Well, we got passed another of our neighbors Fourth of July Fireworks Bash! Luckily, last year the county put a bane of fireworks due to the drought. We knew it was on again this year as the neighbor was mowing behind our yard. But they stopped the show before midnight. The dog keep jumping up out of bed so I finally took her outside to watch the show for a few minutes. She then settled back in for the night.

The dr. does not think I need meds at all. I saw him today and mentioned about anxiety and depression. I am continuing with the counclor on campus, but he is willing to write a referral for a counclor, so that I can get some more free help. My school conclor will be helping me fin someone who takes my insurance and is where I can get to safely on my own. I need to watch the tiredness and make sure that it is improving or gone within a month and I need to let him know if the depression gets worse.

I have gone for soda and binge on candies. I have been sick and feel like sleeping from now until 6 which is when I leave campus. My counclor on campus has just started working with me on mindful eating which is extra hard with this illness.

I know that I can easily go for the entire thing when it comes to nuts and maybe raisins. I have had control with cereals, but there are only a small number of them that I can eat.

Onicam, I can understand that being stress related but could it also be from boredom? Would it be possible to replace the candies with some thing like nuts, raisins, cheerios or another favorite cereal?

I need some help with being motivated with the eating. I am binging like crazy on candy and I know that at least part of it is an addiction. I am now to the point that I cannot walk by the store without getting candies and eating every piece in one sitting without stopping. Some of this could be stress related, but I am not sure how much is from what part.

Andrea, try to fit 10 minutes every now and then. Walk the stairs at your job (if there are any), walk around the block, etc. Then after a few days try to get in 15 minutes. Instead of sitting on the bleachers watching DS play ball, try walking up and down the bleachers or walk around the ball field. I hope this helps!

what I have found really helps with motivation is to find a picture of an outfit I would like to buy or a photo of someone who has a hairdo or figure I would like ... then put these somewhere that you will see them before reaching for the snacks!

A Guide to Walking Meditation - Zen and the Art of Multitasking
-- By Liza Barnes, Health Educator

The word "meditation" is likely to conjure up a mental image of a cross-legged person sitting still in a quiet, peaceful room. While this is the method of choice for many who meditate, others choose a more active route to mindfulness. It's called walking meditation, and by doing it, you get to enjoy the benefits of walking (health and endurance) and meditation (awareness and mindfulness) simultaneously. Think of it as Zen and the art of multitasking.

I am getting help with the anxiety and the sleeping by a hypnotherapist who lives in CA. I live in MD so we are communicating some by phone and going to be doing more by email. My negative thinking seems to have been getting worse the past three or four days now that I think back, so once it seems like I am definitely getting the sleeping and the anxiety under enough control and to just watch for them I am going to have her help me there.

The Road to Success

The road to success is not straight
There is a curve called failure
A loop called confusion
Speed bumps called friends
Red lights called enemies
Caution lights called family
you'll have flats called jobs
But if you have determination
An engine called perseverance
Insurance called faith
A driver called GOD
You'll make it to a place called SUCCESS!

People are often unreasonable and self-centered. Forgive them anyway.
If you are kind, people may accuse you of ulterior motives. Be kind anyway.
If you are honest, people may cheat you. Be honest anyway.
If you find happiness, people may be jealous. Be happy anyway.
The good you do today may be forgotten tomorrow. Do good anyway.
Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough. Give your best anyway.
For you see, in the end, it is between you and God.
IT WAS NEVER BETWEEN YOU AND THEM ANYWAY.

Lately I have not been wanting to get out of bed on school days and had to force myself. I think part of this is my foot since I have another sprain and I also think part of this is that I never get a fulls night of sleep. Until my foot injury it has improved and then I have been rolling around a little more trying to find what is the right position.

Tending two shops

People can be hard to deal with. Are your co-workers constantly annoying you? Does your neighbor rake his leaves into your yard every fall? Is your child high-maintenance and needy? Often we let our frustrations and anger towards people and situations prevent us from seeing the larger picture. Try looking at the circumstance from the other person's point of view. Your overbearing co-worker might just be trying to emulate you by asking a million questions. Perhaps your neighbor doesn't really know where his property line ends and where yours begins. Your child may need more individual time with you, instead of competing with siblings. No person's personality can be summed up entirely by one negative trait or action. So next time someone cuts you off in traffic or swipes the idyllic apple you were eyeing at the store, remember that everyone is less-than-perfect sometimes. Know your role in people's lives and continue to be positive and mature. After all, we all do things that are worthy of a good tongue lashing sometimes!

Does anyone have a tip to share or a request for specific info?

Quiet Me Time

There are times when all of the activity around me makes my mind swirl and I can't think. When this happens, I go off by myself in a quiet place for about 10 minutes. I practice deep breathing, relax and regroup. My thoughts settle down and I can make wiser choices and cope better.
MORE INFORMATION:
I try to do this at least once a day. I've found that it brings down my blood pressure and is also helpful in keeping headaches at bay. If you have trouble sleeping, try doing this before bed!

