I did not have sex ed in school. We are cCatholics fro crying out loud! LOL

My mother was opened to any and all questions. When she could not answer me anymore (I was 10 yo) she bought me a "sexual education collection" and I read the 5 books over and over.

I think my friends and I were fortunate in our parents, and their willingness to clearly answer any question we asked frankly and without undue embarrassment. I knew what homosexuality was at a fairly young age..I asked my Mom..she told me. Sex Ed in school was gender separated, but fairly comprehensive. We were at least told that condoms existed, etc. Not as comprehensive as it is today..my daughter is also an RN, teaches it in a mixed health class and it covers far more than we were taught in school. Ignorance isn't bliss, it's dangerous.

We got the whole sex ed thing in HS health class. I do remember it was one of the old granny PE teachers so, I don't remember it being very detailed. The genders were separated. Don't remember learning about gay and lesbian issues at all.
We watched some 1970's era film with this girl "Phobe", about teen pregnancy. Can't find it anywhere but I found these...........

There are scores of films like these on youtube.

OMG This one purports to be Education on "Homosexuals" It's HORRIBLE! They twisted
the meanings of homosexual with sexual predator.

Val you're definetly right. This old ex Victorian is definetly for sex ed.Can you imagine my embaressment when I was 55 and asked if I would give a lecture about veneral diseases at a shelter for the homeless? Even then I had to say NO.Can't discuss sex even today with members of the opposite sex except doctors and nurses.I'd probably have to be hypnotized to get past that hang up.I can do it on the puter as I can't see you all face to face.Something raunchy comes on a movie on TV and my SIL is in the room I either leave or fast forward the movie.Unbelievable in this day and age but still true with me. emoticon

Sex Ed in Texas while I was growing up was a minute part of our Health class. It was more a lesson in plumbing with boys and girls seperated and taught about their own "plumbing."

Feelings of emotional love and physical lust were never discussed. Peer pressure? Nope.
Birth Control? Nope. Sexually transmitted disease? Not until highschool, when we thought ourselves invinvcible.

"Sex" was learned in tree houses and doll houses with the neighbor kids. It was only then that you learned about the opposite sex and "their" plumbing.

If we had been taught the psychology and the physiology of sex whether heterosexual or homosexual I believe there would have been less sexual abuse, drug abuse, suicides and divorce in our generation.

It may not have been relevant to nursing but none the less they taught it in IN.only 43 years ago. When I was married I had no idea what homosexual people did.I asked my HB at age 25.I wouldn't believe him at first.Actually accused him of lying to me.Took him several minutes to convince me.Sex ed was not even taught in IN.until my oldest son was 14 and we had to sign for permission. We were relieved believe it or not my retired Army HB was nervous about discussing sex even with boys.We had both been raised with Victorian morals,My son when he was asked questions about the subject by his daughters answered them in a way they would clearly understand. He definetly broke that mold. and his wife agreed and did the same thing. They were right.

If truth be known she probably feels sorry she did now but some things are hard to admit.
--------
If she feels any shame or regret at all, I guarantee, it's not for her attitude - it's only for the fact that she got caught on tape.

People like that don't learn tolerance, they only learn discretion.

By college age in CA none of us were taking, or in need of sex education classes which is the only area where a discussion of homosexually might have legitimate place. Boiled down, it simply wasn't relevant to our nursing studies.

Tried to answer and lost the whole thing.I went to school in IN.and they taught a little of everything as we didn't know what field we might finally chose.Diffirent states may have taught diffirently.Your right about gays being in the closet in Sullivan. Most still are.I know at this date 2 in their 50's and 2 in their 30's.If any are my age they're still hiding. There is no race prejudice at all but sex.I guess a whole lot..I never even thought about it before now.I do remember maybe 50 years ago an article in the Reader's Digest that said it was learned behavior. So the teaching was around for a while.I am sorry the woman started all the trouble but she probably still belives it.If truth be known she probably feels sorry she did now but some things are hard to admit..Have a great day!

Shirley, since I am almost iin your age group, I have to chime in..I think perhaps the accurate way to state things is not that we didn't know any gays..only that we didn't know we were acquainted with any. People were firmly in the closet and sometimes spent their whole lives there, often even married to someone of the opposite sex and passing for straight. Back then we simply wouldn't have known, regardless of how well we thought we knew them. Oddly, I was not taught anything in nursing school one way or the other about whether homosexuality was nature or nurture. there was no reason for my training to address it..it wasn't an illness. I graduated in 1976, in CA..

OK,now I am going to open a can of worms.I am embarassed to say that I spent most of my life in the town that is having all of this ruckus.I think of course anyone I repeat anyonw who is a junior or senior should be allowed to go to the prom.Always have been able to even there.Until I guess thisa year.I am not certain why suddenly all of this.I never knew a gay person until I was at least 50.The ones I presonally knew were 3 nurses. One male and 2 female. All but one woman swung both ways. Two became friends on the internet who were not in the medical profession. My SIL has two brothers who are gay but one has now given up all sex and dedicated his life to Christ only.I like them both.Regards the fact that sexual orientation was learned behavior I was taught that in nurse's school. At that time psychiatrists believed that and some gay men and women willingly commited themselves to mental instituations to be cured. It may not be true but myself older doctors and nurses were taught that.Perhaps this woman was taught the same thing. Not saying she should have caused this ruckus but she may personally believe it.Over half of folks my age maybe more have been taught this and if you don't believe people were taught that the old medical books have to be still floating around somewhere. Most but not all churches believe that too. Most I attend never even mention the subject.Afraid of offending someone.I try my best to show love and caring to all.Peeace!!! emoticon and this group.

What I think is that the haters find it easier to seek out others to look down upon than to face their own flaws and fears and deal with those.

I have been reading a lot about this on the news. It is shoking for me that in America people can be so comfortable discriminating people, and they don't even learn with History, they just jump to another group to discriminate.

Like most of her ilk, she uses her arguments unequally. It's the only way to contort the facts to conform with her beliefs.

She should not be a teacher.

Diana Medley is a special education teacher in town. She doesn't believe anyone is born gay.

"I believe that it was life circumstances and they chose to be that way; God created everyone equal," said Medley.

"Homosexual students come to me with their problems, and I don't agree with them, but I care about them. It's the same thing with my special needs kids, I think God puts everyone in our lives for a reason," said Madley.

"'So the same goes for gays? Do you think they have a purpose in life?' No I honestly don't. Sorry, but I don't. I don't understand it. A gay person isn't going to come up and make some change unless it's to realize that it was a choice and they're choosing God," said Medley.

Yup, this is a teacher. Someone whose job is to help shape the minds of young people.
