Nearly the end of term for me, one more class next Wednesday. Hope that some of the busy-ness will calm down now. Except that I'm committed to Camp NaNo and editing last November's novel, there are problems with our French bank account, I'm going to the Discworld Convention in less than a month, and my blood sugar levels are out of control. Oh well.

Think not. Do.

So much stuff going on medically that I just need to focus on myself for the next few days at least, work out my nutrition, do some yoga or more if the pain lets me and try to get back on track. Rough month, June, lol.

Did I say no babysitting duties? We seem to have spent half our lives recently doing just that.

At last, babysitting for the month is over and it's half term next week so no classes. All the commitment we have is Bank Holiday Monday's Giant Car Boot Sale and Vintage Farm Machinery Rally.

My flash fiction has been published by the Garden Gnome people: http://gardengnomepubs.com/bad-seed/
you can read it on line for free. I got my essay and piece of fiction in on time, and now I'm doing edits on my manuscript from last November. I need to add at least 10k words to the total.

It sounds like things have been looking up for you! Yay!

I also managed to start sleeping again through the night so hopefully that whole thing is done with and I've been alcohol free and cooking and working out more so I'm in a good place at the moment. Yay x2!

Slog on with it, you'll get through this when your subconscious works out what's wrong.

Had a busy end of term, four things to get in (two done, two to do within the next week) and a flash fiction just submitted to the Garden Gnome people. Next term I'm down for two courses, on Tuesday morning, one Wednesday morning, though one won't have much in the way of homework thank goodness. Grandsons have got over the chickenpox, son-in-law has handed in his crutches, life may be getting back to normal. As long as it's not a signal for different things to start turning life upside down.

Think not. Do.

If you do what you've always done, you'll get what you've always got.

I've been getting bad sleep lately. Some of the stress has dissipated at work so I don't think that's the reason but every night, for the last four nights, I've been waking up at 3am or 3:30am and haven't been able to get back to sleep until after 4am. Unfortunately I get up every work day at 6am. I usually go to sleep around 11pm or a little before and fall asleep within minutes. I would really rather not attempt to go to sleep any earlier since I rarely have time after work to do anything and I don't want to sleep so close to when I finish dinner. So I've been kind of sluggish at work and it's been hard for me to wake up lately. I don't really know why though.

Downloads now around 350, she says she's getting a couple a day maybe. All good.

They've closed a bridge near her house, initially for a week over half term, but it was more damaged than they thought, so they've closed it for another two weeks. We've taken the spare car and parked it on our side: at least they're letting pedestrians across now. Most of the places she needs to go are on this side, and it's a minimum of 25 miles extra by the shortest detour, just to get William a couple of miles up the road for his playgroup.

Think not. Do.

Fee has got so blase about it (and so many other things to think about) she hasn't looked at her download numbers for a bit. Her husband has dropped his motorbike (her motorbike actually) on his foot due to a patch of black ice, and broken a bone, which means he has a supporting boot on it and is on crutches. However like most men he has taken no notice of instructions to keep off it, and his last FB post says it's gone purple, which doesn't sound good.

We went down South last week for a few days, and there is still plenty of flooding, and part of the cliff at Bournemouth where we were staying has fallen onto the beach. We've had a bit of dry weather though, and the floods are beginning to dry up. As long as we don't get lots more rain.

Think not. Do.

Yay on the book downloads! Tell her congrats!!

Yeah I got spoiled this last weekend because the weather was in the 50s and I was missing Spring so much I could've cried. Now we're back to 30s plus we had like an inch of snow fall just as the warm weather had cleared off the majority of the last snowfall so I'm all BLEH about the weather currently, lol!

Fee has had 280 downloads of her book last time she looked (she no longer looks every hour!). I've found my notebook, and the creative writing class homework looks like being a good one to add to the collection too. Haven't worked out why my flash fiction nearly always has a horror element to it, when I don't usually write horror at all. Strange.
In other news, we've been having problems with the electricity since the last gale. It's not been off long enough for the freezer to defrost, luckily, but we had to go to Fee's yesterday to have a bath and a hot meal - theirs has been off too but they have heating, hot water and cooking on the Raeburn which doesn't rely on electricity. We have nothing but a small woodburning stove with a flat top you can put a kettle or pot on.