Meditate Daily to Reduce Blood Pressure
Health News Flash -- By Nicole Nichols, Fitness Instructor & Health Educator

After one year, the following results were established:

* People who practiced transcendental meditation each day saw the greatest results: a 6-point drop is diastolic blood pressure and a 3-point drop in systolic blood pressure. Study authors say that these results are similar to results that patients on medication exhibit. However, 23 percent of the meditators were able to reduce their use of blood pressure medication.
* Results were similar for the other two groups: a 3-point drop is diastolic blood pressure and no change in systolic blood pressure.

Discover a three-step plan to bring balance to your stressed-out life. Remember, you can't take care of the people you love unless you take care of yourself!

"Me time" is a Must

Finding "me time" requires setting aside time for ourselves to take a break and engage in an activity that gives us that needed lift. It can be time spent in meditation or prayer, working in the garden, soaking in the tub, getting a massage, being with a special person, exercising, or enjoying any creative pursuit that celebrates YOU. Most of us are not fully aware that we need "me time." And maybe we don't know what would give us that little boost. But that doesn't mean we can just give up on the idea. To get "me time" into your routine, you need to take three steps: develop a plan, manage your time, and take action.

Develop a Plan - Think of what brings you joy, peace, or refreshment. And be realistic. You may not be able to play a game of pick-up basketball with teenagers, finance a trip to Egypt, or hike to the top of El Capitan. So in this planning phase, it may be helpful to jot down a list of choices and then weigh the pros and cons.

Manage Your Time - Now that you have a plan, you need to do a little time management to work in your "me time." The first step is to determine how much time you are wasting each day. You can use this information to fit it into your schedule. This may simply mean cutting back on watching TV, going to bed earlier, or passing up lunch at Denny's for a nap or a walk in the park. Be strong. Making room for "me time" may mean you have to turn down some invitations.

Take Action - Once you have decided what to do during your "me time" and reorganized your schedule to accommodate it, you have to take action. Like the slogan from Nike says "Just Do It."

Learn What Helps You Relax

I have a high-stress life, as so many of us do these days, but I've learned that a hot bath/shower, talking with a friend, listening to soothing music, taking a walk or other exercise, engaging in my hobby, and reading a book are a few of the ways I can help to relieve some of it. We are all different, so some of these may, or may not, be helpful to you. The important thing is to relieve it in a healthy manner and not turn to food or other unhealthy outlets. All the best to you!!

Manage Yourself in No Time - Tips to Fit More Into Your Day
-- By Rebecca Pratt, Staff Writer

As the world of technology evolves, there are more and more devices to make life easier for us. Think of all the time we save with things like garage door openers, snow blowers, remote controls, dishwashers, elevators, high speed internet, digital everything, laundry and cleaning services, gas powered mowers, online shopping…

It seems like no matter how many time-saving tools we have, people just keep getting busier. We work, sometimes more than one job, go to night school, have families, pets, belong to book clubs, volunteer, and more. If saving stress and finding time for fitness sound like good ideas for you this year, here are some tips that time management experts offer for busy parents…but you don’t have to have children to benefit from this great advice.

Do a Realistic Time Audit
Time management experts stress that before you can make needed changes in the way you manage time, you need to look at how you spend your time now. What activities or tasks are taking up the biggest chunks of your life? What items do you hate or put off most? Are you allowing others to dictate uses for your time that aren’t productive or don't fit your agenda? By doing a brutally honest assessment, you can begin to change the way you manage yourself in relation to time.

There are others working on this project. The way they are they read what I send it is very seldom that they email me back. I would have talked to the one that is the next responsible in class since he I can't get a response from him by email, but he was absent. I did get 1 of the other 3 in class and usually those 2 as switched.

It has been a long time since I was in school or even taught, much less worked! Maybe it you try making a list of the things you need to do first. Maybe if we knew more about the assignment might help. Sounds like you are only part of the equation and are working with others? Maybe scheduling a meeting with the others to discuss strategy?

There is no single "correct" way to teach writing and sometimes we remain stuck in our fear that we won't do it right or we won't finish.

Xana

Online Guide to Writing and Research

One of the most important things writers can do is to plan their writing and develop schedules for completing it. After you have an outline, you are ready to schedule work on your writing project. To do this, you need to have a plan. Knowing what topics you need to cover and whether you need to perform research will help you plan your writing time. Devising a writing project schedule may be particularly worthwhile for your longer assignments, especially research projects; however, a variation of this planning can be useful even for shorter projects.

To devise a schedule, you need a clear plan for all the activities, start to finish, associated with your writing project. A writing plan helps you stay in control of your writing assignments and complete them on time. Consider the time you have to complete the project, and allocate time for each activity. Some activities might include writing drafts; reviewing your project and asking for teacher and peer review; editing your draft for organization, content, style, and mechanics; producing and proofreading your final draft; and submitting your final project to your teacher.

