Now life gets tricky!
It's Payday, which means I can get some groceries! That should be liberating, right? Not so much. I need to buy food that travels well as we're gone for an average of about 11 hrs per day with no scheduled lunch or snack breaks. Moments do come and go throughout the day which allow for a quick snack. With such a demanding schedule and the fact that I'm learning to drive a 54' bus, I NEED to try to try to stay away from foods that can cause allergic reactions, which for me are killer migraines. The stress level is already high enough that I don't need to add dietary stress.
SOOOO, what are these foods that I can eat? LOL Brown rice or brown rice pasta, some cooked vegetables, sour dough spelt bread ( have no idea of where to buy any around here, but will check the yellow pages to see if there's any where near here - walking everywhere that I'm not driving or riding a bus at the company's expense), almonds and almond butter, eggs, plain yogurt, cooked tomatoes, turkey, water. Running out of options.
NO fruit, NO starchy veggies, including root veggies, NO onions, NO mushrooms, NO soy, NO dairy except for previously mentioned yogurt, NO chocolate, NO sugar, NO vinegar, NO alcohol, NO yeast, NO wheat, NO meat other than turkey...... when I first saw the list, I just read "NO FOOD" and nearly cried.
The next dilemma is that I'm living in a motel for five more weeks. I have a bar fridge with the very tiny freezer compartment that's half full of un-defrosted ice, and a microwave.
Obviously something has to give. I'll have to make some compromises in my food choices. The big problem is that shopping with these food allergies is like shopping with a ticking time bomb in hand. Buying foods on my yes list buys me mintues (or days) and buying foods on my no list takes migraine-free time away from me. If I could find a place to buy sour dough spelt bread and almond butter, I can live quite happily on that for some time. The biggest trick with it then would be the fact that it must be kept frozen and it won't fit in my freezer unless perhaps I get some zipper sandwhich bags and portion the whole loaf out. (thinking on the keyboard is sometimes quite beneficial!)
ACK! Thankfully, I don't start work today until 12 noon. Cab is coming at 11:15. We're giving them extra time as the cabbie had us late, yesterday. :-( I only had less than 4 hrs sleep, so I will need to try to get some rest before we leave. I'm only going to have so much time to chase down my groceries before Sunday and health food stores may not even be open on Sundays. :-(
I'll have to look for "instant" brown rice or a way to microwave it or something. The package I do have doesn't say any thing about being microwaveable. Rice and some veggies and perhaps a bit of olive oil might be ok. Then I need a way to package it. LOL I have a couple of small containers and some dish soap - I might try to wash my dishes in the hand sink. (not crazy about that idea, but might be better than nothing.)
Obviously I have my work cut out for me. :p
