Awesome Deb,
I am really looking at the "plate" for the amounts of each type of food to eat, I never really paid attention to it before, but it totally makes sense. Half veggies, 1/4 protein and 1/4 grains or starches.

I am very shy about eating starches, sometimes I wonder if this is why I seem to "want something" after I eat. I have also started having a piece of fruit at the end of each meal, this, I think signals my brain that I am through eating.

Leslie - Honey I agree with Deb 110%! No one should ever call you out in public! Shame on him! His job is to pump you up not put you down! I think you are so brave going into a gym and working out! Good for you!

Leslie .....
I am the same way! When someone pushes me (especially in public), I freeze up.....
NEVER should your trainer have called you out in public. That was rude and un-professional no matter how great of a guy he might be or how much he was trying to help. If you continue with him you might want to consider telling him how you felt and that you would prefer a quite place to discuss these things..... Otherwise maybe someone else would be a better match? You built up the courage to go into the gym and that in itself is an accomplishment to be praised!

Jeanne and Sheryl .....
I adore turkey! I'm just to lazy to deal with the mess more than twice a year! Sad right?!

Sheryl I love veggies and have NO problem piling on the protein that way as well. She wasn't specific but I'm sure she would agree that ANY kind of protein would work. She believes in helping yourself naturally and without meds when possible and that's probably the ONLY reason she hasn't pushed weight loss surgery. That and every time I talk to her about it I cry ....
I'm such a sad mess but I am smart enough to know that until I fix the issue and addiction for food in my brain and the stresses in my life, I will have had Weight Loss surgery that failed!

I have not been doing well, and, because I'm a coward, I haven't been posting my weights. While my nutrition has been poor, I still get to the gym for strength training and lots and lots of cardio. I work with a personal trainer, and he's such an intuitive observer that he knows when I'm not eating appropriately. He called me out on it last week and told me, if I eat garbage, I'll feel like garbage. Then he wanted to know what I had been eating. Since this question was posed to me while I was on an elliptical in the middle of a gym full of people, I refused to answer him. In truth if we'd been in a quiet corner, I doubt I would have had the courage to be candid with him. When he told me to start eating healthy, I just teared up and turned to stone. He eats to fuel his body, and I eat to fill empty places in my heart and soul. I doubt he's ever had issues with his body image. While he might be empathetic, he's never walked a mile in my shoes. Don't get me wrong. I adore him, and he's helped me so much. He keeps telling me that we're in this together, but this is something I can only do for myself.

As I am a whole food plant base advocate, I would of course suggest finding a plant protein, but you should do what keeps you satisfied.

Turkey is lean....... so pile on that and fill yourself up with the protein! I know that my satiety level is so much better when I eat enough protein! (((HUGS DEB)))

And I have been told by my doctor that I need to stay away from Starches, sugars, and pile on the lean protein. Apparently lean protein shrinks the liver......

That is great, self esteem seems to be quite lacking in most of us. Even before I gained weight I had low self esteem. it took me many years to learn to let myself take credit for my actions and not allow someone else to do it.

Thanks Sheryl! I took to heart the articles that talk about getting more self esteem while you are at your heaviest so that when you get to goal weight, you won't wonder why you don't feel any different. Also being a part of a "team" of people with the same goals who cheer you on really does a boost on a person's feelings of self worth!

I did great Mon and Tues did over 80 minutes a day working out. I was a bit manic though and not sleeping so early this am I crashed which is totally normal for me since I'm bipolar, and I have had a resting day. I'm hoping to get in a short workout later this evening.

My dad visited me with his wife today and actually paid me a compliment about my weight drop! I almost fainted! This man has never paid me a compliment in my life except to tell me I married the right man! I had a talk with him a while back though and told him I didn't call him much because he was rude and so forth and since then he's been a peach to me on the phone! SP has helped me get some confidence going for myself!