Professional writing has given us some handy tools for managing writing projects. Where you work, you may even use a planning tool similar to the one presented in this appendix. Tools for managing writing projects are necessary where writers are collaborating and where a group of people are responsible for various portions of the writing process, such as reviewing and editing. We offer such a tool here for you to consider. This planning tool can be used for any formal or informal longer writing assignment. In addition, this tool can be used to get feedback from your teacher on your assignment.

I need help with figuring out how to tell what part of the project to do in what order. Is there any way to tell? I have the entire writing part of the project due by next week. There are others doing some of it, but I still have more than one part to do.

Does anyone have any suggestion on an area of time management or finding me time that you would like to know more about?

Xana

" You probably know that effective time management will help you get more done each day. It has important health benefits, too. By managing your time more wisely, you can minimize stress and improve your quality of life.

But how do you get back on track when organizational skills don't come naturally? To get started, choose one of these strategies, try it for two to four weeks and see if it helps. If it does, consider adding another one. If not, try a different one."

Today I would like to share a blog by JustJo66

We are all so unique and you know BEAUTiFUL....... What marvelous creatures humans are...it just amazes me that a truly beautiful girl like my therapist could THINK she's not beautiful.

How about yourself................. how do you see yourself? Just know that you are one unique individual with so many terrific qualities. Dig a little deeper and discover those things that have been hidden from you. The devil is a LIar...... stop him in his tracks the next time he tells you that "you're ugly"; "you don't deserve to be healthy"; "you'll never conquer this"; "you're a loser"........ all that negative junk that only he can tell so well and YOU believe IT!!

God created you and me. God does not make junk. :o)

Put Yourself First
Make sure you always put your self first, without that you will have nothing! You must take care of yourself in order to take care of others. If you are a parent, you need to be healthy to take care of your child. Imagine where that child would be without you! So remember to take care of yourself now!

Let's make a treat jar! This sounds like a great incentive!

Treat Yourself - You Deserve It!
By Maria Osnowitz

I don't call my journey to wellness a "diet." A diet is something that you do until you reach a desired weight. While on a diet, you don't always make a lifestyle change, and most of the time you slowly return to your old eating habits and gain the weight back that you lost and more. To be successful, you must commit to changing your whole mindset regarding the foods that you are eating.

I say that what I am doing is creating a "more vivid and satisfying life." I enjoy eating whole grains and fresh veggies. I am being more creative in cooking my food, using spices I never used before and doing a lot of experimenting. I am not restricting my food so I don't feel stressed; ergo I am not inclined to binge. What I do is give myself an inexpensive treat that boosts my mood and encourages me to continue to make appropriate food choices.

So what are inexpensive treats? These treats are different for everyone. They are treats that make you feel like smiling. I made a list of 25 things that make me smile spontaneously. Some of these things include reading a romantic novel, watching a romantic movie, going to the mall and doing some window shopping, meeting a friend for coffee/tea, going to a new yarn store and buying some funky yarn.

I write all of them on a slip of paper, and place them in a special jar (it used to be my cookie jar). You can use a vase that is just lying around your house and decorate it and make it look very special.

What action deserves a treat? I meet a friend for lunch and instead of ordering the French fries that go with my entree, I ask them to replace it with lettuce and tomato. I go into a cafe and buy a cup of decaf coffee, I don't order a pastry (scones used to be my favorite). These 2 actions require a reward, so when I get home I pick a slip of paper from my special jar! This reinforces my new behavior with a small, inexpensive treat. Why not try making yourself a "special jar" and reward yourself because you are so very, very special.

Positive thinking is an empowerment tool that can enhance the quality of life. Everyone has the choice of thinking positively or negatively, but whichever is chosen, more of it will show up in life. Think positively and you will gain enjoyment from life, laugh more, be more productive and have fun.

Positive thinking involves any of the following emotions: joy, knowledge, passion, empowerment, freedom, love, appreciation, enthusiasm, eagerness, happiness, belief, optimism, hopefulness and contentment. Positive thinking incites feelings of happiness, inspiration and encouragement.

Stop Wasting Your Time!

By Michael Masterson, Editor of Early to Rise newsletter

To paraphrase the words of Ben Franklin, the one currency of our lives is our time. How we spend that time is the truest indicator of how we value our lives. To be successful, I believe you need to spend most of your time doing three things:

1. Generating new ideas
2. Solving problems
3. Pushing people to make things happen

The last, though the least creative, is probably the most important. It will (and probably should) take up the lion‘s share of your productive time.

