I just found out that the Quad Cities Marathon is the day after AF in 2013 and QCM is my personal favorite. So, i guess Team Rose RUnners will not be coming to AF in 2013.

Well - I have been asked if I was running AF again. At the time, I said I didn't know....
Now my son is REALLY changing his mind from enlisting in the Army or Marines to AF. AND THAT IS GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ( I grew up a brat, and Dad spent a lot of time at Wright Patt, so it was a treat to run here)

So, guess I am just wondering who else is planning on going back?

Don't see how I could miss it if he is AF by then!

I have the Amphipod that you can rearrange pouches and bottles as you wish. Not sure if I will use that one or my smaller one that fits UNDER my shirt. Must have pouches for camera and pretzels and GU and iphone. May wear my skirt with a back pocket for my phone. You can stuff things in your sports bra too!

Can you tell I am thinking out loud. Starting to get a little kooky.

yeah, mine doesn't have a pouch on it... it was free from MIBM last year and saved my from a bad fall on the last loop, so I'm not complaining...

i know which fuel belt i want, just have to but it - if my phone fits in it! didn't have this phone when I last saw it....

BUT I do stuff my pockets and pouches when I have them! LOL

We are leaving Moline, IL at 7am -ish and it is an 8 hour drive to the Nutter Center (expo). We will be stopping there as soon as we arrive and then head to our hotel just down the street from there (Country Inn & Suites-Fairborn). We stayed there last year and loved the location. We will be heading to race central EARLY Saturday morning to score a sweet parking spot.

We will be going to the museum on Sunday and heading home early Monday morning. We will be wearing our medals LOL.

Hi group,

Had another bad run on Friday, starting right after mile 6. I was doing my 12 miler and ran completely out of steam after stopping to get a drink at the halfway point and had to walk the last 6 miles, very slowly. I could hardly even do that because my heart rate would not come down and I felt short of breath and woozy. I wanted to lay down for a minute because of some back pain too, but was too embarrassed! Stupid!

If anyone else ever feels like that, don't be stupid! Looking back, I should have just called 911 to make sure I wasn't having a freaking heart attack. Women don't usually present with the typical "crushing chest pain" and that back pain was not normal for me. I have an appointment with a cardiologist on Thursday to get checked. I'll have to see what he says before I can run this week.

I had a great 10 miler the week before, so I still feel strong. I'll do whatever it takes to keep running! If it turns out that I am cleared for run/walking at a much slower pace, you can bet I'll still be there on the 15th. If I can't do the half after all... I'll at least get to hear all about it in here.

SUCCESS!!!!!!!!! I was able to run a total of 5 miles this weekend. Half was on Saturday, and the other half was intervals today! Think these broken toes are healing and the tendon was nice to me!

I am so excited to get up there! Hoping to see the museum sometime - either Saturday after the marathon or Friday if we get up there early enough (doubtful).... Got to get to packet pickup after a 9 hr drive - UGH!!! But thats ok, we'll have fun during the drive! Always do!

I am watching accuweather.com like a hawk only because they go so far out with forecasts and we are trending towards rain. Right now they have the temp at 84*. It will change once again and will keep y'all posted. By the weekend I can keep track with the National Weather Service website which is much more reliable.

For new comer, if you want to drive and park on base, the distance from where you park to the starting line is well over a mile. (Just from the gate to starting line is mile) GET there early.

IF you want use the Runners ONLY shuttle, which will drop people off, at the starting line, and need ride back to your car let me know I'll have my van and my son will be driving people.
(The Runner shuttle is a one way service) (Send me a E-mail I'll give you my number)

The start times are different this year Full marathon 7:30, 1/2 marathon 8:30.

Meet ups:
Friday Exp, I'll be at the Expo from noon to about 5:00. (I'll be in and out doing setup for Hospice over at the base that day) BUT call me if you need anything.

We did group dinner last year about 7:00p at the Bob Evans hope we can do it again this year.

