Old encyclopaediae aren't much in demand it seems. I grew up with the Books of Knowledge and Encycl. Brittanica (1950's/60's) , which opened up the world at that time to an isolated rural kid. Could not even give them away forty years later when cleaning out the old homestead.
Anyone remember Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In ('70's TV show) catch phrase "Look that up in your Funk & Wagnall's"

Stephanie - regarding your encyclopedias: The libraries and Salvation Army won't take these. Neither will used bookstores. Here are some things you can do: 1) There is an organization called "freecycle.org" They have outlets all over the world. They believe in putting to use good things that can be recycled. I checked (you input your location) for Windsor, and there are plenty of postings. 2) Try posting on Kijiji. It's free. There is one for the Windsor region. 3) If you use ebay, then you could try posting with them, but you would need an account. 4) Interior decorators sometimes use these. 5) You could try an art college. The students would use the pages for projects. 6) If you go to church, talk to your minister/priest and ask about their programs for welcoming immigrants from other countries into Canada. They might appreciate the free reference works. Your local community might also have such a place. Hope this helps you out.

I'm at home today with my 2 two year old grand daughters ....already have gone for a walk,,,,but now I need a nap....hope they do too.

Welcome Janice.
I'm off to the hairdressers. I've got it rigged so that if I don't wear bangs or layers, and keep it to one length, I only have to go once every 4 months.
Am I the only person who has noticed that beauty (read also glorified "spas") parlour prices have gone through the ceiling? Yikes!

I love reading and fresh asparagus. You and I would get along Charlotte. When DH and I moved I to our condo we had to get rid of our books and I can tell you it is not easy any longer. No one wants hardcovers. Our books were like new and we had to give them away. We now both read on a kindle and I am surprised that I like it and no more books to find space for. We still occasionally buy books but it is rare . Today I was suppose to golf but we cancelled due to rain but tomorrow I am golfing rain or shine! Yikes! I don't like golfing in the rain when it is cool out. Oh well it will make me stronger! I am washing today and catching up around here. Also will have to get some exercise in. Have a good one ladies!!!

We're "over-booked" and under organized here too, Honouria and me a trained librarian (before computers) Used book sales are my downfall - no matter how many I donate to the cause, I always come home with more. Sun is out after a rainy holiday weekend. Lawn mowing on the agenda this week for sure. Massage this morning. Fresh asparagus for lunch Shaping up to be a good day

Organized SOME of my books today - at least now I can see the mirror on my dresser (we do have lots of bookcases, but more books than cases. Sigh. We even have half a room with built in shelves. In fact, other than the bathrooms, all of the rooms have books in them!
Anyways, my collection is a mess and I have to spend time on it. Its one of those projects you do in steps or else it doesn't get done.

Hey there everyone,
I had a very productive day, cleaned cupboards, cleaned the fridge, mopped the floor, cleaned DH vehicle and then painted. Not so successful with painting -a whole tray of paint hit the floor ( plastic thank heaven caught it all). We are painting the inside of our garage (and me) I don't know how people can paint and not get any on them.
I ate very healthy today and I will walk to work tomorrow so maybe there will be some weight lose to record on Thursday.
Time to clean up and go work in my basement at my business.
Anjays - sorry to hear about the eggs.
Stay strong.

Will take them back out and see what happens Hope everyone had a great Victoria Day

Hi all, Charlotte we did BBQ this weekend and it was yummy. Today we are doing a chicken. I take the backbone out and put seasoning under the skin then DH cooks it. It is so yummy and leftovers are great. So that is supper today along with a big salad and some other veggies. I am going to make sure I get outside today as the rain is coming here starting tomorrow and suppose to last about a week. Yuk! DH was not feeling well yesterday so I think I will be going out myself. Have a good day all!!!!

Dull rainy evening but, on the bright side, my tulips are blooming - what a colourful show! Trees are becoming greener by the minute... Anjay - these supervision jobs are very important! Glad things are better for you. You must be counting the days till your trip. Stephanie - congrats on the new grandbaby. Pat - glad to hear you're taking it easy this weekend. You'll feel better for it. Donna - so you have a non-cook DH too! Well, mine does make his own breakfast (oatmeal) & zap leftovers in the microwave. Everything else is my domain - works better that way! Did anyone fire up the BBQ this w/e? We don't have one, but have enjoyed many cookouts at friends homes and camping.