Think not. Do.

This is really REALLY late but that is AWESOME! Don't worry about her outdoing you, you do you and she's going to do what she's going to do. Just do what makes you happy and go forward with it!

Those are words I go by because I hope to one day publish a series of books that I'm currently working on and I believe I can do it, I just need to really keep on writing!

For some reason I've stopped getting notifications from some of my teams. I've checked the settings and they're all fine, it just seems to be random and without reason.

Big news is that my daughter has just put her first book up on Smashwords - Away With The Fairies by Felicity Knight. Not on Amazon yet, but I hope it soon will be. It's a comic fantasy involving demons, Valkyries, and a talking toad. I think it's funny, and I hope I would have been honest enough to tell her if it wasn't ready. I'm very proud of her, and if I could only find my Creative Writing Group notebook I'd be preparing a book of flash fiction of my own, because after all I can't let her outdo me.

Think not. Do.

It's been a rough few weeks but the new goal for Memorial Day has motivated me. I always look forward to warm weather and to sunlight waking me up so once that starts up it'll be easier to want to get up and to get the day started. I'm so happy I just can't wait for Spring and Summer!

Still very motivated, luckily! My jeans keep me motivated, lol. If they feel tight, that doesn't feel good. So it makes me want to lose those pounds. I really have to fix up my workout playlist though, maybe make some other playlists that I can toss around when I want to mix it up.

Dont worry its the same over here. I try to at least walk to and from work to get in a little something if I know I am not going to get in any other kind of workout. Its so bad because I did one of Jills body revolution workouts and I was SUPER sore for like 2 days which goes to show I hadnt done much before that workout and it kicked my butt!!

Im still try to eat healthy, its just the same thing with me, I do good some days and on other days its eh. BUT I definitely want to push myself a little harder so when I go to the beach I dont feel so icky lol!

I've kind of been the same way. I'm still working out (maybe not every day but it's not something I can drop anymore like I did before when I regained all the weight) but I'm not motivated TO work out. I just do it because I have to. When I DO work out though, I bust my butt with the workouts. So I can feel kind of squishy still and other days I feel fantastic and I'm all, "YEAH!" It's weird. Plus I'm hit and miss with my diet/nutrition. Most days I can eat well up until dinner and then I come home and there's nothing to eat and I'm the only one who cooks in the house (usually) because the guys order out. So it's kind of a bad cycle and I can't seem to get out of the rut to WANT to cook when I get home. Bah. This was all easier before there were two against one in the apt. emoticon

Whatever the case, I hope updating and checking in every day to Spark in general will motivate me to shape up. It's just tough these days.

Thats great!

Im doing my workouts but now I have to focus on getting back into eating healthier and tracking my food. I am not eating horribly but I am not eating well either, like for example I didnt really eat anything until dinner. I had a mocha latte with whipped cream for breakfats, I know not good but was amazing! lol And a small breakfast wrap from dunkin donuts, I wasnt really hungry when lunch time came around so I just had my nutrition bar, and then from 2 - 4:45 I was doing face painting so when I get off desk I had tea and then was it. So now its just my eating habits that I gotta keep in check but honestly I came to terms with that fact that I am never going to be completely thin, flat belly and all lol! I am such a foody its hard for me to NOT want to try new foods that I know arent that healthy but thats just what I like. After we finished insanity is when I was like yea I am never gonna be super model thin but I am ok with that!

So I am getting kinda stressed/guitly with being team leader on the Jillian Michaels team and I have thought about resigning lol I asked for 2 volunteers to help me out and one already dropped it after a week because people werent being as active as she hope and she went on and on about how she realizes now people are just on spark pretending to lose weight but no one is even participating in the chats, she only gets 4 people that comments on threads blah blah blah! I got annoyed but I was like do what you gotta do, good luck with your journey and thanks anyways. Im just mad that I got stuck as the official team leader because its such a big team and I just cant keep up with it, plus I feel guilty not coming on to this team or my music spark team, I havent been able to check up on friends. Im waiting for my laptop to come back so I can spend one morning just going to each page and catching up!

