What a wonderful evening meeting new Spark friends and seeing old ones. It was like an old family get together. I'll try and get some pics posted tomorrow.

Denise, we really missed you. I sure hope you're feeling better.

Have a great race tomorrow team!

Sleepydean I'm sorry to hear you are sick. With out getting to tmi and personal is it 'cold like' runny nose, itchy eyes, or is it flu like.. ya know icky stuff.

The reason I ask is (can't remember where you are from) we are know for our wonderful pollen out here in the PNW! This year is very bad too. Thinking/hoping maybe you are just having an allergy attack (even if you aren't normally prone to them). Just a thought. Now if it's flu like symptoms well that's thanks to the plain ride.

Hope you feel good enough to run tomorrow.

And I'm sick... I'll have to play it by ear about dinner tonight. I had big plans for today but now I'm just staying in bed.

Hopefully the flight problems will be the only issues you deal with on this trip! At least you're coming in a couple of days before the race so you'll have time to relax before race day.

Tammy and Denise,
So sorry about your flight problems. Hopefully once you get here you can put it behind you! Safe travels. If you take the Max train from the airport it stops at the convention center, but you probably already know that.

I have no idea why our flight was cancelled, no explanation was offerred. Denise got reticketed but I didn't make that flight either, so I'm sitting here for 4 hours waiting for a flight to Seattle. Won't get in until 3 but will try to get to the expo directly from the airport instead of going to my hotel first.

Denise, where are you staying? You should make your 4 pm show without a problem... hope you enjoy it!

Well Tammy and my flight was cancelled so this day is not going as planned. I had to shuttle to different airport and Tammy will probably have to connect in Seattle and get in even later because my flight was full. My plane lands at 1225 and I'm going to book it straight to convention center.

I'm excited!!!!! Tomorrow I will go and get my stuff at the expo! I hope to be there for the 1:00 pm time. Remember I hate crowds so maybe it won't be busy yet. We have lots to do on Saturday before we go out to dinner. So the sooner I can get all of that stuff the better.

Carry on is packed! Traveling light to avoid baggage fees... Compression knickers are on the line drying (of course I didn't realize they were still in the laundry until I went to pack!) - hope I don't forget them at home emoticon

Sad to be missing dinner Sat night, I really do want to meet you ladies! Anyone who wants to say "hi" at the expo Friday I'll be wearing a white and light blue OC HM tech shirt... I'm tall and blonde, with glasses. Same thing if you want to say good morning on your way to your corral - amazing how many Spark Friends I meet up with this way at races - I'll be in corral 17, near the back of the corral. And of course I plan to hang around the "S" family reunion area, in case anyone wants to stop by there and talk about their race...

If we don't meet, please know that I wish all of you a wonderful experience, whether running or walking, and I hope our paths will cross. So excited to be coming to Portland!!

I am sooo excited my aunt just called and she booked a room at a lodge in Hood River for after the race. She had no idea I really wanted to stay there. (she's always been my favorite)

I've got to finalize packing tonight and I'll be at the airport bright and early tomorrow!

Oops forgot to let you know that I was wrong about the weekend with the Stepkidlet, it's not that weekend like I had thought. So that's one less.

I AM Excited! (I know that's a shock!)

I am excited to meet a lot of great spark people who are all trying to figure out how to be healthy and get / stay fit!

I'm excited to put real faces to Real names. (Name tags? Or well we remember?)

I'm excited to do a run/walk in my city

I'm excited that the weather is going to be great!

I'm excited that I will get some great BLING!!!!! at the end!

And I'm excited that I am ABLE to do this at all, as a year ago it took me 45 min to walk 1 mile! I just WALKED 3 in that time!

nah.. no excitement here!

I'm not sure that I'll be worth much at work this week, I'm so excited! And Candy, I think it's as much or more about meeting everyone as it is about the race, though I'm looking forward to doing that, of course.

If you want to add actual names on your list for dinner, my hubby is Dale (FITFORLONG, though he's not active socially here), and Shannon's hubby and kidlets are Pat (hubby), Kaileigh (kidlet 1) and Brogan (kidlet 2).

I found out one of my high school friends I reconnected with on Facebook who lives in Beaverton is going to be walking the race, too, so we're meeting up for lunch on Saturday (for the first time in 30+ years). I'm SO incredibly excited about this weekend--is it time to leave for Portland yet?!

