I found this on someone's blog and I hope it will help to deter the sugar cravings:

Here are the pros' tips for cracking down on the most seductive tabletop substance known to man:

Eat breakfast "Ninety percent of sugar addicts skip breakfast," says Kathleen DesMaisons, Ph.D., author of Potatoes Not Prozac. "They wait and get a big hit of sugar at 10 a.m." When you eat breakfast, you prevent the drop in blood sugar that makes you crave sugar later.

Pick fruit Satisfy your sweet tooth with apples, bananas, and berries, which temper natural sugar with fiber and loads of antioxidants, says Elisa Zied, M.S., R.D., a spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association and the author of Feed Your Family Right! Dried fruit and 100 percent fruit juices will also do in a pinch, but they don't have nearly as much fiber and are more concentrated sources of calories, Zied says, so limit yourself to a quarter cup or less of dried fruit or one cup of 100 percent juice a day.

Think 100 When you simply must have a cupcake or a candy bar, stick to 100- to 150-calorie portions and 16 grams of sugar or less. Check out the Best Supermarket Foods for Women, to keep your fitness goals.

Indulge right after dinner Late-night ice cream fixes give you a pure, unadulterated sugar rush. Have a small scoop soon after dinner instead and you'll reduce (though not counter) the insulin-spiking effect, DesMaisons says.

Cut out "overt" sugars Tackle the worst offenders first: sucrose-laden treats like candy, frappuccinos, ice cream, and soft drinks. If you drink a soda every day, try having one every other day, then once a week, then not at all.

Enter sugar rehab Like any addict, you need to detox before you can fully recover. According to DesMaisons, it takes five days to fully overcome your cravings for sugar, and you'll feel awful for three of them. Prepare to be edgy and irritable starting on day two; by day five, you'll feel like a whole new person. After you've recovered, you'll find that a little sugar goes a much longer way.

Dr OZ is so smart, how does he know all this stuff. I'm so grateful he has his books and CD's out. Do you all see his shows on Discovery Health called
"the truth about food" It may have been a limited series, but it sure was good.
His work certainly motivates me.
I really like the Marsten quote, too, thank you, Nana.

Dr. Oz's 5 Tips for a Happy, Heart-Healthy Life
The way you live does make a difference! Here's a pain-free prescription for bypassing heart disease.
By Mehmet Oz, MD

Mehmet Oz, director of the Cardiovascular Institute at Columbia University-New York Presbyterian Hospital in New York City, may be a renowned heart surgeon, but he'd rather help prevent heart disease than do another bypass operation. Despite risk factors you can't change, such as family history, the way you live does make a difference, he says. Here, his pain-free prescription:
1. Go out and play. You are better off being in good shape and fat than thin and in bad shape. There's no pill or diet that can substitute for the health benefits of exercise. Don't starve yourself, but eat well and get moving, doing whatever kind of exercise is fun for you. Go for a bike ride with your spouse, or play basketball with your kids. You'll look and feel better, and your heart will thank you.

2. Watch your waistline. Despite the advice above, where your fat lands is key. Abdominal fat is a risk factor for metabolic syndrome, which dramatically increases the risk of heart disease. So do sit-ups and keep your waist measurement less than 40 inches for men and 35 inches for women.

3. Have sex. Sexual activity can provide exercise and emotional bonding, perhaps explaining why one study shows that having orgasms at least 100 times a year (that's twice a week) is associated with longevity. On the other hand, sexual dysfunction can be a signal of heart disease. Like a dipstick, erections of the penis reflect the vascular health of a man's heart, so trouble in that department may mean it's time to see your doctor.

4. Go nuts. Rich in healthy fats, nuts are great to snack on and very filling, so you don't feel compelled to eat as much junk.

5. Relieve the pressure. Emotional stress causes physical stress. Avoid traffic jams, for example, which studies show are associated with heart attacks. Relaxation techniques keep the heart healthy. Yoga and meditation are great, but even simple stress-reduction techniques can work. Try counting to 10 and taking yourself outside the situation, as if just observing it.

Stress can also raise your blood pressure, and studies show that people with the lowest blood pressure have the fewest heart attacks. What we once thought was normal may be way too high for heart health. While we don't know yet how low is low enough, if you have heart-disease risk factors and your blood pressure is 130/80 or higher, see your doctor.