That‘s why it is imperative for you to do this one today: Make a frank assessment of your productivity. Are you making the best and most efficient use of your time? If you‘re unsure about the answer, ask yourself these questions:

* Are you planning your days or do you let your days plan you?
* Do you put out fires, believing you have no other choice?
* Do you take care of the small things because they are there, and leave the big things for another day?
* Do you avoid the difficult conversations, hard phone calls and tough decisions?

Do you spend time defending yourself? Resenting criticism? Rationalizing mediocrity? Do you daydream? Do you piddle? Do you take and make personal phone calls during work hours? Do you play computer games or surf the Internet on company time?

Believe me, it is easy to rationalize wasted time. However, at the end of the day, at the end of the year, at the end of your life, those rationalizations won‘t do you any good. When it comes time to look back and reflect on your accomplishments, you will not be able to count all your dreams and desires. You‘ll have nothing to count but what you have actually done -- and recognizing all the things you didn‘t.

Stop right now and ask yourself this: If I died tomorrow, would I be satisfied with all I‘ve done so far?

If your answer is "yes," you are a rare bird indeed. If "no," it‘s time to get to work. The time left to you may be less than you imagine. Each year that passes will disappear more quickly than the last. The time to get going on your important goals -- especially the ones you haven‘t started on -- is now.

Now means today. Identify the goal you‘ve left behind. Do one single, positive thing to advance that goal.

Do it today. Not this evening. Before the sun goes down.

Dr. Mercola's Comments:
We all have a limited amount of time. From my perspective you can never get enough practical advice on how to improve your personal efficiency, be happier and increase your free time. I encourage you to print out these pearls of wisdom and put them somewhere where you can review them often.

Celebrate Every Minute Of Your Journey Towards Your Goal!

Now that I've made a commitment to losing weight, I've started to love my body more than I ever have. Even though I can't see any tangible changes yet, I know that every single minute I am moving closer to my goal, and I know that I look and feel ever-so-slightly better than I did yesterday. I'm also much less likely to stress and complain about the things I dislike about my body, because I know that I'm doing something about them! Remember: If you can change your mind, you can change anything.

My Busy Schedule Secret

I'm a full time college student with a full time job, it's easy to get too busy to fit in exercise. On days when I don't have much time I go to my school's track and walk during my break. It's not hardcore cardio, but every little bit counts (:
MORE INFORMATION: Doing this everyday helps me stay happy about my exercise routine and it loosens my muscles up. It makes me feel fresh (:

Stealing Time for Yourself: Six Ways to Find the Time You Need to Change Your Life
By Michael Masterson, Editor of Early to Rise newsletter

I suppose it shouldn‘t have surprised me that two-thirds of the groups were early risers. Studies show that successful people get up early. In fact, more than one study has shown a direct relationship between how early executives rise and how far they go up the corporate ladder.

Getting up early and using that extra, undisturbed time well is the single most important thing you can do to get a leg up on everyone else who‘s trying to climb the same ladder. An hour‘s worth of productivity in the early morning is usually worth two hours of afternoon or evening work. I‘ve often suggested that you give yourself a jumpstart on your day by setting your alarm clock an hour earlier.

But there is more that you can do. You can squeeze out at least 90 extra minutes each day by adopting the following six practices.

1. Take Control of Your E-Mail

Here‘s how I do it:

*

I read and answer e-mail only twice a day.
*

I never read e-mail until I‘ve accomplished at least one important thing on my task list.
*

I resist getting involved in e-mail conversations/arguments between subordinates and colleagues. In most cases, I find that issues are resolved without my input.
*

I do not write e-mails that convey criticisms, complaints, or condemnations. Instead, I handle all difficult discussions personally or, at worst, on the phone.
* I keep my e-mails as short as possible. (Never more than a single screen page.)

2. Take Control of Your Phone Conversations

Like e-mail, phone conversations can be wasteful and emotionally draining. Although it is a necessary part of doing business, phone work should be managed with the same care as e-mail. Here are some of the ways I keep my phone work down to less than 30 minutes a day:

Except for emergencies, I do all my phone work once a day. I manage that by informing callers (either through voice mail or my assistant) that I return phone calls at a certain (specified) hour and I stick with it. By bunching my calls together, I‘m much better at keeping each one short.

Whenever possible, I head off a lengthy phone conversation by sending out a preliminary e-mail that outlines what needs to be said. Sometimes, this eliminates the need to speak in person.

When I begin each conversation, I announce the subject. (Ex: "I was hoping to talk to you about three things, John. The January property tax bill, the new marketing assistant, and . . .") I also indicate the maximum length of time I want to spend on the phone. (Ex: "I have another call scheduled for 10:10, John, but I think we can say everything we need to say by then.")

3. Delegate Better (and More Often)

It doesn‘t take a productivity expert to know that a great way to add extra time to your day is to become a better delegator. Some people have problems letting other people do the work. This was never an issue with me. Still, I‘ve learned to become even better at delegating.

While planning each day‘s activities, I ask myself, "Who could do this as well as me?" By identifying beforehand who else might do a given task, I find it much easier to give the work away when the time comes.