One of the reasons why I COMPLETELY stopped getting on spark for 2 weeks was cause I felt like everything had to do with spark, which isnt a bad thing, but instead of motivating, its been stressing... lol idk maybe its just me...

I want to get more dresses and shorts for the summer. I actually like the way my legs look. They are not perfect, but I do see the muscle on them sometimes and my thighs dont rub against eachother anymore so I am really proud about that!

This sunday I am going to do a nice long run in the park! I havent been doing any running which is BAD cause I need to prepare for this half marathon! I think sunday is going to be nice out so it should be a nice run!

This morning I did the cardio workout and when I get home I will do workout 3. Gotta double up a little but I am really enjoying the workouts! I have half a day at work today which is awesome! I have to go to a meeting at 2 and my boss said to just go home right after the meeting. The meeting should be no more then an hour which means I will get home nice and early to workout, relax, and just enjoy the rest of the day!

Ok this turned out to be like a blog... sorry! lol

I hear that! Last week was pretty bad. I didn't do the cardio workout today because I woke up headachy. Even right now, I popped two migraine pills and two advil since getting up this morning at 6am and this headache is still here. Unbelievable. A part of me wants to go home and just sleep but I know I can hold out to the end of the workday and that way save my time because I have so little of it left.

But I'll be honest, last week really did me good. I've been so good so far this week concerning fitness and nutrition. I don't always hit the usual numbers but I haven't been going over (usually my fiber and my protein suffer but not by much) but I come pretty close and when I do hit, I stay comfortably in my range so I'm really proud of myself. Plus I did that bikini shopping earlier today so I'm finally getting into the mindset that summer is pretty much here and I busted my butt for so long trying to look good for it that why would I want to screw it up now?? So I'm currently in a good place, I think, and I'm happy about it. emoticon

Ok I really need to get my head on straight! Summer is right around the corner which means beach time which means my body needs to be in tip top shape! The last two weeks I didnt workout much cause I was having some serious tummy issues so I would just get home and go right to bed every day! This week has been better, my problem right now is once again eating.. I am not eating horribly but I am not eating that well either.. Thats always my downfall.. I can be doing great one minute then the next I mess up and so my weight just keeps fluctuating!

I am kinda dissappointed in myself cause after doing the insanity workout I loved the way my body was looking, but I havent kept up with myself as much as I should so my body is slowly going back to what it looked like before insanity, I must stop! I wanna look hot in my bikini, and shorts, and dresses cause I definitely want to show more skin this summer! lol

I also havent been on spark really cause I kinda just been spending my free time doing other things, so I hope you all have been doing great! I am going to try my best to get back into!

Sometimes TASO you just need some time to readjust yourself! I am sure from here on in things will start getting better!

I burned out, you guys. And I kinda realized it was happening until it actually happened. I pretty much just locked myself away last week, nothing but work and home, not eating right, no fitness. Just my dog and me, lol. No one ever gets my attention away from Tucker. But beyond that I spent all last week hitting bottom and then refocusing on me. So time to start again, slowly and surely but at least I feel better about myself now.

I am so stressed out that all I can think about are all the things I plan on doing this summer (mostly beach and park days, maybe a few movies here and there) and just relaxing and having fun. Anything to get my mind off work and money. I NEED SUMMER!

Tip of the day: 10 Minute Mindshift for May!

Think about the habits you are trying to develop: exercise, cooking at home, meditating, journaling... and look for a way to get started in just 10 minutes! "The journey of 1,000 miles begins with the first step" so... let's take that step today!