Profound success

"Real success is not merely a matter of getting what you want. After all, a newborn infant with a loud cry can accomplish that.
Real success comes from fully being who you are. Real success comes from giving your own unique value to life.

The less you need, the more fulfilled and powerful and effective you are. As your peacefulness increases, so does your energy level.

Choose not to let the small things anger you, or annoy you, or distract you. And keep in mind that most things are small things.

Stop fretting so much about whether or not you're getting your way. Seek instead to relax your judgment, and to find the unique value that is in each moment.

You cannot ever fully control everything that happens, and in fact you would not want to do so. Enjoy true success by learning how to take whatever happens, and to make it work for the good of all concerned."

Positive path

"If you wish to get rid of something, do not seek to fight against it. For by doing so, you only end up making it stronger.
Instead, choose to create a more valuable and compelling alternative. Find a way to channel your desire for change in a positive direction.

Let go of your need to assign blame and to seek retribution for destructive behavior. For that usually results in an escalating cycle of more destruction.

Instead, move completely beyond what has happened and give your energy to the best of what can be for all involved. Fill the situation with so much positive value that there's no space remaining for the negative influences.

For every negative influence, no matter how powerful, there is something positive and beneficial that can render it irrelevant. Challenge yourself to find and to travel that positive path.

Don't make the problems worse by giving them the energy of your resistance. Make the world better by giving the power of your love."

The beauty of now

"Are you aware of what's happening right now? Or do your recollections of the past and speculations about the future create a barrier between you and the present moment?
Are you fully living and experiencing this life that you have? Or do you put so much energy into analyzing every detail and worrying about every move that there's no time left to simply and gloriously be?

Are you striving so earnestly to get ahead that all the effort is putting you more and more behind? Is your life so totally defined by what you need to do that you've lost sight of who you are?

There is so much you can let go of, without really losing a thing. It is when you stop merely trying that you can truly be.

The life for which you have always longed is as close as your very next choice. You are completely equipped and prepared to make that choice.

This moment is filled with magnificent possibilities, and this moment is when you can bring the best of them to life. Let go of those burdens you really don't need, and open yourself to the beauty of now."

Consider it a privilege

"Consider it a privilege to be living this day. And you'll connect yourself to this day's most valuable and positive possibilities.
When there is something that must be done, consider yourself privileged to be in a position to do it. Then step forward and make it happen with a thankful heart.

If a difficult obstacle blocks your efforts, consider yourself privileged to be able to work through it. It is an opportunity for you to grow stronger and more experienced.

Whatever life may send your way, consider yourself privileged to be living it. For that is an attitude that will surely enable you to get the most out of every moment.

Consider it a privilege, and your eyes will be opened to the best opportunities. Your thoughts and actions will be focused on creating real, meaningful value.

Consider it a privilege to be right where you are, doing precisely what you're doing. And you'll find opportunities for true fulfillment in every direction."

Isn't that the truth! We worship our possessions but not the most important possession - ourselves.
We keep our cars clean and waxed with good fuel. We clean our homes and keep them running well. We shine our jewellery and have our dogs groomed, but we put ourselves last. We don't think about how we are fueling ourselves or keeping ourselves in "good working order".

Thank you for the daily "Food for thought".

Just because you can

"This day is not happening to you. It is happening through you.
The way you see the world does not merely affect what you think and feel about all that is going on. The way you see the world determines how the world will be.

Your thoughts are not just momentary flashes that disappear once you are finished with them. They are powerful forces that give energy and direction to life.

The events and situations that come your way are not just random occurrences. There is a reason why you have put yourself in a position to experience them.

The things that are possible are the things that you imagine and expect to be possible. Raise your imagination and your expectations to new levels, and the world follows right along.

This day is happening because you are here to live it. Make it truly grand and exquisitely beautiful, just because you can."

Path to victory

"From this moment, there is a path that leads toward victory and another path that leads toward defeat. Which path is your awareness focused upon?
Each pathway is equally valid, equally realistic, and equally accessible. Which path have you chosen to follow?

The particular circumstances of this moment don't really matter that much. What matters is what you decide to do with what you have right now.