First of all Stephanie, welcome to the new baby. Awesome to have a new grandchild. Boy or girl? Isn't it amazing how fast these new Moms recuperate? Will your daughter be at your home today? We were not even out of the hospital yet. Katheryn sorry your feeling so lousy with allergies. I am so lucky that I have not experienced that but I sure do see people suffering. I don't have a DH who s ores either. Happy on both counts. Well today I am off to my ball class then DH just announced that we will be going to Granville Island. I love going there just to walk around and especially the market. They make everything look so delicious. And it is suppose to be nice today. Yeah! Have a good day all.

Hi,
I am up late waiting for my husband to go to sleep as once I get into bed the orchestra kicks in especially with my spring allergies.
Donna way to go on the weight lose .
Patricia I hope you are feeling better. I guess I should have phoned you today.
Charlotte ironing is a thankless job. My Mom used to put the ironing board up in the living room and watch ..."The Edge of Night". It made ironing a little easier to swallow.
I had a great day spent some time with a forever friend, planted flowers and ate an amazing supper that my husband cooked.
Tomorrow we are off fishing and kayaking.
Everyone else I hope that you have a restful weekend and be kind to yourselves.

Just time for a quick hi - just finished the supper dishes and taking a break before tackling the last of the ironing - for this week. Times like this I wish DH wore t-shirts! A Black Lace Elderberry shrub seedling arrived in the mail today - I have something to plant when the rain stops! Don't think there'll be much gardening done this weekend as the soil is still quite cold. Still lots of cleanup and raking to do. Enjoy the long weekend everyone, whatever the weather!

Hi all, well it looks all us challengers lost weight this week. I got on the scale this am and had to do it twice as I did not believe it was right..... 2 lbs. so I am thinking that it isn't!! We will see what happens next week. I think maybe it goes off a little then you get those weeks when it is more. It is the final number that counts after many weeks. Anjay it is getting close to your takeoff! Don't wear yourself out. Steph I would love to grow herbs on my deck but we face north and most of them prefer the sun. Basil is out but I di grow parsley and rosemary. I love and use both of them a lot. We are not going to have. Great long weekend but there will be some sunny spots so we just have to make sure we take advantage of them. Pat I hope you are feeling better soon. And you are right, tracking sure does make us more aware of what we are eating. I think it works for me. I do it all the time. Charlotte I wish I could grow rhubarb and asparagus. My MIL use to grow strawberry rhubarb.....it was so sweet. I made a rhubarb crisp this week and did have a very little bit. It was so good. You will be gardening soon, don't worry! Well ladies I am off to do a few errands just waiting for the dryer to stop. Have a good day all!!

Greetings,
Way to go Patricia! I get that you make bad choices when it comes to food and not Feeling well. Does this come from our childhood I don't remember Mom giving us anything bad when we were sick.
Charlotte I will be thinking of you and your surgery.
Stephanie did you feel the quake in Windsor?

Hi Everyone,
I am so excited. Despite the fact that I haven't been feeling well enough to do all my walking I have lost 1.2 lbs. Maybe coughing does count an exercise. I am so excited - I haven't don't that well in ages.
I will post later on this evening but I just had to share this with all of you! The first week of my challenge has been a success in so many ways. Not just the weight loss - the fact that I stayed on track with my food choices even though I was feeling crappy. Quite often that would be the time for me to pig out on all the wrong things.
Have a good day everyone. The alarm has gone off signalling to my cats that if I am up it is to serve them. They might just starve to death if I don't. Have a great day! - Pat

Have spent most of the day outdoors on the deck with my 2 two year old gds.....other than their naps we have had a great day....eating lunch & snacks, walking and just having a good time.....love this weather....
Charlotte I have no plans for this weekend....we are all on alert mode until my youngest dd has her baby....she is now over due and expecting any day......this baby boy is taking his time....
Anjay....hope you are still relaxing you... walked quite a ways in your geocaching journey....
Donna enjoy your golfing....I also have a small garden....our backyard is small, so I plant flowers & herbs in big pots around the deck....adds color and a wonderful scent.....(mint, bay leaves, etc).