My goal is to get someone else to do every time-consuming task I am responsible for. So even when I can‘t find anyone as good as me to do one, I ask myself, "Who could do this job adequately?" I then give it to that person (and supervise him or her).

I encourage my subordinates to delegate, too. That gives them more time to take on progressively more challenging tasks from me.

4. Reduce the Amount of Time You Spend on Personal Maintenance

When I explain my six timesaving techniques to strangers, this one is the least popular. However, I probably save 30 to 45 minutes each day by spending less time on the following:
The Morning Ritual - You don‘t need to spend 15 minutes each morning under a hot shower. It wastes water and energy. Two minutes is plenty of time. This could be increased to five minutes if you wash your hair--which you shouldn‘t do more than twice a week. (Even with a good conditioner, shampoo damages your hair.) Dressing should take no more than five minutes if you‘ve: (1) simplified your wardrobe, and (2) planned what you will be wearing the night before.
Coffee and/or Smoke Breaks - These are two classic time wasters. If you care about your health, you shouldn‘t be smoking or drinking more than two cups of coffee a day. Drink your coffee at your desk and cut out the cigarettes completely.
Personal Phone Calls - Do your socializing after work hours. If you must handle a personal phone call, keep it to the bare bones--a minute or two.
Personal E-Mails - Except for emergencies, there is no reason to spend time on personal correspondence during working hours.
Interruptions - When people walk into your office to have a chat, smile and ask them when they‘d like to schedule an appointment "to talk about it" and how many minutes they think it will require. Do this a few times and you will notice the interruptions will slow to a trickle.

5. Spend Less Time Working Out

Naturally, this will save you time only if you currently spend a lot of time working out. For many years, I didn‘t work out at all--and it wreaked havoc on my body. I had no stamina, a bad back, and I got sick often. Over the past 10 years, I gradually increased my daily routine. Eventually, I was working out three hours a day, six days a week which was simply too much. I‘ve since cut that back drastically. Here‘s what I do now:

6:30 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. -- Yoga or Pilates (see "Word to the Wise," below), focusing on loosening the tight areas and strengthening the stomach.

12:30 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. -- Strength or Circuit training. Strength training employs heavier weights and circuit training focuses on cardio.

5:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. -- Jiu Jitsu. My sport. Wrestling. It‘s a good combination of strength, cardio, flexibility, and mental acuity.

6. Learn to Say "No"

For me, this was the most difficult task. Having spent a lifetime taking on virtually any challenge offered, it has taken me a long time to learn to say "no." But in the process I learned a valuable lesson--because so many of the things I said "yes" to in the past turned out to be unproductive.

You can‘t expect to find and keep extra time in your life if you continue to fill up the time you have doing work that accomplishes other peoples‘ goals. So the next time someone asks you to do something, say, "That sounds like an interesting/great challenge/idea. Can I think about it briefly and get back to you with an answer by (deadline)?" Then ask yourself the following four questions:

"Is this a job that advances my goals?"

If it isn‘t: "What specific benefit could I get from accomplishing it?"

If none: "Who could I delegate this task to?"

If no one: "What is the best way to say ‘no‘?"

Use Your Extra Time Doing What Matters Most

Somewhere inside you a fire is burning. It is your core desire--your deepest, truest idea about what you‘d like to do ... the person you‘d like to become.

If you can vent that fire, it will give you all the energy, imagination, and boldness you need to make your life full and rich and satisfying. If you ignore that fire, it will consume everything that is potentially great and good about you. It will burn out your secret hopes, desires, and passions, one at a time, and leave you--as an older person reflecting back on your life--with a cold, charred core.

By getting up early each morning and making those early hours--as well as the rest of your day--more productive, you can make your life into exactly what it should be. What it should be, of course, is different for every person. Only by digging down deep and finding out what really motivates you--by identifying your core desire--can you find the fire that will fuel your future.

How to Find Me Time for Exhausted Mothers

Mothers are notorious for taking on more than they can handle. You're a mother and you're suppose to be able to do it all and be perfect at it. There's a mother's rule book somewhere that says you can do it. Mothers can take on the world and not get tired. If you don't do everything and not get tired , you get sent to the land of mother guilt. Dad's can work come home sit in his favorite chair , watch TV and nobody makes him feel guilty. But if mom tries that , you'd think the world was coming to an end. In reality Mom's get tired, mother's become exhausted and every once in a while mother has to say "that's enough" I need a break. There's a few things you can do to get relieve.

Instructions - things you'll need: Determination to have some me time

1. Insist on one night a month away from it all. A night out with the girls, join a club, play bridge, take a class for one night let dad baby sit and you get out of the house.

2. Practice breathing exercises. This is something you can do while you're taking a shower, making breakfast, or doing any of the dozens of things you're expected to do. This gets the blood flowing and energizes the body.

