We lived in the same place for 34 years. Needless to say, every wall had something hanging on it and every cabinet was full. The 2007 wildfire in California changed all that! We're starting all over on Social Security. It has really liberated us and changed our priorities!

I have found it to be a challenge since I am one who has trouble getting rid of things, but I also have found it to be so wonderful to know what I have and to have a place for everything. As I continue, I am hoping to use items like the rotisserie and the yogurt maker and all of the tools to cut fruit and vegetables. I plan to use or give away all of the food we have in the house and only buy healthy items from no on. Hopefully, I can get my husband to get on board. emoticon

I too am going through all of my kitchen cabinets and the fridge/freezer, but it is taking a while, as that is another challenge I have. I have gone through more than half, and the last few are probably the easiest ones, but I have to get motivated to finish. I have a garage sale box full and will be starting on a second one today. Then I am going to the store this next week and only buying what I need and what is healthy. I figure if all cabinets are cleaned out, I will use what I have to make healthy meals and have fun doing so. emoticon

I also went to work and rearranged the cupboards, fridge and freezer.
Because it's just me and my preschool daughter living here I decided to make it easier to reach for my food when I need a snack instead of her 'treats'.
I now have a shelf with all my goodies all in named containers, like raisins, dried aprocits, prunes, dates, crackers, different nuts.
And my daughter has her own shelf with her little bits and pieces she takes to Kindergarten.
In the freezer, I gifted all the meats and packaged meals a few weeks ago (to her dad since he was struggling with money) and put three ice-cream containers in there. Each one has little plastic bags with meal portions in them. 1 for veggies, 1 for fish and 1 for chicken. So when I reach into the freezer, my meat and vege is already measured out and ready to cook. I guess this is how those dreaded freezer meals became so handy? It didn't take much work!
The fridge was cleared out also. It's so bare now but it makes me feel better that what I do see in there, is only happy, healthy food and I'm not embarrassed when a visitor looks in there anymore :)

So thanks for starting this thread! I have never felt so liberated.

Since reading this thread the other day, it got me to thinking. And today it got me into action.
I have gifted to my mum anything white. White pasta, rice, noodles etc
I've also given her all the jar sauces and meals in a can that I bought ages ago but just never ended up eating. Probably because it's all so awful and fattening and I am aware of it.
I've also given her all my random herbal teas as I really only drink 4 different ones but had 9.

I haven't pitched anything, money is tight and so I buy my groceries weekly and normally I only purchase ingredients that make a recipe so we can have left overs and things. So considering those facts, i haven't bought any junk food either.....

I tossed a bunch of old candy from various holidays, plus some old bags of chips and pretzels.

The one thing I can't bring myself to throw away is the 12-pack of Dr. Pepper hiding in our second fridge (in the garage). I treat myself to a can of Dr. Pepper about once a week. It's my "thing," you could say. Back in the old days, I would drink 4 or 5 sodas per day. It has been a long road to here, but now I try to limit myself to one DIET soda per day or less, and one REAL soda per week (or less).

The only thing I pitched was 2 old bags of microwave popcorn. I don't have chips, pop, etc in the house.

Old Halloween and Christmas candy, snack crackers, open bags of chips long forgotten about. I forgot it was in the cupboard and tossed it all to make room for some healthy snacks.

Also tossed expired food and made a nice donation to the food pantry of stuff we had and probably wouldn't eat.

I had been meaning to go through the cupboards for some time and starting on SparkPeople was a great motivator to get it done :)

Sometimes when I'm sad I stop being sad and be AWESOME instead :)

Potato chips and ice cream. Oh, and nachos...and popcorn soaked in butter. Ugh, what a list. No wonder I have a problem!

Pitched it for the obvious reasons. No nutritional value!

I haven't pitched anything from my pantry - that's not to say I won't but my biggest thing right now is teaching myself moderation. That was the demise to my plan the last time so this time I want to be sure to master it! ;)
