Sounds like a fascinating trip. Indian is frequent fare locally..authentic, as we have friends and family from south asia. The meat in your curry (curry being pretty literally gravy, not the spice that can be used in it) could also have been lamb or goat. Those two are fairly common. You can only assume something is vegetarian if the household is Hindu.

It sounds like a memorable trip! India's most definitely on my travel wish list.

I shall stay the way I am because I do not give a damn.

It really is a different world. I wasn't expecting it to be so very different. I thought my previous experiences in countries like Costa Rica and Mexico would have prepared me, but they didn't.

I can see how the people almost have to ignore the extreme poverty. You just wouldn't be able to take it, there's so much, if you didn't harden yourself to it, it would destroy you to see it every day.

There are people trying to do something about it, but there is also the caste system to consider. While caste-based discrimination was outlawed in the 1950s, many Indians still proudly believe in the castes. On the surface, there are a lot of initiatives to try and help the Dalits, or "untouchables" but even then there is no way to raise them out of their caste. You can send an untouchable to law school, but then he's just an untouchable lawyer, not a Brahmin. It's getting better, but slowly.

That sounds incredible!!

I had some coworkers go to India a year or so ago for a work trip (Through Mumbai, I think) and the one hadn't ever been outside the US (besides Canada, which is 20 minutes from us) and they were in some poor areas, I think it really opened her eyes to what real poverty is. Just saddens me that people can live that way and no one cares! (well, no one in their near vicinity).

Glad you had a wonderful time though!!!

Oh, and one more highlight. We stayed in the Mahrajah's palace in Mandawa. Half of it was converted to a hotel, but his residence is the other half. He lives in Jaipur most of the time, but since the election was going on while we were there, he was in residence.

How cool is that? We stayed in a castle with actual Indian royalty!

India was incredible.

It was hot and crowded.

I don't know how many times I used the sentence "I don't know what I was expecting, but it wasn't that."

I ate a lot of things I could barely identify. One night, I get this bowl of stew that I assumed would be vegetarian. And I found this hunk of beef in it. Only, it's illegal to kill a cow there, so it couldn't have been. It wasn't chicken. I tried to ask the waiter what was in the stew, but he didn't understand enough English to tell me. Come to find out later it was probably water buffalo.

Seriously. I ate water buffalo. How cool is that?

It was good. Not as stringy as I would have expected. Must be down to the way they cooked it.

The Mughal architecture was incredible. It was all done on such a grand scale, and so precise, in a day before modern engineering techniques and mesurements, everything lines up just so. Amazing what you can do with enough time and labor at your disposal and no TV to distract you. :)

We had a dedicated driver the whole time, and he made the trip for us. We ended up tipping him 2000 Rupees + $20 (We ran out of Rupees on the last day.) Later, I found out his monthly salary is probably about 1800 INR (About $30). We tipped him more than a month and a half pay. He was totally worth it.

I still can't wrap my head around that, though. The tour company pays him $30 a month. He drove us all over the Golden Triangle area. He had to be there to pick us up before sunrise on the 15th when we saw the Taj Mahal. He had to drive us to the airport at 11:00pm the last day, after picking us up at out hotel at 8:00 am that morning to drive us to Delhi from Mandawa. He washed the car inside and out every night. We weren't terribly demanding, but just his basic duties were more than a full day's work for seven days straight, and for that, he makes less in a month than I make in half an hour of work.

We stayed in 5-star hotels the whole way. Most of them were on the outskirts of town, more like resorts than just hotels, but in Jaipur, the hotel was right in the middle of the urban center. From the roof of our luxury hotel, we could see a shanty town, and a family living in a shack on the grounds of a cemetary. The divide between rich and poor in that place is so stark, and yet they are in such close proximity.

It was a real eye-opener for a middle-class American like me. We have disadvantaged people in the US, but even our homeless are not as poor as the poorest people in India. The man with whithered legs, crawling over to our car on his knucles to beg for us to just give him 10 Rupees for a meal. I wanted to help them all, but you can't. Even if you do help the one you see, a dozen more suddenly materialize out of nowhere, pawing at you and demanding more and more.