Here are several ideas you might consider:
~Cut up some fresh fruit and store it at eye level in the fridge
~Go for a walk
~Have a cup of herbal tea and enjoy a moment of quiet
~Do a set of old-fashioned push-ups and sit-ups
~Fill out your food journal
~Eat breakfast!
~Assemble a salad to have with dinner
~Try to get as many Spark Points in one day as you can
~Get outside and soak up some Vitamin D
~Plan your dinner menus for the upcoming week
~Lift handweights
~S-T-R-E-T-C-H
~Eat a banana
~Add 10 minutes of sleep
~Drink a glass of water and chill a pitcher for later
~Jump on the stationary bike or elliptical trainer
~Meditate
~Find some inspirational pics online
~"Like" healthy pages on Facebook to keep you motivated
~Get up and put your workout clothes on immediately
~Talk about your journey with someone you trust
~Look at yourself in the mirror and smile at your beautiful self

Once you’ve experienced the lift that comes from just 10 of these health-focused minutes, you’ll be on the lookout for more and more windows in your day that you can use to invest in your well-being. It’s easier to find six of them than one uninterrupted hour! And that’s the 10-minute mindshift.

What would you do with your 10 minutes?

Yeah I'm still getting over that dream, lol!

I was having allergies or a cold last week so I was still working out but I was phlegmy by Saturday and now I have a hard time talking without coughing so that's where I am currently. Beyond that, nutrition seems to be back on track as is my fitness. Now I just gotta get the motivation to WANT to work out instead of knowing that I HAVE to work out.

Last week was a rough week for health all around. I was sick plus had back pain, my guy was also sick so he was home for most of the week which gave me no place to work out even if I had been able to. Because I was sick, I didn't cook anything for dinner so we ended up ordering out a lot plus I'm really stressed at work. I had a dream two nights ago with a baby hippo in it and supposedly a hippo in dreams signifies my being territorial or being challenged and an obstacle that is getting to me.

Um. YES. LOL.

I just finished giving my mom a whole bunch of clothes that no longer fit me. She works with mentally retarded and does their shopping for them but sometimes in between the time when she gets extra money to go clothes shopping, she'll give them clothes that she no longer wears or clothes that I no longer wear, lol! So yesterday I gave her a ton of big pants and now only have my regular sized jeans at home and the goal jeans I usually buy. My teen weight jeans are still in my drawer as well but I was ten pounds heavier when I used to wear them so now they are just there as milestone jeans, woohoo! But besides that, I currently have jeans that are a smaller size that I wore when I was at goal weight (I'm three pounds over at the moment but every pound counts!) and I have an even smaller sized pair of jeans that are current goal jeans. I plan to try to fit into them this month or next month!

Tried on some jeans today and fit into 14's .. love it.. felt great.. they could be a little bigger but a bigger top could work temporarily.. any one have the same experience with jeans just a little too tight?

Nah, JM's workout comes after we finish BeachBody's Insanity! Woohoo!

This weather is messing me up, lol! I have a headache from the heat here. It's cool outside but because it was cold yesterday, the maintenance guys came in to fix our heat and now it's 80 degrees in the branch and I have a headache because of it. Even with the windows open, it's boiling in here!

On the upside, I pulled on a pair of jeans that I couldn't really wear before so while it's the size smaller than I'm comfortable wearing, I'm just proud of myself and kept them on for the day at work. Soon as I get home though, they're coming off. I prefer to wear a bigger size so I can lounge comfortably. emoticon

Sorry I'm afk so much, folks. I can't really update at work because the internet is sucky here and it takes ten minutes just to put down something I ate for lunch so I grew disgusted at trying to use this site at work. When I get home I only really update my food and fitness and that's it because I have other stuff to do. And I have no time in the morning because every minute counts when it comes to Insanity and then getting ready to go to work.

Also, my comp died over the weekend so just imagine.

I'm hoping to rock March. Got off to a bad start already though. Puppy was up at 4am sick and unable to keep stuff down/in so I already missed out on a lot of sleep. Also bf's brother is finally coming from PR to STAY so I probably won't get a workout in either.

HOWEVER. I will not let this get me down. Just gotta really find a way now.

Seems the challenge is the water drinking, lol! I got mine in yesterday, only made the six. But I'm pumped for March to begin. It's my countdown to Summer! Four months, watching as the weather gets warmer, to look good in a bikini! I love this time of year because Spring comes along and then summer and tans and beaches and hanging out with friends!