3. Take a fifteen minute nap. Do this before the kids get home for school or while the baby take its afternoon nap. Mothers need this afternoon pick-me-up.

4. Let grandma baby sit while you take a fragrant bubble bath. Don't forget the nice smelling candles. Just what a mother needs to relieve the stress.

Tips & Warnings:
Take care of you own health. Everybody benefits when mother health is good.
Make housework a family project. This teaches pride.
Have ten minute pick-up. Where everybody spends ten minutes putting all their things away. Give a prize for the one that does the best job.
Be selfish sometimes. Mothers are people .

Today, I would like all Team members to think about the relationship of Positive Thinking, Meditation and Me Time.

Positive Thinking Tools

Positive thinking has the power to transform your life from mediocre to magnificent. Mayo Clinic suggests that positive thinking can reduce stress and depression levels, reduce your risk of heart disease and provide you with better coping skills during hard times. WebMD supports Mayo Clinic's claim of positive thinking to help prevent heart disease and further suggests it can help patients with heart disease increase survival rates. Implementing positive thinking tools in your life can help you feel better and improve relationships with family and friends.

Journaling - Journaling can help you keep track of positive thoughts.

Keep a journal of both positive and negative daily events. Read the journal at the end of the week, and pay close attention to the positive days. Think about how you felt and what made that particular day happy for you. Write down 3 statements regarding how you made that day positive. You might write down, "I kept my head up even when my boss yelled at me" or "I stopped my bad mood from lasting all day by taking a five-minute break." Add positive affirmations to this list every week and use these thoughts to get you through a rough day. Read these statements every morning before work or school to keep you in a positive frame of mind.

Meditation - Meditation can help you achieve an inner calmness.

Meditation can help you gain a more positive perspective on your life and stressful situations. Meditation allows you to focus your mind on more positive images and situations through breathing, chanting or other means. Several types of meditation exist. Guided meditation uses your five senses and distinct images to relax and refocus your mind in a positive way. Mantra meditation uses a repeated word or phrase to calm you and prevent negative thoughts. Qi gong and Tai chi are traditional Chinese methods of meditation using movement and breathing exercises to achieve a positive state of mind.

Keep It in Perspective - Consider your thoughts in relation to other aspects of your life.

Be aware of the perspective you are placing on your thoughts and make attempts to keep that perspective upbeat and positive. Avoid comparisons to other people or situations, as this might bring you down or create negative feelings. For example, if you are unhappy with your physical appearance and begin to compare yourself to others you feel are more attractive, immediately stop the thought. Begin to think about your positive qualities and other important people, places and things in your life. Consider if your current thought would be valid in a month, a year or five years. Looking at the big picture, so to speak, of your life can help you balance negative thoughts about appearance or performance when they arise.

Self-Talk and Reframing - Reframing your thoughts can help keep you on a positive track.

Create a positive running commentary to use during your day. Tell yourself you will have a good day, it is OK to be five minutes late as long as you get there alive and that you are lucky to have the air you breathe and the food you eat. It might sound cliché, but it can be a powerful yet simple way to keep your mind focused on positive thoughts. Reframing your thoughts involves thinking about things with an alternative and positive viewpoint. For example, instead of saying, "I woke up late and today is going to be such a bad day", reframe your thought to say, "I am late, but I got to sleep an extra half hour and I feel refreshed."

A Woman's Guide to 'Me' Time - Part 3
If You Have 30-60 Minutes

* Get a massage, a facial, or a mani-pedi.
* Take a nap.
* Schedule a class that you've always wanted to take just for fun. For instance, Amy Tiemann took an improv comedy class to get a night to herself after her daughter was born.
* Plan a long walk with a friend. Commit to it early in the week and honor the commitment. You're not training for anything, you're not trying to race-walk, you're just taking a long stroll with a good friend and enjoying the day.

Add your own favorites to these lists. Whatever you choose to do with your "me" time, make it relaxing and restorative.

"If you don't feel like it works for you, try something else. Shoulds' are the enemy of relaxation. Don't think about what you should do, but about what makes you thrive."

A Woman's Guide to 'Me' Time - Part 2

If You Have 15-30 Minutes

* Read one chapter of a book you've wanted to make time for. Keep a basket in your office or living room with a good book, magazine, crossword puzzle, or other short escapes.
* Find a nearby park and go for a brisk walk.
* Putter. This doesn't mean cleaning the house or organizing your kids' clothes. Instead, it means doing little things at home that you enjoy, like trimming the rose bush and putting together a bouquet for your office or kitchen.
* Soak in the tub. If you're a parent, make sure another adult is on duty to make sure no one's going to yell "Mom!" Plan so you'll have some fabulous bath goodies on hand. Don't forget a glass of ice water or wine.