Race day: I'll be at the Hospice tent around 6:30a until the start

Q - Is anyone interest in AF museum Presidential and R&D Galleries ? It on base so there are limit shuttle over to it. I'll talk with the museum and pre-register people if there is interest.

Tom

Runtrilaugh - WOW you are a hard core runner! I've said this before ANY race you start and finish is GOOD race.

Things are looking up the weather is MUCH better for running this last week. I ran about half the course Sunday, see my blog. it was NICE day.

Wendy, I think once you get to Dayton you will forget about speed. Being the Military brat that you are you will enjoy the atmosphere especially as you finish. Be there!

Gump, that would make us overachievers! That first hill makes me just a little nervous since its in the beginning. Our gameplan...take it slow and reserve our energy.

I am looking forward to your blogs and will even go back to last year's as you did an awesome job with course description.

Today - 22 miles :-) Did run from Area B (AF Museum) all the way to downtown Fairborn, (that mile 9 & 10) Had great running weather it was UNBELIEVABLE, light wind, partly cloudy, temp 60-75 degree. I'm working on blog on this one, have some cool pictures of some of the course. I found this REALLY cool park that over looks, all of Area A (main part of the marathon) you can see the flight line.
(LAURIE - I decide while running that I HAD to do 22 mile, so I pushed out the 18 mile long run to match yours ;-)

Wonderwoman, DO joint the pace group its a lot of fun. Glad to hear that your not injury :-)

Little update on the course, they've repave most of the roads in Area B, (that is the first 2.5 miles of the course) which makes for some nice running. I'm planning on running from the starting line out to down town Fairborn, (about the 10 mile marker) this Sunday l'll try to do little blog on it. Weather has been NICE this week morning mid 60s.

Met my running goal for the week, goal was 50, did 52 its been a good week.

Less than month to go!!!
For those that don't know me, I live here in Dayton, and actual work on Base, so if I can help with any thing just ask.

I am on the "ankle rehab road" - lol Apparently it is not an injury (YAY!) and more of a structural issue that is being addressed through physical therapy and orthotics. I've been given the green light to run, allowing my pain to be my guide. Therefore, I'm rethinking my strategy and considering using my first two HMs in September as training runs (since my running has slacked off over the last month) and trying for the sub-2 hour HM at Air Force instead of on September 1. If I'm reading it right, it looks like a friendly course to do so and a pace group would probably help me get there. :)

First run for day 10.61 miles for the day, 39 for the week so far.

Laurie, on the course, the Full Marathon course is the same, as last year. Once you get past Wright State Unv, the course is very flat. On the back side between about 16 and 18 mile you'll be running on the actual operational runway.

Did double header today, 7.6 this morning then 8 miles this evening. I've kind of been force into double runs, because have a lot of things going on, so its my way of getting in a long run in. Shooting for 50 mile week, working on speed work mostly right now, trying to shave off about 5 minute from my marathon time, My goal again for this year's AFM is sub 4, but my last 1/2 was 1:52, I need to be at 1:45 to do sub 4. I know the numbers seem odd, but for me, the second halfs are just slower. The other thing is there are 2 long hills at the end of AFM, the one is mile plus, not real high, but after 24 miles it feels like Mt Everest.
(Plan to run that part of course this week)

Well I was little worry it was going to be really hot for AFM this year, but FINALLY, its cooled down. I've switch to early morning running, because it's still in the 90s in the evening. Morning have been in the mid 60s, which is nice.

I'll be running 1/2 this weekend in Columbus looking forward to running with bunch of people.

We are 5 weeks out now, almost there. be safe!!!

Jane, that's great. There's nothing wrong with slowing down in the heat! You still get the full benefit of the distance!

I took your advice, Catherine. Went slower and added walk breaks right from the start (like the newby Galloway person that I am). Kept the "full sentence" test in mind as well. Much better 8 miler today. I just need to go slow, I guess!