Wow, I may be having an issue from overtraining according to that last article. I've been waking up with some headaches (like this morning) and I've been working out pretty much nonstop for the last two weeks or so. I didn't work out on Saturday but I still went on a long walk with my pup. Maybe I need a day off? I just know that we're getting down to the wire for the cruise and I really want to see some results for it.

8 Reasons Why Your Workout Isn't Working

Sneaky Reasons Why You're Not Getting Results
-- By Jennipher Walters, Certified Personal Trainer and Fitness Instructor
SparkPeople advertisers help keep the site free! Learn more
We all know how fantastic working out is for your health. But what happens when your workouts aren't delivering the results you want? Or you're not getting the results you think you should be getting? While any kind of physical activity is good, some workout plans are better than others and—as you might suspect—a lot of other factors come into play when trying to lose weight and tone up. So if your workout isn't working for you, one of the following eight reasons could be to blame. Find out how to turn that around and get the results you deserve!

1. You're not working hard enough.
If you have been exercising consistently for several weeks, months or years, it's definitely time to increase the intensity and start pushing yourself. As you work out more and more, your body adapts and becomes more efficient at doing that certain activity. This means that over time, the 30-minute workout that was challenging for you three months ago doesn't provide the same results. In fact, you're actually burning fewer calories and your body is no longer changing if you're still doing the same old thing.

Get-Results Remedy: In order to get results from exercise, you have to regularly push yourself beyond your fitness comfort zone. Whether you increase the frequency, intensity, or duration of your workouts, you have to switch it up. Not sure where to start? Try adding an extra day of cardio onto your routine, testing out a new group exercise class at the gym, adding another loop around your walking track, or bumping up the incline and speed on the treadmill. Remember, when it comes to exercise, change is good—and that change should be challenging!

2. You're working too hard.
Yes, you can actually work out too hard and too much. If you're someone who goes all out in every workout, or rarely to never takes a day off to rest, you could actually be breaking your muscles down instead of building them. If you always feel tired and sore, have unexplained headaches, insomnia or just a general lack of motivation and an inability to complete your workouts, you may be overtraining.

Get-Results Remedy: Take three to five days off of exercise altogether. It may be hard for you to do this, but know that you must allow your body the time it needs to rest and recover. Get plenty of sleep each night and fill up on nutritious foods. Then slowly ease back into your routine, making shorter, less intense workouts part of your workout plan. And remember to always take one to two rest or easy active recovery days a week!

3. You haven't changed your diet.
Exercise is awesome, but if you're not eating a nutritious diet with the appropriate number of calories for weight management, you could be shooting yourself in the foot. Proper nutrition fuels your workouts, but eat too much and you could gain weight (or hurt your weight-loss efforts), and eat too little, and you won't have enough energy to exercise.

Get-Results Remedy: If you can't seem to see those muscles you're trying to build, start logging your foods to see how many calories you're eating a day. If you're regularly eating more than you should (it just takes an extra 100 calories a day to gain an extra pound a month), then try choosing lower-calorie versions of your favorite foods and slowly decreasing your caloric intake until you're at the right level! On the flip side of that, if you find that you're eating too few calories, that can also slow your metabolism and leave you drained at the gym. Find out how many calories you need to manage your weight by visiting your SparkPeople Nutrition Tracker.

4. You're only doing cardio. Yes, cardio is important for calorie burning, but a proper exercise plan includes cardio, strength training and flexibility. If you're just doing cardio, then you will be burning calories and strengthening your cardiovascular system, but you won't be really changing your body composition by building more muscle. For that you need strength training!

Get-Results Remedy: Lift weights or do body-weight exercises, such as lunges and push-ups, at least twice a week to reap the amazing benefits of resistance training; including decreased body fat, increased muscle mass and stronger bone density. For hardcore cardio fans, you can also try kettlebell training or circuit training, which is like getting a strength and cardio workout at the same time!

5. You reward yourself with food.
Do you allow yourself to have that extra piece of pizza or order that dessert when dining out because you "went to the gym" earlier? If so, you may be undoing all of that good calorie-burning with too many treats.