Now & Zen: Easy Relaxation Techniques - A Calmer, Healthier You is Within Reach
-- By Leanne Beattie, Health & Fitness Writer

.... constant stress can have a negative impact on your health, contributing to ailments like insomnia, emotional overeating and high blood pressure.

Instead of reaching for chocolate the next time you feel your shoulders creeping up to your ears with tension, try one (or all!) of the following relaxation techniques:

Deep breathing, an easy and convenient way to relax, it is the core of many other relaxation techniques. You can practice deep breathing anywhere. Simply take ten deep breaths, lifting your chest to fill your lungs completely and then exhaling all the way. Each breath will relax your body a little bit more and you will feel the tension seep out of your muscles.

Progressive muscular relaxation (PMR) helps release muscle tension. .... Sit comfortably and close your eyes. Start by tightening a group of muscles, such as your fists, as much as possible. Hold this tension for a few seconds and then relax the muscles. Once your muscles are relaxed, consciously soften them even further in order to be as relaxed as possible....

Mental imagery, or the picture in your mind's eye, can help you regroup and relax. Picture an idyllic and peaceful scene, such as a meadow or a beach, and use all of your senses. Do you smell jasmine in the air? Can you hear the birds singing and feel the light breeze on your skin? Your body can’t tell the difference between a thought and a real event, so bring your peaceful scene to mind the next time you’re feeling anxious. This "mini vacation" will help you feel refreshed, as if you’d really visited to a tropical paradise.....

Meditation is the conscious act of focusing on one thought, object, or word. This deliberate focus occupies your mind and diverts your attention away from the problems that are causing you stress. ....

Sit comfortably, close your eyes and relax your body, concentrating on breathing rhythmically. Feel your breath and focus on each breath you take. Thoughts will come to mind, but just let them pass without giving them any attention. You can also focus your attention on a phrase, such as a positive affirmation, an object, such as a candle flame, or a comforting word like "calm." Try clearing your mind for 10 minutes in the morning and again before you go to sleep, gradually increasing the amount of time you meditate each day.

Relaxing music and sounds can help you clear your mind after a busy day....

While most people can handle short-term stress with few difficulties, ongoing stress can suck the joy out of life. By dealing with problems in a positive way, you will be able to maintain your healthy lifestyle even when life is throwing you curveballs. Who needs chocolate when peace of mind is just one thought away?

Which relaxation technique do you practice (or plan to try)?

Deep breathing
Progressive muscular relaxation
Mental imagery
Meditation
Listening to relaxing music
Mind-body exercise like yoga and Tai chi

Do you know I was feeling GUILTY for lounging around with my coffee and morning paper this morning?? Thank you for that post, Xana, I feel much better now!

It's been an extremely busy week, so this morning I just decided I was going to do NOTHING! First thing in the morning, Hubby wanted me to give him his orders for today (he's anxious to get started on yard work, but needs me to list/prioritize our tasks). I told him it could all wait until this afternoon, LOL!

A Woman's Guide to 'Me' Time - How to find the time for yourself and why it matters.
By Gina Shaw

Women today have been told we have it all -- careers, families, kids, community involvement, and relationships. But all too often, having it all leaves us with no time or strength left for ourselves.

Recent research has shown that women today are less happy than they have been over the past 40 years. There are many theories about why, but lack of free time can be a major reason.

But how can you make it happen? Make Yourself a Priority

**First, realize how important it is.

OK, so you're convinced. It's time to take time for you. Now, when can you fit it in? Don't wait for the time to just magically appear. It won't.

**Schedule Your "Me" Time

You don’t need a lot of time, either. Here are ideas for making the most of even 5 minutes of "me" time.

**If You Have 5-10 Minutes

* Sit on the porch with a cup of coffee and the newspaper. Or a cup of coffee and no newspaper. Just watch the clouds go by. No phone or calendar allowed.
* Call a friend to chat. This doesn't mean planning the bake sale or organizing the neighborhood watch -- just talk, without an agenda.
* Move. Get up from your desk, stretch, and walk around the block or up and down a flight of stairs.
* Breathe deeply. While you're sitting in your office, car, or home, focus on breathing slowly and gently for five minutes. It's OK if your mind wanders a bit, but don't start planning what you have to do next -- just follow your breath.
* Pet your pet. Focus for five minutes on cuddling with cat or dog. You'll both feel better.

Xana,
I recently picked up my well-worn copy of "The Power of Positive Thinking" to write a speech for Toastmasters, and I was inspired all over again! What a great book!

Recently, I have been waking up and saying "I am a Force to be Reckoned With!" before even rolling out of bed! I blogged about it to explain why this is in my head:

Great I am's, everyone!

Thanks, Metobe!

Today I would like to suggest a great book for self help. I have several that I hold in high regard but the top of the list is:

Norman Vincent Peale "The Power of Positive Thinking"

It is of practical value to learn to like yourself. Since you must spend so much time with yourself you might as well get some satisfaction out of the relationship.

