I have been stuck for 6 weeks because I could not submit the IRB application until I heard back from organizations for permission to hang up flyers advertising for participants. I was so glad yesterday to finally get approval from one of the organizations. Now I need to get the IRB application completed.

I see the light. It's faint at times, but I see it!

I met with my chair today to game plan how I might structure my findings chapters. He as always asked lots of good questions, so I feel like I have some thinking to do as I map out chapter this weekend. On the bright side, he thought the conference paper I wrote was strong so I'm feeling good about how this is coming together.

I'm getting close to finishing my coding for my dissertation. I finished open coding all of the data for my Time 3 interviews and am now moving on to axial coding.

I feel good about the progress I'm making since I have prep for a conference presentation and I've been applying to faculty positions this term. It's been very busy, but I'm moving along.

Ok, I am going to give another try at reporting my accomplishments in the morning as incentive to do what I said I would accomplish during the day. Today I absolutely need to get my PowerPoint presentation ready to send my chair in advance of the oral proposal defense.

I am going to report my progress today before I accomplish it, so that I will have incentive to keep up with my dissertation goals. I have become stagnant lately because I have been waiting for my committee to approve my proposal and have not heard back yet. However, I realized that there are other things I can do while I am waiting. Today I will spend at least 15 minutes working on my IRB application. Even if the committee has changes that they want me to make, it will be easier to just add the changes if I already have it prepared and ready to go.

Congratulations, UNIQUEBLUE! It's exciting to hear that you're making progress. I hope that your oral defense goes well.

As for me, I'm still coding my data but am now working on the final time point in my longitudinal study. I'm committed to graduating this year and am hitting the job market this fall. We'll see if anything promising opens up. Looking ahead is really keeping me on task.

I am finally starting to see progress in my dissertation journey. My proposal was approved by my chair and second committee member and is now at the stage of being reviewed by the URR (university research reviewer) and he said that I just have to add a copy of my interview guide to the appendix and he will pass it too, which will take me to the oral defense of my proposal. Thank you for all of the support, as I really wanted to give up at times over the past 3 years of trying to make progress.

Happy to hear that you're making progress, UNIQUEBLUE, despite all the changes with your committee. Hopefully, you'll get helpful feedback from your new chair since they were already a member of your committee.

As for me, I'm coding away on my T2 transcripts. I have to do two different assessments of each transcript so I'm doing a second pass now. I finished a transcript this afternoon and will likely get through another one tonight.

Hello everyone! I just wanted to check in and see how your summer was going and how the progress towards both meeting your dissertation goals and your health goals is coming along.

I had a big scare this past week because my dissertation chair had to take an emergency medical leave of absence and I suddenly had to find a new chair. However, all's well that ends well, because the head of the department asked my 2nd committee member to step up to the chair position and then assigned someone else to be my 2nd person. One frustrating thing was that I had turned in a rough draft of my proposal to my previous chair a couple of weeks ago and was waiting for a response, so now the new chair has it and I have no idea how long it will take her to get back to me. The problem is that I do not want to spend time working on sections of content that could end up being cut altogether based on the feedback I receive, so I have kind of been on hold while I am waiting.

I'm finally back to coding my Time 2 interviews. It's slow going but I've finished my first one and I'm hoping to get back into the groove of things so I can make the most of my summer.

We'll get there eventually. At least that's what I tell myself!

Today, I met with my peer debriefer. It was helpful to talk about my data before I really dive into the conference proposal. She helped me recognize that I'm finding some interesting stuff and that I'm going to have to figure out the story I want to tell as I continue my longitudinal analysis. If anything, it was nice to hear that my work was interesting to someone other than me.

Back to grading papers so I can finally work on my own stuff!

I hope that your conference proposal goes well. I can see what you mean about dissertation envy...I have just had a couple of friends who started around the same time I did finish up as well. I have to watch myself though, because sometimes instead of motivating me, this ends up being discouraging because I feel like I am so behind.

Good to hear from you , UNIQUEBLUE! Hope that we can help you get back on track. This semester hasn't been as productive as I would have liked but at this point any progress is progress.

Today, I am working on a coding memo that should help me generate a conference proposal next week. I really want to make steady progress this summer since I'm hitting the job market in the fall. I had 3 friends defend in the past week and it's amazing how dissertation envy will get you going again!

I feel like I am always apologizing for periods of inactivity here. I wish I could say that they only represent inactivity from this group or from SP in general, but every period in which I have not been participating as much in SP or in this team is also a period where I have been neglecting taking care of my health, watching my diet, exercising, etc. At this point I am so disappointed with myself that it is tempting to give up trying, but I know that will just make things worse. I am actually writing this in the "What did I accomplish today" section even though it is only early in the morning and I have not actually done anything yet, but out of faith that I will get something accomplished. I will get back on track with my health goals and will review the feedback I received on the first 15 pages of my literature review.

BLUE - Sorry to hear that things continue to be stressful with your health and with school. Hoping that the work you've done to narrow your database pays off.

NEW-PAMELA-BERG - It sounds like you're getting really close to being done. Congrats!

