Yes, you are definitely not alone. And, as you mentioned, the urge to snack, the need to spend long periods of time inactive, and the stress of trying to balance so many different responsibilities can all work together to make health issues very relevant for students working on their dissertations.

In many ways it's a relief to read this board, because I struggle with many of the same problems-- most frustrating for me is that whenever I sit down to write, I have what feels like an uncontrollable urge to snack! That, and the usual issues with time management, balancing personal and family life, sedentary work, and struggles with staying motivated in health and writing, are the reasons I wanted to join this team. I look forward to hearing everyone's strategies for staying fit even in the various stages of dissertation writing!

Dee

I share a lot of the same challenges; needing motivation in working on my dissertation and my health/weight loss, being very seditary/sitting at computers all day, and muncing to stay focused on my work. At the beginning of my dissertation I was also diagnosed as ADHD and this past spring I was diagnosed learning disabled, with reading, writing, and processing disabilities. These diagnoses just confirmed what I already suspected, but has made me even moore aware of the challenges I will be facing, since I am just starting on my dissertation. At the same time, I have come too far to quit.

I am glad you have joined us. It is so hard to balance all of those things you mentioned. It is so easy to become distracted and let go of health or dissertation goals.

I just wrote an introduction about myself... so glad to find this team!
I just find it hard to juggle my priorities, involving family (husband, kids, grandkids, aging mother), work (almost full-time), home, health... and the PhD research. I start to lose motivation, which is no good at all. That's why I'm here - for this ongoing motivation to continue!

I joined this team to meet some like minded people that can relate to the stress, and time commitment of completing a dissertation. It looks like a small population, so I'm not sure how active the team is, but I am happy to have earned the right to be a part of it! emoticon

Welcome to the group! I am glad you joined us...the more the merrier! As opposed to regular coursework, the dissertation can be isolating, so it is really important to have people who can understand what we are going through and be a support system.

I am glad you guys have joined this team. I totally understand the urge to munch while working on reading papers, typing, etc. It also can be hard to stop what we are focusing on to exercise. Have you all had trouble with balancing time working on the dissertation (which is definitely a sedentary occupation) with getting enough movement in each day?

My diss is the most stressful thing I have ever done. And I really want to munch while I type. I joined this team to talk about ways to deal with that.

I think what motivated me to join this to team was to have other people's perspective's on trying to be healthier and completing a dissertation. I am in the process of starting to work on my dissertation proposal now and between that, work ,other school stuff and planning a wedding it's crazy trying to fit in exercise! I was hoping for support from other people who could relate.

Welcome to our newest group members! It is so good to not be alone and to find others struggling with the same combination of difficulty with losing weight and with getting their dissertations done. I wish everyone a great week!

I don't know about you all, but when I sit down to write or read papers -- I get the munchies. And I know they are the boredom munchies, which makes writing that much harder. I'm supposed to graduate anywhere from August-December this year so I really do need to kick myself in the butt and get moving.

Also -- have you all seen this website -- its a great distraction/motivation for us grad school:

HI Everyone,,
I found this group when I was searching for one for graduate students. I'm currently wrapping up a research seminar before starting my first semester of dissertation this summer. By the end of my current semester, I will have a completed prospectus as practice for my proposal. I also work and am in the beginning stages of planning a wedding! I'm super busy and i wanted to connect with others who are in the same boat for tips, motivation etc. I have lost about 12 pounds so far and have another 6-10 to go and it's been going so well so far!

Hi All,

I found this group while searching from grad student SparkTeams this afternoon.

It sounds like you're my kind of people ;)

My name is Shannon, and I'm ABD. I'm approximately four months away from completing my PhD in English Literature. I *was supposed to be done by the first week of January, however, 5 days before I was to submit my final copy for my defence/viva, my secondary supervisor *finally read my dissertation (she'd read nothing up to this point) and demanded a whole raft full of changes. Over Christmas I was heartbroken and angry -- My secondary supervisor has been completely unengaged with my project quite literally for years, and my primary supervisor, rather than backing me up when I claimed some of the changes surely weren't necessary at such a later date, chose to support my secondary supervisor.

I'm over that mostly now and just want to focus on finishing. Several friends and colleagues have suggested I seek some kind of disciplinary action, but I honestly don't think it's the right solution. I'd rather spend the time and use the energy finishing my PhD than prolonging it through endless ombudsman meetings etc.

What I'm looking for is a support group where I can check in from time to time, offer encouragement, seek advice, and just generally talk to other folk who are facing the same kind of challenges I am.

Like a couple of you have mentioned, it's an isolating process, and for me it was made more so by my moving to a different country than my home institution is in! Most of my supervisor contact is via email and so it's super important to me to find a group of people I can check in with regularly.

I'm also looking to take better care of my health. I struggle on and off with depression and sometimes the stress and trouble of my PhD doesn't help. I know that if I work out consistently and eat well, I handle it all so much better. That's the reason I joined SparkPeople. While I'd like to lose 20lbs, what's more important to me is to be healthy and happy. If weight loss happens along the way, that's fantastic, but it's not my primary goal.

At the rate things are going, I should be defending sometime in March or April. I want to walk into that room healthy and confident and come out with my PhD (metaphorically) in hand.

Not sure what else to add, but I'm looking forward to meeting you all.

Good luck!

Everything you mentioned in your post fits my situation to a "T" as well. It is so hard sometimes to be consistent and remain focused and motivated when living in a state of limbo, on our own most of the day, and without as much of a schedule as we are used to. What kind of exercising are you doing? Have you found it easier to stick with certain types of exercises?

First I will say thanks for starting this team! What a great idea. I am joining, basically, for all the reasons UniqueBlue listed for starting this forum. I too am stuck on the literature review phase of my dissertation. I am ABD and haven't even proposed yet. I decided to try not working so I could focus "all" of my energies toward dissertation. So far, it is NOT working. I feel lost and aimless most days. I am productive some days but I feel like I am "wasting" a lot of time. Over the past few weeks, I have been trying to get some kind of exercise/fitness program going. I did pretty well for the first 2 weeks but I am slipping this week. I am alone most of the day until my partner gets home from work so I often feel isolated (also don't know many people in my community as I new here). The exercising really helps me to feel more motivated and focused. I would like support for maintaining that. Look forward to hearing from others.

I decided to start this team because I know how helpful and encouraging the teams here on SparkPeople can be for those attempting to make healthier choices and change the way that they live their lives. I did see that there were several teams available for students, and for graduate students in particular, but I wanted to have a team that was not just focused on encouraging members to make healthier choices while completing their education, but also on taking positive steps towards completing their dissertations. The dissertation stage is often one that has less boundaries and requires much more independent work, requiring a level of personal discipline greater than any other phase of graduate work.

I have been struggling personally with being stuck for months on just the Literature Review, which has held me up from completing my proposal. I also have struggled with maintaining my health while doing so, but knew that having a team of people to hold me accountable, to provide mutual encouragement, and to share in this journey together would help me to reach my goals.
