I've been lucky that I've been able to return to ordinary life gradually after surgery. I'd had partial tears of both rotator cuffs for over 15 years, but with PT had full function and very little pain. A hiking accident on the Appalachian Trail where I caught my full weight (and the weight of my pack) on my hiking stick held in my right hand completely tore one of the muscles in the cuff. Surgery in July produced the awful pain that most of you know, and PT after that had me wondering if I'd ever get full use of my arm again. I'm nearly four months into post-surgery rehab now and I think I have full range of motion, but certainly not full strength. Picking up a cup of coffee with my arm fully extended in front of me is still a little painful, but now it is possible. Four months ago I simply could not do that. So, great progress.
In terms of PT I'm doing the exercises recommended by the therapist. Next visit in about three weeks. I'm up to three pound weights working on the rotator cuff muscles. A month ago I could handle only one pound. My posture is improving, I'm very careful not to lift anything much with the right arm, but am pretty good at getting work done with the left.
Getting better every day!