I've heard from another Spark friend who'll be walking with me/us from Coral 21! I know Roxi will take off running at some point - cause you're super-awesome, yea! - and it'll be good to have someone else to walk with and we can keep each other motivated and moving!

Denise, Ovo is a fabulous show! We went to that same one back in April and absolutely loved it. How great that you can take advantage of that deal! The Expo is also on the Max line so you're totally hooked up, transportation-wise!

You're right about the "late" start. I thought it would be earlier, too, but it works out ok. I'll take Max in from my NE neighborhood in the morning, then hubby Bill will come in on Max later for the finish.

Roxi emoticon I love how excited you are!
I'm not so much jazzed for the race per se, but getting to meet everyone? Oh Yea!

Here's the current list for dinner Saturday night at the Spaghetti Factory -
Candy
Bill
Denise
Dale
Shannon
Pat
Kaileigh
Brogan
Roxanne
DonutMan
StepKidlet
Gaye
SleepyDenise
Chas
Sung?

Chas, I wasn't sure if Sung would be joining you or not, so I'm adding him just in case. That brings us to a solid 15. I'll be happy to bump it up if anyone else wants to join us.

5 days!

I just now noticed that the race doesn't start until 8! Now I am no early bird, but that is such a later start. I thought I'd have no problem getting back to my hotel and showering before 12, but now I'm not sure.

P.S. I just bought a deal on the site travelzoo.com for a Cirque de Soleil show (OVO) playing at the Expo Center through the 20th. I have never seen a Cirque show so for under $40 I went for the matinee show on Friday. I am so excited for all this vacation has in store for me.

I will be one of the slower ones too. This is my seventh endurnce event since Jan! I'm tired, lol. How much I run depends on how my knee feels that day. The good news is I will get a chance to meet some of you! I'll go to the "s" area after the race Nd hang around a bit :)

That's what we did at the Seattle Rock'n'Roll last year; I know from experience about being one of the latter people to arrive and missing the speedy runners, but at least it was a place to hopefully catch up to one another.

It was warm here in the Seattle area for the 10K I did. I'm just hoping that I'm not going to regret the decision to not take a hydration pack but rely on water bottles on my belt and water on the course on Sunday. It worked well Saturday (only used half my water, and there was water less often than what there is supposed to be for Portland RnR). I know lots of people rely entirely on the water provided on the course, but I get thirsty way more often than that!

No worries! I do hope you'll all have a great time, no matter where everyone is.

I like what Denise suggested!! Meeting under the S sign for SparkPeople after the race might be a good idea. I'm walking the Half, so I'll be behind even the slowest runners - I'm looking at it as Sweeper duty!
emoticon

Gaye, the forecast this morning bumped the expected temps over the weekend to 72-73. We'll see how much things deviate between now and then.

Maybe we can meet up afterward under the letter S (for SparkPeople) if nothing else? For those of us who are slower, there is a good chance that the speedy folks will need to leave before we get there--with the varying start times, it would be a long time for the faster runners to hang out waiting for some of us. I'm hoping to move up a couple of corrals since I'm going a little faster these days, but I still won't be one of the "fast" runners.

I do hope I get to meet you while you're here.
Weather Forecast:
Sat: high 68 low 45
Sun: high 69 low 45
Partly cloudy both days.

If the forecast holds, that's good race weather for here in May.

Candy, looks like my other spark friends are coming in at all different times and are planning on getting together Sat night. That may be my only time to join them, so I have to bow out of the Spaghetti Factory dinner. Sorry!

I would still love to meet other sparkers, even at the start line or finish line! I will be carrying my phone, so if you think you'd be interested, message me and I'll give you my number.

Hope this works out!

ps Thank you everyone for the feedback on the weather!

The 10 day trend is showing NICE weather for the next 10 days... with Sat the 19th being low of 51 and a high of 69. As to how fast it warms up, it's hard to tell and as Gaye says to closer we get the better idea we will have.

The other thing to think about with the weather is what are YOU use to.... For us 'locals' that's a WARM day, and I will probably be in shorts and t-shirt from the start. However we have been so cold here for the past 4 months that this is a heat wave we are having. Now from CA, it still may be cold to you.