Doing a little extra exercise all every day this week to try and offset how little I'll probably get in next week. Going to be spending lots of time with in-laws that have mobility issues and who start to feel guilty if I try to do any of it in front of them.

And got the paperwork in for Adminstratix (why in the world couldn't they have just called it administrative?) status to my parents estate. Still haven't had an overwhelming urge to eat the few pieces of Halloween candy I put aside for myself, to I think I'll just send them to work with hubby.

On second thought I'll probably spend so much time cleaning up the house and yard I'll probably hit 10k steps a day without trying. Huh...

Progress, not perfection.

Oh Sheryl I am going to re weight in the morning to see if mine is water weight..... I sure hope so. The weather has turned cold so I know for sure I am not sweating or getting rid of the water like I should be but I was up 6 pounds so I'm pretty sure it's not ALL water.

How's everyone doing this week? I have seriously lost focus!

Thanks Sheryl - I can tell when I start dumping water - the pee that never ends LOL! I will weigh once that starts and stops for the month! I had been eating a bit more than usual due to some medication I was taking but that seems to have tapered off thank goodness. I knew I was going to have a WI that was at least equal to last weeks but then the water started piling on and then I knew a gain was coming. You know I never really tracked the water weight until I got on SP and started noticing it really coming on and off...... now I'm very aware of it! Isn't that odd?

I was nice here yesterday - got up to 25 degrees and was sunny! Love me some sunshine! I get so tired on grey days! I am dreading weighing in today as I know I am up due to TOM! I haven't had a bad WI for a while and they always make me shudder even when I know the reason for them! I need to get over it! At least I'm not weighing every day like I used to - now that was depressing! LOL!

I want a Cookie- Bargaining- Holidays and the Food Demon by Beth Donovan

The Holidays have foods galore sparking around like ornaments on trees glowing to get our attention. What's worse is these are EMOTIONAL FOODS! They bring back memories of childhood or better times, nostalgia.

So we see, we want. Ask yourself a few questions about EMOTIONAL FOODS:

1) Ask yourself WHAT you are wanting to FEEL. Warm, safe and comforted is usually my answer. During the holidays, nostalgic comes to mind. So how can I come by those same feelings without food? Warm luxury soft blankets, funny favorite movies, scented candles, old photos...

2) IF doing something makes you sad or really uncomfortable, don't do it. Looking through old photos brings back good memories to me, but then I get sad missing people and want to kill the pain with food. It used to be that when I was younger, people would bring up how I needed to lose weight at family dinners. Now, I would shut them down by saying "If you really cared, you would bring this up in private and not at a family dinner." If that didn't work, I would start a new tradition and avoid the negative nellies all together. There is no reason to put yourself in painful situations that make you want to overeat or binge later. Love yourself and protect yourself like you would your child.

3) I want a cookie... Well, if I have one, and I going to eat the whole box? PROBABLY! So here is the trick! Do not under any circumstances allow the whole box into your house if they are cookies you like or unhealthy cookies. Get a single cookie or two from a bakery. Leave the bakery and enjoy. Same with ice cream- don't buy it at the store unless it's single serve. Get it out, where you can only have a little.

4) Don't bargain with yourself. It just ends up badly. Have a plan in mind. Make plans ahead of time when you find pitfalls. For example, I found that I get into the box of cookies if they are in the house. I can't bargain myself down to two cookies. SO I wound up making a RULE that I have to get cookies at the bakery and no more than two. NO bargaining.

The food demon is very tricky and seducing. He lies and tells you you are in control. Then he loads high fructose corn syrup and additives into the foods to make us crave like insane people. Don't be fooled. The more natural a product is, the less processed... the better your body will respond and not crave.

I had to really have a conversation with myself about that before picture. But I decided no more hiding ever. But I agree with Sheryl... it's a personal choice. I do like seeing where I was.

I think this has to be a personal choice, I did not take a before pic. I too have a problem just looking in the mirror when trying on clothes.

