Thanks for the weekend encouragement. This has always been the most difficult time. The kids are home and the weekend is always filled with activities (and quick meals).

Good luck with the concession stand this weekend. It is hard to not know what is offered. Just remember to make the best choices you can and not dwell on less than ideal choices that have to be made.

Yeah, it's all about making the best choice with what you are given at any point in time. If you simply must have a hot dog or hamburger, then just like you said....make sure you are really good in the days leading up and the days after. And drink lots of water! Try to eat lots before you go and maybe afterwards so you aren't really hungry when you are there. Is an all day thing?? Those darn concession stands can fool you! You might be better off getting a bran muffin or something like that. I once heard that movie popcorn with butter was like eating packages of bacon!! I never googled it to find out if it was true...but can you imagine??? If they sell subs, that might be a good choice. I'm sure they will have fruit.

But again...just make the best choice you can. Don't stress over it, just go prepared (in your mind) and don't let it throw you off course for the rest of the week! You'll do great! ....and hey! They might surprise you and offer some GREAT choices!

Thanks, Ricochetbear. I think the hardest part, like you said, is not knowing what my options will be. Then the next step is to do the best I can with what is available, and not let it mess with my plans for other days. In the past (before I started Sparking), I would just throw in the towel about the whole thing. But now I will try to eat cleaner on my days at home.

Thanks for your help and support!!

tretra - great idea on the wraps!

gee foods that are in the concession area, I guess that would depend on what they have there. Not all of them carry the same thingsor the same type of things

nachos...but they usually use a processed type of crappy cheese, could scrape away some of the cheese. a serving of the chips is between ten and twenty depending on their size

I have noticed the odd stand does have a salad of some sort...ask for the dressing on the side and use sparingly as they usually just slop way too much on

juice is a good choice, though watch these as ones like pink grapefruit are usually a cocktail of juices and have added sugars, anything labeled cocktail, blend or drink has added juices and sugars and tend not to be as good for you

a hamburger patty would be better for you than a hot dog, though do watch how much of the bun you eat if they are the large kaiser type. a regular small bun is equal to 2 bread whereas the larger kaiser style would be 3 or 4 depending on its over all size

pop corn...can have 3 cups of popcorn per 1 serving if you leave off the big squirts of butter they slather on

some have baked potatoes. Try not to pile it up with sour cream and butter!. If the stand has salsa ask for that instead, gives the potato some zing

chicken nuggets if you dont eat all the coating they are cooked with

i m really scraping the bottom of the barrel in my mind, as every concession area is different. They stock them by what sells best in that particular areas clientele. The suggestions I have said are ones I know you could get at one here in my town, but not neccessarily be available at one in yours, so not sure if I helped you or not

Thanks for the ideas. I had come up with some of them for the cooler. I guess my real question is: what are my best options at a food concession area? Hopefully I can access the cooler, but if not, then what? Ugh, I just alwasy feel yucky after eating that kind of food!

I know, isn't it crazy that we can't bring our own food? But the coach was very clear: he has seen teams kicked out of tournaments for bringing in their own food. Nice, huh?

PS, TRETRA, I am REALLY glad I don't have boys who play hockey. I hate the cold! Going outside to warm up does not sound good!

Great ideas! I find wraps are easy for "on the go" too. Some chicken, lettuce, pickle. or chicken, greek and feta or just chicken and hummus is good too!

I can't believe you aren't allowed to bring your own food! That's crazy! They must have healthy choices or I don't think they would be allowed to do that! I mean, what if you were diabetic, like bear? I have a friend that has celiac disease and can't have anything with glucose in it and trust me....it's in practically everything! She calls ahead and says because of health reasons she is on a special diet. It works everywhere. Even in restaurants they prepare things to her specifications. She told me that I should start doing the same. I'm not lying...my health DOES depend on it!

and the same with YOU! You shouldn't have to eat pizza, hot dogs, french fries, etc.. You're health depends on it!

....as for walking to the car. Dress warm baby! Think of it as getting your steps in for the day! Trust me...I know ALL about the cold. I live on the East Coast, Canada. My son played hockey for 17 years. There were some rinks that were so cold we had to go OUT to get warm!! And outside was -20! (Needless to say, I enjoyed watching him play baseball much better!!)

well, I think I would pack up several pieces of fresh fruit each. Perhaps some cut up veggies with some light dip in another container. Some cheese sticks or maybe some hard boiled eggs. Some crackers of some sort if you want some carbs on hand, or some pretzels. Could make some small baggies of mixed green salad... there are really quite a few options to keep it healthy and on the light side. Good luck!

Thanks tretra! I hope we all have a light healthy weekend!

Hello! Thanks for the pep talk heading into the weekend.

I am looking for some advice....my daughter plays club volleyball and tournaments start next Saturday. We have to be at the gym by 7 am, sometimes driving up to 90 mins to get there. We are not allowed to bring outside food into the gym, we have to eat at the concessions area. So of course I won't know what's available until I get there. I will take a cooler with some healthy (and undoubtedly cheaper) offerings, but I don't know if there will be a long walk to the car (I love in balmy Wisconsin, so weather could be a factor). Any suggestions for trying to eat healthy on these tournament days?? I am kind of panicking! I think my mindset is finally getting on track, so I really don't want these tourney days to de-rail my efforts. Thanks in advance!