The weather here is so hard to predict. This weekend we're having unusually warm weather, high 80s. But we also get lots of rain. Best advice is to check the forecast on the Thursday before. Mornings are usually cool. I'm always warm so wouldn't wear a jacket. Arm warmers or throw away. I tend to wear shorts or cropped pants but if it's cold and/or wet legs could get cold. I hope that helps. I'll try to start posting forecasts as time gets closer.

Candy and other locals: What is the weather like this time of year. Of course I could look up the forecast on the internet but that never really tells the whole story. Is it significantly cooler in the mornings? Does it usually warm up before the race ends?

What types of clothes do you normally run in? Here in SoCal I would be in shorts and a singlet despite the morning temps being in the high 50's to low 60's because the minute the sun goes up the temps climb rapidly. Arm warmers instead of a jacket, or just a throwaway shirt. What might I expect there?

Thanks!

Tammy, I'm not sure what's on tap for us that Friday. I hope you can meet up with your friends.

I didn't get a confirmation email :(

There is another group of Sparkers that will be up that weekend, but might not do dinner. They all know each other and want something more 'intimate'. I'm torn... I want to meet all of you but am close to these others and really want to see them too!

Anyone up for an Expo meet on Friday late afternoon, after work? Or anytime really...

That's 14 - I can bump up the reservation if we have more folks interested in joining us. I did let the Spark Portland team know you'd all be in town but haven't gotten much response. We're kind of quiet over that-a-way!

I know other Portland people are running the RnR but likely have plans with other folks. It would be great if we could wrangle one big photo opp somehow. We'll see!

That's what I had put down that I thought we'd finish in, 3:00:00, but I'm really hoping for a fair amount under that. The last two we did was quite a bit better, but they were flatter courses; no matter, it will be FUN to do!

I was able to confirm with my friend, Shannon (HOPESFREEDOM here), that her family is coming to OSF, so that's four people there--I think you may have them included in the count already, Candy, but thought I should make sure.

I'M SO EXCITED!! Can you tell?

Candy, you should sneak in with me. emoticon I had put down that I planned to finish it in 3:00.00, and even with my knee and the limited running I've been doing I hope to make that time. But 4:00 hours is in the end of the world. I want to be able to run/walk some of it and not walk all of it. We shall see what the dr says tomorrow. I think it's getting better slowly.

I'm in corral #20, but given that I have NOT done the work and will NOT be running.. ok, maybe I'll run a little bit.. I'm wondering if I shouldn't start further back in the pack! I suppose as long as I stay ahead of the sweeper wagon I'll be fine, right? Or maybe I'll sneak in with Roxit!

Gaye, I'm with you LOL Looking forward to the dinner with everyone. We'll get you into one of these halfs some day!

Got my confirmation as well; I'm in corral #22, but thinking I need to change at the expo because we're running faster than that now. Not a big deal since it's all chip timed, but it would be nice to start a little further up in the crowd and not have so long to wait to start. At Seattle RnR last year we were in corral 27 (our first HM), and it took a full hour after corral 1 left to get to the start line!

I'm getting very excited with tacking down last minute arrangements for my trip.

I ran 7 miles yesterday - no pain in my knees! (At my last half in February I had pain from mile 4 on...) But unfortunately, training for other events and ongoing knee pain has left me little time to get in the necessary long runs. I may have to take it easy up there and enjoy the scenery rather than try to run a solid race.

I just got my confirm e-mail and I am in Corral 16.

PR races:
Nov 26, 2011 - San Dimas Turkey Trot 10K (1:07:34)
Dec 26, 2011 - Operation Jack Half marathon (2:27:44)
April 1, 2012 - Carlsbad 5000 5k (29:17)

Yippee! Thank you, Candy! All this talk of OSF had me hankering for some, so I went to our local OSF for dinner last Saturday before my most recent half. Had my best time to date, so it's a winning night-before-the-race meal as far as I'm concerned. I'm excited to meet everyone there!

OK! Reservation set for 15 at the Old Spaghetti Factory, Saturday, May 19 at 5 pm.

0715 S.W. Bancroft St.
Portland, OR 97239
P:503.222.5375

The reservation is under my name - Candy Bailey.
They could take us either early or late. I made a judgement call and went early, figuring we'd all be hoping for as good a night's sleep as we'll be able to get!