Know, without a doubt, that there is a very real path that goes from where you are now to where you would most like to be. Know it and you will surely see it.

Always, there is hope, for always you can take a step forward. Step by step, you can work your way to any place you choose.

Get yourself on the path that leads to victory, to accomplishment and fulfillment of your most deeply held purposes. That path is surely here right now, ready for you to take the next step."

Dare to dream
"The main thing that keeps an objective out of reach is your assumption that you cannot reach it. You're able to do precisely what you expect to be able to do.
Are there dreams that you dare not to dream because you've decided that you cannot attain them? If so, then your negative expectation has become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Before you abandon or downgrade your most treasured dreams, consider this. When your goal is personally meaningful and compelling, you can achieve it, whatever it may be.

You are never too old or too young, too rich or too poor, to direct the energy of your life toward a compelling objective. Life is about making a difference, and that's something you can do no matter what your circumstances may be.

There is somewhere you truly wish to go, something you sincerely desire to achieve, right this very moment. Take the time to find it, commit yourself to it, and make the effort to make it happen.

Your dreams represent some of the most valuable gifts you have to give to life. Dare to dream, and allow the best of who you are to be fully expressed."

True Success

"Success is not in your environment. It is not controlled by luck, chance, or the influence of others. Success is not in the greener pastures on the other side of the fence. Success lies right where you are - here and now!

You don't need greater abilities, or greater opportunities. You already possess what you need for success to develop deep within you. So, don't look elsewhere. Instead, expect the seeds of success to grow from your heart.

Starting today, vow to focus, explore and take action on what you have and what you can do. When you do, success will surely follow."

The Right Attitude
Jillian Michaels

"Do you have what it takes to reach your weight-loss goals? If you think it's all about diet and exercise, you're wrong. It sounds crazy, I know. Exercise and a proper diet is crucial to any weight-loss and fitness program. But, to reach any long term goal — especially one that requires major lifestyle change — you'll need to improve your attitude, too. You can have all the external support in the world, but if your self esteem is in the toilet, you'll never have long-term success.
Having the right attitude is so important because thought is behavior. The power of the mind is total — the way you think about yourself manifests as your reality. We all know how easily negative thoughts can lead to lack of confidence, hopelessness, and depression. You've heard about self-fulfilling prophecy, right? Well, if you tell yourself that you'll always be fat or never find happiness, chances are you'll end up fat and unhappy. Hey, it makes sense.

Okay, let's turn that scenario around. Tell yourself that you can get fit and you will be happy. It's that simple. You can master your own fate with positive thinking!"

Strengthen your thoughts

"Your thoughts can work for you or they can work against you. Choose right now to hold those thoughts that work in your favor.
Choose the thoughts that give energy to your most cherished values and most treasured dreams. Choose thoughts that resonate with hope and love.

To hold a certain specific thought requires no physical effort, no special training and no permission from anyone else. Your thoughts are precisely what you allow them to be, as soon as you allow them to be.

And those thoughts set the stage for the way you experience life. They serve as a lens through which you see the world, and they control the way you respond to every situation.

When you develop a strong habit of filling your mind with positive, uplifting thoughts, you are well positioned to successfully meet the challenges that come your way. Empowering thoughts equip you to take effective and appropriate action.

Thoughts can come and go in an instant and have no physical dimensions, yet they exert enormous influence. Strengthen your thoughts and you strengthen your life."

Slow and Steady
Jillian Michaels

"Remember the fable about the tortoise and the hare? The hare got off to a zippy pace and seemed sure to win. But he didn't, did he? The tortoise, while naturally much slower than the hare, kept moving steadily towards the finish line and was able to cross first.
What's the take-home message of this fable? Slow and steady wins the race. To reach your weight-loss goals, you need to switch from the hare's to the tortoise's mindset. In other words, you must break the "all or nothing" mentality.

Do you start diets with super superhuman resolve — determined to eschew temptation and work out seven days a week — only to fall off the wagon and give up hope?

This kind of approach to anything — especially to your health — can be very appealing, even motivational. Hey, I'm telling you right now it's the most dangerous way to set out. Human beings are imperfect. When you do skip a workout or give in to temptation (something we all do), you're more likely to throw in the towel.

