldn't taste any coffee over the chocolate flavour. I bought instant coffee specifically for these cookies and was excited about making them, only to be disappointed. I suppose people who like really like dark chocolate flavour might like them. I also found the texture to be too dense and dry. Has anyone made them or modified them to taste different? Sorry to be so negative, but this is exactly why I'm hesitant to try new recipes, I don't like wasted time and ingredients.