I don't know how an introvert survives in a place like that. Just riding through the streets in our car with the noise and crowds and color and activity exhausted me. I lost it once - only once. I was shopping and I was arguing over the price of a sari with this vendor, and he and his friend kept getting in my face. I would turn around, and there would be someone else pressing up against me, and I just burst into tears.

I never got that sari, either.

Anyway, it was the experience of a lifetime. I'm so glad I did it. Someday, I might even like to do back, knowing what I know now. But not soon. I think the next adventure will involve a little less adventure and a little more relaxation.

Wow, is it dead around here or what?

Anyway, I'm back. I've got the most monstrous case of jet lag ever. I fell asleep yesterday afternoon for about four hours, and then haven't been able to get back to sleep since. It's 8:15 am here, and my body is about 80% convinced it's bed time.

So, I'm leaving in three days.

I'm no longer giddy about the anticipation of the trip. I just want to see the love of my life.

It's hard enough being separated from him with Skype and Facebook and all the supporting technology that keeps us close. I can't imagine how hard it had to be for couples to be apart in years past when none of this existed.

Visa came through. I'm officially allowed into India.

Flights are booked. I'm finalizing the tour arrangements. For the trip to Europe, I made all my own arrangements, but since I don't know a thing about India, we're going through a tour company. 3 nights in New Delhi, 1 in Agra, 2 in Jaipur, 1 in Mandawa - wherever THAT is.

The only bad part of this is that I'm going to be SERIOUSLY missing my husband. He leaves March 11, and I won't see him (in person) until we meet up in New Delhi on April 12. In 14 years, we have never been apart for more than a couple of nights. Luckily, we have Skype and Facetime and he will have internet while he's there.

My parents retired last year "to spend more time with the grandkids." I'm not sure they meant for that to be taking care of the kids while Jon and I literally went to the other side of the world, but that's what's happening.

Got my jabs.

My Visa application is in the mail. Hopefully it will be rubber-stamped and back on its way to me within the next couple of weeks and I can make my final arrangements.

If all goes well, we will be celebrating our 14th wedding anniversary with a sunrise tour of The Taj Mahal - the world's greatest monument to love.

I really like it. I think it keeps me motivated. Its basically a fancy pedometer. My husband bought it for me at Christmas, he thought it had a HRM too, but it doesn't.

But it really translates to SP nicely. I love that!

Nice to see you too!!

Hey nerds! Long time no see! I thought I would stop in and see how you all have been doing. I haven't been on the boards on SP in a million years. I thought that I like Myfitnesspal better, but Sparkpeople apparently knows how to sync perfectly with my fitbit. (which I really like BTW)

Plus I missed some of your faces. :) Hope everyone is doing well!!

I'M GOING TO INDIA!

My husband is running a month-long training class in Pune, which is about 2 hours SE of Mumbai. At the end of his training class, his company is willing to give him an extra week. All I have to do is pay my own airfare, and I can join him for that week.

JAI-HO!

I have to get a Visa. I have to get shots. I have to get someone to watch the kids and the dog. So much to do...

Well, it sure is quiet around here.

Me, I tried to dye my hair red for a costume party on Saturday.

It went horribly, hilariously wrong.

The color was too purple to begin with, and then, parts of my hair just sloughed it off like nothing ever happened. AND it seems to have bleached some of the parts before it came off.

I went from a fairly uniform light brown to stripey, splotchy brown, blonde, magenta and pink. It's like I'm a cake frosted by a 4-year-old.

Seriously - there will be a lot of hats and up-dos in my future.

Just plugging my new blog:
www.badfoodie.com/
We have several food reviewers with advice on recipes and restaurants. My feature will be called "Bad Foodie Cooking School" which will feature a no-fail recipe, and cooking tips on techniques ranging from the most basic to the extremely complex.

My first lesson on glazed salmon went up a couple of weeks ago, and a recipe review for cooking with your kids went up Saturday.

Future cooking school lessons will include homemade marshmallows, roasting a chicken, and tips for getting that Thanksgiving meal on the table.

Check it out, if you would, and tell your friends, please. At this time, we're not doing it for money. We don't even have ads. It's just a labor of love for a little group of foodies.

