Thank you for your response. They (doctors) said go for it. I am having no surgery abdominal discomfort just Arms, shoulder, and Quads. Things I am working and strengthening. I am just wondering about recovery time or not. Work light or keep pushing to get strong. thanks again, I understand you can't suggest anything medical. I got that, I just don't know about general work out recommendations of pushing though.

Hi DSCROW!

With all that your body has been through with the surgery, etc., you really should check with your doctor to see what he/she recommends for your fitness. Since your doctor is familiar with your medical history, they are in a much better position to know what is good for you and what limits you can or can't push. Once you have their input, you will be better able to judge if modifying exercises is a good idea or if they want you doing or avoiding anything specific.

Sorry I cannot be of more help than that. Please check with your doc and I wish you all the best with your fitness and health!

I hurt, I am not hurt as in injured, I hurt. I am coming back from a year that I could do no abs nor arms workouts but walked 10,000 steps a day during that year, because of a liver hemorrhage, abdominal surgery 1/2013 then two very big hernia's preventing working out until repaired 12/2013. I am on the mend feeling good but since starting the workout I hurt daily. I am walking and running and took a speed training work out a week ago and muscles I forgot I had hurt. I have been doing lots of stretching.

What should I do. That is my question. I am pushing on through it and one place is better and a new one hurts. Do I just need to keep pushing through it? I don't want to hurt myself. Should I be perhaps have a rest day more often for muscle recovery. Should I continue daily but modify or do less reps? I know to gain strength I must work these muscles but I don't want to undo more than I am getting done.

Thanks so much for your input. Doing week 2 day 5 today.

Hi Carol!

Check out this blog by Coach Nicole for help in choosing the size dumbbells to use:

www.sparkpeople.com/blog/blog.asp?po
st
=you_asked_how_much_weight_should_i_R>lift

And here is one with some info on resistance bands:

www.sparkpeople.com/resource/fitness
_a
rticles.asp?id=292

I will tell you on the resistance bands, I started with one that was light to medium in terms of how much resistance it provides. You don't want to start out with one that is just too hard for you to stretch much.

Hope this helps!

Thank you SHEENADEE for the links, they are a HUGE help! emoticon WOW!!! So much great information, those articles sure have changed the way I have been thinking & have given me so many new ideas. I identified myself so many times in that info! I have found the answers to so many of my questions & now have a much better positive outlook. I found that I was actually harming my health, the more the weight loss stayed the same...the less & less I would eat (sometimes only 475 cal a day as a way of self 'punishment'). You will never know how much you have changed my life with a simple "reply".

THANK YOU SO VERY VERY MUCH!!! emoticon

Hi UTAHJOJO!

To find the appropriate video assignments, go to the main page for this team. Then under the "Challenge Details" heading, click on the link for the week you are currently in (for example, click on "Complete Week 1 Action Steps"). A new window will pop up. Under the Week's Action Plan heading, you'll see a link called "Get your workout videos." Click on that. That takes you to an article in which there is a table with your workout plan. There is a link for each day in that table (for example, the link is called "Day 1", etc.) that you click to access the assigned video.

If that explanation seems confusing, you can access the article mentioned directly via this link:

I hope this helps. Enjoy the bootcamp!

Hi I have questions. I barely joined this boot camp challenge and I don't see where the links are to different boot camp workouts and if there are specific ones to do week 1 / week 2 etc. Anyone offer some guidance?
I've just been going to "videos" and finding anything that said part of boot camp challenge.

Hi TMCAT1129!

Most of us hit plateaus like that now and then, even when we seem to be doing everything right. It may be that you are consuming too few calories. I know that may sound counterintuitive; but, we never recommend a woman go lower than 1,200 calories per day. Here are links to a few articles that may give you ideas on some things to try to start or re-start your weight loss.

Thank you SHEENADEE,

I have no problem with doing the videos that are linked to this challenge, but I'll probably just add my own too. I'm also doing my cardio. I just wanted to be sure I was doing what was expected, and if I do more then that's a plus!

Howdy HAVASUJULES and SIERRAGOLD!

The idea of the challenge is to follow the program within the challenge, so I would still recommend that you try to follow the recommended videos. If you cannot do that, it is okay to make substitutions as needed. Be sure to do the cardio elements of the challenge too, not just the toning workouts. And track your workouts in the Fitness Tracker too.

Wishing you the best, and good results for the challenge!