I have no idea. Weird, sharp pain in front/top of ankle appeared on a long run a couple weeks ago. I rested it, went away, ran a couple short runs fine, then it came back on my next long run. The other ankle is still in recovery mode from a fracture last fall, so I decided to play it safe and not run until I get it/them looked at. Have a podiatrist appointment this afternoon and anxious for some answers.

Haven't run in over a week due to ankle issues. It's very disheartening. I have an appointment with the podiatrist tomorrow to see what's going on and if/when I can proceed.

I ran my 20 miler Sunday and it was so easy! I ran my 14 m/m marathon long run training pace and wasn't even sore the next day. How fabulous is that???!!! Gotta love the Galloway method!

Running partner Emily will be running hers tomorrow. I wish her nothing but fun and enjoyment while she is ticking away the miles.

You can also use the "talk test" to make sure you are staying in the aerobic zone. If you can talk in complete sentences without having to stop to take a breath, your pace is OK.

Thanks for the reply! I've been using a heart-rate monitor about once a week and have figured out what my breathing should be like when I'm in the zone. I have a lot of trouble keeping it there because I've always just run at a pace I felt I could maintain, not thinking much about my heart rate, just going with a breathing pattern that I knew. I ran a marathon in '04, and that's how I ran back then. The zone idea has made me slow way down most of the time this year.

Yesterday, I thought I could shift gears a little bit... that the music might make my long run more enjoyable. It was hot, but not as hot as it has been lately. I was initially running to the music, but decided that wasn't something I should do with every song, so I just ran-- more at the pace I used to run. My legs felt fine. My hips, knees and feet felt fine. I didn't think I was close to my max heart rate until the last hill at the 6 mile mark. It was pretty steep and I just wanted to run it, then I planned to slow way down for the last couple of miles. I made it up, but at the top I had to walk to catch my breath, but my breathing didn't ease up. I felt like I was still running it. That was the weird part.

I yanked out my ear-buds and pulled off the arm band with my i-pod and just tried to slow everything way down. It was extremely sunny... blindingly sunny coming out of the woods and I just could not catch my breath. I just walked the rest of the way. I was so glad to see my car! I opened up the back and sat back there with my feet up for a few minutes while I drank some water. I made sure I was breathing better before I drove home.

Once back home, I had to lay on the floor with my feet up for a few minutes before I felt like I could lay flat. Felt sick to my stomach for a few hours.

I think you're right. I should never even think about running at my regular pace for my long run. The music idea was for the wrong run. It should have maybe been for a day I just ran a flat, easy 3 miles or something.

I'm still going to keep trying. I'll make sure to use my HR monitor on my long runs and keep things less... exciting.

Thanks again for your reply. I was feeling like I really screwed up.

The problem with listening to music as you run is that it is hard not to run to match the beat. You were probably just going too fast. Was it also hot?

You should never be running at your max heart rate for a long run. If you have recovered just fine, I don't know that you need to cut back distance. Slow the pace down.

How do you monitor your pace as you run?

Hooo boy. I'm discouraged. I tried listening to music on my i-pod during my run today (for the first time) and have to say it will be the last time. I wasn't able to pay enough attention to my breathing and heart rate with the music, just running along like everything was great... until I hit the 6 mile mark. Then I started getting short of breath and had to walk, but was still short of breath. My heart rate wouldn't come down and I started to feel sick. I made it back to my car, got home and laid down on the couch for about an hour before I felt like I could get up and move. I ate some tortilla chips and felt a little better. I had eaten a peanut butter sandwich 2 hours before I ran and never felt thirsty, so I know I was well hydrated and had plenty of carbs and protein for the distance. I got online and read about exercise induced nausea and I think I spent too long at my max heart rate. I need to carefully focus on slow, steady distance. I feel fine tonight. If it happens again, I'll probably see the doc.

I thought I was on track. This will set me back to 6 miles for next week's long run.