A bit of good news:

I just signed a contract for my first professional publication. My short story "Three is a Sacred Number" will be appearing in Daily Science Fiction. When I know the exact date, I will share.

Stay safe Myrea..the fires also damage the earth's ability to hold water, by destroying trees and vegetation..a long time problem in California, leading to erosion and other issues. so sorry your State is dealing with fires and floods..best luck, Girl!

Right now, I'm far more distracted by my state being washed away by rain.

Climate change myth my a$$!

First come the fires - year after year of forest fires and wildfires. Dry trees burn faster and hotter. Hotter, bigger fires damage the soil so it can't absorb rainfall. All it takes is one big storm and you're looking at this:
www.9news.com/news/article/354908/18
8/
Evacuations-ordered-after-flash-flooR>ds-spread-across-Colo

But hey, it's not worth our time to even look at reducing our carbon emissions. A hotter planet is good for everyone, right?

If anyone says climate change isn't real today, I'm not going to be held responsible for my actions.

Our presence and our missiles hit children along with the elderly, adult civilians, the military and insurgents. They are equal opportunity missiles and life is usually not improved for the average citizen when there is war..here, there or anywhere.

Ok..syria. We will doubtless invade, then subsidize cuz that is what we do. Not sure who it benefits, but trust me, someone gets rich over it. I think we have a huge military, and a fortune invested in it, and have created a war machine that will engage anyone we decide to engage at any time to justify the investment. It wouldn't be cost effective otherwise. Do I buy all the humanitarian excuses? Not really..not any more. Do we have the full skinny on the matter/ Puhleese..of course we do not.

Well, I'm glad you all had confidence in me. The judges did not. Once again, Myrea sits on the sidelines and watches other writers get the glory.

After crying my eyes out, I swore off writing forever. If the best I can possibly do isn't good enough, then why keep trying?

Then, I had a long conversation with Captain Morgan, and dove face first into a plate of Red Robin burgers and fries. I came out of it with a little more perspective, 4 lbs water weight gain and a bit of a hangover.

Five entries met the judge's criteria better than mine. I know a guy who has made the finals every single year in this contest and has never won, nor never gotten a book published. He is very good at being what the local judges want. I, apparently, am not. Oh, well. That doesn't make mine bad. It's just time to polish and send it out to real publishers instead of counting on this contest to give me my boost.

The reason this matters so much? The local judges narrow the field of 200 or so entries down to the top 5 finalists in each of 6 categories.

Those finalists will then go to an agent or editor in the genre for final selection.

It's not winning the final prize I care about as much as making the finals. The final judge for Scfi/Fantasy is David Pomero from Amazon's 47North imprint.
www.apub.com/editors

A guaranteed read-through by an actual editor is more than sufficient incentive.

I entered the contest before and scored high, but not in the top 5.

I need a serious chill pill.

Or a drink. Or five.

I entered my novel in a contest in May. Finalists are supposed to be announced in "Mid-August."

*Looks at calendar.
*Sees Aug 14.
*Tries to tell self not to even think about freaking out until the 15th.
*Fails.

ARGH! The 14th is middle-ish. WHY IS THERE NO NEWS!

What trip!

We traveled by plane, car, bus, subway and boat. We ate fois gras, and had a pint and chips at the pub; saw the crown jewels and met some Travelers (Irish gypsies); had a home cooked dinner with a lovely British family and got insulted by a Parisian cab driver; experienced Druidic rituals at Stonehenge at sunset on the summer solstice and stood beneath the grandure of Notre Dame while a choir sang hymns in Latin.

I still have four different kinds of currency in my wallet.

I can now adequately compare the public transportation systems of Denver, London and Paris and say that the London Tube gets the slight edge over the Paris Metro, primarily due to cleanliness, and that Denver isn't even in the running.

Iceland has no trees. London is further north than Winnipeg or Toronto. It gets dark late and the sun comes up early this time of year. Paris is on a later time zone than London, but only a few miles east of the city, so the time gets all funky there.