I have heard people talk about taking a "before" picture when you start....I just can't bring myself to look in a full length mirror, never mind take a picture!!!
Does this really help? having a picture to compare to??? I am so ashamed now....I don't ever want to remember where I am now.

You don't have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great.

Hey Spark Friends! I've been away from Spark for about 5 weeks or so. I had computer issues and was sick for awhile and all kinds of other things conspiring against me and spark happening. But things are resolving, and I'm back, and the scale is shifting down again and I'm feeling better and on it goes. YAY!

I also discovered that my Spark Activity Tracker was making me more and more depressed. It was showing things like 400 steps total for a day. Then I decided to triple check it, and low and behold, it ended up being 75% inaccurate! So it wasn't me, but the tracker.

I tossed it, and there is no love lost on that thing. I have an inexpensive old school style pedometer that is 95% or better accurate. I've triple checked it against counting my steps myself on a measured 1/4th kilometer walking track. This cheap pedometer works! So now I am encouraged again.

So yay!!! I missed everyone and hope to be back here on a more regular basis again. emoticon

@NEWTEXDEBBIE - I had the Lap-Band from 2008 - 2013 (5 Years).
I had the Lap-Band removed in November 2013 due to complications and then 3 months later I had a Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (VSG).
Both procedures were done Laproscopic.
I can answer any questions you have about either procedure.
I am only 8 months out from getting the sleeve, so I am still somewhat of a newbie.
My highest weight before getting Lap-Band was 280 lbs. I weighed myself this weekend and I am down to 182 lbs.

Thank you Sheryl and Deb for straightening me out! Yikes was I confused! I was confusing the sleeve with the band I do believe.

I've had a blah day! I don't think I'm actually falling ill I just think I went and burned my candle at both ends for a couple of weeks and now my get up and go has gotten up and went!

Deb - I hope you get to feeling better real soon! Congestion is absolutely no fun at all!

SPARKLINGME176 ...... Happy Anniversary to you and DH!

Sheryl and Jeanne ...... The Sleeve is definitely permanent. They remove most of your stomach in the process but the re-routing of the intestines is not involved. I have a lot more information to look up but I am hoping that it can be done laposcopic like the Banding procedure. I trust my doctor completely. She is the one that did my hysterectomy and my re-constructive surgery as well. She will not be the surgeon doing the gastric surgery but she has suggested two separate surgeons that specialize in the area of Gastric surgery and that SHE would trust operating on her if she was in my position, which she is not thank goodness..... The Banding is a reversal style operation that can be un-done if you would ever choose to do so but it is designed to help people ideally with 100 or less pounds to lose. Unfortunately I have 190 to get to my goal health weight and that requires a more drastic scale on things. My doctor stated that with my history of infections that the Sleeve would be the less chance of complications. The Bypass would be extremely chancy with my history.

Jeanne, as for my throat, I have a large amount of fat build up in my throat and neck area that has shrunk my esophagus to the point of danger. The sleep apnea that is a result of my morbid obesity has caused swelling of the throat even further. The only way to correct both conditions is a very rapid amount of weight loss. My ENT also stated that throat weight loss is a very slow process. That the fat I carry in my throat will be some of the last weight to come off so the faster I get the process started the faster the air passage will open up. I really DO NOT want a breathing tube inserted into my throat for air passage! emoticon

Deb - I haven't done much research but I'm with Sheryl on this. It depends on how much confidence you have in your doctor's advice. I know you're battling diabetes but am unaware of what throat issues you have. If you risk more by not having the sleeve done then I guess the choice would be obvious. I know I personally would want the sleeve because it can be reversed whereas the bypass is permanent. I can identify with the feeling of your brain aching!

My Doctor(s) are advising I see a specialist for a Gastric Sleeve......

