Charlie's foot seems to be coming along nicely. He isn't walking which probably helps. Just too darn hot for him I think. When he last went, he wouldn't listen to me to stop unless or until he could do so in the shade. He is one smart cookie, that's for sure.

He did get the cooler fixed. Thank goodness lol. Hope soaking Charlie's food does the trick!

Thanks Whippetwalker. I will check with my vet. Right now Charlie seems to be working on an infection on his back right foot. I'm going to try soaking it this weekend and see if I can prevent it from getting to the point we have to go to the vet. I'm fairly sure it started with that foot drag sore so that stuff you mentioned would be perfect.

Jeanne, I totally understand your thoughts about Alice. I tell my dogs that when the time comes, I will do right by them but it is always a difficult decision. Hope Dennis got the cooler up and running. That seems odd to me today as we are at a cool 55 this morning. Rumor has it we'll get to 75 today. Hard to believe when I went out this morning.

My thoughts are with you and Alice. I am glad that she is hanging in. I hope that she is doing better.

Charlie is the other one that I am thinking about.
Java had some more surgery on his shoulder to fix up the area where they removed his left front leg. He runs around at top speed and occasionally crashes in to the turf. This resulted in damage to the skin and tissue. Big swollen mess. The surgery removed some bones that were digging into the skin and an area of damaged skin to the tune of 38 staples. Yes, he was very Frankenstein's monster. Much better now. The vet Rx ed Derma Gel Spray to apply to the skin that was sutured. to help recovery. . Whippet skin is thin and can tear easily. Because it is a spray it was easy to apply to the area (stitches) and seemed to help. Package blurb " Supports the natural defences of the skin , acts as a bandage, and is non-toxic if licked." If this sounds like something that would help Charlie you can check it out. www.vetoquinol.ca Canadian company in Quebec. Your vet may know of this product. Please let me know if you want any more information.

Alice is hanging in there. She ate most of her food last night, and a bit of chicken this morning, but she is walking very slow. Mostly sleeping. We are taking it day by day.

How is Alice doing? Has she been eating better? I hope that she is well. I think about older dogs when it is so hot outside. Sounds like it is very hot where you live. We live in Toronto, Canada and the heat waves really slow us down. My old guys would often go off their food during a heat wave. I made special tempting food, only for them to eat a few bites and then stop. As long as they were drinking water and peeing and pooping they were good . They were not active and liked to lounge around the AC. When it cooled down, eating resumed. I wish they could tell us what is going on. Wouldn't that be nice?!

I bet the heat doesn't help. Poor Alice.

Charlie's feet seem okay now. He hasn't bled anymore though I can see the sore. I'd like to put something like Bacitracin on it but I think he'd just lick it off.

How is Charlie's foot tonight? Poor guy. He sure has had problems with his feet.
Alice ate most of her food tonight, but still seems depressed. It is very hot here which I sure doesn't help any. Even with our cooler going. After I got home, I walked into the front room, and oh warm!. I turned on the portable cooler. That has helped. We just have to keep a eye on our poor girl.

I never thought of using that stop-bleeding stuff. I even have some of that in the cupboard. Charlie didn't walk yesterday so that seems to have helped that sore scab over.

Does Alice seem in any distress? I'm hoping and praying all is well or at least not serious when her test results are all in. Hope she goes #2 soon. I would think that canned food might make it less likely -- not enough bulk.

I have never had that problem (knock on wood) I know there is a medicated power to stop bleeding, if it is still bleeding. I can't remember the name though. The Vet should know.

Alice Kidney's are a bit off. The rest of the blood work isn't back yet. They took a X-ray on her stomach/colon, but we won't know the results of that until tomorrow. She was a bit dehydrated today, so they gave her a shot of water under her skin. More canned dog food for a soft diet. To our knowledge she still hasn't done her #2. That's what I am worried about. I'm hoping she will go soon. Sure hope she doesn't have a blockage, or a tumor we can't see. We should know more tomorrow. Oh, and we brought home pills to encourage her appetite. She's eating right now, so that is good.

I'm glad to hear Alice ate. Do you hear from the vet today, Jeanne?

Molly slept in her bed last night. First time since the fireworks began around here. She seems to be feeling much better now. I'm a bit surprised because the city's fireworks were loud last night but I'm just happy she's feeling better.