You can reach the Spaghetti Factory via the Portland Streetcar. Where I work is also located near the restaurant, so if anyone wants/needs to drive, I can provide parking via my keycard. We'll work out details in mail.

We're so close!

Thanks for the info ladies. I AM excited! I went to the track last night and tested my knee with some tempo work and seem none the worse for wear today emoticon of course there's a big difference between 5 miles and 13.1 ... And I need to get through another half next weekend! But it will be so much fun to see old spark friends and meet others I've only known online...

Really looking forward to it!

It looks like Gaye and Roxit have covered your questions, but let us know if there's anything else, yea?
I'd agree with Gaye, yes, go to the hotel first and then the expo. It's always better to be able to put down the bags and enjoy yourself!

As for Fareless Square (they're calling it the Free Rail zone now) it's still available!
trimet.org/fares/freerailzone.htm
You'll pay to go from the airport to your hotel, but won't need to pay to go from the hotel to the Convention Center for the expo, or to return to your hotel!

Closer and closer......

The Nines Hotel is in the heart of down down an great location for the race. It's right on the max line. Are you taking the MAX to the hotel or do they have a shuttle service? The Expo is right on the Max line and not too long of a ride from the hotel you'll go over the river to get there.

Also I do belive we still have fairless square. (they are talking about changing that but I don't think it's happened yet) And the area from where you are staying down town to the convention center (where I think the expo will be) is all in fareless square. If Candy knows different hope she'll say.

This is making me want to go out and do a training run! WHOO HOOO!

Tammy, it's very easy to get to the Expo from The Nines hotel so go there first and drop off your luggage and settle in. The hotel is right accross from Pioneer Square dubbed Portland's Living Room. All the Max trains go by there. It's maybe a 10 min train ride from there to the Expo. Look forward to meeting you!

I'm so glad Mike sent that email out yesterday, I've been totally awol from this site as I focused on other races. But yes, I'm getting excited!!!

To answer Candy's questions:

Spark name / real name: MarathonMom26.2 / Tammy

When are you arriving? Or are you already here? Arriving on Friday morning, same flight as SleepyDean! Yay!

Where are you staying? Downtown or near the airport? My knowledge of Portland geography is awful, but I think I'm downtown. Sharing a room at The Nines Hotel with another Sparker, FindingMein2012.

Will you need help with transportation? Just information I think. Is it easy to get from the airport to the hotel and then to the expo? Or should I go directly from the airport to the expo on Friday, and then to the hotel? I will only have a carry-on bag with me but I hate to roll it around the expo all morning. How does the public transit system work - do you pre-load a ticket with a flat amount or do you pay as you go, buying a new ticket each time you ride? (I've done both, just wondering what's easiest in Portland).

*edited: Just saw your post to SleepyDean and checked out the TriMet website. Only question not answered is whether or not it is easy to go to the hotel first and then the expo?

I would love to join you all for dinner at the Spaghetti Factory on Saturday night! That sounds like a great idea emoticon

I leave Sunday afternoon so it will be a short visit to Portland but I'm looking forward to meeting other Sparkers and enjoying the weekend. Yay!

SleepyDean, it'll be great to meet you! You can absolutely take Max (commuter train) from the airport (PDX) to the Expo at the Convention Center, and even on to your hotel after.
trimet.org

It does look like the Streetcar is a viable option to get us down to the Old Spaghetti Factory, so I'm going with that. I'll call to see if we can get a reservation for 15 at this point, and will expand it later as needed.

Yay Gaye! Knew you'd show up here soon!

Thanks to our Leader, MKKAYA for sending out the email to everyone.

I'd love to get together at some point. I'll be traveling alone, so I think my schedule for Friday/Saturday is pretty much open.

SleepyDean/Denise

Arriving Friday mid-morning

Staying @ Hotel Fifty, right near the start line

Transportation - I was hoping to get public transportation from the airport to the expo. And then I need to get back there I guess to rent a car on Sunday to go spend the rest of my week exploring Oregon. (My aunt and uncle just sold the house they've owned for 35 years in Boring and I now have no accomodations for Sunday-Wednesday so I'm trying to decide which way to head after the race.)

PR races:
Nov 26, 2011 - San Dimas Turkey Trot 10K (1:07:34)
Dec 26, 2011 - Operation Jack Half marathon (2:27:44)

I'm grinning from ear to ear because of your excitement here. I have to make my hotel reservations TODAY (I know, bad me waiting so long!) so we know where we are staying.

