emoticon Janis! I actually have a prescription strength arthritis medication due to my back injury so I take it each day. All of your other suggestions are terrific!! I do the hand washing and sanitizing.... but the door thing..... well either DH opens the door (he's one of the old fashioned kind of men) or I grab the handle in the same place everyone else does.... I didn't even think..... I mean if I have on long sleeves I pull them down to open the door but that transfers the germs to the garment! The pen thing is genius!! I'm also a real fiend when it comes to cleaning my hands after handling money..... the places people put money..... yikes! I'm not germaphobic but I've become very aware of where germs like to hang out and very conscious of cleaning my hands these last months!

Jeanne, hope you get help to feel better soon. In the meantime, my rheumatologist recommends Naproxen (Aleve) twice a day as the best OTC pain/anti-inflammatory. If you take it twice a day for a week it works better and better. You don't want to take it very long term, but until you can get diagnosed and proper treatment started. Ice and/or heat are big helps too.

With my RA and the med for it I can get infections easily that are harder to shake than normal, then my asthma gets flared up, so here are some of my tips to avoid getting sick:
- avoid sick people
- drink lots of water
- eat berries, nuts, flax, greens, colorful veggies, fruits, fish
- never use the pens at check-outs, only my own pen
- don't touch the same part of a public door or door handle that others do, go higher or lower
- use knuckles or back of hand, not fingers to push elevator buttons, etc.
- hold shopping carts by sides, not the handles
- use hand sanitizer after leaving a store or gathering
- wash hands well and often
- get plenty of rest at night, nap if I feel extra tired

Have a great Thursday Team!

Deb - Thanks for thinking of me and solutions! Yes I am allergic to mold so we keep on top of things there. It causes cold like symptoms but it doesn't make my tendons, joints and muscle hurt and spasm and lock and so forth.

That is all due to my compromised immune system. In order to help that we have to first find out what is causing it to be compromised. Until then I just have to try and stay away from people that I KNOW are sick. I refuse to live in a bubble though so I use hand sanitizer and so forth when we go out. (You know after you put your hands on a cart that other people have handled and so forth.) I am just frustrated because I want to be DOING and I'm stuck kind of taking it easy due to lung difficulties. It's the first of the year and everyone is posting their new goals and how they're doing on them and I'm sitting here waiting on the medical community to give me answers that I need in order to improve my situation. I'm not the only one with medical problems though so I've been lecturing myself about the getting frustrated thing and so forth.

If the lung thing would clear up I could figure out how to work out around the other symptoms. The pain is bad but on the whole exercise would more than likely make me feel better. It's the fact that I can hardly breathe when I start moving that has me stalled out here.

The good thing is that I've had a lot of time to figure out how to work around and through the pain and I'm working on the healthy eating so I'm not just spinning my wheels no matter that it seems that way. I've also had some time to go through and read some very inspiring blogs and to understand that even with severe medical problems you CAN get in shape. It's all in your state of mind. So I'm working on my state of mind too!

I got my workout chair all cleaned off and my DVD's located and all that jazz so that when my lungs clear up and can "hop to it" and get a short chair routine in! I have also broken DH (mostly) of putting things ON my workout chair! LOL! I figure if I don't have to clean it off first I might actually have the energy left to do the routine!

Have you thought about having your heating and AC units and ducts cleaned and sterilized? I have severe allergies and they have suggested a room air purifier to remove all the pollen and contaminates. I am also highly sensitive to mold and mildew and get terrible sinus infections when they are present. Didn't know it until they tested me and we came home and did a complete check of the house, closets, floors, and the attic. Found that the closet in our room had a leak from in the attic and there was mold and mildew in there that we had no clue was there. I got better after it was all cleanned out.
Just a thought.....
I hope you feel better soon emoticon

Felt better for two days ...... now both DH and I have got some random bug! Grrrrrrrrr!!! I'm getting to the point where I'm flat out angry about it! I don't know if that's better than being sad about it or not. Neither emotion gets me anywhere. It'll be the 1st before I can see the specialist who can hopefully tell my WHY my immune system is compromised. He is good, therefore he is busy. Feb 1st was the soonest I could get in and I booked in Dec of last year!

Oy, the puppy is getting all grown up! He is still teething but I believe he has hit his size potential. He's got a pot belly but he had that from the moment I got him. He is my little friend who loves me no matter what! He can put a smile on my face when I'm in the worst of moods! Thank goodness he's a cuddle bug because "Mom" has been too sick to play tug or fetch with him! He's happy to just sit with me and be by me and get some puppy love petting in!