I'm not making much progress with coding, though I did submit a revised personal statement for a fellowship competition here at Michigan. I'm moving forward from the school level to the university wide competition, which is pretty exciting. Keep your fingers crossed for me since the funding that comes with this award would allow me to solely focus on my dissertation next year. I'm a long shot, but you never know!

Moving forward. I have submitted to my committee and received 60 formatting corrections. Ugh the pain from holding my dissertation so long it has gone from apa 5th Ed to apa 6th Ed and edits are a pain. Anyhow, survived yet another rejection, moved forward and am ready to submit to QRM once I get formal approval from my mentor. Hooray!

I have been in a big fog lately, so apologize for being MIA. Just got back test results for my thyroid, which showed that my levels were off again and we need to raise my dosage of levothyroxin, so perhaps that was the problem and I can get back on track. I was very discouraged to find that my grade for this quarter came back "U" for Unsatisfactory progress (we can either get a U or S for satisfactory). I have eliminated close to 2000 excess articles from my database now, so at least on Monday I will start the new quarter in a better place with that. I also upgraded to NVivo 10, which is supposed to be excellent.

Been fighting my dissertation. I don't like being rejected (not that anybody likes it), I was used to turning in my paper, receiving feedback and moving on to the next assignment. The whole process of writing, rewriting, getting feedback from multiple committee members and conflicting suggestions is quite frustrating. So, I have made a commitment of 30 minutes each day. On day one I expected to work on my first chapter, but I actually made it through 3 chapters. Today I updated my change matrix. Waiting for mentor feedback. I'm ready to resubmit to my committee.

Hi all,

It seems that many of us are struggling as of late. I've made little progress though I'm happy with whatever I can do between my family, my teaching, and my professional service responsibilities.

I had a peer debrief meeting last week and finally had a chance to go through my notes and then look again at some of my transcripts to determine if I was going to code anything differently after thinking through things with someone else. It's always helpful though it can be time consuming.

My other accomplishment is that I sent in my conference paper that is based on my dissertation conceptual framework. Now I've got to get hopping on the presentation since the conference is in a few short weeks.

Hi Blue,
For me, the vast amount of info is most overwhelming. I just mentally shut down. I am using one of the dissertation help sites to categorize and weed out articles also. Have you begun writing at all?

My plan right now is to weed out my database of over 5600 articles so that it is not so overwhelming and so that only the ones that are most important remain. So far, I have gotten rid of close to 300 articles, many of which actually turned out to be duplicates. I also took time this week to re-read some of the non-academic books that inspired me to choose my topic in the first place, as I had lost sight of why I am doing this. What about you?

Thank you for all of the kind words and thoughts and prayers sent my way. You guys are making progress...even a small step in the right direction is getting you closer.

I am halfway through the Fall quarter and have made almost no progress this past month and a half. The drowning and my mom's cancer, along with our own financial problems and my health issues have really distracted me and I am trying to get back on track now.

Very quiet here... where's everybody?
I did another interview yesterday - actually two, a patient and her daughter.
And another patient lost his patience with me and my "philosophical" questionnaires in the middle and refused to continue.

One interview done is better than no interviews, so you're making progress even if it's frustrating.

I finished coding a transcript last night and sent transcripts to my peer debriefer so we can set up a meeting in a few weeks.

The dissertation is taking a backseat for a few days while I grade papers but then it's back to coding and more coding.

Went to rehab yesterday to look for research subjects.
Four potential subjects found, one was at dialysis so unavailable, two were out of their rooms somewhere, one agreed immediately to participate, but the interview took about 50 minutes instead of 15-20 - because he had phone calls from all his distant relatives and had to update them about his health... And I still to interview his daughter-in-law by telephone, she wasn't there yesterday.
So that's all I accomplished.
Grrrrrrrrrrr.

UNIQUEBLUE - So sorry to hear about your mother. I'll continue to send you, your mother, and your entire family good thoughts.

Today, I coded one transcript. I need to write the memo tomorrow since I didn't even get to start reading until my baby went to bed and I'm too tired to gather substantive thoughts into a narrative.

Boy, you are getting it in buckets now. I was so saddened and shocked when I read about your friend's son dying that I could not respond. How can mere words even begin to address such pain... I am so, so sorry. Now, your mom has this new medical issue to deal with and where does that leave you? What are you doing to take acre of you now?
As little as it may do any good, I send you all the healing blessings to soothe you, such as they may.
Please, if there is anything I can do to help, just let me know. If you need a comforting shoulder or need to talk, let me know. I am here for you.

Thank you for your words of encouragement and concern. My mom went in for the post-surgery check-up and found out, to the surprise of the doctor, that the pathology report showed another kind of cancer. They may not have found it in time if they had not done the surgery for the ovarian cancer, as fallopian tube cancer is more rare and harder to detect. It has already spread in her pelvic region and they are not sure how far beyond. She will have at least 6 months of chemo, with the first session last Wednesday. She will lose her hair in around 2 weeks and is feeling very lousy. Please keep my family in prayer. Also, you are right about the stress...it does seem to be making the fibro worse right now.