Looking forward to meeting as many as possible and, oh yes, the race itself. Less than a month to go now!

Your enthusiasm has me smiling here! I'm glad you're excited.. I'm getting there myself as well.

I can't send an email to the team, as I'm not a leader. I can send a Spark Mail to the leaders though to see if they'd send the info out to the team, and if they want to share the info to other teams as well.

Can't wait to see the hats! Heh. I'm hoping Bill and the Donut man bond so they can commiserate on having crazy Spark-women for wives LOL

This is going to be a blast! I am ready! (mentally that is)... did a 6.50 mile walk to day and I have a 'hot spot' on my foot! Good thing biking is in for the next 2 days! Next time I will not wear those SOCKS!

Anyways I talked to donut man and we are for sure on for dinner Sat night! I was wondering Candy, did you (or should you) send this as a email to the 'group' so it's not just on a team page that I forgot I joined a long time ago... (I seriously stumbled across it this last week)... Also should we/YOU, cross post it to the other RnR team pages?

I'm so excited to be meeting some fellow sparks for the first time... I'm looking into getting hat's for donut man and I... :) So you know who we are! (not that Candy and I needed anything special at the shamrock run... still a highlight for me!)

OK.. enough gushing tonight.. I'm just on a high that my knee handled a 6 mile town walk!!!!

OSF is one of my favorite places, so either one is good by me (mmmm, mizithra and browned butter . . . ).

My husband is coming too (FITFORLONG on here, though he doesn't do much beyond log his food!), and possibly my friend, Shannon (HOPESFREEDOM), and her husband (and maybe their two kids) who is coming from the Seattle area as well. I talked to her today, and she's definitely doing Portland RnR and wants to be in the loop for any Spark meet-ups that get set up.

Yay Denise!

Rox, that's a good suggestion too! Actually, the Old Spaghetti Factory that I know of is right off the Trolley line (not far from where I work) in SW Portland.

The Max and the Trolley hook up at some point (PSU maybe?) , so it wouldn't be difficult to reach and might be a bit easier to get into since it's not right at the heart of the race. Let me see what I can find out!

I'll be there!!!!! I maybe doing the wheel chair option, or walker race! emoticon But I will be there! OK seriously I hope to have that figured out by tomorrow. If nothing else I'll be walking the whole thing. I payed for that dang medal I will get it!!

I digress... (happens a lot)

I live in the area.

I'm up for good food and great friends! I would suggest the old spaggetie factory.. but It's not on the max line, and I think it should be some place close to the max line for those who need to use that for getting around.

Oh and it would be about 3 of us attending. Me, Donut man, and maybe my step daughter.

I'm excited, can you tell? Okay, now for the responses to your questions!

Spark name / real name: GETFIT2LIVE / Denise

When are you arriving? Or are you already here? Looks like we'll be arriving Saturday morning sometime, though I'm trying to sweet-talk my husband into heading that way Friday night so we have all day Saturday in town.

Where are you staying? Downtown or near the airport? Still deciding that (looking at what's available right now), but likely reasonably close to the race.

Will you need help with transportation? No, we're driving in from Seattle area.

Romano's Macaroni Grill is fine by me, but I'm happy with whatever most people want. Sure hope we can arrange a meet-up with as many as possible who will be there; thanks for getting the ball rolling, Candy!

Anyone else excited?

I thought we could get organized to see who is coming to town, who is already here, where you're all staying, and if you'd like to meet and greet and have a meal together before the big event and everyone scatters.

What do you think?

If you're interested and willing, let's get our information started (I admit I'm stealing some of this from the JASR team LOL).

(I'm not volunteering anyone else for this, but my husband and I, with two vehicles, can help shuttle folks from the airport or train station to hotels if need be.)

Remember the Expo is on Friday and Saturday, at the Convention Center - conveniently located on the Max (train) line.

There's a Romano's Macaroni Grill in downtown that might be convenient to meet at for those staying downtown. If you want, and we can get a headcount, I can see if we can get a reservation for a largish group now (if it's not already booked up).

There are obviously other dining options downtown, or by the airport, wherever the majority of us are located.

This should be enough to get us started. What do you think?