Deb - Wow hon I'm sorry! I kinda know what you're going through. I helped my daughter through both her pregnancies with gestational diabetes. She was living with me through one of them so I actually made her meals and helped her track her sugars. It's a LOT of work and you must always pay attention to how you're feeling right?? And if you feel "off" you have to take a blood sugar??

Lou - I do hope you find the time to read that blog. It's really inspiring! But in short..... remember the beautiful things about yourself!

I finally got some sleep without coughing. Granted it was this morning from 5:30 to 11:45 but man oh man did it feel GOOD!! I am without a doubt more bright-eyed and bushy-tailed than I've been in the last couple of weeks!

Have a great Monday all!

I had a bad day yesterday.
Mainly because I failed to post anything, good or bad, in my journal. The scales this morning proved my fears....

I couldn't sleep because I had really BAD things..... I am a diabetic on medications and STILL I had dessert at church after a modest meal of LASAGNA & GARLIC TOAST!
It wasn't pretty and the roller coaster just kept climbing from there. So around 2:30am I woke to make a trip to the bathroom, felt a little strange (wander why?), and decided to take my blood sugar..... 102 not good, not to bad, but better than I deserved.

So all morning I fought the sleep monster.... and I didn't put up much of a fight. 11 am I finally roused myself for a small breakfast, a normal breakfast, and WALLA (poof), I'm wide awake. Guess I should have taken a quick look at my fasting blood count again. I am really dropping the ball right now!

Back to the basics and out of the pot hole I fell into from the highest point of the ride!

Hi all! Hope everyone had a great weekend. I helped DH hang a TV mount and then helped him mount the TV on the thing on Saturday! My arms are still sore from it but I managed to do it!!

Hi all! I turned a corner in my illness last night and have it on the run! I was really icky from about 12 - 10 and then it felt like it just went poof - gone! I'm still a bit weak of course and I'll be taking all due precautions not to expose myself to any more illnesses right now but wow! - what a difference a few hours can make!

Thank you all for supporting me while I was so sick! Now to heal totally and get on with my goals for 2017!!!

Jeanne-Thank you for the warm welcome here! It's so wonderful having a supportive spouse to help you along the way. My DH is the same--just a few pounds to lose and he will be good as new. But he sticks to every single thing I do, and cheers me on along the way. So glad you have that same support in your life.

Janel-Glad to have another newbie here with me! Everyone has been so welcoming here though.

It's great to be here. It's nice to be active with spark again. I have been on here nearly 5 years, but just about the time I would get really active with it, something else in life would take over. I'm finally at a place that it shouldn't happen that way anymore. My husband, Justin is ultra supportive to me. We have a 3 year old son, Clark who is our main motivator. He's so healthy, vibrant, and full of life--we want to share in that with him by becoming healthier.

Hope you all have a wonderful day! If I haven't talked with you yet, I look forward to doing so! emoticon

Jeanne ..... That happened to me as well in the past. When the mail goes quite, I start checking connections. I think it so great that you have the support team like mine. I am very happy that others do as well..... Try to stay warm and dry lady..... we want you well!

Janel ..... It sounds like several of us are in the same stages of life. I am 55, been married to the same crazy man for 38 years, 3 grown daughters, 1 grown son (ages 37 - 31), 9 natural grandchildren, 6 step grandchildren (all ages 23 - 6), and 7 great grandchildren (ages 9 - 6months).......

Lou ..... I hope you stay warm!

Deb - Would you believe SP messed up my email and I haven't been getting posts from the team!! I wouldn't leave this team for the world. Too much great advice here!

Janel - Welcome to the team! I am at the same point in my life as you..... 48 this year, Married to love of life for 30 years.... Only one grown daughter... One grown step-daughter. 4 grands! Ages 11 - 2! Thank you for the prayers!

Caiti - Welcome to you too! I dropped 76 lbs then backslid a LOT and now have 170 or so to lose but I am determined and I know SP works so now that you're here I know you can do it too!

Lou - I feel somewhat better. To feel truly good after a bout of pneumonia it takes about 3 - 4 weeks sometimes a bit longer but I'm getting on top o f it and getting plenty of rest.

We are supposed to get 4 - 8 more inches of snow tonight on top of the couple of inches we got today. DH will be doing shoveling as his early a.m. exercise tomorrow. He's jumped on the bandwagon with me. He doesn't do SP but helps with cooking healthy meals and exercise every weekday! It's great that we both want the same things. He only needs to drop about 20 lbs but he want to get into better physical shape and eat healthy too. He is super supportive!