I found blood on the bedroom carpet this morning. I knew it was the spot I had just seen Charlie sitting. I gave his feet a quick check and didn't see anything. Worried it was coming from somewhere else, I went out and picked up a poop I'd just seen him do and checked that for blood. Whew!! None there. Then when I fed the two, I noticed a sore on Charlie's back foot by his outside nail. I know that's from dragging his feet. Any ideas to heal it?

I just watered my garden and now it is raining. LOL I'll take it though as we have been dry for several days now. Of course that was after we'd been drenched for a couple of weeks.

We had Alice at the Vet today. She has been eating very sporadic. They did a senior panel blood work. They ruled out Pancreatitis while we were there. We won't get the results on the other until Wed. They want us to keep Alice on a bland diet, and they sent home a special canned diet. She did eat half of the can tonight, but won't take a treat. So still picky. She is drinking enough water, so that is good. Her stomach is a bit tender. Her heart and lungs sounded good. So they are testing for liver or kidney problems. Or it just could be her innards are upset for some reason. That has happened with her 2 yrs. ago, and we never knew why.
The Vet couldn't figure it out either. Like you have said before, always something. Our poor dogs!

Molly spent the night on edge. DH did take her outside a couple of times but she barely stepped outside. I'd rather he not take her out for fear she'd run but she seems to handle her fear by wanting to be inside. I'm glad for that. I hope "they" get it out of their system by tomorrow and we can rest easy once again.

Charlie has sores on his feet again but I think they are scrapes. I see he is dragging those back feet quite a bit. I'm sure that's from his back troubles and I can identify now.

I wish you the best!!

It's the scary days right now for Miss Molly. Booms and bangs she doesn't understand and they started early for the 4th this year. She is laying at my feet right now on high alert. Poor thing. Charlie was never much bothered and now that he is losing his hearing, he really isn't bothered. The cat doesn't seem to worry about anything.

Sad to see you in that much pain. What exactly will they do to correct your pain? I'm sure the dogs sense something is going on. They are always in tune with their owners.

Hi Janet, I am sorry to hear that you may need back surgery. Hopefully everything goes well and you have a speedy recovery. The nice thing about dogs is that will stick by you when you are recovering. After my knee replacement surgery we watched a lot of animal planet! Having someone to walk them is a relief . I hope you are well.

I think when a person starts hurting enough, surgery isn't such an awful thought anymore. I was thinking today that at Easter I was able to stand without difficulty and could walk but I needed to be careful about carrying anything heavy or cumbersome. Now, I can't manage to stand long enough to prepare a meal. Walking is difficult but I am still managing to walk the dogs fairly well. I think I use the leashes to help me stabilize. I wonder if I'm sending odd messages down the leash sometimes. Well, the dogs at least know me and probably just look to see if all's well and move on.

Molly got her mid cycle dewormer on Thursday for that raccoon disease. She had diarrhea for two days, two mixed with blood, but all was well today. She's been her usual self but I think the dewormer just did a number on her gastro tract.

Charlie and our cat, Tony, were tested for raccoon disease and they were clean. So, it isn't likely Molly picked it up in our yard. She must have picked it up on a walk when it was just the two of us.

Also showed the vet pictures of Charlie's feet. His back feet are still red so she renewed his antibiotic. This is the third round. Hope it does the trick this time. I like that the vet is willing to find another way to check Charlie since he gets so stressed at the vet. It is also increasingly more difficult for him to get in and out of the SUV. I'm thinking next time we should try the little car instead.

Anyone have big plans for the weekend? My sister is still with Dad so I'm spending the time cleaning inside and working on plants outside.

Molly has "raccoon disease." This was a new one to me. It was identified in her stool sample and picked up because she somehow ingested raccoon poop. Maybe she stepped in it and licked her paws or ate grass that raccoons pooped on. However she got it, her heartworm med also treats intestinal worms. Even so, the vet wants to stop the worms in mid cycle so I give her heartworm med on the 1st of the month and two weeks later give her a wormer. I also need to have Charlie and the cat checked. It truly is always something.

Wouldn't it be nice if dogs came with a "slow" switch. They could just implant it after a surgery and it could dissolve in a certain number of days. That and a forehead thermometer for dogs would make two fine inventions.

I hope the surgery helps Java. It sounds like squirrels can't rest easy during her recovery. They should continue to be afraid...very afraid.

Charlie's feet are looking better all the time. He must have nearly a week of antibiotics left so he has even more time to get them in tip top shape.