Get-Results Remedy: Familiarize yourself with the calorie contents of your favorite foods—and find out how many calories you're really burning through exercise. (SparkPeople's Nutrition Tracker and Fitness Tracker will help you learn!) Remember that while you may have run 3 miles at the gym, that only burned 300 calories, which isn't nearly equivalent to the calorie count in that brownie sundae you ate later. Focus on how good exercise makes you feel rather than what it allows you to eat after; and choose foods that fuel your workouts, rather than the other way around.

6. You're doing too much too soon.
Unfortunately, results don't happen overnight. It takes time and consistency to get in shape over the long haul. But how many of us decide that we're going to get in shape and then get totally gung-ho, spending hours at the gym only to find ourselves tired, sore and no thinner after a week or two?

Get-Results Remedy: Be patient. Remember that you're creating a lifestyle change that you can sustain for the rest of your life. While there's temptation to start off doing extra long and hard workouts, don't. Build up to doing those tough workouts gradually as the weeks go by. Not only will this prevent injury and give your body more time to adapt and change, it will also give your life and habits time to change—permanently!

7. You're trading sleep for workouts.
We're all so busy these days, and sometimes the only time to work out seems to be early in the morning—even if you were up late the night before working or with a child that couldn't sleep. But regularly swapping sleep for workouts can seriously hinder your weight-loss, as sleep triggers a number of hormones that influence cravings and a tendency for weight gain. In addition, too many sleepless nights will leave you tired and unfocused for your workouts, which means that you won't get much from your efforts. And did you know that sleep is a much needed part of a fitness plan, since a lot of recovery and repair happens while you rest each night? Skimp on the shut-eye, and it could also lead to symptoms of overtraining.

Get-Results Remedy: Start scheduling both your sleep and your workouts—and treat both as unbreakable appointments. Then follow SparkPeople's 4-week Better Sleep Challenge to make the most of those Z's! Exercising after an occasional sleepless night shouldn't pose too many problems. But if you're regularly swapping sleep for a sweat session, you could be doing more long-term harm than good. Sleep should come first—even before working out.

8. You sit all day.
Sure, you work out regularly, but what you do the rest of the day matters, too! If you put in a solid exercise session only to sit at a desk all day and lounge in a recliner watching TV at night, you may be undoing all of your hard work at the gym. Plus, there are a number of new studies that say too much sitting can be bad for our health and our waistlines—even if you exercise during the day.

Get-Results Remedy: Try to work more activity into all areas of your life by going for a walk after dinner, choosing to stand whenever possible, taking the stairs, parking your car further away and replacing your TV time for more active relaxation (like playing with your dog). Also, if your job requires you to sit in front of a computer all day, set a timer to beep every half hour or hour to remind you to stand up, stretch and do a quick lap around the office.

If you're not seeing the results you want, you may be guilty of more than one of the mistakes above. Follow these tips to feel better, have more energy and get the workout results you want and deserve!

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU GAIN...

I gained weight this week. What's going on?
When you're working hard to lose weight, a gain — whether you were expecting it or not — can be a big blow. Don't panic; all is not lost.
I gained weight this week. What's going on?Instant Problem Solver
Our Take: First off, you’re not doing anything wrong. Gaining weight is part of the journey, and just like any journey, it doesn’t necessarily follow a linear path from point A to point B. Sometimes you have to stop for gas, sometimes you get off at the wrong exit and need to loop back in order to get back on the road. Your goal is not to go straight through the process without gaining a pound, but rather to aim to lose the majority of the time. Do realize your body might not let go of weight on your schedule. Research proves weight loss is an intricate combination of many factors. So forget about gauging your progress from week-to-week and look at one-month snapshots instead. This simple change in perspective will prevent you from becoming discouraged. or worse, giving up. Stop, take a deep breath, and stay the course.

What you can do about it today

Focus on the Good Health Guidelines, not your scale.
for the next couple of days, focus on your health instead of the scale. Try to check off all the boxes.

Be your own best friend.
Remind yourself of all the healthy choices you made during the week. Speak to yourself the way you might a close friend who is troubled about something.

Look to the future.
Take a deep breath and focus your sights on next week, understanding that not allowing your efforts to be sidetracked is the most important thing. Read through some of our success stories. These people achieved their goals simply because they didn’t quit.