So, start thinking like a tortoise. Pace yourself. Have a slice of pizza and take a day off now and then, but don't stray too far from the path that will you to your goals."

The joy of accomplishment

"As you choose the way you will live this day, remember this. Accomplishment is truly a joy that's worth experiencing over and over again.
The joy of accomplishment is in the doing. There is nothing that can match the feeling of knowing that you are making a difference.

Working to get something done enables you to discover and develop your own unique strengths. It is a highly fulfilling way to spend your time.

Accomplishment never gets old or tiresome. For each accomplishment opens the door to a whole new level of exciting possibilities.

Right now, there are all kinds of things that can be done to add value to your world. Decide to be the person who will step forward to do them.

Though the outer rewards of accomplishment are many, accomplishment is also its own reward. Choose today to make the effort, to persist with purpose and commitment, and know the special joy that accomplishment brings."

Someday has arrived

"Life is now. Stop waiting for your opportunity to fully live and realize that it is already here.
Perhaps you have always thought that someday you will follow your dreams. The fact is, someday has now arrived.

Your authentic purpose is calling out to you. Now is the time to be fulfilling that purpose.

Go now in the direction you've always known you must go. Allow the unique and beautiful person you are to come fully to life.

Let go of the excuses and rationalizations that keep you mired in disappointment and frustration. Move quickly forward by continually reminding yourself of why you are doing so.

This is the moment for bold, yet sincere action. Someday is here, and the richness of life is now yours to experience."

You can

"You could come up with all sorts of very reasonable excuses for not taking action. Or you can simply do what is to be done.
You could worry about what might or might not happen. Or you can get busy and make sure you achieve the result you desire.

You could take one look at the immensity of the challenge and decide that there's no way around it. Or you can begin to work your way, step by step, through that challenge.

You could delay and procrastinate and find plenty of ways to distract yourself from the task at hand. Or you can choose to enjoy the real fulfillment of making a positive, substantial contribution to life.

You could listen to all those people who tell you with certainty that it can't be done and that you're not qualified to do it. Or you can decide that you'll find a way to make it happen.

In the end, whatever the excuses or distractions or challenges may be, the decision is always yours. For when you choose to, you can do it."

Embrace the responsibility

"It is not anyone else's job to make you happy or fulfilled. What you choose to be is what matters.
When life is not going your way, there is nothing of value to be gained by looking for someone to blame. Instead, move beyond what has already happened and get busy exploring the positive possibilities available to you.

If you experience a disappointment or even a serious setback, that is no reason to give up hope. Though life is certainly not perfect, you are completely capable of moving forward no matter what may have happened before.

Happiness will come to you when it comes from you. Success will be yours when you choose to take responsibility for making it so.

Instead of obsessing over who might have hurt you or why or how, decide to get on with life. Instead of putting your energy into resentment, put that energy into creating meaningful greatness.

Your life is yours to live. Embrace the responsibility and all that goes with it, and your days will be filled with true richness."

Inner achievement

"Everything you achieve on the outside has first been created on the inside. The victories that the world is able to see are direct reflections of the victories that you've already won within yourself.
Your biggest obstacle to success can be your own inability to see yourself reaching it. Once you know without a doubt that you can do it, you will indeed make it happen.

The most important person to convince is you. Once you are truly convinced that you can do it, others will quickly be convinced as well.

Whatever you seek to achieve, achieve it first on the inside. Then, even the most formidable outer challenges will not have the power to stop you.

Inner achievement will build your confidence and fuel your persistence. Inner achievement will put the power of purpose behind every action.

Work to convince yourself of the worthiness and value of the goal you seek. And from that inner achievement, the outer achievement will surely flow."

Who you think you are

"What is the image you have of yourself? Who and what do you think you are?
If your self-image is in conflict with your goals, the self-image will win out and the goals will fall by the wayside. Yet when your image of yourself is in agreement with your goals, those goals will be achieved in ways that seem almost effortless.

Who you think you are has a tremendous impact on the person you actually become. And fortunately, you can choose precisely who you think you are.

Others will often try to tell you who you are, but you don't need to pay any attention to them. Instead, decide to see yourself as the person you would most truly like to be.

The way you choose to see yourself exerts a steady and substantial influence on all the other choices you make. And those choices add together to build the reality of your life.