I hope I didn't miss anyone! I'm going to check my Spark Mail settings now! Have a great Thursday!

emoticon I joined this team for many reasons. I have always been inspired by ~Indygirl, since I began with spark. I also hope to find support and friendship with others who are on a similar journey to me. I have been trying to lose weight most of my life, trying every gimmick there is. I'm tired of reading books about it. I'm tired of trying fads. I just want to get down to business and be healthy once and for all. I now have over 100+ pounds to lose, and I'm so overwhelmed. It seems so surreal that I'm at this place in my life. Thanks for letting me be a part of your team! emoticon --Caiti

Hello all!

Sorry! I just jumped on in to the conversation. Jeanne I hope you feel better being sick is no fun. I am a co-leader on Guided by Gods Promises so I will make sure to put in a prayer request for you to get better.

I guess I will put in a little something about myself here too. My name is Janel. I am 46 years old . I have been married to the love of my life Paul for 27 years going on 28. We have four grown sons one who happens to be severely autistic. I love SP and reading the blogs! So fun. I like table games and sci fi tv shows and movies. I am going to go see the new Star Wars movie with my son today. I am a Christian (thats important) and I am trying to lose over sixty pounds but its been a little bit of a fight but NewSparkDebbie had some ideas for me to try. I really like this group and I am excited to be a part of it. That's me in a nutshell...or maybe something a little bigger than that LOL.

Anything is possible with a determined heart and mind.

Deb: Me too! Also Levoquin, Nasonex and the dreaded steroids! I'm drinking some cranberry juice periodically to wash out my poor kidneys! If I'm not markedly better by Wednesday or Thursday I'm to go back in! My poor doctor has been through this with me so many times in the last 19 months or so that she should just have a recording of what she says and play it each time I come in! LOL! I'm getting slap happy at this point and believe for the sake of everyone else I should get offline! LOL! I so appreciate the advice that both you and Janis gave me about the nebulizer though. It works SO much better than an inhaler!! It's been a real blessing to have it! Signing off now until I get a nap in!

Lou - My DH and I actually do use a crock pot for quite a few items. The rest I just pop in the oven and then take them out..... steam a healthy vegetable (I love yellow and green squash - I buy it already cut up and frozen) and maybe make a small helping of quick fix carbs then poof...... done!

JPP - I also don't remember you but emoticon !!!

I'm going on 3 days with very little sleep and between that and all the coughing I am not feeling to bright eyed and bushy tailed but I don't think I'm getting any worse so that's a blessing! I know the nebulizer treatments are helping as it no longer feels as if there is a huge band around my chest! That is also a blessing!

This year another small goal I have is to find the blessing in the midst of the trouble so I hope I manage to do that each time!!

Last night for new year's eve my husband, sons and I played a card game called the Oregon trail. It was one of those adventure games where you are pioneers trying to get to oregon and while you are making the trail you have things happen to you such as not being able to cross rivers so you lose valuable supply cards. We never did make it to Oregon LOL. We also made a full feast and had a snack dinner. It was delicious and I am so proud of myself for staying within my calories. I made a delicious fish dinner for my husband and I. Very healthy. It was a fun night. The night ended with everyone blowing horns and clashing pots...and then we crashed LOL.

Anything is possible with a determined heart and mind.

Hi Gini - Nice to see you posting!!

Had kind of a long night what with fireworks going off for 4 hours and two PTSD sufferers and a scared puppy in the house but we greeted the new year in a good mood this morning!

I have two GOALS for the new year on top of that resolution I made.... Cooking more of our meals. I have 4 simple yet healthy meals planned out for this week and will see if I can manage them on my own. DH does the cooking when he is home in time especially when I'm really under the weather but I am aiming for doing these 4 myself even though I'm not even at my usual cruising altitude! I am pretty determined so I have hope! Also going to try to get more movement in. I don't know how that will go until I get a diagnosis and some help for my problem but I will try!

I hope you all enjoyed your New Year's Eve - Whatever you did to celebrate!

Hello, ( at last ) and Happy New year to everyone. I will be more visible and participating with my team at last now. Have a wonderful windup to the holidays and have as good a time, taking your house back and undecorating as you did putting it up. I will look at that project tomorrow.

I am feeling much better in my chest after using my nebulizer 3 times so far. I felt well enough to go shopping with DH this morning!

Janis - I CAN use mine up to every 4 hours if needed. So far every 8 has worked okay. I listen to an audio book with headphones on while I'm doing my treatments and clean up! Thank you for the good advice!

Deb- Thank you as well!

Lou - Thanks for the good wishes!

Happy New Year one and all!

CoveGirl, How sweet, enjoy the time with your granddaughters!