I apologize for taking so long to respond...I have been away visiting my family and my mom had an emergency surgery while we were there which showed that she had ovarian cancer, so I have been very preoccupied, but I am home now and they believe they were able to remove it all. In answer to the question about the LitReview IQ link, look where it says "Team Stream" on the right side of this page. You can choose what you want to be able to see there, and one of the choices is "Links". If you click that, you should be able to see my link.

I read and coded one transcript, then wrote a memo. I'm trying to code a few transcripts a week since I'm not as far along as I want to be with my Time 1 data analysis.

I am glad to know I am not the only one to get stuck on the lit review. Have you seen the link I posted for the Literature Review HQ? It is a great site for encouragement during the lit review process.

I agree with the stuck on lit review. I finally, desperate for time, did as you are doing now; went to other chapters. This whole process will seem easy once it is over. As for now, GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

Each day we begin again.

It occurred to me today that perhaps, as I have been stuck for so long on the literature review section, I should move to a different section and then come back to the literature review. I had to fight off the feeling that I was giving up or failing by moving away from that section, but find that I have a renewed enthusiasm to work on my dissertation when I know that I do not have to be imprisoned by the literature review for a little while and can be more free in what I choose to work on. Today I am working on the Introduction. I know that in some ways, working on Chapter 1 makes sense to do before Chapter 2, but my previous chair had insisted that we start with the literature review. My new chair, however, recommends that we start with either one of the first two chapters.

Hi All,

The past couple of days haven't been as productive as I would have liked as I've been sick with a sore throat and cough. All my body wants to do right now is rest.

Unfortunately, my lecture schedule doesn't allow for that! Wednesday, I held two seminar classes and today, another. I also managed to squeeze in a bit of work on my lit review chapter revisions, mostly consolidating the material for the new section which I hope to write this weekend.

One good development is that some of the sources that I ordered through interlibrary loan over the holidays have *finally come in. Phew. Just in time!

Today, I finished with one of the sources for my lit review and started in on a second. My goal is to finish with this section of my sources in the next day or two and start drafting the new part of my lit review that will discuss them. I'll then add that to my existing lit review and start restructuring.

Oh! I also biked to and from the café where I worked today for a total round trip of 1 hour.

And I sorted out some horrid registration problems I was having with my home university. I found out they were due to lost paperwork (not lost by me, for once!)

Yesterday, I spent the morning working on the revisions to my lit review requested by my secondary supervisor (reading a few more sources, thinking about how to integrate them into my current framework, etc.)

Then I spent 3.5 hours in a faculty meeting :o/ and another 2.5 hours participating in our college's opening of term ceremony (further :o/).

I *did manage to squeeze in a run yesterday, and of that I am particularly proud.

Yesterday I did not take any time to work on my dissertation. It is so easy to put it off and do other things instead that seem more critical. However, I know I need to make progress on it, so am committed to taking at least 30 minutes today to do some more note-taking on the article I have been reading.

I worked on taking notes on a dissertation that someone wrote that is very close to my own topic. I worked for over a half hour, but still do not feel like I got enough notes taken for the day.

Today, I opened up my dissertation database, reviewed the last document that I was taking notes on before Christmas break, and reviewed the rubric for the literature review posted in my dissertation online classroom. I know this does not sound like a huge accomplishment in and of itself, but I ended up getting very off-track over the Christmas break and completely losing focus on my dissertation, so I think even these small steps are good towards getting my head back into the research. I also count posting here as a step in the right direction, because I truly believe that I will be more successful this quarter with the support of this group.

As for me: my goals for today are to write up my teaching statement, and to program in the extensions to a model I'm working on. I'm spending the morning at home, then heading into the office this afternoon. And I have dinner plans tonight, so the day will be a bit truncated ... but fun. Here's hoping I can be super productive for the next 8 hours or so!

It's definitely difficult to prioritize the dissertation, since it is such a long term thing and there are so many other, more pressing tasks. I think the key is to set aside specific time in the day for dissertation work -- time when you are able to think clearly, etcetera. And be willing to stick to your schedule, no matter how well other work is going. Do the dissertation work for whatever period of time you can afford to dedicate to it, and *really* dedicate the time.

You can do it!

I am very disappointed in myself when I look back over the past week and realize that I accomplished very little and got nothing done on the dissertation in the past two days. I keep saying to myself that I will work on it later, after I get this or that task accomplished. But "later" never comes, or by the time I do try to sit down and do it, my brain is too overloaded and tired to be functional. Perhaps I need to spend some time working on it in the morning, as soon as I have gotten ready for the day.

Today, I remembered how much I love the whole concept and practice of grounded theory and qualitative research and that gave me more of a push towards getting this literature review done so that I can actually get into the heart of the research itself. I also thought more about how to describe the pattern that I used as the basis for my literature review organization. After going back and reading some of the books I have on grounded theory research, I recognized that the outline of my literature review is very similar to the categories traditionally used for axial coding in grounded theory studies, such as context, conditions, actions/interactions, and consequences. I also thought about the way that I have selected literature across multiple fields of study and think that it may make sense to mention this interdisciplinary approach to the literature review and to move the section in which I go through the various disciplines represented into that same place in the introduction to the research strategy in the beginning of the literature review.