Truly see yourself as the person who can live the life you most sincerely desire to live. Who you think you are is precisely who you will come to be."

This is your moment

"Let go of your criticisms about how things should have been, and you'll see the magnificent possibilities of now. Let go of your worries about what might be, and you'll be able to focus on all you can do right now.
Stop putting your energy into making excuses and use that energy to take action. Quit fretting over getting it perfect and put your focus on being effective.

You have now arrived at a unique moment that is filled with countless possibilities. You can make something truly valuable out of it.

You have the real and powerful ability to imagine, and then to put that imagination into action. You can call together all you've experienced, and everything that is most meaningful to you, and to create from it all your very own gifts to life.

There is abundance all around you, and with a little focused, determined effort that abundance is yours to enjoy. Choose to connect with the best within you, to make that effort, and to live with true richness.

Get up, get inspired, get moving and get involved in making a positive difference. This is your moment to come fully to life."

Slow and Steady
Jillian Michaels

Remember the fable about the tortoise and the hare? The hare got off to a zippy start and seemed sure to win the race.

Do you start diets with superhuman resolve — determined to eat right and work out seven days a week without fail — only to fall off the wagon and give up hope?

This kind of approach to anything — especially to your health — can be very tempting, and may even feel motivational. But I'm telling you right now that it's a dangerous approach that will only set you up for failure. Human beings are imperfect. It's inevitable that you will eventually skip a workout or give in to temptation, and you'll feel like a failure and want to give up entirely — i.e., trade the all for the nothing.

So, start thinking like a tortoise. Pace yourself. Allow yourself to have a slice of pizza or take a day off now and then; just don't stray too far from the path that will lead you to your goals.

Thankful for it all

"Gratitude is like putting money in the bank. Practice it every chance you get.
Every day is filled with opportunities to be thankful. You can be thankful for your blessings, for your problems, for the things you know, for the things you've yet to learn, and for everything in between.

When you sincerely enjoy and appreciate life's small, simple treasures, the big, impressive achievements will soon be headed your way. Demonstrate, with joy and enthusiasm, your appreciation for something, and you're likely to get much more of it.

Choose to be gloriously thankful simply for the fact that you're alive and aware. You will notice an immediate and profound improvement in your day.

Every thankful thought you think connects you more solidly to life's magnificent abundance. The more you appreciate something, the more real value it takes on.

So challenge yourself to be truly thankful for all that is around you, for all that is in you, and for all that happens to you and through you. By so doing, you give richness and value to everything you touch."

You're as great as your thoughts.

"Imagine your ideal self - a person filled with health, happiness and prosperity. Imagine living the life of your dreams.

This life is not as distant or unreachable as it may seem. You are a reflection of your thoughts. If you think you can do great things, you will. If you think you can't, you won't.

For change to happen you need to enlarge your thoughts. You need to hold a vision of yourself that will carry you through adversity and give you the strength to climb mountains.

So, hold your ideal self in your thoughts. Stay true to it. You will become as great as what you hold in your mind."

Habit of success

"What you do consistently and repeatedly grows stronger. And that provides you with nearly unlimited opportunity.
Success is not a secret that is hidden from you. Success is a habit that is readily available to you.

Life is made up of moment after moment. Point all those moments in the same direction, and truly magnificent achievements will come about.

There are very few things of value that you can create instantly. Yet when you expand your horizon to a few weeks or months, the possibilities for achievement increase dramatically.

The hours and the days will pass whether you make use of them or not. Choose to focus your energy in a specific direction, again and again, and put the power of time to work for you.

Keep your thoughts, your words and your actions pointed in the direction you would most like to go. Develop the habit of success, and with it you can create whatever you choose."

This is a great day

"If it seems you're having a difficult day, that's not really the case. Though today you may have experienced certain difficulties up to this point, those difficulties do not have to define the day.
The rest of this day will be what you make it. You can choose right now to make it positive and productive.

Those difficulties and frustrations that had you thinking this was a difficult day can quickly be left behind. You can in fact make this a truly great day.

Take a deep breath, and be sincerely thankful for the experience and the wisdom you've already gained today. Then point your energy in a positive direction.

Choose to make this moment a turning point. Instead of allowing random events to control your attitude, select an attitude that will move you forward.