The emails should start when you join this team. You might want to check in your spam/junk folder to see if the first one ended up in there. You can still follow the challenge, however, without the emails. Go to the main page of this team. Under the "Challenge Details" heading, click the link for the week's challenge you're working on. For instance, click on "Complete Week 1 Action Steps". A new page opens up with action steps. For your 10-minute workouts, click on "Get your workout videos" under action step 1 and highlighted in red. On this page scroll down and you'll see a table listing which video to do each day.

I'd say you can use the workouts you have been doing for week one since you didn't know how to find the workout videos; but, would suggest that you start using the challenge videos going forward.

Good luck!

I sure hope so... because I've been doing all kinds of different DVD's of mine, and not the videos anymore. I haven't been tracking at all either, except on my notepad to make notes of which of my old workout DVD's I need to sell. I need to clear out what I won't use.

So I hope to get clearification on this just in case.

By the way... your user name has a nice ring to it. emoticon

Joined the challenge today (March 8th). Big question is can I continue my own toning work out with dumbbells? I do not do videos well at all - I can't really follow them (easily distracted). I have a 15 minute continuous work out I do with 5# weights. I started with a 2# weights.

Kegan - To start go to the Official Spring Into Shape Bootcamp Challenge SparkTeam. Next choose which week's Challenge you're working on. For instance, click on Complete Week 1 Action Steps. A new page opens up with action steps. For your 10-minute workouts, click on "Get your Week 1 workout videos." under action step 1 and highlighted in red. On this page scroll down and there will be a bar listing which video to do each day.

I hope this helps :)

The idea of the challenge is to follow the program within the challenge, but since you are already doing something with your personal trainer, it might be best to just do that so you aren't overworking your muscles and possibly cause injury from overuse.

You just have to track your workouts in your Fitness Tracker and then if you complete a week, you can check the box off in the Challenge Details box on the main team page.

(oops meant to reply not create a new topic)I have a personal trainer and have signed up for the gym's 12 week challenge. Do I still need to do the workout videos to be in this challenge? What do I do to track my workouts (other then the fitness tracker) for this challenge?

YELLIS87 - You can do it! Find one thing you can do today to help you work towards your goal. It can be as small as making sure you exercise for just 10 minutes or drinking 8 cups of water - you choose. Making one healthy choice will lead you to other healthy choices and the next thing you know, you will be seeing some positive changes with all the healthy choices you have been making. Hi DORKWYNN !

If you need to make a substitute for the video, you are allowed to do that. But, I'd suggest that you try to include the cardio video in addition to your regularly planned workout if you can ...kind of makes it more of a challenge then, doesn't it?

Hello! Just joined today and plan on starting tomorrow. I am trying to walk/run 30 mins per day - can I use this as my cardio or do I need to do the 10 min cardio video on top of the walk/run per day?

Try interval training on your treadmill to make it more exciting. You can do 2 types of intervals, incline and speed. To start incline intervals, you would warm up for 3-5 mins and then up your incline at a pace that it reasonable for your level ex. .5 incline every minute or 1% incline until halfway through workout then slowly lower it back down. Speed intervals involve a jog or run for a specific amount of time and then recover. Ex. 5 mph for 30 seconds then rest for 2 mins, then repeat, just don't forget to give yourself a 3-5 minute warm up and cool down, especially if you get shin splints.

Welcome to the team! You can find the videos anytime by going to our Team page and looking for the box called Challenge Details. Click on the link to view the details for your current week, including the videos (which are repeated each week for the whole Bootcamp). All the videos (Day 1 - Day 7) are listed there and you would click on the appropriate day for that video.

PAULAROSE65 - I'm not familiar with all the workouts that you've been doing, but it is possible to build muscle and still have a layer of fat, which may account for some of the increase that you are seeing. Also, being just slightly off of where you are measuring can cause some variance as well. Another thing that could be happening is that your body is firming up and some areas may see an increase in measurement, while other surrounding areas see a decrease in measurements. Are you noticing any changes in how your clothes fit? That's another good way to see how you are doing.

QUOOTIE - Yes, that does count. However, if you find that you can do most of the exercises in a video, what you may want to do is look in the Video section: www.sparkpeople.com/resource/
videos.as
p
, for a different video that works the same muscle group (upper body, lower body or core) that might be a better fit for you. You can then just swap out that video for the on that you are able to do all or more of the exercises.

I measure myself in the same areas everytime. They have gone up about 1/4 in my "upper hip" about 3 inches below my bellybutton, and a 1/2 across the widest part of my butt. In answer to your question, no I have not done that. I don't go to a gym, I do my work outs at home, with DVD's.