I have mixed feelings about a this. I am scared to death, not about surgery but about the possibility of infection afterward. I have been fighting to keep from having surgery for almost four years. I keep telling the doctors and myself that I can do it this time emoticon
I have full intentions of doing just what I say when I say it, I'm just to weak to finish what I promise. I WANT TO, I just never accomplish what I set out to do. emoticon

So the doctor and I spoke for a long time about the choices and decisions that have to be considered. She explained that the banding really wasn't a good choice at this time because of the large amount I need to drop. She suggested that since I have so many issues with infections that the sleeve would probably be the best decision because its the least likely to have complications in that area. I also took the time to familiarize myself with the three different operations over the internet and found that the weight loss is just about equal between Gastric Bypass and Gastric Sleeve. Banding is suggested AFTER you have done the Sleeve IF you still have a large amount of weight to loose...... emoticon

TO MUCH TO THINK ABOUT! emoticon

So DH and I are going to go to a seminar covering the different styles to get ourselves educated on all of this. One thing is for sure I have to make a move now due to the severity of my throat, and my out of control diabetes.....
Now my brain hurts! emoticon

Our town is old, many of the buildings are rumored to be haunted. Each year Main Street hosts ghosts walks through town, three separate tours. There are actors at each stop that tell the story of the house and why it was haunted, or the business. One of the most famous shootouts in Florida was in St Lucie County, the outlaws were brought into town and laid out in front of the local mortuary, this is one of the stops. I am a tour guide, not an actor in this event. I have tried to rotate my tours to do all 3 tours. Lots of fun. If I can I will share pictures.

Hey All - Been MIA for a couple of days! My shoulder was giving me fits and today I found the problem. I have been using my laptop in my chair on my actual lap and that was causing me to pinch something in my shoulder so DH got me an inexpensive desk so that that is not happening anymore! Isn't he the sweetest??

Bless her heart Jeanne......
They are just so powerful and frightening! I am not that afraid of them but when that early warning system goes off I head for somewhere other than this RV.

I rode one out with my sister when I was around 11. DS was VERY pregnant and I can remember being amazed when she wiggled her very huge belly under their bed to ride it out.... I also remember peeking out the glass sliding doors and watching the really big BBQ grill getting picked up and hurled straight toward my face. I can still hear the antenna that was attached to the brick fireplace chimney getting twisted around and around before it was ripped from the roof...... THAT WAS NOT one of my favorite memories emoticon
When our children were younger and my oldest was around 13 we had a really bad week of storms come through our town, which was directly in one of the tornado alleys, and we slept with the windows cracked open at night because we had 7 or 8 come through in that one week. We spent a lot of time in our bathroom with not only our children but the children from 2 of the apartments above us sitting in the bathtub.... So BIG hug to your DD and I hope it lessens with time.

Oh I respect tornadoes and have a "healthy" fear of them. I just don't stress myself out every time there is a "slight chance" of one here where I live. My poor DD is so petrified that any time there is one anywhere in the state she panics. I don't know where her fear came from but I feel so bad for her! She is so brave about everything else in her whole life but for some reason tornadoes scare her silly! We don't even live in tornado alley. We did at one time when we were in the Army but she is too young to remember that. Also we were never involved in one in any manner.

Good Morning Jeanne, and I am most definitely afraid of tornadoes. I have helped clean up after those monsters and anyone that has ever rode one out knows they are due a lot of respect and loads of fear...... emoticon

We are looking at bad weather today. Lots of rain and the possibility of tornado's. The radar looks as if we will miss the worst of it all but that front tail might give us a little ride for the day.... We need the rain but we have LOTS of tall, tall pines and they just love to come down or shed their weak limbs when the wind picks up emoticon

Wishing you all a great Monday Morning!

I am going in on the 14th to have blood taken for both my yearly screenings and a metabolic panel to see how my vitamins and minerals are sitting. I am excited to see how my yearly's come out since I am down almost 10% of my original body weight! I need to see where I'm lacking in the vitamin/mineral department because I am still feeling so tired all the time but other than adding in B-12, I don't want to load up on anything else until I talk to my doctor about the results of that panel! I do know from tracking that I am not getting enough calcium so I am going to at least start a daily multivitamin with calcium added!