Happy Hour, No Regrets

No one goes to happy hour expecting quinoa and steamed tilapia. But amid the standard brown, fried fare, you may still find some good choices.
Article By: Amanda Genge
Happy Hour, No Regrets
Cheat Sheet

Can happy hour — that magical, booze-fueled time when bottomless bowls of nuts and pretzels pop up everywhere, and fried finger food reigns supreme — really be happy if you’re watching what you eat?

The answer is yes — as long as you’re willing to swap at least some of the greasy, creamy and booze-laden “happy” for healthy. “Happy hour is tough,” says WeightWatchers.com Recipes Editor and nutritionist Leslie Fink, MS RD. “It can be really hard to find foods that are lower in PointsPlus® values.” Plus drinking can cloud your judgment, making it even easier to eat more than you’d planned.

That doesn’t mean all the usual suspects are off limits, of course. You just need to eat less of them, says Fink, and round out your choices with healthier nibbles (including some you might not have even thought about ordering before). Here’s what to keep in mind before you head the bar or restaurant. (Don’t forget to check out our Cocktail Cheat Sheet for smart beverage strategies, too.)

Plan ahead. Yes, you probably saw this one coming. But it’s especially important for happy hour since many menu items are just so high in PointsPlus values. “If you know ahead of time that you’re going out, save your weekly PointsPlus Allowance for that night,” advises Fink. “Plan your budget before you go and check the menu, too, if you can. And don’t go hungry.” Also keep in mind that you’ll have a broader range of menu options if you go to a restaurant or pub for drinks instead of a bar.

Have an accountability buddy. This is a great option if you’ll be going with a friend you’re comfortable checking in with (in a subtle way, of course) and who can gently nudge you toward better options if necessary.

Don’t make it too easy to eat. Especially if there are bowls or plates of free nibbles sitting around, opt to mingle away from the food. If it’s out of sight, it’ll be out of mind, too.

Keep track of what goes in. Having visual reminders of how much you’ve consumed can be a powerful deterrent to overeating (or drinking too much). That means shooing away the wait staff when they try to take your glass or remove plates of cleaned-off chicken wing bones.

Get a fruit or veggie fix. Order a fruit plate, crudités or even salad, if they’re on the menu. If not, ask for extra celery and carrot sticks with a side of salsa for dipping.

Pick up some protein. Pretzels and chips are tasty and easy to eat, but they’re hardly filling. Shrimp cocktail is a worthwhile splurge, since it’s packed with protein for relatively few PointsPlus values (just beware of mayo-based dips). Cheese is another good choice if you watch your portion size (and avoid deep-fried mozzarella sticks). Even Buffalo chicken wings are still made out of, well, chicken. Just keep an eye on the quantity.

Do dinner instead of hors d’oeuvres. If you’re at a place with a full menu and somewhere to sit, why not opt for a healthy meal instead of appetizers? This way you can more easily limit yourself to what’s on the plate and not have to worry about overdoing it grazing on other nibbles. If portions are large, see if a friend wants to split an entrée.

Don’t deny yourself. If you have been salivating over the thought of Buffalo wings, potato skins or nachos, go ahead and have some — within reason, of course — and keep track of what you’re eating. That said, if these kinds of things are trigger foods for you, it’s probably best to steer clear altogether and focus on other options that will satisfy your craving for something salty, crunchy or savory.

Host your own happy hour. You don’t even need an excuse or occasion to round up some friends for drinks and nibbles. Of course it’s not the same as going out, but it gives you more control over the food. Check out our guide to cocktail party fare for some tasty inspiration. Cheers!

Thanks for the articles, Zo. They're kinda like a breath of fresh air. I'm trying to detoxify myself of all the bad stuff/stress going on at work and trying to get my head around the stuff that I NEED to worry about or focus on this year. I love this feeling of motivation I currently have, this feeling of wanting this year to be better, to mean more and to just blow all the other stress away with a single breath. I can't let these people get me down anymore, I just can't.

And how are YOU feeling? Getting over the sick?