We didn't get to do and see everything I wanted. We missed the changing of the guards at Buckingham Palace because we saved it for the last day and it was cancelled due to weather. We didn't go to the top of the Eiffel Tower because the workers went on strike that day. We tried to do the ride to the top of The Shard, but we couldn't find the darn thing. You can't go anywhere in downtown London without seeing it. The stupid building towers over the whole scene, but actually getting there is another story. We didn't get to see Paris lit up as "The City of Lights" because we were so exhausted we couldn't stay out until the 10:00 pm sunset.

I can't believe it's over. My body is still a little bit on London time. I woke up at 3:00 am, wide awake and ready to go. I'm physically exhausted. I probably walked more in the last two weeks than in the previous two years put together. My feet are sore, my legs are tired, and I had the time of my life.

My son blossomed. It was so wonderful. The first night in Paris, my husband and I collapsed into bed at about 7:00 and fell asleep. Alaric woke up hungry, so he walked out into the Paris streets alone, found a cafe and bought dinner. The boy doesn't speak a word of French, but he braved Paris alone to get a pizza.

It was really quite extraordinary in every way.

Well, international travel is kind of kicking my butt.

Sat, 5:00 am Denver time - got up, cleaned the house, packed.
Sat, 5:10 pm Denver time - took off from DIA. Got a couple little cat naps on the plane, but didn't really sleep.
Sun, 6:00 am local time (midnight in Denver) landed in Reykjavik, Iceland. Sat for two hours in the Iceland airport.
Sun, 8:30 am local time (2:30 am in Denver), went to The Blue Lagoon hot springs. Soaked for a couple of hours, ate Icelandic food. Good stuff.
Sun, 4:10 pm local time (10:10 am in Denver), took off from Reykjavik.
Sun 8:10 pm local time (1:10 pm in Denver) landed at London Heathrow.
Sun, 10:00 pm local time (3:00 pm in Denver) arrived at flat
Sun, 11:00 pm local time (4:00 pm in Denver) Skyped with younger son back in Colorado with the grandparents. Ate a curry.
Mon, 12:00 am local time (5:00 pm in Denver) after having been awake for 36 hours straight, FINALLY, collapsed into bed.

I still haven't fully recovered.

Myrea, your son's success made this Mom cry happy tears..thank you for sharing it. It's wonderful to see a friend's beautiful boy win on so many levels. I understand the frustration first hand, and the anger, and the pain. The system fails our children, but it's an affirmation when some succeed despite the system and the odds. He sure had the right Mama Bear in his corner. You well deserve the spark acknowledgement..it was a beautifully written blog entry and got right to the heart of things.

You hit a nerve Myrea.

Some people go through life blissfully unaware of the struggles of others. The things they take for granted are the hard won victories of you and others who don't take the first perception of a disability as a reason to give up. Every person has an untapped potential. The professionals who are charged with with seeing that potential realized are often at best, well meaning clods and at worst, inept failures who minimize the positive and project their own failings on to others.

The too few that encourage the best outcome are beaten down by a system that promotes the path of least resistance. It is worth every battle to see your child's success despite all odds.

Woah!

My blog about my son - "Never" - has been selected as one of Spark's "Featured Member Blog Posts."

I'm completely flabbergasted. When I wrote it, I was hopeful that you guys and maybe a couple of others would read it. I never expected more than that.

I've got 62 comments so far and I won a "Featured Blog Post" trophy from Spark.

Simply astounding. I never thought that what I considered a simple rant about how people dismissed my son over the years to catch on with so many people.

That fact that taxes are due is enough of an April Fools joke for me.
----------
April 15 is my wedding anniversary. Thirteen years this Monday.

I always make a point to have the taxes done well before the 15th so it never gets in the way of celebrating. The one year I put filing off until the last minute, I forgot about our anniversary and my husband was very hurt.

He got me the new "Tomb Raider" for XBox. I got him "Injustice: Gods Among Us."

So romantic. We know each other so well.

We got a good foot of snow on Saturday, and it's been cold enough that we've still got several inches on the grass in most places.

That's good though. The water district just came out with this years's rules, and we can't start outside watering until April 15. Even then, we can only water between 6:00pm and 10:00 am two days a week.

The kids are growing up a bit. It might be time to consider at least partially xeriscaping our yard.
