I do not have a protein shake on rest days. My DH said that having to much protein will cause a gain (he is an ex bodybuilder, so he has been helping me alot). On rest days I get most of my protein from real food.

We should continue with the higher protein on rest days. However, it's up to you whether you want to get the protein from real food or protein shakes.

I might have some bars for a regular meal but don't usually have shakes on rest days, unless I'm extra hungry or up pretty late.

Are you still having protein shakes/bars on rest days? Is this still helping build muscle ? I just don't know if too much protein is a good thing if I don't need it