The day 2 video I simply could not do some of the exercises as demonstrated. I kept moving and did them as well as I could and I certainly was sweating and feeling my abs working. I just need someone to tell me that it is ok to do this and that it still "counts". Will continue with day 3 tomorrow. I am a little frightened that the videos are going to get really challenging for me. I, incidentally , will be no where near bikini ready after 4 weeks, I just wanted to try something really outside my comfort zone

Happiness is there if you chose it.

PAULAROSE65 - where are your measurements going up? Are you sure you are measuring exactly where you did before? Have you had your body fat percentage checked?

I am just now starting week 2. I have had asthmatic bronchitis and had to go to the hospital for treatment and medication. My breathing became critical and had to layoff exercising and I certainly did not feel like eating. I am much better and now getting back on track and ready to rock and roll once again now that I can breathe Hooray!!!!!!!!!

I just started the Bootcamp Challenge on Thursday. However I have been consistently working out 4 to 5 times a week, since Jan at aprox 45 to 60 mins each time. I do DVD's such as, the Slim in 6 series, Mari Winsor Pilates DVD, and Brazilian AXE cardio. I am noticing that my measurements are going up instead of down, especially in my legs and hips. Could I be doing the wrong exercises?
I have used your videos the past few days, which I do enjoy. So I'm hoping by changing things up maybe that will help me go down in size rather than up. Any advice on what I should or shouldn't be doing? FYI I have a pear shaped body....Thanks Paula

STINKBUGMAMA - You just need one band that has handles on it. There are various resistances (some easier, some harder). I purchased a set at Target a few years ago that comes with 3 tubes, each a different resistance level. I like having that so that I can choose to use a harder resistance for some of the exercises, but am able to use a lighter resistance for other exercises when needed.

Maria - If you can, try to add an incline to your treadmill walking. That will add intensity without speed and can change up your walking. Some other things you might want to try: if you listen to music while walking, you might want to make a new music playlist; if you have access to a tv where your treadmill is, then maybe watching a tv show or movie during your walk will help make the time go by faster for you; or if you able to, perhaps adding in some other forms of cardio can help break up the monotony of the treadmill.

Hope that helps!

Anyone know what kind of resistance bands to get? Should I get ones that are harder to pull or easier? Do I have to switch it up during the routine? I read somewhere that you need 2 bands.

Okay, it's time I ask for help. In October, I joined Jenny Craig and have lost 34 pounds and a whole bunch of inches. I started using SparkPeople again a couple of weeks ago and it has really helped with my motivation and consistency. I am 8 pounds away from my goal with JC. The day I walked into JC, I also started walking and I walk for an hour everyday at a speed of 3.2 which is somewhere around a 19 minute mile. I am satisfied with this. My problem is that I am getting tired of the walking. I have a problem with shin splints, so walking outside at that pace is hard for me. I also do the 30 day challenge on the Wii Active on the weekends and have joined the bootcamp and have been faithful to that. How can I make my treadmill my friend again.

I would appreciate any feedback. Thanks.

Maria

Thank you Sheenadee,

You are probably right in saying that everyone loses at their own pace. My problem is I am very impatient and want results right away. I am going to keep on plugging away and I know sooner or later the pounds will come off.

Hello Kathy - Congrats on completely week 2!

We all lose at our own pace, depending on our metabolism, nutrition, calories burned, etc. Our metabolism definitely changes over time. I'm a few years older than you so I know exactly what you are talking about there. You might need to be just a little patient.

You mentioned you are tracking your food (way to go!). In addition to checking that you are within the calorie range that SparkPeople recommends for you, be sure to check if you are within range of the individual nutrients (protein, fat, carbs). Staying within those ranges can make a difference.

If everything is in line with your nutrition and you are getting enough exercise, the pounds will come off when you stick to the plan. Depending on what you're doing, maybe think about kicking up the exercise a little more if you can that.

Hi everyone,

I have completed week 2 but have only lost something like a tenth of a pound. I have been tracking my food and walking more but the weight isn't coming off. Is this normal? I am 53 years old and am thinking that is part of the problem; my metabolism has gone to sleep.

Anyone have any tips? I did purchase a zipbit, or whatever it's called so I will be able to tell exactly how many calories I burn during the course of the day, as well as the steps taken.

Even though it is discouraging, I am not going to give up this time. Kathy