Molly has her yearly exam tomorrow. When Charlie has an appointment, we take Molly with because we are afraid she would destroy the house if we took Charlie and not her too. When Molly has an appointment, she gets to go alone. I would never subject Charlie to any unnecessary time at his least favorite place. He'll get to stay home and enjoy a peaceful nap.

Hi all. How is Charlie doing? So frustrating dealing with red irritated feet. Not like you can tell him don't walk around. I hope he is better. Finding a vet that is licensed for house calls is not easy. Hope fully you won't need that service for a long time. Good to be prepared though. I am just glad that Spring is finely here. Java, my 11 years old had surgery to remove the shoulder assembly of the leg that was amputated 3 1/2 years ago. He runs at top speed and occasionally crashes into the grass in his quest for total squirrel eradication. This resulted in a "rug burn" irritation at the bone end that wouldn't clear up. I will be removing the 38 staples in a few days. Right now he looks a lot like Frankenstein! And he STILL wants to run! The excitement never ends! Wishing everyone a peaceful Sunday.

You know, I noticed Henley slipping more then usual on our tile floors. Sarge had spinal problems towards the end. I hope Henley doesn't have the same thing. Hugs for Charlie.

Happy Mother's Day!!

Charlie walked with us this morning but fell twice. I am not really sure what happened either time. The first time it was around a stick and the second time it was around one of those flags companies put up to mark an underground cable. I'm not sure if they caused his fall though. My big concern is that he had so much trouble getting up. I had to go over to help him lift his back end BUT I barely assisted. So I don't know what to think.

Charlie had his feet recheck yesterday at the vet. Still some redness and a bit of swelling by the toes so he's back on antibiotics for another 2 weeks. Charlie has needed a month of antibiotics to clear his feet in the past so I wasn't really surprised.

We got some welcome news at the vet too. This practice has now started to do home euthanizing. I had asked about this awhile back because I just hate the thought that Charlie will have to go some place that clearly stresses him out when it is his time. That is not how I want him to spend his final moments. We were told the vet would be willing to come out to the car which made it a little better. We transport our animals to a place where they cremate so that would work for us. BUT having it happen at home is so much better. I've never felt so adamant about that for our other animals but Charlie gets so anxious. Hope not to have that decision come for a long time yet but it's nice to have a plan.

Thanks for asking Jeanne. I seem to be hurting a lot since PT yesterday. The pain isn't always in the same spot. After PT it was my calves, especially left. Later in the day it was my lower back. Today it is more my thighs though my back is very stiff. The PT has given me no activity restrictions so I continue as usual. She and I will have to talk about all the pain when I see her tomorrow morning.

How are you doing?

Charlie walked again today!! He's getting to be a regular. Tomorrow he goes for the recheck on his feet. The antibiotics were done yesterday but his feet still look a little red and some toes look swollen. I predict more antibiotics but at least he is lots and lots better.

No, it isn't a pulled muscle. This has been going on since I had influenza at the beginning of March. My legs feel like the muscles have clenched and won't let go. The doctor had me checked for Lyme's and did a total tick panel but that was all normal. The x-ray showed severe arthritis in my lower back. I'm not sure that's what is doing this but I have four weeks in PT to see if I can get better. So far I've been there once and do see a small, small improvement but it's a start!!

Charlie walked again this morning. He is getting to be a regular but I suppose it's partly due to the weather. Sunny and cool. His favorite.

I have a lot of trouble walking and limp along most of the time. I have discovered over the last two days that I can walk longer and not feel any worse. Molly is so good about going my pace. Charlie only goes one pace and it is just a little too fast for me right now. At least he stops frequently. He is a boy after all.

I tried booties on him but that was a big no go. Apparently he doesn't think he needs them. I can just hear him. "I've spent 10 years, 70 to you missie, without those things on my feet and I am not going to start now." LOL I try to get his feet cleaned after every outside excursion. I'm not perfect but I do what I can.

Walked both dogs this morning. It's harder for me now to walk them at the same time and I was limping by the time I got home. At least it's a nice day if maybe a bit on the cool side. Having the sun always makes things seem better.

Charlie's paws are looking pretty good now but not healed. I suspect he'll need another round of antibiotics.