Hi all, nice to hear all the news. For some reason I have not been on here for a few days. Not sure what that is all about. Today I had my ball class, then went for a haircut then finally got all my flowers for planting this weekend. Did not want to leave it any longer as I am sure the nurseries will be crazy this weekend. I usually buy my begonias at Costco and have been there three times and they still don't have any. So I went somewhere else and ....mission accomplished. So I will be busy. It is very different container gardening. I use to have a big yard with lots of flowers so the spring was very busy and very expensive. Still love my flowers though. Pat sorry to hear you have a cold. It sure makes you feel awful...you just want to curl up and sleep. I hope you feel better for the weekend. Anjay I read your blog yesterday and can't believe you guys walked that far. Awesome!! You must be getting excited about your trip. When do you leave? I am sure it will be lots of fun. Maybe you can do some geocaching there. Stephanie it is hard to look out the window when it is so nice and you have to be inside. I sure remember those days. Charlotte that's too bad that you are going to need hip surgery but it is so common nowadays and there is so much success with it. There is a team here that is for hip and knee Sparkers. You might want to check it out. There is lots of good info from these ladies. Well I am off. Will be golfing to orrow so will check in later tomorrow. stef and Pat now is the challenge going. We have our first weigh in Saturday. By all.....

I just can't get enough of that wonderful sun! A little breezy but gorgeous temp outside.
for all your sympathy- all those vibes helped for sure, as my sciatic pain is much reduced. Still feeling pretty fragile though & have been sleeping a lot. Saw the doc yesterday - CT scan results show right hip replacement needed. The good news is that, aside from being 100 pounds overweight, I'm healthy as a horse, or at least a horse with one hip destroyed by osteoarthritis. If ever there's an an incentive to get those pounds off this is it. This is me being determined
Pat - darn those "summer colds"! You're doing the right thing for a speedy recovery tho. Honouria - Chair exercises really work well, especially using the stretchy resistance bands. Even yoga can be adapted, so you'll find you can get a good workout.
Greetings to Donna, Anjay, Kathryn, Stephanie, Janine and all the other Sparkies on this journey with us.

Hello Ladies
It is a beautiful day here in Dauphin - sunny, blue sky and a little rain - not a lot. Birds are singing it is almost perfect. The reason I say almost is that I have to enjoy it from inside. I stayed home from work with a "Summer cold". I went to work yesterday but I just felt like I needed to stay home and rest and maybe just maybe it would go away. I have slept most of the morning and will probably do again later on. It is so frustrating - I make it through a cold winter - everyone I work with gets the flue and then when spring finally does arrive I get a cold. Oh well enough complaining.
Charlotte on your performances - I am glad it when well for you and all the cast. I hope you start to feel better soon so that you can enjoy your upcoming vacation.
Kathryn I am glad you had a great time with your family-in-law on mother's day. I am sure you will walk off the extra food in a day or so.
Honouria - way to go with your exercise program. I think I will check out the chair exercises for work. I try to move around as much as possible but it won't hurt to add a few more moves.
Stephanie and Dauphin - so far I have been doing great with my challenge but I don't think I will meet my exercise goal for today - just don't feel up to it. But I am trying to stay focused on eating so maybe that will balance out.
Stephanie have fun with your gd's - if that doesn't get your exercise minutes racked up nothing well.
Anyway hello to everyone reading the posts. Have a wonderful day! - Pat

Charlotte you have my sympathies. I have had that in my legs and man does it hurt! I don't think there are many pains worse. It makes me scream (hard to control too.)
I have had THE best day. I started exercising (haven't in years) and feel pretty proud of me'self - the result of the Chair Exercise team. They are super!
That, and my husband was just so sweet to me today. Gotta luv it :-)

Greeting, I had a great weekend - not so good when it came to food. Spent time with my in-laws and enjoyed my little great niece (2) belting out Jesus Loves You at the nursing home where we went to sing. What do you all think of Chris Hatfield foray in space? Charlotte I hope you start feeling better. Kathryn - stay strong

Honouria - thanks for asking. I sing with the Quarry Choristers, a women's choir that writes and produces an annual musical dinner theatre as well as other "gigs" throughout the year, raising $$ for community causes. 8th and final show was last night & I'm now in recovery mode.
Sciatica kicked in big time last night - having a hard time walking & no position is comfy, so am glad I have a doc's appointment tomorrow pm.
Happy Mother's Day to all!