Got stuck in a severe thunderstorm on my Tuesday run. I checked the weather and it looked like I had about 3 hours before the bad weather was scheduled to hit. I only planned to run 6 miles on the bike trail, so I thought I'd be fine! After about 4 miles I saw the storm clouds building, but just enjoyed the amazing view over the farms thinking I still had enough time. Then a women who had just passed me on her bike reappeared and told me her son called to say we were under a severe thunderstorm warning and it would hit in less than 20 minutes! I tried to blast my last 2 miles, but I still got caught in the lightening, thunder, and torrential rain. To top it off, once I got in my car the alarm started going off! I guess my key was soaked and it triggered the alarm. It took me about a full minute to figure out how to turn the dang thing off.
emoticon
Good news is, I had a great workout! lol. And we really needed the rain. Today, I go 8 miles. Next week, my long run should be 12! So far so good for my half-marathon plan.
Good luck with your training, everyone!!

This has been rought year for training, with the heat, did long run Sunday, 95 degrees for the last 10 miles, and YES I did some walking on that run. Today not much better, start out it was 85 ended 98. I would like tell everyone it is cool in Sept here in Dayton, but I think this may be a Hot one. The other thing to remember is there is not a lot of cover for the last 3 to 4 miles of the AFM. The very last section of the marathon is on the old runway, that get really hot, if the Sun is out. (To people in Texas I don't know how you train in the summer)

The last two years the weather has been nice, last was PERFECT, started out in mid 50, end in the mid 60, the wind was not bad. 2010, it was little hotter about 75 by noon time, light wind.

I'm working on getting information on Hotels around the base if people are interest.
I've worked out plan for transportation this year, where if you are a runner and want to park at the Exp. I can get people back to their car. (Kind messed that up last year) . I'm putting a pak together with general informatiion, like I did last year.

I'll be switch my training to the base starting in August, I start posting picture, here on this teams Page for people.

Wonder what the temps will be for our run..... Sept is not that far away and this heat..... ugh!

Training for me has not been what I wanted it to be, but there is still time!

Can't wait to see everyone! We're hoping to get up there fairly early Friday afternoon and hit the expo. :)

Planning on getting in a 12 miler today. Training for the half. Well, that will (hopefully) be my third of four halfs in September; so just training for the endurance to run that many injury-free.

This morning's long run will be epic for me and DIL Emily as we are running our longest distance ever...17 miles. It is 4:45am and we are eating breakfast and will be heading out in just a bit. Nervous but ready!

I've been training for the half and did 10 miles on Friday (my long run day). I've been using my heart rate monitor and trying to keep my pulse between 60 and 70% of my max, which has been really eye-opening. I realize I've always pushed and pushed to run way too fast to develop true endurance (where you burn fat for fuel instead of glycogen). Running that 10 miles at the new slower pace, I finished feeling like I could still sprint the last quarter mile, if I'd let myself. I had to hold back, telling myself I would prevent injury and finish strong if I kept to the plan! I'm hoping to do a couple of 12 milers before September.
I love reading about all you marathoners! Good luck!!

My preparation for CHEERING is going very well!

Pain is temporary. It may last a minute, or an hour, or a day, or a year, but eventually it will subside and something else will take its place. If I quit, however, it lasts forever.

I am in week 6 of my training and so far...knock on wood...it's going well. Emily and I have a 17 miler coming up EARLY Sunday morning and hopefully it will go as well as our last one did. We are now in new distances so Saturday night sleeping every other weekend is non-existent which is normal for us.

Another aspect of our Air Force marathon training is our fundraising for Team Fisher House. We will be kickng that into full gear about now. Hubby Jim, me, Emily and son Matt is known as Team Rose Runners since our last name is Rose. Get it?

I just ran the Missoula Marathon last Sunday (7/8), so I think it's going pretty well.

OK we are now 8 weeks out, at this point the long runs should be 70 to 80% of race you will be running. This has not been easies summer in terms of weather it has been HOT. Please be care with the long runs. For myself, I starting my runs early in morning, to try to beat the heat.
For new comers to AFM, the course is for the most part flat, really good marathon for first timers. So the big question is how is it going!!!