It's a New Day Challenge: Week 1

Article By: Elly Trickett McNerney

Welcome to 2011! Not only is it a new year; every day is also a new day, and an opportunity to set up the great habits that will help you achieve long-term success. Dust off your resolve and climb back on the wagon with us.

With its cold weather, post-holiday anticlimax and, for many, uncomfortably snug pants, January is not the kindest month. Why, then, do so many of us also spend half the month beating ourselves up about what we ate and drank in December? Right here and now, we are officially declaring the holidays Behind Us, and instead are here to help you focus on your goals for 2011. Whether you’re new to Weight Watchers, or simply looking for a framework to help you recommit or stick to the Plan, we’ll help you succeed.

Your goal might be a sizeable one, or it might be just a few pounds away. Whichever camp you fall into, contemplating a whole year stretched ahead of you can feel overwhelming. So, instead of worrying about the next 12 months, we’re giving you a far more manageable set of activities, ideas and motivation that can make every day feel like a new day. Read the articles over the next four weeks, and head to the Community to participate in the Challenge there for a full 10 weeks.

Week 1

You have two tasks this week: Something you can do right away, and something that will help you in the long term. For both of these, we encourage you to embrace the idea that it’s a new day, and the opportunity to change the way you think about yourself and your goals.

To that end, the long-term task is to think outside the scale. Set a goal for yourself that will see you through the 10 weeks of this Challenge and beyond, that has nothing to do with the numbers on the scale or on your clothing labels. Write it down and put it somewhere you’ll see each morning. What is it that you want to feel at the end of the 10 weeks? And how do you want to build on this momentum as we go into spring and beyond?

Only you can answer these questions, but here’s some prompts for you. Think about what your decision to be healthier will do for you: Wearing clothes with confidence? Being a great role model for your kids? Accepting social invitations you might have turned down before, knowing you’ll show up feeling great? It’s a new day, and time for a new goal.

Chew something new

As for the simple task you can do right away: Try a brand-new food this week, one you’ve never tried before. Try to choose a whole food rather than a packaged one — a fruit, vegetable, protein or grain. To get ideas, check out our list of pantry staples that are a cut above the usual.

That's it for week 1; come back next week to get your next task in the It's A New Day Challenge. Good luck!

Post-Holiday Gain? 4 Ways to Recover
How to get back to your healthy habits after the holidays. Painlessly.
Article By: Erinn Bucklan

"By adding just 500 calories per day, or three homemade sugar cookies and a glass of low-fat milk, you could gain two pounds in two weeks over the holidays," says Jenna Bell-Wilson, PhD, RD, LD, a board certified specialist in sports dietetics.

Now the merriment has ended, here's how to get back on track to healthier habits in the New Year.

Don't get discouraged by weight gain
Even if you overdid it, it won't destroy your health goals. In fact, you may unconsciously reduce your intake as the holiday season winds down. "When you don't realize you're eating all those cookies, that's automatic eating," says Wendy Wood, Ph. D., professor of psychology at Duke University. But when those cocktail party invitations stop coming, so do the temptations.

Up your fruit and vegetable intake
Ideally, you should consume at least five fruit and vegetable servings per day now. These vitamin-rich foods boost your fiber and antioxidant intake and help you feel full. A tip: Replace that midafternoon 16-oz. cola (200 calories) with an orange (65 calories) as a nutritious snack.

Pre-arrange exercise time
You'll stick to a regimen if you schedule exercise ahead, says Brad Cardinal, Ph.D., associate professor of sport and exercise psychology at Oregon State University. Try to get in 30 minutes almost every day. Wear a low-cost pedometer (it counts footsteps) or sign up for a charity walk/run to stick to a plan.

Resist depriving yourself
Focus on what you're going to eat rather than what you're not. "It sounds indulgent," says Colleen Thompson, R.D., a nutritionist at the University of Connecticut. "But concentrate on ways to feed yourself now. It helps you to stick to healthy eating habits." For example, don't skip a nutritious, fiber-rich breakfast, like oatmeal or a half of a whole-wheat bagel with peanut butter. It can help prevent overeating later.