That was an interesting article!! The vet we saw this last week suggested we start bathing Charlie as often as possible. We use a special shampoo for him but she said even if we didn't want to give a complete bath, just rinsing or wiping him down with a wash cloth would be helpful. Pollen settles on them and then they lick so they are absorbing it, inhaling it and ingesting it. No wonder it's such a problem.

I was thinking the vinegar/water combo might be nice to use when doing the washcloth thing.

We also doubled Charlie's fish oil pills. We had been giving two a day so now it's four. For a short time we are also doubling his dose of Apoquel.

He's on a special diet but I think that's as much for his sensitive stomach as anything else.

I've never heard of calendula. I'll have to check into that.

As you can see, we do a lot to help Charlie's allergies and I often feel I'm winning the battle but, then, once in awhile I lose. I'm going to keep fighting with all I can!!

I am a morning person. I am usually up at 5:00 give or take an hour. I don't walk in the dark anymore though so the dog(s) and I have to wait till daybreak to get out.

Charlie went to the vet on Tuesday. I came home from the Clinic and discovered his back feet were huge -- so swollen. They must have really been hurting. He's on antibiotics for two weeks and I am very impressed with his progress. His left foot looks back to normal but I think he still has some swelling I his right foot. It is smaller though. He's even back to wanting to walk. Good sign.

That trip to the vet is the first time in a long time since Charlie has been in the car. DH wanted to go so that meant taking the SUV. Charlie puts his front feet up and someone hefts him up the rest of the way. He has been able to jump out okay but this time he fell both at the vet and at home. I got on line and ordered a foldable ramp. We used steps with the last dogs and they did great with them but can't seem to teach these two to use them. So, the ramp it is. Hope it works well.

Cool and windy here today. There's snow in Minnesota but I think it will track more north than east so we are unlikely to get it. No complaints from me!!

I'm not a morning person either. Tomorrow I have to get up at 6am so I can let Huck out and walk him. Only other time I get up that early, is when I want pictures of the sunrise. I go up there tonight, and I am going to spend a few hours with Huck. I have missed him! He doesn't jump on me for the most part. When he does, he is very gentle. Not much going on here either. I did get a plant transplanted. 2 more to go!

Well then tomorrow Huck will be so glad to see you! Hope he doesn't jump up on you!!!!

Not much going on this weekend, planning to work in the yard and get my walk in as well as Zoey. It is so hot already that it has to be early morning or later evening! I'm not a morning person! emoticon

Enjoy your time pet sitting!!

We had another beautiful day yesterday and looks like another great one today. Then it will rain most of the week. Hopefully they won't be all day rains!!

I hope it works but I also hope you don't have to try it real soon. Gentle rains are okay but not those storms.

We all enjoyed time outside today. It is a beautiful day!!

Thanks, I have just ordered a Thundershirt and one of their raincoats. Lucy hates having to go out in the rain. She will hold it as long as she can. I just don't understand why she is bothered sometimes and not others. Must be bariatric pressure or something.

Henley is the only dog we have had that fears loud noises. Not only thunder, but loud trucks and buses (they have air brakes). Some people say the Thundershirt works. I haven't bought one because it is pretty pricey for a large dog. Henley is 99 pds., and if the shirt didn't work, then we would be out money. He prefers going to his crate when we have bad thunder.

Hoping all the pups are feeling better.

Are your hounds bothered by storms? I have had Lucy (Redbone) for about nine months and she had only shown fear of storms in the last couple of months. She is usually fine but twice, she has gone to a dark corner hallway and has been visibly upset. She makes no sound, but obviously is afraid. Granted, both times have been real thunder boomers with lots of lightening.

Safe travels Sandi.

Jeanne, Good luck keeping ahead of ear troubles for Henley.

Now, I have to go clean Charlie's paws. It'll be a vet visit soon I think.

Henley isn't shaking his head, but I noticed they are dirty. Have to stay on top of that, or they will get bad. Boxer puppies are so cute. I'm glad for your Niece.

Hope you have a safe trip Sandi, and Zoey does well. She will be hungry when you get home!

I hope Henley's ears are okay, Jeanne.

I bet that boxer pup is adorable.

Glad everyone had a nice Easter.
We will be traveling back to Tally from the mountains, hope to get back up here soon. I won't be online much tomorrow.

I hope so too Jeanne. How are Henley's ears looking now?

We had a good Easter. One of my nieces got a Boxer puppy and brought it over to show him off. What a cutie!! And such a mellow pup.
