Since the last time I had a problem, I have been very carefully doing exercises to strength it and so far so good....(fingers crossed)

I've been lucky that I've been able to return to ordinary life gradually after surgery. I'd had partial tears of both rotator cuffs for over 15 years, but with PT had full function and very little pain. A hiking accident on the Appalachian Trail where I caught my full weight (and the weight of my pack) on my hiking stick held in my right hand completely tore one of the muscles in the cuff. Surgery in July produced the awful pain that most of you know, and PT after that had me wondering if I'd ever get full use of my arm again. I'm nearly four months into post-surgery rehab now and I think I have full range of motion, but certainly not full strength. Picking up a cup of coffee with my arm fully extended in front of me is still a little painful, but now it is possible. Four months ago I simply could not do that. So, great progress.

In terms of PT I'm doing the exercises recommended by the therapist. Next visit in about three weeks. I'm up to three pound weights working on the rotator cuff muscles. A month ago I could handle only one pound. My posture is improving, I'm very careful not to lift anything much with the right arm, but am pretty good at getting work done with the left.

Getting better every day!

Hang in there. Try to do what the doctors say. It probably will be very weak if it's a repair job of a repair job...

Deborah - I don't wish having to go thru this again on anyone!! (((HUGS))) In the long run, my doc actually thinks the dog thing might have helped me. We'll see. I've still got some pain and I don't know that without the PT's supervision that I will ever get back to 100% ROM, but I can function where I am now and I guess that is all that matters. Pain pills and ice packs are still my best friend on the bad days.

Just take is very slow after your procedure! Keep us posted!

I reread this topic so that I could possibly learn something from you guys, and well I guess I did. Don't fall, don't carry to much and don't have two kids who will try and help you wash the dogs when you can't or shouldn't.

I am having my SECOND surgery on Feb. 2, because my first on failed. I am so not at all amused and have no idea how I will get thru this again.

DOH.

At least they covered the dogs in soap - like a pre-wash...

I had an Oops! Moment - just now. Turned my back on my almost 3 year old boy and my 3 1/2 year old girl. In a matter of seconds they had two of our three cocker spaniels covered in body wash. UGH! Noone home but them and me.

Bathing two dogs only 3 weeks after rotator cuff repair surgery... probably not the smartest thing I could have done. I'll call it "Advanced Challenge Physical Therapy". Pain pills and ice packs please!!

First off, 4A (nickname because I am too lazy!), congratulations on loising 160 pounds!! Wow!!

Hope you arm is better. I have been doing well but I am super caustious. My right shoulder was bothering me a little lately, which is unusual, but both are doing pretty well. I have hurt myself so many times that I finally learned to just take it slowly and not try to impress anyone--including myself!!

Oh carp. I don't think I actually re-tore anything, but Oh Heck. :-/

Today I was carrying a really heavy bag of too-big clothes to the car to drop off at the charity shop and tripped over the doorsill to the garage. Fell down and went boom. :-(

Skinned both knees and banged the elbow of my "bad" arm on the way down. (I was staggering under the load, holding it over my "good" shoulder with my "good" arm.)

Now I'm all sore and stuff. Bah.

PT tomorrow morning. We'll see how that goes. Lately he's been having me lift some pretty nice big weights, so we'll see...

Strength training is pretty out there for most average folks, so I think you qualify. LOL

Gosh, by comparison to you guys, I am a wimp!! I hurt my rotator when I get too entuhused about my strength training--or turn the wrong way....I have had problems with it for a long time, but never to the point of needing surgery, thank goodness!

You are living my old life. I have been kicked and throw 10 feet by a 2000# horse, dragged, knocked out, run over, bitten, and more. Horses are fun and I loved most of every minute of the adventure.

But I am paying for it now.

Two weeks after surgery I spent camping in the Adirondacks so I could take pictures at a kayaking festival for charity and slipped on a wet rock - and my sling didn't happen to be on. I am SO LUCKY that I didn't land on my right arm...
emoticon

Three weeks after surgery I was in a car that ran off the road into a ditch and my arm flew out of the sling. Didn't seem to be any problems with it, but it could have been a lot worse.