Shopping day today and I was so pooped that I ordered take out - beef and baked potato; no junk. That and piles of laundry, so now I am clean and stocked.
Pedicure tomorrow - oh joy. That and waxing legs. My one treat to myself at the esthetician, because this is way too hard for me to do. I am deliberately modest with my hair cuts so that I can do this luxury.
That's what I get for walking barefoot. Does anybody else do this? In winter I do wear slippers, but the rest of the year....hence the pedicure. I know, I know....LOL!

Hello my friends,
I am so glad it is Friday. Today we had rain in Dauphin - but it is needed just to clean the dust away from everything and then the wind picked up. We had rain and wind again this evening but it seems to have settled down. Tomorrow is supposed by sunny - if you don't like the weather around here just stick around it changes often.
I would love to brag and say I lost weight this week but I didn't. I really thought I would because I had done more exercise this past week than I had in a long time but I am still struggling with my meal choices. It can only get better.
Donna & Stephanie all the best with your Challenge - I hope we can all have great results.
Anyway folks I have to plan my meals in preparation for the challenge so I am going to sign off for now. I will try and check in tomorrow. Have a wonderful weekend! - Pat

Greetings, I was chuckling at you description Honouria as that is exactly what I was called when I moved to a small Mennonite town after I got married!
The conference was very challenging this afternoon but very encouraging. This evening's speaker was a comedian Kate Davis - very funny. I go back down tomorrow for more learning and growth.
Stay strong.

Kathryn on your weight loss. Glad your hip is feeling better.
Honouria I laughed at your description of life in the Maritimes. It is much the same here in Dauphin - I have lived here since 1993 and I am still not considered a Dauphinite because I was not born here and I don't have family here. If I had children who had been born here they would be considered Dauphinites. Funny how things are in some places.
Stephanie I am glad that you are feeling better.
Charlotte I hope you are feeling better so you can enjoy your trip. Congratulations on your successful Theatre Presentation.
Donna I hope you doing well. Hello to all of those we have not heard from in a while: Estelle, Dorene, Tracy, Kathy, Mary, Janine. Everyone reading these posts all the best! Pat

Afternoon :) For anyone unacquainted with the Maritimes, you need to know that if somebody asks what part of the province you come from, if you aren't FROM here, then you are doomed because then any other answer means you're "from away". Guaranteed to make a big silence while nobody says anything inoffensive, LOL. If you were to name a local location, then you get the 50 question Spanish Inquisition about "oh do you know so-and-so." It's amazing. They have nepotism down pat here.
No - I am a transplant since 2001. And they still consider me an outsider because I'm "from away." That only works if you don't have enormous talent, a lot of money, professional degrees or super connections. Otherwise.... you're "from away."
Ah, the local colour and charm. It is in other regards, however, a wonderful place to live. Peace, quiet, security, friendly natives, healthy food, fish and lots of water!
regards, Honouria

Agree about dust being a nasty four-letter word - hard to ignore after awhile though. I keep hoping the good elves will swing by & clean up my accumulations, but no luck so far.
last round of performances start tonight, with me snuffling & coughing with a cold but the show must go on right? Got through the whole long winter flu/cold free & now that spring is here waaa poor me! There, that feels better! Another lovely warm day in store looks like. Whatever the weather where you are, get outside and sniff the air!

Hello,
It was cooler day here in Manitoba but still a good day for walking outside. I also did some raking so I think sleep should come quickly tonight.
Donna how is your knee doing? Hope you get some answers from your x-rays.
Charlotte you must be just about finished with your Dinner theatre presentations and getting ready to travel. Your kitties are going to miss you or maybe they will stow away in your luggage.
Honouria - glad you are enjoying warm weather - I hope it is not so hot that you can't enjoy some time outside.
Kathryn I just want to remind you that "dust" is a nasty four letter word and we were taught not to use those maybe that is why you dislike the job. I am glad you are getting back into the routine of walking to work. Enjoy!
Anjay there is nothing like getting all the crazy stuff over and done with in one day - I hope the rest of the week goes better for you! Keep smiling - it will make people wonder what you have been up to!
Stephanie - I hope you are feeling better tomorrow. Maybe a good nights sleep will help!
All the best to anyone reading this post. Have a wonderful sleep!