Jeanne, Congrats on the new toy! Hope you feel better soon. At my worst I've been told to do nebs every 4 hours, even setting an alarm to get up during the night. At bad bronchitis level, nevermind if you get pneumonia, 4X/day is probably needed for 7 - 10 days anyway. I gets boring because it takes several minutes and then you have to rinse out the parts that hold the medicine and go in your mouth, but it can be a Godsend!
God bless you! emoticon

Okay my wise ladies of advice...... DEB and JANIS - I am going to get one of the "urgent" doctor appointments at the clinic I go to and getting a nebulizer! I felt like I was getting over this crud before last night and then about 5 o'clock in the evening I started to cough. Now I have that heavy feeling in my chest that says that bronchitis/pneumonia is just around the corner. New Year's Eve break is just around the corner as well so I have this one chance to be seen at MY doctor's office and I'm taking it! I don't know if they'll okay antibiotics at this point but I just want this heaviness out of my chest! Although if I can see my regular doc or they can confer with her, then I'm sure antibiotics won't be out of the equation totally. I'll check in when I get to feeling better. I want to give ya'll a bunch of emoticon for listening to me and advising me and supporting me!

Janis - After the advice both Deb and you have given me, the next time I end up in the office for a lung sickness, I am going to ask for a prescription for one. I don't have asthma but I end up with bronchitis/pneumonia about every 3 - 4 months this last 19 months or so. Sometimes more frequently. My immunologist has a suspicion that when I get it and then get it again in 2 - 3 weeks that it actually never went away it just calmed down a bit.... When I used to smoke (smoke free for 6 years!!!) I had episodic asthma attacks but 2 years after I quit that went away. Also for the whole time since I quit until about 19 months ago, I hardly ever got really down and dirty sick when I used to get chest cold, after chest cold when I smoked. I have had so MANY benefits since I quit and I love it! I cannot abide the smell of cigarette smoke anymore! The entrances of stores always gag me because people smoke right there.

Anyway I am not going to go hunting for symptoms of different connective tissue immune disorders so that I don't accidentally self diagnose until I don't know what my actual symptoms are..... I have a bad habit of doing that so I'm waiting and letting the doctors look at my list of symptoms and then tell me what the deal is. I am a little familiar with RA as my DH's best friend's wife has it. However I don't know about all the things that go along with it. I have a list that I typed up of stuff that started happening those 19 months ago and that's what I'm taking with me to the rheumatologist. I am already on some strong arthritis medicine and pain medication for my back injury. I can't imagine how truly bad I'd be feeling if I was taking nothing since I hurt really bad now and I'm already on stuff.

The nurse at the immunologist floated one more theory that keeps coming back to me. I recently quit taking a cholesterol medication. It had started causing more severe muscle cramping and other things. I had been on it for years. She says that that medication can build up in your system until you have all the symptoms I have and it takes up to 5 years to get out of all your cells and for you to get to feeling better. I found out that it was making me feel worse totally by accident at first. I forgot everything but my pain meds for two days in a row and I felt notably better. So I did the old trick of dropping each one of my meds one at a time for 3 days. When I hit the cholesterol med --- that did the trick. I quit taking it and informed my family doctor. This is something I will bring up with the rheumatologist as well. The nurse was speaking from personal experience and she is not a doctor but she named off some symptoms that I hadn't even mentioned at that point so it's worth investigating. There are just so many things it could be at this point that it boggles the mind.

My eating is doing very well and I'm not feeling quite as bogged down in the sinuses today so that is two good things to be grateful for!

Now that I've written a book here and bored you all to tears, I'll wish you a happy Thursday and thanks again for the great advice and the wonderful support!

Jeanne, if you have bad asthma or frequent bronchitis I would recommend asking for an Rx for nebulizer machine, your insurance should pay for it. Mine is a life saver.
Your doc can prescribe other meds besides albuterol, or things in combination with albuterol to use in it if need be.
(I've wound up in the hospital anyway when prednisone and even in-office IV steroids didn't help my breathing.)

Debbie, you're right, most fats are 120 calories per Tablespoon / 40 per teaspoon. Doesn't mean they should be eliminated from the diet completely because many are healthy and needed and they keep you feeling fuller than anything.
IndyGirl Beth had a post or blog that was really good, and if I can summarize without misquoting, she said something like:
carbs will keep you full for about 2 hours,
protein will keep you full for about 4 hours and
fat will keep you full for about 6 hours.
I think the key is measure and track. emoticon If you use a non-stick pan, 40 calories of oil per person might do the trick and help you absorb vitamins and avoid snacking.

Deb - I will definitely ask the doctor about it if I have to go in this time! Sounds like it might help me avoid the doctor's office too! Thank You!

Jeanne.... my grandson is 9 and has asmia. He uses it everytime he starts to get congested or if a cold flairs up. It helps with the congestion and opens up,the sinuses....