I am optimistic.
I'm making my life better. Yea! Better health, feeling better, getting more out of life.
Setting goals, making plans to achieve them, carrying them out. What a concept! haha
Ironically, since I make my living achieving project goals for business, I've never applied goal setting and planning to my personal life. Now that I've put it into practice, it's the single most motivating thing I've ever done and really helps with a positive outlook. Spark is great for tracking progress on goals and tracking your consistency in carrying out the steps for reaching them. Consistency over time is what will get you there.

btw, Xana. Thank you for keeping things going here, as you do. Although I'm only recently back at Spark, I have gotten value from several of the posts I've seen from you - like the links below, the humor posts, etc. So your "grateful" post is relevant since others of us are grateful for you too.

Consistency over time, not perfection, creates fitness success.

The power of I am....

I got to thinking about the power of the statement "I am". So often we follow "I am" with negative things. "I am fat. I am tired. I am too busy." I remembered a discussion of this somewhere and I remembered the affirmation "I am whole, perfect, strong, powerful, loving, harmonious and happy."

Here is my challenge to you. Today, come to this thread and post a one word postive. Such as "I am healthy. I am happy. I am slender."

My "I am" statement for today is:

I am grateful! I AM grateful for the knowledge to listen to my body's signals when it needs a break from too much information and just relax and have fun.

I watch the Julia Roberts' movie Eat Pray Love. Nerdy title but a great movie, especially for learning self control and/or self respect.

Anyone with stress might google "Mesics Theory", I saw this in our daily newspaper, it is a series of stress relief practices. Other than that I don't know much about it. Yoga and pilates are supposed to help also. Did anyone see my blog on aromatherapy? I am a believer!

Make Time For Yourself . . "Me" Time

I find that when I am feeling a little down or not wanting to exercise, I take a few minutes and think of myself. I'm not being selfish, but in a way I am. I need to take care of ME in order to take care of others. I think of how far I have come and what it has taken me to get here. Then I think . . Do I really want to go back to the way I was? The answer is usually a resounding NO and that puts me in the mood to do some exercise.

Maybe I am wrong but I feel "Me Time" is a state of mind. "Me time" could be ... just 10 or 15 minutes of thinking about something that is pleasing to you. This could be done while riding the bus, riding an elevator, walking from point a to point b. At first, it might take a few minutes of preparation but then after repetition it can become a habit.

I used to get bad headaches ... I found that if I took some "Me Time" watching a funny movie that the headaches were gone when the movie was over.

Team, let's get creative. Try some experimenting and share with the team "how you found a few minutes" that work!

With my tests and grandmother the way it is I am still a stressful week. I need to find some way of getting me time. I am with multiple disabilities so my homework which should take minutes in some cases takes at least an hour and the long ones may even take days. I don't know if it is lack of confidence or the fact that I need help with planning, but I do not see how me time is doable when I am in school.

I don't find it at all difficult to create ME time...lol...

I have a Monday and usually a Friday as "my days' and it takes something pretty important to prevent that....
I started doing that a couple of years ago when I was so burned out and peopled out I just wanted to spend time at homw where it was quiet....
I actually draw a line through both those days in my diary and do my own thing those days....

today i have been for a 10k walk...before the rain....yay..../I have done some study.....set out some goals for the next 2 1/2 weeks and now I am going to the supermarket to get some bits and tonight I am going to a fashion show with my daughter

I don't always do this many things on a 'me'day however still enjoy doing nothing at all which is what my days usually are....

Onicam, How are you doing this morning? This is what I am talking about ..."creating Me time!
Homework seems more like a goal to me.

When my kids where little, my Me time was when I went grocery shopping. That was the only time I had for Me.... So I would slowly walk through the store looking at new food items, getting familiar with fruits and veggies, etc.

When I had a stressful job, my Me time was a long Aromatherapy bath. I would fill the tub, adding some aromatherapy bath salts, lite an aromatherapy candle and the put my head back and enjoy soaking up the scents.

Now I usually take showers and have a shower stool. I give myself an pedicure and sloughing off excess skin.

I hope you will join the challenge and share how you found some "Me" time.

I saw this on another Team and thought it would make a good Challenge for our team.

"One of the difficulties that many of us share is the limitation of only 24 hours in a day (25 on that one day when we turn our clocks back in the fall emoticon).

Often, the thing that keeps me from getting exercises in is that I'm busy with the rest of life. That causes me stress. So in the past I'd eat more, stay up later to get things done, and so forth. We have challenges to deal with the sleep and the stress and even family fitness, but what about that basic component of time management?

Something that helps us to prioritize our activities in life, keeping family up front, job where it needs to be, and so forth -- but also helps us to prioritize our own health & wellness into the mix. Like they say on the airplanes: if the masks drop from above, take care of your own mask first, before assisting others. We need to realize that it's not selfishness or self-centeredness to include our true needs!"