Hello everyone. Well a visit to the chiropractor to put my hip back in - it sure feels better. Not sure what I did to it.
I cleaned my house on Saturday but we left the windows open on Sunday and now I need to dust again. I am not sure why I dislike dusting so much.
I walked to work two days in a row so am getting my exercise in. It feels so wonderful to be outside.
My tulips are blooming - now it feels like spring.
Have a great day.

Pat Our minds sure don't age as fast as the rest of us does. As long as I don't look in a mirror, I think I'm still 32. Except for today, but it's only 6 am. The kitties decided it was breakfast time - for them! Not sure what else is on the agenda for today except for ironing, & raking the garden. Donna & Pat for all the "stepping". Inspires me to strap on the old pedometer. Have a great day everyone.

Donna - Tuesdays are good days for doing 10000 Steps - I walk to work - I average about 2000 steps at work - I walk down town after work and clean a building and then I walk back home. That is usually good for 9000 steps. But today I did a lot more walking at work than usual so that is how I managed 10000 steps with out doing extra walking. Normally I have to put in extra work to get 10000 or more.
It Is always good to listen to your body although sometimes it mine lies - it tells me that I am 25 until I try doing something that only a 25 year old can actually do.
Hope your knee is feeling better soon! - Pat

Hi all, it was nice here today also but not as warm as yesterday. I took it a little easy today......my body was telling me it needed a rest. This time yesterday I had over 15000 steps and today I am just a little over three. I have been busy doing stuff around the house, went for an X-ray on my knee then home to make dinner. I will pick it up again tomorrow. Pat how do you put on 10000 steps and not go out??? That is impressive. Anjay you should post some pics of your hard work! Well ladies, I am going to finish my Sparking then read my book for awhile. Have a good evening

Hi Everyone - another nice day in Manitoba. It is quit windy today so I am going to pass on the outdoor walk as it is very dusty. I have done 10,000 steps and counting today so I am happy with that.
I have to get off my butt and do some work around the house so I am going to do just that. I might check in later. Keep smiling!

Hello everyone especially to all the newbies....
Charlotte it sounds like your performances are going very well.
Stephanie we had a day with 27 degree temps after complaining about snow two weeks ago. I went to a park today and there had to be 150 people there.
Stephanie you asked me to post a picture of the mirror I made but I am not seeing any way to do that. Do you or anyone's else know how to do this task.
I walked to work today the first time in months - felt awesome.
Enjoy way our week.

HI Everyone,
Spring and Summer arrived on the same day - I think I will mark it on the calendar just in case it leaves again.
Anyway Donna and Stephanie I finally found out what team I am on for the challenge - I am a Firecracker! All the best in your challenge!
Anjay thanks for sharing your recipes - I emailed them to myself at work and ran them off - it was easier than writing them down off the screen - I don't have a printer at home.
Charlotte - you are going to be so tired when you are done - but it is a good kind of tired. I know what you mean about pouting kitties - they do it as well as any child.
I just had my first real great walk outdoors - I like to walk in the fair grounds because it is soft ground to walk on and it is only a couple of blocks from my house. So I just did 2 miles in 50 minutes. It felt so good!
Well to everyone reading this post - hope you are having a great day!

Good morning (I think it's still morning ) Back to real life today ie. a sink full of dirty dishes, pouting kitties, overflowing laundry basket, empty fridge... Oh well - with the last three shows & then my trip east to look forward to plus such a gorgeous warm sunny week coming up - it's easy to stay positive. Also, reading everyone's posts helps too. All that energy is really motivating.
to WOODSY18 & Nancy; Looking forward to getting to know you and cheering you on to reach your goals.
Hi to Donna, Anjay, Pat, Katherine, Janine, Stephanie - have a Spark-ling week! And to Estelle, Dorene, Mary, Florence, Tracy & others we haven't heard from lately Hope all is going well.