This is a great day. Beginning right now, you have what it takes to live that reality."

Do it now

"Things you're always going to do later never do get done. What you put off until someday will always be out of your reach.
If anything is important enough to do someday, then it is worth starting on right now. If you're going to actually do it, then you must do it in the moment you're in.

Procrastination may seem like an easy way to avoid taking action. What it really is, though, is an ever-increasing burden of guilt and regret that you place on yourself.

Think of how awful it feels to know that you could have done, or could be doing, but instead you waited until too late. Fortunately, there is a simple and highly effective way to ease that burden.

Take action now. Choose something that you have continued putting off, and go ahead and get it done.

You've made many great plans and promises. Go ahead, act on them, and see how great it is to make them real."

As I was reading the post about negative self talk it brought to mind the quote "No one can make you inferior without your consent". I believe that was Eleanor Roosevelt who said that. The media and others around us may try to make us feel bad because we struggle with weight. Sometimes these messages make me feel as though any of us who are morbidly obese (I hate this statement) are lepers. I am relieved that I am changing that but I wish it wasn't so important to me to not be called obese anymore. Are others better than me because they are a healthy weight? NO! Does God love them more because they are a healthy weight? Absolutely not!!! We are dear to our creator and no one is dearer than another he loves each of us with such an incredible love that he sacrificed his beloved son for every single one of us.

I wish I could just ignore the media's message. Smokers can certainly relate as they are under attack as much as those of us who are overweight if not more so. I know smoking is bad for our health but my heart goes out to the people who are addicted just as I have been to food.

In an effort to permanently change I am trying out new forms of exercise with the hope that making exercise fun will make me stick with it. I do feel good when I exercise and eat right. It is easier to move and empowering to know I am doing good things for my body.

What I have come to believe is that this whole process is really a matter of the heart not the head. We know being overweight and sedentary is bad for us but it has it's benefits for us in some respects so we stay there. A change of the heart which embraces the need to change our bodies for the better is more likely to last. Knowing that my lifestyle changes are encouraging others, especially my children, to change and probably extending my life so I can enjoy my family and friends has made this journey so important. When getting healthy was no longer about a clothing size but about a life worth living I was able to change as I never had been able to in the past. I know a return to the old ways would mean existing rather than living and I don't want to go there ever again. I asked God for the grace to make these changes and in his goodness he gave me the ability to do it.

I hope these ideas inspire you. I am so happy to have so many virtual friends who are not against me but for me. I am for all of you too. Remember each day is a new day and a new opportunity to do good things for your body and your soul too.

The Fly Lady (reformed disorganized person and author of "Shine Your Sink")says you're not behind start right where you are. That is great advice. Embrace it, live it.

God Bless.

"Train yourself to be godly. Physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come."
I Timothy 4:7-8

The Right Stuff by Jillian Michaels

"You're fat."
"Don't bother exercising today — it won't make a bit of difference."
"No wonder you're fat — you have no self-control."

"Would you ever say any of these things to your best friend, your spouse, child, or even a co-worker? No! So why is it okay to say such hurtful things to yourself?

It's not okay! Remember, EVERYTHING goes back to self. A vital part of changing your attitude is changing your self-talk — your internal monologue, the chattering conversation you have with yourself all day long, whether you are aware of it or not. It's this kind of useless negativity that can hold you back, keeping you from being the best that you can be. And now is the time to turn it around once and for all.

Your self-talk can make the difference between self-assurance and self-doubt, happiness and despair, success and failure. I can promise you that if you start making your self-talk more positive and affirming, and less defeatist and self-deprecating, your whole life will change for the better."

Witness your choices

"As you go through this day, make whatever choices you wish. And remind yourself with each one that it is indeed your own choice.
Be an aware and observant witness of all the choices you make. You'll find that it adds power and perspective to everything you do.

Many times when you have the opportunity to make a choice, you essentially give that choice away. This happens when you allow yourself to react in a conditioned and predictable manner out of sheer habit.

But you never have to do that. Each choice can indeed be your very own.

You don't have to be offended when someone seeks to offend you. You don't have to become angry when others seek to incite your anger for their own purposes.

You can make any choice you wish. Pay close attention to those choices, and you'll quickly learn to harness their awesome power."