Finally a breath where I'm not wanting to pass out for an hour or needing to do something for DH! He is doing really great pain wise and I am so grateful that I began on SP when I did so that I can keep up with doing things for him! He was up and down last night and up and down today but he tried to let me get some sleep in between, bless him! My problem is that it takes me forever to get comfy and settled in the bed. Then a while to get to sleep. Whereas he is out as soon as his heat gets to the pillow! So I've had a collective of like 5 hours of sleep! But I am getting plenty of exercise in!

I never saw a wild thing sorry for itself.

Another wonderful morning at 65. I am loving the cool weather. BlueJay, I love the idea of cleaning one room a day. I usually clean everything on Friday for the weekend, then during the week I will add special things like cleaning out the fridge or laundry. It works for me.

Thanks Donna! Went to bed really early last night therefore I am up really early this morning! It's okay though it gives me time to do my SP cruising before we head out to get DH to the hospital! I have found that I have been really working off my nervous energy. Yesterday I started to de-clutter my house. I found an article here on SP on how to do that in 30 days. It breaks it down to one thing to do per day. I printed it out and am following it to the best of my ability! Of course I don't have a garage so i will probably stick something else in that slot. Between doing that and taking care of the chores DH normally does I have been a cleaning fool! I already did that closet in my room and I got a taste of how good being organized can feel so I think I'm addicted to it now.... LOL!

Thanks Debbie! Got an extra 4 hours of sleep this morning and that really helped! Hubby is a bit anxious but being a "man" about it and telling me he's not! emoticon I am doing pretty darn well handling the stress! Am a bit worried about DD though they found some protein in her urine which is a sign of preclampsia and they may induce the baby early. It's not "too" early mind you but she wants her daddy and me in there and the poor man is going to be recovering from surgery!

I woke to 65 and sun, high of 80. Love it! I enjoy fall in Florida so much!
I am doing great on the unprocessed diet, lots of fresh fruit and veggies, have to be careful with corn and things with tiny seed, but doing great!

Last day to get the house in shape for DH"s recovery from triple hernia surgery! I'm tired already and still have things I'd like to get finished! Really though it's ready enough and I'll be here to do what he needs done so I may take a partial rest day! I didn't sleep much the last couple of nights! I may just go back to bed for a while this morning! Hugs to you all!

We are supposed to cool off a bit too. I don't eat much on what I call my big meals, for breakfast I had scrambled egg and toast. Then last night for dinner I had a bowl of soup. Home made of course. During the day I had a cup of diced cantaloupe, a salad 1 cup, an Italian ice. I eat mainly veggies and no processed food, I think that helps keep me full.

We have a cool front headed down from the north and I am super excited! I have more energy in cooler weather........

Donna, I wish I could help you feel better emoticon

Jeanne, I am amazed I never had gestational diabetes.

Sheryl, I seem to do so much better with small frequent meals but I seem to lose better eating twice a day.

My body seems to function opposite of what all the weight loss experts say that it should. I think that's part of my problem, I try to make myself fit into the mold of what the weight loss coaches, doctors, and specialists say that I should. I do well eating 2 main meals with the occasional apple, banana, or orange with fresh ground peanuts when I FEEL hungry. My biggest failure is in the amount of food I allow myself to eat and the type of food I feed it. I could behave and eat what I am suppose to but that's the issue with me...... I tend to rebel when I am suppose to get started on these healthy eating plans. I know that IF I can get my head straight then the body will follow emoticon emoticon emoticon
Who knows for sure what each of the bodies in this world can or even will do?

I feel better eating like that too, perhaps you could eat your main meals then and eat what will keep you in balance as a snack at other times. I have not seen the amounts required for your condition, but perhaps that would work.