Hi all, welcome to all our new people. It is wonderful to have new faces in our group. Myjuly2013 and Woodsey.....original names for sure. Let us know more about you.....where you are from and your name if you want. As the others have said, this is a wonderful supportive group and we are here for you. Just ask if you need anything. Pat and Stephanie have you got your invites for the challenge yet. I am once again a Teddy Bear. Glad about that as I am getting to know the others now. It is so nice here today.....20 at 10:30 this am. So now I am sparking then going to clean my patio and it put the furniture. We live in a condo with no place to put anything so the cushions are in the bathtub in the main bathroom.....curtains drawn of course. Oh how I miss having more space. I think a BBQ will be in order for supper. I was a t the gym this am and did the hardest class ever. Not sure I will be mobile tomorrow,,, gotta love pushing ourselves. Ps....dinner with DS and DIL last evening was wonderful. It is so nice to be looked after! Have a good day all!!!

The Sun is shining the sky is the blue the grass is green where there isn't any snow. It is 21 C - I think spring might have actually arrived here is Dauphin -
Sorry to inform you Stephanie - "working your buns off" is just as expression - it doesn't mean anything when it comes to losing weight so I guess you and I will definitely have to give it our all in the upcoming challenge.
Charlotte - so glad to hear that your Dinner Theater is such as success - it definitely makes all your hard work leading up to it worth it. Congratulations!!
Anjay thanks for sharing the recipes - I can't wait to try them.
Welcome Sharon - glad you decided to join this great group of Friends. Enjoy the sunshine.
Way to go on your weight loss Donna! It sounds like you are getting close to your goal - that is pretty exciting.
Hi Honouria - I am not hearing lawnmowers here yet but I am sure people are out raking - I know I will be doing that soon. It is so nice to have warm weather to enjoy finally.
MYJULY2013 - welcome you have joined a great group of encouraging people. We will be happy to share in your weight loss journey!
Kathryn I can't wait to see the completed redesign of your bathroom. That is so exciting that you framed your own mirror - not many people can say that.
Yesterday was a tough day for me - I wasn't feeling well so I confess I didn't do very well when it came eating or exercising but today is a new day and I am making plans to be successful in the upcoming challenge so I am just going to do better today. This afternoon I am going to join a friend for a walk.
To everyone reading this post hello - have a wonderful Sunday afternoon and all the best as you work toward your goals.

Hi all, my oh my it is a glorious day. The sun is shining and I want to get out and enjoy it. We are going to our sons for dinner today. It is their Mothers Day dinner as they cannot do it next weekend. So i am just fine with that. And the best part is I don't have to cook tonight. We are going to get out and enjoy this day for sure. WHOO HOO for me.......lost 1/2 lb this week. Don't want to lose much more so this slow pace is good. Enjoy yor day everyone. And thanks Anjay dor the recipes. Now where do you all get your quinoa?

Donna, I'm hoping for a loss too - if I can stay away from the backstage snacks! Fortunately they're in a separate room. Show two went well, DH & some of our friends were there & aside from inadequate air conditioning in the auditorium, really enjoyed themselves. I don't feel nearly as sore and tired as yesterday morning, but still must remember to pace myself. Absolutely gorgeous day here too - sweater weather! Thanks for the quinoa recipes, Anjay. They sound delish. Off to finish the ironing. At least that's one job I can do sitting down.
Have a great weekend everyone.

Welcome Sharon always nice to hear from someone new.
Charlotte congrats on your opening night
I had a very different day. I went and stayed at my mother-in-law's place last night ( first time in 23 years of marriage) and then drove her to Saskatoon to catch a plane.
I worked at my home based business today. I am a picture framer and one of the highlights of the day was I framed a great mirror for my own bathroom. It will be the finishing touch to a renovated bathroom.
I had a bad day with regards to food but it did get better as the day went on.
Enjoy your weekend and stay strong.
Kathryn

Ingredients 1 cup dry quinoa, rinsed 28 oz can stewed tomatoes 2 cups water 1 cup frozen corn 1 large green zucchini, chopped 1 large red pepper, chopped 1 8oz pkg white button mushrooms, sliced 1 can black beans, rinsed 1/2 tsp onion powder 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes 1/4 tsp garlic powder 1/4 tsp cumin 6 tbsp grated Parmesan or Romano cheese
Directions Place quinoa in a large saucepan with 2 cups water and stewed tomatoes. Bring to boil and simmer until liquid is absorbed, about 15 minutes. Add in black beans and all veggies and spices. Boil until veggies are tender. Serve with a sprinkle of grated Parm on top. Play around with different veggies and spices to make it your own! It's hard to mess it up!
